How to Use Alexa on iPhone

Does Alex work with an iPhone? It does, and it can be an excellent alternative to Siri depending on your home setup and personal preferences. Let's learn how to use Alexa on an iPhone and upgrade your virtual home assistant game. Jump To: * Why Alexa? * How to Use Alexa App on Your iPhone * How to Add the Alexa Widget to Your iPhone Why Alexa? Siri and Alexa both have their pros and cons, but Alexa's strengths are with those who are in the Amazon ecosystem. If you subscribe to Amazon Music, Amazon Prime, or other Amazon services, you'll be able to control these things through your iPhone once you get Alexa on it. You might also prefer Alexa's search features, or want to control Smart devices in your house that are hooked up through your Amazon account. For more virtual home assistance insight, check out our Tip of the Day. How to Use Alexa App on Your iPhone The first thing you'll need to do is download the Alexa app and get it set up, which we'll go over below. Once you have it, you can access it by either opening the app, or asking Siri to open the Alexa app. Here's how to connect Alexa to your iPhone. How to Connect Alexa to iPhone * Download Amazon Alexa from the App store. * Open the app and decide whether or not to allow Bluetooth access. It's recommend for anyone with Alexa-controlled devices. * Sign in to your Amazon account. * Confirm who is adding the device by either tapping your name or I'm Someone Else. * To confirm your name, tap Agree and Continue. * You'll be given the option to set up Voice ID. Either tap Agree and Continue or Skip. * If you're setting up Voice ID, tap OK for microphone access. * Follow the voice prompts to set up Voice ID. * Once Voice ID is set up, you'll be given the option to customize your features. Tap Set Up My Features or Later. * If you set up your features, you'll be asked about things like access to your contacts, notifications, and other family members. Set them up as desired. At step 4, you'll be asked if you want to set up a device. If you select yes, you'll be taken to the device setup process listed below. If you select No, but want to add one later, you can do this by tapping the add symbol on the top right of the Devices tab. How to Add a Device to the Alexa App * In your Alexa app in the Devices tab, tap the Add button on the top right. * Tap Add Device. * Select the kind of device you're adding. For this example, I'm using a Wyze lightbulb. * Follow the Alexa app instructions for how to add that device. Related: How to Put a Filter on a Photo or Video on Mac How to Add the Alexa Widget to Your iPhone The Alexa app makes it easy to control Alexa from your iPhone, but the Alexa widget keeps it right there on your Home screen for even quicker access. How Do I Set Up Apple Digital Legacy Contact on iPhone?

Apple Digital Legacy is a new feature that gives you peace of mind by letting you set up a contact who will have guardianship over your data when the time has come. The Legacy Contact Access Key makes it possible for them to download the data, delete it, and use or sell the Apple devices registered under the deceased user’s Apple ID. What's in This Article * How to Add an Apple Digital Legacy Contact * How to Get Into Deceased Person’s iPhone * What Happens to Your Phone When You Die How to Add an Apple Digital Legacy Contact An Apple legacy contact can be set so that Apple can give a trusted loved one access to all your digital content in the case of one's death. * Open Settings.   * Tap your profile picture.   * Select Password & Security.   * Tap on Legacy Contact.   * Tap on Add Legacy Contact. You may have to enter your password or use your Face ID to proceed.   * Tap Add Legacy Contact to proceed.   * Your iPhone may suggest a contact that’s part of your Family Sharing Group. You can also tap Choose Someone Else. I will proceed with the suggested contact.   * Tap Next.   * Tap Continue.   * You can select Print a Copy so that you can print out and add the key to unlock your Apple ID to your estate planning documents and/or living will.   * Tap Send a Message to send the unlock key to them.   * Tap Send. Or edit the message to add a personal touch.   * Apple will review the request before granting the contact access to your Apple ID, and they will require the contact to verify your birthday. Tap Update Birthday to make sure your birthday is entered correctly.   * Your changes will be saved whether you tap Done or update your birthday and tap Back.   * This is what the contact will receive if you decide to text them the unlock key: How to Get Into Deceased Person’s iPhone Setting up your Apple Digital Legacy is the best way for someone you trust to get access to your phone when the time comes. The great thing about this feature is that even if you or your contact change your phone number or Apple ID password, they will still be able to access your data. The legacy contact will receive instructions on how to do so. * You will need the Legacy Contact Access Key and a copy of the person's death certificate to prove that they are deceased. * Once Apple approves the request, all personal data will be accessible via iCloud.com on various Apple devices. * The contact will also be able to download a copy of the data via Apple's privacy portal, plus they will be able to restore their data from an iCloud backup. * Finally, they will be granted access to remove the Activation Lock so that the devices can be wiped, used, and even sold. What Happens to Your Phone When You Die Without Apple Digital Legacy set up, it is very difficult for a loved one to access your phone after your death. They would have to get a court order authorizing them as next of kin and contact Apple Support with that and the death certificate, but even then, all Apple would do is delete your data. If, like me, you have lots of photos and videos that you wish to pass on to your loved ones, setting up a legacy contact is the best and smoothest way to let others inherit your digital data. Now you know how to add legacy contacts to your iPhone. For more tips like passing on your legacy digitally, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.
