Samsung Demonstrates World’s First MCPTX Video Call on AWS

Samsung Electronics today announced a demonstration of the world’s first video call on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform using Mission Critical Push-to Talk, Data and Video (MCPTX, also known as Mission Critical Communications), a communications capability developed for first responders. It was enabled by the successful onboarding, integration and deployment on AWS cloud. This implementation was based on 3GPP Release 14 specifications.

 

The demonstration, conducted at Samsung’s lab in Korea, featured a complete line-up of Samsung’s latest MCPTX solutions, which delivers a multimedia-based communications experience designed specifically for first responders and public safety officials. It used Samsung’s MCPTX service platform, as well as the Samsung Galaxy XCover FieldPro – a rugged, secure first responder smartphone, purpose-built for public safety users – to show the power of mission critical multimedia communications in the field.

 

Samsung’s customers for MCPTX will have the option to deploy the solution on their on-premise servers or AWS cloud platform.

 

 

New Horizons in Public Safety

MCPTX delivers powerful data and video communications capabilities surpassing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) technology, which provides traditional voice-based service. It opens a new horizon in advancing public safety, enabling first responders to be simultaneously connected with hundreds of fellow responders with easy exchange of videos, images, files and more during an emergency. This technology will help improve situational awareness and information accuracy, especially in times when public safety plays a pivotal role against local disasters or urgent threats.

 

 

Cloud-Based Benefits

The demonstration also highlights the key benefits that public cloud networks can bring to an MCPTX deployment. This approach enables rapid deployment and improves scalability and flexibility of public safety networks for operators, by reducing the time spent on in-house data center deployment and allowing them to adjust the usage of resources as needed. Also, the service can seamlessly failover to another part of the cloud as needed, increasing overall reliability.

Samsung Networks has been a leader in advancing next generation technologies for the public safety arena. Its Mission Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT) solution has been operational in Korea’s Public Safety LTE (PS-LTE) network since 2018, supporting voice and text communications (Link). This solution has been also commercially deployed across six different railway lines as part of the nation’s LTE-Railway (LTE-R) network, providing communications for station staff and train crews (Link).  Additionally, Samsung’s MCPTT solution has been recognized by various governments and operators around the world for its reliability and capability. The new MCPTX solution is the upgraded version of the MCPTT with enhanced capabilities, enabled by 3GPP release 14.

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe, our thoughts are with each and every one of you. We know this situation has affected each of you differently and that COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on our society. Despite this challenging time, we also see hope in our resilience. We are demonstrating how, as a global community, we can come together – regardless of location or circumstance – to address what may be one of the most important challenges of our lifetimes.

 

In navigating these uncertain times, Samsung has an important role to look after our employees, support our customers, and aid our communities. We are dedicating resources to help those in need and help us, as a society, emerge stronger on the other side.

We have established regional response teams around the world to provide our employees with resources and updates on the latest guidelines from health authorities. We have restricted business travel to only mission-critical journeys and have strongly advised employees to work from home where possible. Giving Back to Our Communities

Since January, Samsung has donated USD 29 million worth of funds and goods to governments and communities that have been most affected by COVID-19 to help with their relief efforts, including the purchase of medical supplies and hygiene kits, such as face masks. We are donating smartphones to patients in quarantine to help them keep in touch with their families and friends, as well as air purifiers and other appliances to hospitals and quarantine centers. We are also donating tablets to educational institutions so that children can continue to learn outside of the classroom, and are making our CSR education modules available online so that children have access to more enriching content at home.

 

In Korea, among the first countries hit, we provided local authorities a company facility to operate as a care center for patients to assist with the country’s containment efforts. Also, our engineering teams are working with companies in Korea that produce face masks to help them boost production by improving factory layouts and manufacturing processes, and in some cases, are creating molds for mask production. Because of our efforts, one of the companies was able to more than double its daily production.

 

We will continue to use our technology and resources to address the urgent needs of those working to combat the threat and impact of COVID-19. This is based on one unwavering principle that has guided us through our history: to create technology that contributes to a better global society.

 

Now, more than ever, we must band together to not only overcome this challenge, but emerge stronger, together. [The Future of Viewing] ① QLED 8K: Where AI Upscaling Meets Deep Learning

In recent times, screen picture quality has transcended high definition – these days, it’s all about ultra-high definition. Although today’s hardware has been developed to support not just 4K content but 8K content as well, only recently has content begun to actually be produced to 8K quality standards. Therefore, in order to improve the video display quality of content made before 8K existed, upscaling technology exists to keep up with today’s ultra-high definition standard.

 

Samsung Electronics’ 2020 QLED 8K TV lineup continuously receives praise for its devices’ innovative display quality, sound, design and many other areas. In particular, the range showcases an impressive evolution with regards to its video upscaling technology, at the core of which is Samsung’s AI Quantum Processor 8K.

 

Samsung Newsroom interviewed the team from the Picture Quality Solution Lab of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business to learn more about this revolutionary technology.

Leveling Up Deep Learning for Optimized Upscaling

When a low-resolution video plays on a high-resolution display, the resulting image quality can be below a viewer’s expectations. AI (artificial intelligence) upscaling is a technology that converts low-resolution videos into ones of more vivid and natural resolutions by analyzing the video data and adapting it intelligently.

 

In 2018, Samsung Electronics implemented its machine learning-based AI 8K upscaling technology for the first time. This technology harnesses machine learning wherein a human-designed algorithm intelligently analyzes the various video qualities, including line, light and color, and improves each of these for an improved display resolution. Such deep learning capabilities permit a TV to analyze and process video features whilst simultaneously learning thanks to an artificial neural network that acts in the same way as the human brain.

 

The members of Samsung’s Picture Quality Solution Lab focused on developing deep learning algorithms that enable displays to always showcase optimum video qualities without human intervention. “Deep learning enables more precise and efficient image quality improvements than can be achieved by humans alone,” noted Hyungjun Lim, who developed the AI upscaling technology’s texture generation method.

 

This operational advantage is what led the team to develop an AI upscaling technology that combines machine learning with deep learning – Samsung’s AI Quantum Processor 8K. “Previous machine learning technology brought about enhanced sharpness to display picture quality, but now our technology can also offer more delicate texturing,” noted Hyunseung Lee, who developed enhanced edge sharpness for the AI Quantum Processor 8K. “Images with complicated textures, like mountain or grass landscapes, can now be upscaled into 8K quality more naturally.”

 

 

 

Solving the Conundrum of Deep Learning

Although deep learning has limitless potential, there are still obstacles to be overcome. The Picture Quality Solution Lab team had to go through countless trial-and-error scenarios in order to make their technology market-ready. “It was difficult for us, at first, to clearly follow and comprehend the algorithm being developed by the artificial neural network of the processor,” highlighted Cheon Lee, the developer of the AI Quantum Processor 8K’s network structure and learning method. “The artificial neural network’s high hardware chip power consumption was an issue we had to solve, too.”

 

After a lengthy development process, Samsung was eventually able to solve the problems that had arisen thanks to its range of differentiated technologies. “We achieved the highly efficient display quality performance of our processor by making it a hybrid technology that combines complexity along with different aspects of deep learning and machine learning,” explained Lee.

 

 

Dreaming Bigger, Better and More Realistic with AI        

It wasn’t that long ago that the day-to-day application of AI-powered technologies was but a distant dream to us. Nowadays, technology has improved rapidly to the end of improving the lives of people across many different areas of everyday life.

 

 

“We are now able to categorize videos of differing quality levels in a more detailed way while also bringing these AI categorization technologies to the commercial market,” noted Seungho Park, who worked the AI Quantum Processor 8K’s noise elimination and improving the detail contrast range. “Such technologies permit next-generation displays, such as The Wall, to be able to showcase all kinds of videos at the most realistic qualities possible today.”

 

This AI-powered innovation is not just limited to upscaling technologies. There exist a variety of ways to harness AI to improve the screen qualities of displays, including video quality categorization, noise elimination, data-compression-caused distortion restoration and spatial or time-based resolution restoration, to name just a few. “Our goal is to continue Samsung’s legacy of providing leading TV viewing experiences by combining the advantages of our next-generation displays with AI technologies that can restore videos to realistic-level qualities, regardless of their original qualities and resolutions,” affirmed Park. The future of QLED 8K is looking bright.

[Editorial] Samsung Takes 5G and AI to the Next Level with Galaxy S20 Series

 

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon to discuss Samsung’s latest mobile innovation, the Galaxy S20 series, and how the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform enables new and immersive experiences powered by 5G. It’s another step in Samsung’s democratization of 5G.

 

The Galaxy S20 series empowers our consumers to engage with their smartphones in new ways, which is why we focused on enabling 5G. The high-speed and ultra-low latency of the Galaxy S20 series will allow users to upload, stream and download content at unprecedented rates1. Because we know our consumers want full access to 5G connectivity regardless of where they are or what carrier they use, the Galaxy S20 series offers 5G support for all types of 5G networks, regardless of frequency2. This is only the beginning.  

 

 

2020 will be the Year of Galaxy 5G

We want 2020 to be the year that every consumer experiences the benefits of 5G connectivity, starting with the Galaxy S20 series. Our work with partners and software developers has led to new discoveries where 5G is able to elevate mobile streaming, gaming and communication, and these partnerships will continue to deliver the next wave of 5G-powered features and technologies. We are excited to bring consumers premium 5G-ready devices across several different categories, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and wearables—all available across a wide range of price points.

 

In 2019, we captured the majority of the 5G device market share with over 6.7 million 5G-enabled smartphones shipped. In 2020, we will make 5G even more accessible as we bring Galaxy 5G-ready devices to twice as many countries.3

Samsung’s CDU50 Next Generation Baseband Unit Advances 5G Evolution with Cutting-Edge Technologies

Samsung Electronics today announced the commercial availability of its next generation Baseband Unit (BBU), the CDU50. The new solution was first commercialized in Korea and will be commercially launched in the U.S. and other global markets in the second quarter of this year.

 

Samsung’s CDU50 offers increased performance in comparison to the prior model, while supporting all LTE and 5G NR network frequencies in one unit. The BBU can support both Distributed RAN (DRAN) and Centralized RAN (CRAN) configurations. With these improvements, carriers can achieve increased flexibility in managing a network and meaningful cost reduction.

 

Key enhanced features of the next generation BBU are:

 

  • Enhancing performance: Six times increase in capacity supporting a greater number of cells and nearly two times faster network throughput with Samsung’s new 5G modem.
  • Single unit supporting both LTE and 5G NR: Enables convenient operation of network, and saves installation space while reducing CAPEX and OPEX.
  • Supporting both DRAN and CRAN: Increased operational efficiency through improved network reliability and resource management, as well as performance enhancements and cost savings.
  • Improving connection flexibility: Support both CPRI and eCPRI connections to bring greater flexibility in network deployments.

 

“CDU50 delivers a powerful networks product that can help operators migrate from 4G to 5G more smoothly, while reducing costs, and offering greater performance with the same footprint when compared with our previous version,” said Jaeho Jeon, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Now available in the market, this will enable mobile operators to create a path to providing a higher level of customer service. Galaxy S20 Lights a New Path for Photography with High Resolution Sensors and Space Zoom Technology

Here’s an up-close look at the new technology behind the Galaxy S20’s camera.

 

 

Capture with Crystal Clarity: 108MP/64MP High Resolution

More resolution means more details. The Galaxy S20’s camera offers super-high resolution, so you can capture the details every time.  The Galaxy S20 Ultra features a 108MP sensor, while the S20 and S20+ feature a 64MP sensor. Although cropping a shot used to mean losing details, with the high-resolution sensors on the Galaxy S20 you have plenty of resolution to crop and still get crisp, clear images.

 

 

It all starts with a fundamental change to the sensor architecture, both in terms of the size of the image sensor and the technology incorporated within. The larger sensors take in more light, so you get rich image quality even in low light situations.

 

 

The S20 Ultra takes things a step further with the 108MP sensor which switches between nona-binning and re-mosaic technologies to provide images with more clarity even in very low light or bright environments.

 

  • Nona-binning for superior image quality: Nona-binning technology merges nine pixels into one, so the 108MP sensor provides a 12MP photo. Larger pixels produced by the nona-binning technology can capture more light for improved clarity, even in low light conditions.

 

  • Re-mosaic in bright light conditions: Re-mosaic re-arranges color pixels to bring out more details. The re-mosaic algorithm remaps pixels into a conventional RGB pattern, producing more detailed images in bright light conditions. You can easily switch to the 108MP Mode in the Quick Settings menu: Camera > Photo > Ratio > 108MP.

 

 

 

See Further, See Better: Space Zoom with Telephoto Lens

The Galaxy S20’s Space Zoom technology uses a combination of Hybrid Optic Zoom, and super resolution zoom technology which includes AI multi-frame processing (AI-powered digital zoom) to ensure that even when you are far away, you can zoom in close.

 

The Galaxy S20’s new Hybrid Optic Zoom combines an advanced high-resolution image sensor with an all new lens, which is designed to provide more value to users than traditional optical zoom does. Thanks to this new technology, the Galaxy S20 and S20+ can achieve 3x Hybrid Optic Zoom, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra can achieve 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom. With AI-powered digital zoom, you can see even further, up to 30x on the S20 and S20+ and up to 100x on the S20 Ultra.

 

 

To achieve 100x zoom, the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s uses a folded lens and a high-resolution sensor. The folded lens provides up to 10x Hybrid Optic Zoom, while super zoom resolution technology brings an additional 10x zoom with AI multi-frame processing to reduce hand shaking and quality loss at high zoom levels. Images produced are clear thanks to the combination of the lens optics and a sensor crop on the high-resolution sensor.

 

  • 48MP Sensor: The sensor on the S20 Ultra is a 48MP sensor which switches between tetra-binning and re-mosaic depending on the shooting conditions, such as brightness level or zoom ratio. Tetra-binning combines 4 pixels into 1, resulting in a 12MP photo with larger pixels. When the RGB pixels are re-arranged with the re-mosaic technology, each pixel operates independently to use a sensor crop and provides up to 10x high ratio zoom.

 

  • Folded lens: The Galaxy S20 Ultra leverages a folded zoom lens to squeeze more zoom capability into a small space. The lens lays flat and is positioned at the bottom of the camera on the phone. Light coming in from the back of the phone is redirected by a prism into the lens, refracting to the right at a 90-degree angle through a series of stacked optical elements which increases the focal length, much like the way a periscope works.  Cutting down both the height and width of the camera, we are able to deliver groundbreaking zoom capabilities.

QLED 8K SMART Signage Now Operational 24/7

This year at ISE, Samsung will unveil the latest 2020 QLED 8K SMART signage – the world’s first 8K display capable of 24/7 operation.

 

The latest QLED 8K signage (model QPT-8K) features exceptional picture quality. Samsung QLED TVs are known for captivating image presentation, HDR10+ technology and 100 percent color volume, plus perfect color accuracy and 2,000 nit peak brightness. The new signage is designed to be wall-mounted and is available in 65-, 75-, 82- and 98-inch versions perfect for a wide range of business needs.

 

Equipped with the AI Quantum Processor 8K, it has built-in 8K AI upscaling and deep-learning capabilities that can automatically upscale non-8K content to pristine and true-to-life 8K resolution. Some of the display’s latest features provide enhanced functionality for industries, such as healthcare, to take advantage of the true-to-life visual clarity and detail of 8K. With DICOM simulation mode*, healthcare professionals can view grayscale medical images, including X-rays and MRI, for non-diagnostic purposes; thanks to Samsung’s superior display technology, images are seen in exceptional detail and clarity.

 

The display also comes with Samsung’s powerful Tizen 5.5 operating system and supports connectivity with up to four different content sources all of which can be displayed simultaneously in 4K resolution, for a wide range of business use-cases where multi-screens are needed. Samsung & Niio Art Launch Prestigious Global Digital Art Competition Celebrating Visual Arts on ‘The Wall’

 

Samsung Electronics is today announcing the launch of an open call competition in collaboration with Niio, a premium platform for new media art. Now open for entries from nascent, emerging and established artists, the Samsung The Wall x Niio Art Awards aims to discover the most inspiring digital art from around the world. Entrants will compete for a chance to be exhibited internationally on Samsung’s The Wall, the highest quality, large form factor 4K Micro LED digital art canvas, and qualify for up to $15,000 in cash prizes. The competition will culminate in summer exhibitions at ten showcase locations including Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. 

 

The first-prize winner of the competition will be invited to attend the unveiling event of their winning entry at Samsung’s The Wall showroom in May. All winners will be selected by a panel of renowned experts in visual art. When assessing each submission, the judges will be looking for artworks that display artistic and conceptual excellence, including creativity, originality and detail.

Samsung Electronics Australia Donates 1 Million AUD to Support Bushfire Efforts

Samsung Electronics Australia (Samsung) has donated $1 million (AUD) toward efforts to fight and prevent bushfires.

 

Mr W.J. Song, President, Samsung, said: “The devastation caused by the Australian bushfires has been felt across Samsung offices globally and our hearts go out to everyone that has been impacted. It has been incredibly humbling to see the Australian community rally together and offer any support they can during this time.

 

“Samsung has made this $1 million donation to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and we are committed to leveraging the power of our technology to address the challenging reality that bushfires present to Australia.”

 

In 2020, Samsung will evolve its ongoing corporate citizenship program to inspire young people and entrepreneurs to tackle this issue.

Samsung Global Goals: New Updates to the App Provide More Options to Donate

Last summer, Samsung Electronics announced its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals. Developed in 2015, the 17 Global Goals were set by the United Nations General Assembly and agreed upon by world leaders to help tackle some of the globe’s most pressing challenges.

 

In order to provide simple ways for Galaxy users to come together to support the Global Goals, Samsung and the UNDP launched an education and donation-based app, Samsung Global Goals. The app provides Galaxy users with the ability to learn more about the Global Goals and take part in small actions to help address the issues that matter most to them.

 

To provide the best user experience possible, along with more ways to get involved, Samsung is bringing a range of updates to the Samsung Global Goals app this January.

 

 

 

More Ways to Join in and Give Back

The Samsung Global Goals app offers a range of ways for users to support and give back to the Global Goals. By engaging with advertisements in the app, users are able to donate 100% of an ad’s revenue to the Global Goals. Samsung also recently announced that it will match all proceeds generated through the in-app advertisements to help maximize donations and make an impact, meaning that effectively 200% of ad revenue from the app will be donated to the UNDP by Samsung1.

 

 

The app also allows users to donate directly in support of the Global Goals to the UNDP. With the latest app updates, users will be able to use both Samsung Pay and Google Pay2 native payment mechanisms when donating. This will allow users to directly donate to the UNDP and the Goal of their choice by simply clicking and then confirming using biometric authentication – making it easier than ever to make a difference and donation to the #Global Goals campaign.

 

 

Samsung is also making it easier for users to opt into features that help generate more ad earnings, even when their phone is charging. Users can currently opt into the ‘Charge Screen ads’ feature in the Donate tab of the app, which will show ads on the device’s lock screen when it is plugged in to charge. As part of the update, the app will now prompt new users with a pop-up message providing information on this feature once their device has been plugged in to charge. This feature can be easily toggled off and on anytime in the Donate tab.

 

Additionally, users will be able to enjoy a wider range of lock screen options in the app’s Global Goals Lockscreen Wallpapers section, which can easily be managed in the app’s Settings page. The new wallpapers now support a wider selection of inspirational quotes, dynamic visuals, and graphic styles, making easier to stay engaged and inspired to contribute.

 

 

The update also brings several other UX upgrades to the Samsung Global Goals app. App notification messages have been streamlined for improved usability, each Goals’ Facts and Figures information is now more clearly linked to each Goal and users can more easily see which version of the app they are running. Galaxy users in Korea will also now be able to learn about the K-SDGs, or Korean Sustainable Development Goals, in the Samsung Global Goals app thanks to a collaboration with Korea’s Ministry of Environment.

Samsung Billboards and Teaser Film Hint at the Shape of Things to Come

In just a few weeks, Samsung will unveil its latest devices at Galaxy Unpacked 2020 and the excitement is palpable. Amidst the anticipation, the company released a teaser film on January 28, hinting at what it has planned for the launch. Continuing the themes of the billboards Samsung installed around Place de la Concorde in Paris earlier this month, the film proclaims that the company will “change the shape of the future”, providing a glimpse of Samsung’s long-term vision for mobile technology.

 

On the day the teaser film was released, Samsung also brought its iconic billboards to major landmarks around the world – Callao Square in Madrid, Duomo di Milano in Milan, Hydroproject Building in Moscow, Times Square in New York, and Central Railway Station and Marriott Hotel in Warsaw. From January 30 onwards, Galaxy fans in London and Seoul will also have the opportunity to see the stunning displays in person at Piccadilly Circus and COEX respectively.
