How to Make Each App More Accessible (2023)

The iPhone has a wide variety of accessibility settings, ensuring that anyone can use the device with ease. But maybe you don’t need to enable accessibility settings system-wide, which is why Apple has added an option to only apply certain accessibility options to specific apps. Why You’ll Love This Tip * Enable accessibility settings for only the apps that need it. * Make it easier to use apps that you normally have trouble using. * Make text easier to read, buttons easier to tap, and more. How to Use Per-App Settings This tip works on iPhones running iOS 16 or newer and iPads running iPadOS 16 or newer. What are per-app settings? Per-app settings allow you to enable accessibility settings on an app-by-app basis instead of applying them system-wide. This can be useful if, for example, you need your Messages app to have a bigger text size but not your Settings app. For more iPhone accessibility advice, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here’s how to use per-app settings: * Open the Settings app, and tap Accessibility. * Scroll down and tap Per-App Settings. * Tap Add App. * You can tap the search bar and type in the name of the app you want to enable accessibility settings for, or you can simply scroll through the list and find it. * Tap the app to add it to the list. * Once you’ve added an app, tap it to access its available accessibility settings. * Here, you can enable, disable, and adjust a broad array of accessibility options to make the app easier to use, such as changing text size, inverting colors, reducing motion, etc. * If you no longer wish to use accessibility settings on a per-app basis, you can tap Edit on the Per-App Settings screen. * Tap the minus sign. * Tap Delete. * Tap Done when you are finished. That’s how to enable per-app settings on your iPhone! Now you can turn on specific accessibility options for individual apps without making changes to your entire iPhone interface. How to Turn Off Teslas & Why You Shouldn’t Do It (2023)

What to Know * Since they don't have engines, Teslas don't "turn off" like traditional cars; they go into standby automatically. * To troubleshoot tech issues while driving, you can turn off the Tesla display and reboot it without having to pull over. Unlike gas cars, Teslas don't need to be turned off because they don't have an engine. Teslas turn off automatically, but they can be reset manually to fix glitches. I will also teach you how to turn off your Tesla's display to troubleshoot tech problems, even while you're driving. Jump To: * How to Turn Off Tesla Model 3, S, X, or Y Manually * Why You Don’t Need to Turn Off Teslas * How Do You Turn Off a Tesla Completely How to Turn Off Tesla Model 3, S, X, or Y Manually You might be surprised, but turning off Teslas completely is impossible without disconnecting the batteries. There is, however, a manual 'Power Off' button in the car's Safety settings. Powering the car off manually is no different than letting it go into standby mode automatically. Here's how to turn a Tesla off: * To turn off your Tesla manually, sit in the car and tap the car icon in the bottom left of the display. * Tap Safety. * Scroll down and tap Power Off. * Tap Power Off to confirm that you want to power off. The car will stay off until you interact with it by stepping on the pedals, opening doors or windows, or touching the screen. If you want to power cycle the car to reset it and fix any software glitches, wait for two minutes without touching the screen(s), pedals, doors, or windows. Once two minutes have passed, wake your Tesla by opening the door or stepping on the pedals. Many people wonder if they can turn off their Tesla via the phone app, but the answer is no. For more tech tips, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter! Pro Tip: If you want to keep the fan on during a power cycle, make sure it is on before you take the steps above. Your climate controls won’t work, but your fan will keep blowing. Why You Don’t Need to Turn Off Teslas Since getting my Tesla Model 3 in 2019, I have never turned my Tesla off like this because, in most cases, it isn't necessary. Getting out of the Tesla and closing the door will turn your car off automatically after 15-30 minutes, depending on the model of your car. Some people believe that turning off a Tesla using the steps above will save battery life, but it doesn't because you can't leave the car without powering it on again. The only perk to doing the manual power-off described above is to troubleshoot any glitches that may be happening. However, you can restart your Tesla's software by holding down both of the scroll buttons on your steering wheel simultaneously until your display turns off. This can be done while you're driving, and it takes a few minutes, so be aware that you will not be able to rely on autopilot or the GPS until your Tesla's computer is rebooted.  If you ever hear someone complain that their car turns off while driving but turns back on after a while, they probably initiated the software restart without realizing it. Fortunately, you can still drive your Tesla safely during a manual reboot!   How Do You Turn Off a Tesla Completely In order to actually turn your Tesla off completely, you will have to disconnect the low-voltage and high-voltage batteries. Warning: Disconnecting your Tesla's batteries yourself can damage your batteries, so it is best not to do it on your own. It is also easy to accidentally lock yourself out of the car because the doors, windows, trunk, and frunk lock automatically when they close and require the batteries to be connected to re-open. Now you know how to turn off Tesla model Ys, Xs, 3s, and Ss, although you may no longer want to! You also know why your car turns off while driving if you press the two scroll buttons, which can be scary if you don’t expect it! Why Won’t My iPhone Update? How to Get the New iOS Update (iOS 16)

What To Know * If the iPadOS or iOS 16 update is not showing up, you may not have a compatible device. * Your iPhone or iPad storage may be full, you may have a weak Wi-Fi connection, or the software update server has glitched or failed. * Try deleting the download, then download the update and try to install it again. You're excited to update your iPhone with the latest iOS or iPadOS, but the software update is taking forever, your iPad or iPhone is frozen during the update, you get an error message, or the iOS 16 update is not showing up! What to do? Here are the steps you need to work through to fix these issues and get the latest iOS or iPadOS update. Why Won’t My iPad or iPhone Update? How to Get the New iOS & iPadOS Updates (iOS 16 - iPadOS 16) When it's time for your iPhone to have an iOS update or your iPad to have an iPadOS update, it doesn't always go quickly or smoothly. If your iPhone or iPad won't update, there are several things that may be going wrong. Let's get into what to do if your download speed is slow, or your iPhone or iPad won't update. For more great iPhone and iPad update tutorials, check out our free Tip of the Day.  iPadOS 16 & iOS 16 Compatible Devices  If the iPadOS 16 or iOS 16 update is not showing up, the first thing to check is that your iPhone or iPad is compatible with the latest iOS update. Here's a list of iPhones and iPads that are compatible: * iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max * iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max * iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max * iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max * iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max * iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus * iPhone SE (second and third generation) * iPad Pro, iPad Pro 2, iPad Pro 3, iPad Pro 4, iPad Pro 5, iPad Pro 6 * iPad 5, iPad 6, iPad 7, iPad 8, iPad 9, iPad 10 * iPad mini 4, iPad mini 5, iPad mini 6 * iPad Air 2, iPad Air 3, iPad Air 4, iPad Air 5   If you aren't sure which iPhone or iPad you own, we have an article that will help you identify it no matter which model or generation. Why Is My Download Speed So Slow? Speed Up Your Software Update So, how long does iOS 16 take to install, anyway? The time it takes to download and install the newest iOS update or iPadOS update depends on its size and your internet speed. The slower the internet connection, the longer your software update will take. For me, it took about an hour from start to finish. Image courtesy of Apple If Apple's iPad or iPhone update has a slow download speed, there are a few things you can do. First, make sure your device is connected to power and has a strong internet connection. A Wi-Fi network is preferred. Next, You can speed up the process by not downloading other content at this time. Some people choose to download the software update and begin the installation in the evening, or another block of time when they don't need their iPhone or iPad, so there's plenty of time for the process to complete.  Make Sure You Have Enough iPhone & iPad Storage Make sure you have enough iPad or iPhone storage to download and install the iPadOS or iOS update. Major updates, like iOS 16, require a little over 5GB. Smaller updates, like iOS 15.6, don't require as much. You can check your iPhone storage, and your iPad's as well, then take steps to free up storage space if you don't have enough room for the iOS update. If you're getting a message that your iPad or iPhone storage is full, but it isn't, you can fix that as well.   What If You Can’t Reach the Apple Update Server? Image courtesy of Apple What happens if you get an "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update.", or "Unable to Install Update. Software update requires a network connection" message? In this case, tap Try Again or Retry to try and update your iPad or iPhone using your same Wi-Fi network. If you get the same error message, try using a different Wi-Fi network. And if that doesn't move things along, wait a while before trying again, in case Apple's servers are overloaded with so many people trying to update their devices at once.  Remove the iPadOS or iOS Update & Download Again If the software update failed and none of the above steps have fixed your iPad or iPhone update problems, you may need to delete the iOS update and download it again. To do this:  * Open the Settings app. * Tap General. * Tap iPad or iPhone Storage. * Find the iPadOS or iOS update in the list of apps. * Tap the update, then tap Delete Update. * Now, go back through the iOS update or iPadOS update process again; hopefully, it works this time! Update Your iPhone or iPad with a Computer If your iPad or iPhone software update failed even after using the steps above, or you don't see the update in Settings > General > iPad/iPhone Storage in the step above, you'll need to update your device with your Mac or PC.   If you have access to a Mac that's running macOS Catalina or later, you can update your device with the Finder. Before you update, be sure to back up your iPad or iPhone with iCloud or iTunes. If your Mac is using a Personal Hotspot on your iPad or iPhone, connect it to a different Ethernet or Wi-Fi network before you begin. Next: * Connect your iPad or iPhone to your Mac with a USB cable. * Click Finder to open.    * Click your device in Finder. Here's the fix if you don't see your iPhone or iPad in the Finder.  * Click General, then click Check for Update.  Image courtesy of Apple * Now click Download and Update, then follow the onscreen instructions to complete your iPadOS or iOS update. If you have a Mac that's running macOS Mojave or earlier, you'll need to update your iPad or iPhone using iTunes.  Time for Recovery Mode If your iPad or iPhone screen is stuck on the Apple logo without a progress bar for several minutes, or if your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone or iPad, it's time to use Recovery mode.  Warning: Before using Recovery mode, be sure that you have a backup of your iPhone. Recovery mode will completely erase your Settings and data, and you'll start over as if your device was brand new. Once you've wiped your iPhone or iPad with Recovery mode, it's time to restore from an iCloud backup, iTunes backup, or using Finder. At this point, you can start the iPadOS or iOS update process from the beginning, but if you've already followed all the steps in this article and still can't update, it's probably time to contact Apple Support.  Contact Apple Support By now, I hope you've been able to download and install the latest iPadOS or iOS update. If this still hasn't happened, it's time to contact Apple Support, because there may be a hardware issue that needs to be repaired. If you found this article helpful, check out our other troubleshooting guides for fixes on all kinds of Apple hardware and software problems. Fixed: Spotify Not Working on iPhone (2023)

What to Know * If Spotify is not opening on your iPhone, first try updating the app. If that doesn't work, uninstalling it and reinstalling or logging out and in it might fix the issue. * If Spotify says "No internet connection," check your Wi-Fi and your iPhone's Wi-Fi connection. * Check the Spotify server status as well as your account status to see if either of those are the cause of the problem. When Spotify is not responding, it can ruin everything from a workout to your day's whole vibe. Fortunately, there are many things to try, from restarting the app to checking with Spotify itself, so let's get started learning what to do when Spotify is not playing the songs you so desperately want to hear. How to Fix Spotify Not Working on iPhone Restart the App As always, if an app isn't working, the first thing you want to do is restart the app. This may correct whatever bug is causing the issues and get your app smoothly singing again. Update Spotify Bugs and glitches are frequently addressed by app updates. If restarting Spotify didn't do the trick, you can check for an update to see if there's one you've been missing out on. Restart Your iPhone If no updates are available and starting the app didn't help, it's time to restart your iPhone. Sometimes this can get the app back up and running the way it's intended! Log Out & Back In to Your Account Okay, we went through the basic troubleshooting steps, and they didn't help. Now, try logging out of your Spotify account and logging back in. This might offer the reset your app needs to start working again, especially if the issues stemmed from something in your account like a late Premium payment. Here's how to log out and in to your Spotify account: Jump to top * Open your Spotify app on your iPhone. * Tap the Settings icon on the top right. * Scroll down and tap Log Out. * Tap Log Out on the confirmation box that pops up. * Log back in using whichever method you used to create your account and follow the prompts. This may very well get things back on track. For more easy troubleshooting tutorials, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Check Your Spotify Premium Settings Many features are only available with Spotify Premium. For example, being able to play songs without an internet connection. When I travel abroad, I sometimes get a Spotify Premium subscription because without it, I can't take music along when I'm out on a run. If you can normally play music without an internet connection, but that ability has ceased, you might want to check your Spotify Premium settings. To do this: Jump to top * In your Spotify app, tap the Settings icon in the top right corner. * Tap Account. * Tap Premium. From here, you can navigate your Premium account to see if everything is up to snuff. Check Your Internet Connection If you don't have Spotify Premium, you won't be able to play music without some kind of internet connection. If Spotify says, "No internet connection," you'll know that's the issue. Check your Wi-Fi and data, make sure you're not in Airplane Mode if you don't have a Wi-Fi connection, and try turning both your Wi-Fi and cellular connections off and back on again. Jump to top Check Spotify for Issues Spotify has a webpage that lists ongoing issues that will be able to tell you if the issues you're encountering are on your end or theirs. While it can be frustrating to run into an issue you can't fix yourself, you'll know to just wait it out. If none of these fix your problem, you might want to contact Spotify support. Why Does My iMessage Keep Turning Off? Fix It Fast! (2023)

What To Know * There are several possibilities for why your iMessage keeps turning off, including a weak Wi-Fi signal or cellular connection. * Solve iMessage signing out randomly by opening your Messages settings, toggling off iMessage, then rebooting your iPhone and turning iMessage back on. * iMessage also may turn off because your iPhone or iPad has the wrong date and time set. Why are my messages green? When your messages are green when they should be blue, it means that iMessage is not working, or you've been signed out of iMessage. If you're not the one who signed out of iMessage, I'm sure you're wondering, "Why is my iMessage signed out?" We're here to help you find that answer, and fix the problem; let's get started.  Why Is My iMessage Signed Out? Fix It Fast! It's inconvenient and annoying when iMessage is not working because you can't send or receive iMessages. Instead, you'll have to use standard SMS messages (indicated by green messages instead of blue). This can eat into your texting plan, and run up a bill if you go over your limit. There are several things you can do to keep iMessage signed in and active, including updating the software on your iPhone or iPad, updating carrier settings, making sure that your two-factor authentication password matches the one you've set for iMessages, and making sure messages are sending from your phone number, not your email address. If your iMessage signed out randomly, let's figure out "why did my iMessage turn off?" Check out our free Tip of the Day for more great Messages tutorials. Check the Apple System Status Page One of the easiest steps to take when iMessage keeps turning off is to check Apple's System Status Page. This is because, from time to time, various Apple systems can have issues or go offline, and there's nothing you can do but wait for the issue to be resolved. In this case, you'll navigate to the Apple System Status Page, then look for the status of iMessage. As you can see, iMessage has a resolved issue, so this could be the whole cause of the problem! Turn Off iMessage & FaceTime, Then Reboot A quick way to deal with iMessage and FaceTime issues is to turn off these features, reboot your iPhone or iPad, then turn the features back on. To do this: * Open the Settings app. * Tap Messages. * Toggle off iMessages. * Now, go back and tap FaceTime. * Now, toggle off FaceTime. Now, reboot your iPhone or iPad, then go back into the Settings app and turn on iMessage and FaceTime on again.  Are Internet Problems Causing iMessage to Sign Out Randomly? There are several internet and Wi-Fi-related reasons why iMessage keeps turning off. You may have internet issues or a weak Wi-Fi signal, in which case there are a few steps you can take to improve your connection.  First, check your cellular and Wi-Fi signal bars at the top-right corner of your screen. Your cellular signal is indicated by how many of the four vertical bars are white. Your Wi-Fi signal is indicated by how many of the three gradually larger semi-circles are white. If either of these has no bars or only one bar, it means your cellular, Wi-Fi, or both signals are poor. If you have a weak Wi-Fi signal, move your Wi-Fi router closer to where you usually use your iPhone or iPad. Also, make sure your router isn't placed close to a microwave, which can interfere with signal strength, and elevate your router to boost its signal. Try moving to a location with a better cellular and/or Wi-Fi signal to see if iMessage stays signed in. If you live in or regularly travel to areas with poor cellular service, consider switching cellular service providers to one with better coverage.  If your Wi-Fi signal looks good, but iMessage keeps turning off, you can run an internet speed test like fast.com on your iPhone or iPad to see how many Mbps, or megabits per second, your Wi-Fi signal is providing. To learn your Wi-Fi connection's download and upload speed, as well as Ping (the reaction time of your connection, measured in ms, milliseconds, try Ookla.  If your Wi-Fi speed looks ok, try restarting by turning off your iPhone or iPad, then unplugging your modem and router for at least 30 seconds. Plug your modem and router back in, wait until no new indicator lights are blinking, then turn your device back on and see if things have improved. iPad or iPhone Storage Is Full If your iPhone or iPad has low or no storage, you'll see a lot of issues, including iMessage turning off by itself. You can check your iPhone storage and free up space if you discover that your storage is full, and this may get iMessage working properly again.  Check Your Date & Time Settings One issue that can cause iMessage to keep signing out is a problem with your device's date, time, and location settings. To make sure this isn't the case, or fix the issue: * Open the Settings app. * Tap General. * Tap Date & Time. * Toggle on Set Automatically. It will be green and to the right when enabled. If Set Automatically is already on, turn it off, then on again.  Reset Apple ID Password If iMessage signed out randomly, it's possible that your Apple ID has been compromised. Just in case this is the cause, change your Apple ID password.  Reset Network Settings on Your iPhone or iPad It's possible that your iPhone or iPad is having an internet connectivity issue that can only be solved by resetting your network settings. This is a fairly quick process and will remove your Wi-Fi connection, so you'll have to enter your password again. That's a minor inconvenience, considering how many issues this step can resolve! Factory Reset & Restore Your iPhone or iPad from a Backup (iCloud, iTunes, or Finder) As a last resort, you can restore your iPhone or iPad from a backup, whether that be iCloud, iTunes, or a Finder backup. When you do this, be sure to choose a backup made before iMessage started signing out randomly, so that you can back up from settings and data saved before this glitch started occurring.  By now, your Messages app should be working again. If not, contact your cellular service provider to make sure it's not an issue on their end. If things still aren't fixed, it's time to contact Apple Support. Be sure to read our other troubleshooting guides whenever you have a tricky problem with your Apple devices!  How-ToiPadiPhoneiMessageMessagesSettingsTroubleshootingiOSiPadOSCommunicationMaster your iPhone in one minute a day: Sign up here to get our FREE Tip of the Day delivered right to your inbox.
