Apple’s Let Loose Event 2024: New iPads & Accessories

What to Know

* Apple announced an unexpected event “Let Loose” happening on May 7 at 7 a.m. PDT.

* We can expect to hear about new iPad models such as the iPad Air and iPad Pro boasting Apple silicon chips.

* It is possible that we will also see a brand new Apple Pencil and maybe even a redesigned Magic Keyboard meant for iPads.

While Apple enthusiasts have been anticipating the annual WWDC keynote, happening June 10, the May 7 Let Loose event announcement has come as a happy surprise. Apple hasn’t provided a lot of information about this event, but because of the event photo featuring an Apple Pencil and the fact that iPads are often announced in the spring, we are expecting new iPads, an Apple Pencil, and maybe other Apple accessories too.

When & Where to Watch Let Loose

You can watch the Let Loose event on May 7 at 7 a.m. PDT on Apple’s website or via the Apple TV app. While we can’t be sure what will be announced, we’re hoping for a new iPad Air 6 with an M-series chip, potentially a new 12.9-inch iPad for those who need a larger screen but don’t have an iPad Pro, and maybe even a new iPad Pro with the M3 chip.

Since the event logo is a hand holding an Apple Pencil, we are also hoping to see a new Apple Pencil and potentially even other accessories. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicts a new Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil, and two new iPads: iPad Pro and iPad Air. Don’t forget to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter to learn more about Apple devices and how to use them.

Answered: What Is the Flower on iPhone Camera?

What to Know

* The flower icon appears on your iPhone camera when it switches into Macro mode for taking close-up photos.

* You can disable Macro mode by tapping the flower icon.

* If you don't want the flower icon to appear, you can disable it in the Settings app.

If you have a Pro iPhone, you've probably noticed the flower icon appear on your iPhone camera screen while taking photos. This icon should only appear when your camera enters Macro mode for taking close-up photos. Below, we'll cover how to use and disable the Macro mode flower icon.

What Is the Flower on the iPhone Camera?

As you might have guessed, the icon indicates that your iPhone's macro camera is enabled. iPhone macro photography allows you to take clear, extreme close-up shots of nearly any subject. If you don't need to use the iPhone's macro lens, you can easily disable it from the camera by tapping the flower icon.

How to Turn Off iPhone Macro Photography Lens

If you don't have any interest in iPhone macro photography, you can disable the macro lens. For more iPhone photography tips and tricks, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

* When the camera is open, tap the yellow flower icon.

* When it is gray with a slash through it, that means it has been disabled.

That's how to disable the macro photography lens. If you want to disable the icon itself, you can do that as well.

How to Disable Flower Icon in the iPhone Camera

If you don't want the flower icon to show up on your iPhone camera, you can disable that in the Settings app:

* Open the Settings app, and tap Camera.

* Scroll to the bottom and tap the toggle next to Macro Control to disable or enable the flower icon.

Note

This does not disable Macro mode, only the flower icon. You will not be able to turn off Macro mode if you turn off the above toggle.

Next, find out how to use long exposure on iPhone.

FAQ

* What does Macro mode do? Macro mode keeps the image clear while taking extreme close-up shots. This means you can take crisp photos of smaller subjects, like plants or animals.

* Does iPhone 15 have macro photography? The standard iPhone 15 model does not have a Macro mode. However, all Pro models iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, can capture macro photography images.

* Why is my iPhone camera blurry? If your iPhone camera is blurry, it could be because of your Macro Control settings, which you can adjust by following the steps above. However, if it is not the macro lens causing the issue, check out our guide on how to fix iPhone camera quality.

Fixed: iPhone Won’t Let Me Delete Photos

What to Know

* When storage is full, your iPhone sometimes won't let you delete photos.

* If your iPhone won't let you delete photos, you can disable and re-enable iCloud Photos.

* You can also enable the Optimize iPhone Storage option to upload photos to the cloud and delete local copies.

Photos tend to take up the most storage on any phone, so when storage is running low, the first thing you will likely want to do is delete photos. However, you might occasionally run into a bug where your iPhone won't let you delete photos. Let's find out how you can fix this issue and finally clear up some storage.

Jump To:

* Why Won't My Photos Delete?

* How to Fix iPhone Not Deleting Photos

* FAQ

Why Won't My Photos Delete?

When you delete photos on iPhone, the photos are not deleted immediately. Instead, they go into the Recently Deleted folder where they will stay for 30 days before being permanently deleted from the device. This means that when your storage is full and you try to delete photos, your iPhone won't have enough storage to move the photo to the Recently Deleted folder.

If your iPhone storage is full and you can't delete photos, the easiest solution is to try clearing up storage in other areas first. Check out our article on how to free up space on your iPhone to start removing any unnecessary apps and files. For more iPhone storage management advice, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Fix iPhone Not Deleting Photos

If you're wondering, "Why won't my photos delete?", there are a few fixes that can help resolve the issue.

Restart Your iPhone & Check for Updates

When troubleshooting problems with your iPhone, the first step is to turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. Restarting devices can often fix a variety of issues. Of course, it won't fix everything.

The next step is to check for iOS updates on your iPhone to see if a software patch is available which could possibly resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Check iCloud Photos Settings

If your iPhone is not deleting photos, a common fix that some have found is to toggle off iCloud photos. There could be an issue with how your iPhone photo storage is syncing with iCloud photos, and switching it off should allow you to delete the photos from your device without issue.

If you have an iCloud Plus subscription, you can also enable the Optimize iPhone Storage setting. This setting uploads your photos to the cloud and removes the local copy from your device to help save storage.

Clear Recently Deleted Photos

Whenever you delete photos, they will move to the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app. To truly delete the photos, you will need to go into the folder and permanently erase them. Check out our article on how to recover Recently Deleted photos to find out how to access this folder.

These solutions should help resolve any issues with your iPhone not deleting photos. Next, find out how to delete duplicate photos on your iPhone.

FAQ

* Why can't I delete apps on my iPhone? There are some apps that you cannot delete from your iPhone, such as the Settings app or the Messages app. There could also be Screen Time settings preventing you from making changes. Check out our article on what to do when your iPhone won't let you delete apps.

* How do I erase photos from iPhone? Erasing photos from your iPhone is a quick and easy process. All you really need to do is tap the trashcan icon. Head over to our article on how to delete photos from iPhone for more detailed information.

* Does deleting photos from iPhone delete them from iCloud? If iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting photos from your iPhone should also delete them from iCloud. There are ways to delete photos from iPhone but not iCloud.

Answered: What Are Haptics on iPhone?

What to Know

* Haptic feedback refers to the subtle vibrations you feel when navigating your device.

* Haptics make your iPhone feel more tactile and responsive, so you can be sure that you've tapped a button or key.

* You can disable or enable System Haptics in the Sounds & Haptics settings.

While fiddling with your iPhone’s settings, you’ve probably come across something called System Haptics. You might not have even noticed a huge difference when turning it off or on. So what are haptics on iPhone and what do they do? Let’s find out!

Jump To:

* What Is Haptic Feedback?

* Should iPhone Haptics Be On or Off?

* FAQ

What Is Haptic Feedback?

Haptic feedback is included in many digital devices today. Your iPhone has a taptic engine inside, which is a type of haptic engine that provides the subtle vibrations you feel inside the device. Haptics are used throughout the iPhone experience to make the device feel more tactile and responsive. They have become so commonplace that you might not have ever really paid attention to them.

Haptics differ from normal vibrations in that a haptic engine can adjust the vibration to provide you with different experiences or sensations. For example, when long pressing on an app on your Home Screen, it might feel like you're pressing down on a physical button, or when you unlock your iPhone, it might feel like a lock clicking open.

Should iPhone Haptics Be On or Off?

Having iPhone haptics on or off is all about personal preference. If you find yourself getting annoyed with all of the subtle vibrations you feel when navigating your device, try switching them off. Then, you can decide if that improves your experience or not. You can also enable a haptic feedback keyboard if you want typing to feel more like a physical keyboard.

If you want to disable haptics, you can do so in the Settings app. For more hidden iPhone tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Here’s how to manage haptic feedback on iPhone:

* Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.

* Scroll down to System Sound & Haptics, and tap the System Haptics toggle to turn them off and on.

That’s how you can disable haptic feedback on your iPhone. Now that you know what haptics are on iPhone, you can decide if this feature is something you want to use or not. Next, find out what to do when haptics are not working on your iPhone.

FAQ

* What are haptics on Apple Watch? Just like your iPhone, your Apple Watch has a haptic engine which allows the device to vibrate. On the Apple Watch, the vibrations are designed to feel more like a tap on your wrist. You can disable haptics in your Apple Watch settings.

* What is Play Haptics in Silent Mode? The Play in Silent Mode setting simply means your iPhone’s haptics will still vibrate even when you put your iPhone on vibrate.

* How can I make my iPhone vibrate on silent? You can make your iPhone vibrate on silent by going into Settings, tapping Sounds & Haptics, and tapping Haptics at the top of the screen. Then, ensure Always Play or Play in Silent Mode is selected.

* What is Haptic Touch? Haptic Touch is a feature that allows you to long press different UI elements to access extra options and settings. For example, you can long press on the Settings app and quickly open your Bluetooth settings.

Check Busy Times for Nearby Businesses

Want to check how busy your favorite restaurant is before you head out? Google Maps makes it easy to see whether a business is currently busy and when it is busiest and least busy. Here’s how to see how busy a place is on Google Maps.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Find out how busy nearby stores and restaurants are before leaving home.

* Discover the best times to visit your favorite stores and restaurants.

How to See How Busy a Place Is on Google

System Requirements

This tip works in the Google Maps app on iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

Checking how busy a business is before leaving your home could save you time and trouble (or even a trip if you decide to stay home instead). How does Google know how busy a place is? According to Google, it gathers anonymous data from users who have opted into Location History to determine how many people are gathering at a particular location at any given time. If you don't want Google using your location, you can disable Location Services for the app. However, without Location Services, you will not be able to navigate using Google Maps. For more iPhone travel tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here’s how to see busy times on Google Maps:

* Open Google Maps.

* Enter a destination in the search bar.

* Scroll down to the reviews. Under the reviews, you should see a section labeled Popular times.

* In the graph, you can see a series of blue bars that indicate how busy the location is at a particular time.

* The pink bar is the current time and shows how busy it is relative to the blue bars.

* Tap any of the blue bars to see whether or not the location is busy during that time. You’ll see a description like, Usually not too busy or Usually as busy as it gets.

* You can tap the day of the week to see a different day.

* Scroll through the days, select the one you want to see times for, and tap Done.

* Alternatively, you can swipe left and right to see different days of the week.

That’s how you can see how busy a place is on Google Maps! Unfortunately, Apple Maps lacks this functionality, but hopefully, it will be added in a future iOS update. Next, check out our write-up on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps.

How to Fix Apple Watch ECG Not Working

What to Know

* The Apple Watch ECG app takes a recording of your heart’s electrical pulses.

* If the Apple Watch ECG is not working, try restarting your device and cleaning the Digital Crown.

* You should also double-check that ECG has been set up in the Health app.

The Apple Watch ECG is one of the most useful apps you can have on your device. You can use it to keep track of your heart health and share the results with your doctor. However, if the ECG is not working, you won’t be able to see the results you need. Here’s what you can do to fix it.

Jump To:

* What Is ECG on Apple Watch?

* How to Fix Apple Watch ECG Not Working

* FAQ

What Is ECG on Apple Watch?

ECG stands for electrocardiogram and is a way to measure your heartbeat. The Apple Watch Series 4 and newer can record an ECG. According to Apple, this feature takes a reading of the electrical pulses that make your heart beat to ensure the rhythm of your heart rate is normal.

How to Fix Apple Watch ECG Not Working

If your Apple Watch ECG is not working, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take. For more Apple Watch troubleshooting solutions, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, let’s get started with finding out how to fix it when your Apple Watch ECG is not working.

Restart Apple Watch

Troubleshooting why your Apple Watch ECG is not working begins with restarting the watch. Restarting your Apple Watch can often fix minor bugs and other issues.

Clean Digital Crown

When taking an ECG, you must make sure that the watch is snug against your wrist, then hold your finger against the Digital Crown. If the Digital Crown is dirty, your Apple Watch might have trouble reading your heart rate, so I recommend cleaning your Apple Watch.

Ensure ECG Is Set Up in Health App

ECG must be set up in the Health app before you can use it on your Apple Watch. Ensure you have set up this feature by going into the Health app, tapping the Browse tab, and then selecting Heart. You should see an option to set up Electrocardiograms. If it is already set up, you will see your most recent ECG reading instead.

Reset Apple Watch

If all else fails, you can try resetting your Apple Watch. This will wipe all data on the watch. However, when you reset your Apple Watch, your iPhone will create a backup of the device so that you can restore it afterward.

After trying the above fixes, if you are still having trouble with your Apple Watch ECG not working, you may need to reach out to Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for further assistance. The problem may be hardware-related, in which case your device will need to be repaired. Next, find out how to use Apple Watch recovery tracking to check your heart rate recovery.

FAQ

* Can you check your heart rate on Apple Watch? Yes, the Apple Watch has a built-in heart rate sensor. Find out how to check your heart rate on Apple Watch outside of the ECG app.

* How accurate is the Apple Watch's heart rate monitor? The Apple Watch can provide a fairly accurate reading of your heart rate, but can sometimes offer an inaccurate result.

* If my ECG is normal, is my heart ok? While the Apple Watch can help check for atrial fibrillation, it is not a medical device. It cannot detect heart attacks, blood clots, strokes, or any other heart conditions. If you believe something is wrong with your heart, it is best to check with your doctor first and foremost.

How to Remove Tickets from Apple Wallet

What to Know

* You can easily delete old or expired tickets or passes from your Apple Wallet so that they don’t randomly pop up or clutter up your phone.

* Depending on the type of pass or ticket, you can delete it by selecting it, tapping the More menu or the i icon, then selecting remove.

Every card, key, pass, or ticket that you add to your Apple Wallet stays there until you manually delete it. Depending on the type of ticket or pass you have, the steps to delete it can vary, but they are easy to delete once you know what to look for.

How to Delete Tickets from Apple Wallet

When you go to remove tickets or passes from your Apple Wallet, there are several places you can look to find them. Here’s how to remove tickets from Apple Wallet:

* Open the Wallet app and make sure you are in the main Wallet menu; you may need to tap the back button to get there if you have a card or pass open.

* Scroll down and tap View (Number) Expired Passes.

* Now, you can tap on a pass to open it up and tap Delete.

* You can also tap the i icon to see more information.

* Here, you can tap Remove Pass.

* If you return to your Expired passes page, you can also tap Edit in the top right corner.

* Now, you can select passes you wish to delete in bulk.

* You can also tap Select All.

* Keep in mind that once you tap Delete, you won’t be asked to confirm that you wish to delete, so be careful not to accidentally delete a pass or ticket you wish to keep.

* Back in the main Wallet menu, you may see a pass that is no longer valid and hasn't moved to the Expired list, so there isn't an obvious option to delete it. Tap to open it.

* Tap the More icon (three dots).

* Select Remove Pass.

Now you know how to remove items from your Apple Wallet to keep it tidy. For more Apple Wallet tips, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

While keeping expired passes, tickets, or cards does not take up too much storage, it can get annoying. In some cases, an expired movie ticket, for example, will automatically pop up on your iPhone when you are near the cinema where you’ve already watched it. Deleting them can prevent these annoying situations or having to wade through lots of tickets and passes to find what you are looking for. Next, learn how to delete cards from your Apple Wallet.

FAQ

* How do I delete a card from Apple Pay? To delete a card from your Apple Pay or Apple Wallet, you’ll have to open Settings, tap on your name at the top, select Payments & Shipping, then tap Edit in the top right corner to make changes including deleting a payment method.

* What if I can't remove a card from Apple Wallet? Go to your Settings instead and edit your iCloud Payments & Shipping information. Deleting it there will also delete it from your App Store.

* Can you delete Apple Pay transactions? Unfortunately, you cannot delete Apple Pay transactions, but you can remove the card that’s associated with those transactions which will remove the list from your Wallet.

Organize Your iPhone Home Screen & Apps

Your app collection is one area that can quickly make your iPhone feel disorganized. Your Home Screen becomes cluttered and soon you’re swiping through page after page, trying to figure out where the three apps you actually use ended up. Here are some tips to get your apps under control.

Remove Lesser-Used Apps from Your Home Screen

If you have apps that you like to use on occasion but aren’t in your daily rotation (e.g. I only use Uber when I’m traveling), you can remove that app from your Home Screen but keep it in your App Library, so it’s there when you need it. Just long press on the app on your Home Screen, tap Remove App (don’t worry, it won’t delete it!), and then tap Remove from Home Screen. This will take the app out of sight but keep it downloaded and searchable through your App Library. If you want to delete the app for good, tap Delete App.

Check Your Active Subscriptions

An important part of app hygiene is making sure you’re not paying for apps you don’t use. You might have signed up for a free trial at one point that you’ve forgotten to cancel, or you might have tried to stop a subscription and failed (they don’t make it easy!). To review your active subscriptions, open your Settings app, tap on your name, then tap Subscriptions. Your current subscriptions will be listed under Active with an expiration or renewal date and price listed for each. Subscriptions you’ve cancelled within the last year will appear under Inactive, showing you when they expired. Tap on any active subscriptions you want to cancel and follow the prompts to make sure you stop that billing. To continue making better iPhone organizational habits, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter!

Become an App Library Pro

Your App Library is a great built-in tool, but it’s easy to forget, tucked away after your last Home Screen page. To access it, just swipe right until you reach your last Home Screen page, then swipe one more time. The search bar at the top will let you scroll alphabetically through your apps or type in the name of an app. It also has some presorted folders for quick access to frequently used, recently downloaded, and other kinds of apps your iPhone deems relevant. You can’t edit the premade categories, but I find they prove useful nonetheless.

Keep New Downloads off Your iPad

I use my iPhone more frequently than my iPad, and I don’t need to access the majority of my apps on my iPad. This means I don’t want a bunch of apps cluttering up my iPad when I’m never going to open most of them on that device. To keep new app downloads from also downloading to your iPad, open the Settings app on your iPad. In the side menu, tap App Store, then under Automatic Downloads, make sure App Downloads is toggled off. This ensures any app downloaded on another device will not appear on that iPad. These same steps work on your iPhone if there are iPad apps you don’t want on your phone.

Sort Your Apps into Folders

For the apps you do want to keep on your Home Screen, cut down on swiping by creating app folders. Almost my entire Home Screen consists of app folders because nothing beats my own organizational system! With app folders, I know where to look and find my apps in places that make sense to me. To create a folder, press and hold an app, drag it on top of another icon, confirm the folder name, and you’re off! Drag in as many more apps as you want to add to that folder. Tap on a folder to open it, and long-press the title at the top to rename it. Take some time and create these little space savers. You’ll be glad you did!

Take Inventory of Your Apps

You likely don’t need every app you’ve downloaded. How many of us have downloaded a one-time-use app and left it on our phones in case we found ourselves back at that one parking meter across the country we found the last time we were road-tripping? What about the games we don’t play anymore or the rewards programs from stores we haven’t visited in years? If you’re having a hard time deciding what stays and what goes, here are some questions to ask yourself:

Make a list of the apps you use every day.

* How many of these apps are essential to your daily life?

* How many of these apps do you enjoy using?

* How many of these apps cause you stress or suck up your time and money?

* Is there an app that would help you start a new hobby or establish a good habit? Add it to the list!

Make a list of apps you never use.

* Do you know what this app does?

* Do you want to start using this app?

* Do you need to keep this app because it allows access to important info or settings?

How to Make Your Alarm Louder If Your iPhone Alarm Is Quiet

We've already gone over how to set an alarm on your iPhone or iPad. But if you've set the alarm and it's so low you can barely hear it, you must be wondering, "Why is my iPhone alarm so quiet?" If you can hear the alarm sound on your iPhone or iPad but need to make your alarm louder, there are a few easy fixes to try first. Update iOS or iPadOS on your iPhone or iPad. If your software is already up to date, reboot your iPhone or iPad. Then, go back to your alarm settings and make sure you haven't chosen None as your alarm sound. You can also change your alarm sound to a more attention-grabbing one.

If these steps don't work, read on to learn why you have low alarm volume on your iPhone, and how to fix the alarm sound on your iPhone or iPad.

Note: This problem is different than your iPhone alarm not going off at all or alarms silent on your iPhone. If your iPhone alarm won't go off, we have a tutorial to help you get it ringing again. If the steps in this article don't result in a louder alarm on your iPhone or iPad, it's worth checking out the steps in this tutorial before contacting Apple Support.

Change the Alarm Volume on iPhone & iPad

If you're wondering, "Why is my alarm so quiet?" the simplest answer is that you need to turn up your alarm volume! Here's how to change the alarm volume on an iPhone or iPad. Play around with this setting, increasing the Ringtones and Alerts slider bit by bit, until your alarm volume on your iPhone or iPad is loud enough to wake you or get your attention. You can also use this process to lower the alarm volume on an iPhone or iPad if it's too loud.

iPad or iPhone alarm quiet still? Read on for another way to make your alarm louder.

Turn off Attention Aware Features

How do I fix the alarm sound on my iPhone or iPad if none of these steps has helped so far? You can turn off Attention Aware features! Attention Aware is a feature for iPhone X and later that uses your front-facing camera to determine if you're looking at your iPhone. If you are, Attention Aware will lower loud ringtones, text alerts, and alarms. The idea is that you're already looking at your iPhone, so you don't need a loud notification.

Of course, this is a problem if your iPhone can "see" your face, but your eyes aren't open because you're asleep! Here's how to turn off Attention Aware and turn up the alarm volume on your iPhone.

By now, your iPad and iPhone alarm volume should be louder, loud enough to wake you up or remind you of important events and responsibilities. If these steps haven't made your iPhone alarm louder, check in with Apple Support. Be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day for more great Apple Watch, iPad, and iPhone alarm tutorials!

FAQ

* On your iPhone, open Settings.

* Tap Mail.

How to Turn Off Silent Mode Icon on iPhone 15 Pro

What to Know

* On the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, you might see a bell icon with a slash through it next to the time.

* This new icon makes it easy to tell when Silent mode is enabled now that the Ring/Silent switch is gone.

* You can disable this icon in the Sounds & Haptics section of Settings.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max dropped the Ring/Silent switch in favor of the new Action Button, which can be customized to perform a variety of functions. As a result, a new status bar symbol has appeared to indicate when your iPhone is in Silent mode.

Jump To:

* What Is the Bell with a Line through It on iPhone?

* How to Disable Silent Mode Icon

* FAQ

What Is the Bell Icon on iPhone 15 Pro & Pro Max?

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have an Action Button, which can be used to silence your iPhone, or customized to perform various actions (hence the name). Some actions you can assign to the Action Button on your iPhone include opening the camera, turning the flashlight on or off, activating a Focus, running a custom shortcut, and more.

Since you can no longer verify whether or not your iPhone is silenced based on the Ring/Silent switch on the side of the device, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will now display a bell icon with a slash through it next to the time when the device is muted:

This is a handy way to tell if your iPhone is on silent. But for people who always keep their devices on silent mode, there is not much need for this icon. Luckily, there is an easy way to disable it. For more iPhone shortcuts and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Turn Off the Silent Mode Icon on iPhone 15 Pro & Pro Max

If you want to disable the bell with a line through it on your iPhone, you can do so in the Settings app:

* Open Settings, and tap Sounds & Haptics.

* Tap the toggle next to Show in Status Bar.

* When this toggle is disabled, the bell icon will no longer be displayed.

That’s how to turn off the Silent mode icon on your iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Next, find out the best uses of the iPhone action button.

FAQ

* What does a bell with a line through it mean? While the bell icon next to the clock on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max means that Silent mode is enabled, this icon is also used throughout iOS. It usually means alerts are muted. For example, if you see the bell with the slash through it next to a specific contact, that means you have muted that contact on your iPhone, so you will no longer receive notifications when you receive texts from that person.

* How do I take my iPhone off silent? If your iPhone has Ring/Silent switch, you can toggle silent mode on and off with that switch. Alternatively, you can use Focus modes on your iPhone to control when your notifications are muted.

* What are the little symbols at the top of my iPhone? If you are seeing icons in your iPhone status bar that you don’t recognize, check out our guide to iPhone symbols on top of the screen.

iOS 18: Everything We Know about the Next Update

What to Know

* iOS 18 will be announced at the WWDC 2024 on June 10th at 10 a.m. PT.

* The beta version of the new software will be available shortly after the announcement and the public version of iOS 18 will come out sometime in the fall of 2024.

* iOS 18 is all about the incorporation of AI with the added bonus of RCS messaging.

When is the next iOS update? Historically, Apple announces a new iOS each year at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, releases a developer beta version immediately after, a public beta a few weeks after that, and then releases the full version in the fall. There is no reason to expect Apple to break the tradition this year. Another guess we can feel comfortable making is what it will be called: iOS 18. What else do we know about the next iOS update? Let's go over what we can expect, including which iPhones will be compatible with iOS 18 and what cool features may be coming our way.

iOS 18 Release Date

Apple typically announces its new iPhone operating system at its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in early summer. Now that Apple has announced that WWDC 2024 will take place the second week of June, from the 10th through the 14th, we can assume we'll hear all about the new update at the keynote speech on June 10. Learn more about WWDC 2024 and find out how to tune in to watch it live!

After WWDC, Apple usually releases beta versions of the new iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS for users to try out and report bugs. The full iOS update typically launches sometime in September. We have no reason to believe we'll see anything significantly different this year, so we're penciling in an early fall release.

Which iPhones Will No Longer Be Supported?

With iOS 17, Apple ditched iPhone 8 and X models from its lineup. While there are no strong rumors that iOS 18 will cut even more iPhones from being able to update to the latest iOS, there's still a high likelihood. This year, Apple plans to make some of the biggest changes to its operating system since its inception back in 2008. With this in mind, Apple may have to make hard choices about which iPhones have the capacity to operate such a sophisticated system. That means the XR, XS, and XS Max could be next on the chopping block. Learn how to update your iPhone to the latest iOS.

iOS 18: All About AI

The rise in popularity of generative AI like ChatGPT, Google's Genesis, and Midjourney has created a whole new way for users to interact with software. In a shareholder meeting back in February, Tim Cook said that Apple plans to "break new ground" and has been investing a "tremendous amount of time and effort" into AI. This speculation was all but confirmed in a not-so-subtle hint given by Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, in a tweet on March 26. In the tweet, Jos capitalizes the words "Absolutely Incredible!" in a conspicuous manner. If iOS 18 is going to explore new ways to incorporate AI throughout its apps and systems, that may be the reason rumors report this as the largest update to iOS in a long time.

The Future of Siri AI

Siri has been an example of what AI assistants can do for years. However, with the incoming incorporation of AI across Apple devices and platforms, Siri is likely in for a massive update. It is no accident that the colors of the WWDC 2024 branding are similar to those of the Siri icon. Perhaps Siri will get smarter, better able to answer complex questions, and discern subtext than she is. Perhaps she will work within native apps like Photos, and you can ask her to erase a subject or remove it from the background. There's a lot of room to speculate, and all the rumors are getting people pretty excited for the event.

RCS Support for Messages

Aside from AI, the biggest news for iOS 18 is that Apple plans to support RCS messages. In Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter back in November, he announced that Apple would embrace RCS messages after a long battle against adopting the standard for more than a year. Using RCS means that iPhone and Android users can send each other larger files and communicate more seamlessly in group chats and text over Wi-Fi. This is a big win for iPhone users with Android best friends and family members. It does pose a question about the green and blue texts and whether, with the incorporation of RCS messaging, the color distinction will go away. That would certainly be a huge adjustment!

Home Screen Updates

Gurman has also spearheaded some rumors about potential upgrades to Home Screen customization. We are all familiar with the press-and-hold wiggle system that Apple currently has in place. While the Home Screen would still snap icons into place on an invisible grid, according to these rumors, with iOS 18, you would be able to leave blank spaces or blank rows and columns. This is great news for people who like to customize their Home Screens or people who just want to have less icons on any given screen.

Accessibility Updates

Another interesting rumor suggests that Apple could update Accessibility with several new options. One of these is called Adaptive Voice Shortcuts. This would allow users to map a specific verbal phrase to an accessibility feature. Users would create a custom statement and choose the accessibility setting they wish to use with said phrase. Adaptive Voice Shortcuts gives users the ability to toggle existing accessibility features like Voice Control, VoiceOver, etc.

Freeform App Updates

Industry sources have reported to Mac Rumors that the Freeform app will receive additional updates and bug fixes in iOS 18. The biggest addition rumored to be coming to the app is a feature called "Scenes." This will give users the option to select specific sections within their boards to navigate quickly. Once named, users will have the ability to return to that area after viewing other places on the board. Users will be able to edit scenes later and collaborate with others. Additionally, Freeform Scenes will be compatible with iCloud.

Let us know which rumors you think will come true for iOS 18!

WWDC 2024: The Year of AI

What to Know

* Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference will be held June 10–14, with the keynote on June 10 at 10 a.m. PDT.

* We can expect to get details on what to expect with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11.

* Apple is anticipated to announce plans to incorporate generative AI in its software.

Apple's 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference will be held June 10–14, with the keynote address being delivered on June 10 at 10 a.m. PDT. We can expect to hear about iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11 at the keynote, but sometimes, there are other surprises in store! This year, it looks like the WWDC will be all about generative artificial intelligence, how Apple will incorporate this new and innovative technology into their software, and what the future of Apple AI will look like! Let's go over everything we know about WWDC 2024.

iOS 18 & macOS 15: The AI Update

In the last year alone, AI has proliferated in the media and culture. With the popularity of generative AI like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Midjourney, it is no surprise that Apple also has AI plans in the works

That's why this particular software update is rumored to be massive. In a shareholder meeting back in February, Tim Cook said that Apple plans to "break new ground" and has been investing a "tremendous amount of time and effort" into AI. That was all but confirmed in a not-so-subtle hint given by Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, in a tweet on Tuesday.

The tweet itself shares a colorful graphic displaying the logo for the 2024 WWDC, a swirling holograph of colors that look markedly similar to Siri's, telling everyone to mark their calendars for June 10–14. He writes, "It’s going to be Absolutely Incredible!" The capitalization of the last two words is what's known as an Easter egg, a hint that Apple likes to give about what might be coming next. The only thing left to speculate about is what that means for iOS 18 and what exactly generative AI might look like on an iPhone or Mac.

Perhaps Siri will get smarter, better able to answer complex questions, and discern subtext than she currently is.

No More Apple ID?

Sources close to Apple reported to Mac Rumors in February that Apple is considering replacing the Apple ID name with "Apple Account." Last year, with Mac Sonoma, they changed "System Preferences" to "System Settings", so the Apple ID could be next for a rebrand.

Additionally, Apple might expand support for custom font sizes on the Mac. Custom font sizes allow users to choose the size of the font for individual apps to set their preferred size for reading. Currently, custom font sizes are only available on five apps on the Mac, including Calendar, Finder, Mail, and Messages. With macOS 15, the feature will expand to Books, News, Stocks, Tips, and Weather.

Fine-Tuning the Vision Pro

Now that the Vision Pro has been available for a year, Tim Cook confirmed that it will launch internationally, and this might roll out during the conference. Rumors abound that we'll be receiving VisionOS 2.0 at WWDC 2024, which will bring a host of updates after feedback from the initial launch. The Vision Pro is also rumored to be testing drawing apps like Freeform to work with the Apple Pencil, so we may see increased utility for this cool device that currently lacks a clear role within the culture.

Hardware

As far as hardware goes, Apple doesn't typically release new Macs, iPhones, or iPads at the WWDC. However, with the announcement of the Vision Pro at WWDC 2023, there's no telling what might be unveiled at the conference. A few devices are about due for an update, and some others are rumored to be in the works. If Apple does unveil hardware, there are a few potential devices it might be.

iPad Pro &d iPad Air

Gurman wrote in his newsletter at the beginning of March that we might be looking at a springtime release date for new iPads. We could potentially get a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air with an M2 chip, two new iPad Pros with an M3 chip and OLED displays, a new Magic Keyboard, and an Apple Pencil. If these iPads and accessories don't drop in April, they might be released during WWDC 2024.

Air Pods

While the Air Pods are not rumored to receive any major hardware updates or overhauls, a massive software update is rumored to roll out. Gurman writes that Apple is readying a major software-based development with hearing aid functionality. Since the WWDC is all about new software, we might just see Apple attempt to take on the multibillion-dollar hearing aid industry, to which Gurman remarks, "It could be the start of something big."

WWDC 2024: When & How to Watch

The WWDC 2024 keynote will be given at 10 a.m. PDT on June 10. This year, the conference will include in-person events, but the keynote will be streamed online for anyone who wants to watch it live. Here's how to watch WWDC 2024:

Apple Watch Band Stuck? How to Remove a Stuck Apple Watch Band

What to Know

* If your Apple Watch band won't come off, there may be grime in the strap's locking mechanism.

* Apple says you can "hold your Apple Watch under lightly running, warm, fresh water" or use "a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes" to clean the watch.

What do you do if you want to remove an Apple Watch band, but the Apple Watch band won't come off? Don't worry; we'll show you how to take off an Apple Watch band without damaging your Apple Watch.

How to Remove a Stuck Strap on an Apple Watch

We've already gone over how to change your Apple Watch band; it's a simple process. But, what happens if you try to hold down the band release button and slide the band across to remove the strap as usual, but the Apple Watch band won't come off? At this point you're probably wondering, "Why won't my Apple Watch wrist band come off?" Most likely because the strap's locking mechanism is contaminated with grit and grime. So, are you still wondering, "How do I get my Apple Watch band unstuck?" By cleaning it, of course!

According to Apple, you can clean your Apple Watch with "a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes." Apple instructs users to, "gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your Apple Watch and your Solo Loop, Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, Ocean Band, or metal band. Don't use on fabric or leather bands. Don't use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don’t submerge your Apple Watch in any cleaning agents."

For visible debris, Apple recommends, "If your Apple Watch has substances or debris visible in places such as the speaker ports, you can hold your Apple Watch under lightly running, warm, fresh water until it's clean. Soaps and other cleaning products shouldn’t be used."

Note: Do not use any other lubricants, cleaning products, compressed air, or abrasives.

Now, you can remove the Apple Watch band that's stuck. Here's how to get an Apple Watch band off; any style of band!

* Remove your Apple Watch from the charger and turn it off.

* Use a Q-Tip to press back and forth along the band release button several times to try and get it to release. Hold the release button down to see if the band can slide out now.

* If this doesn't work, use a Q-Tip dipped in 70 percent isopropyl alcohol, then squeeze to remove the excess liquid. Gently swab on and around the edge of the band and the band release button. If you have a fabric or leather band, avoid touching the wet Q-Tip to the strap, as you may damage it.

* Let your Apple Watch sit for a few minutes, then press the band release button with a dry Q-Tip again to try and release the strap.

* You may need to try this a few times before successfully removing the Apple Watch band.

* If the alcohol and Q-Tip solution doesn't work, "hold your Apple Watch under lightly running, warm, fresh water until it's clean" as Apple recommends.

* After you take off the strap, let all the components dry, then clean the metal end of the band and the slot on your Apple Watch to remove any remaining debris.

* Allow all components to completely dry before putting another Apple Watch band on.
