What Does It Mean When Someone Has Notifications Silenced (iOS 17)

What to Know

* When Messages says Contact has Notifications Silenced, the person is in Do Not Disturb/Focus that disables notifications.

* Notifications silenced does not mean that you are blocked.

* Tap Notify Anyway to alert the person of your text even if their notifications are silenced.

Have you been wondering what "Notifications Silenced" means? Sometimes, when you text someone via Messages, you might notice that it says the person has notifications silenced. Don't panic! It means exactly what it says: the user has their notifications silenced. It doesn't mean you're blocked. You can usually choose to notify the person anyway. Here's how it works.

What Does It Mean When Someone Has Their Notifications Silenced

If you're wondering, "Why does it say notifications silenced?" it's usually because someone has entered Do Not Disturb or another Focus mode that disables their notifications. People do this for all different types of reasons, especially for work and sleep. Disabling notifications allows people to focus on other things without the notifications on their phones interrupting them. Most notably, seeing the "Notifications Silenced" message does not mean that you are blocked. Once the person switches off DND or whichever Focus they've engaged that silences notifications, you will be able to resume normal communication. Learn how to set up DND or other focus modes, and sign up for our free Tip of the Day to learn more tips about your iPhone!

How to Notify a Person Anyway When Notifications Are Silenced

When someone has their notifications silenced, you can usually still notify them anyway with the Notify Anyway feature. However, if someone has their iPhone silenced for whatever reason, they may be upset that they're being disturbed. Additionally, they may not be able to respond. Here's what it looks like:

* On your iPhone, go ahead and text someone even if their notifications are silenced.

* Tap the purple text that says Notify Anyway.

Once you do this, the message will do a little animation to emphasize that it has been sent with a notification to the recipient.

How to Resume Notifications on iPhone

What if you're the one who has notifications silenced? If you're wondering, "Why does it say I have notifications silenced," you might also want to know how to turn them back on. Notifications are usually silenced via Focus, especially Do Not Disturb. Follow the steps below to resume notifications on your iPhone.

* On your iPhone, swipe down from the top left screen.

* Press and hold the Focus button.

* Tap the Focus mode that has been enabled to turn it off.

* Or tap another Focus that allows notifications, like Personal.

And that's how you resume notifications! If your iPhone still shows that notifications are silenced, you might want to try turning your iPhone off and back on again. Additionally, some people have been reporting a glitch. If that's the case, then make sure that you're keeping your iPhone up to date with the latest iOS to fix any bugs and glitches. Otherwise, you can always take your iPhone to the Apple store or email Apple Support.

FAQ

* Does Notifications Silenced mean blocked? No, "Notifications Silenced" does not mean that you are blocked. It means that someone has enabled a Focus that silences all incoming notifications.

* How can you tell if someone silenced you on iMessage? If you're simply muted, you will not be able to tell. If you've been blocked, you will not get a delivery notification for your text messages, and if you were chatting with an iPhone user, the texts will turn green. If the person has all notifications silenced and chosen to enable the setting that alerts their contacts, you will see it when you open their message thread.

* Can notifications be silenced for one person? The easiest way to silence notifications from one person is by muting them in the Messages app. You can also set up a Focus where one or a few specific people are muted or silenced while in that mode. And blocking someone is always an option when other things don't seem to work.

And that's what notifications silenced means, why it says you have notifications silenced, and how to turn them back on again. Good luck, and happy texting!

Solved: Why Is the Time on My Lock Screen Dim? (iOS 17)

What to Know

* If your iPhone Lock Screen clock is dim, try restarting your device and checking for updates.

* The Sleep Focus can also dim the Lock Screen, so disable it if it is enabled.

* If all else fails, you can try resetting all settings, but this should only be a last-resort option.

Back in iOS 16, Apple added the option to customize your iPhone Lock Screen, including the option to add widgets and change the appearance of your clock. However, in iOS 17, some users have experienced a bug that causes the iPhone Lock Screen clock to dim. So why is the time on your Lock Screen dim? Let’s find out below

Jump To:

* Why Is the Time Faded on My iPhone Lock Screen?

* Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is the Time Faded on My iPhone Lock Screen?

Sometimes your iPhone Lock Screen clock can become dim without explanation. There isn’t a clear reason why this happens, other than it is simply a bug in the iOS software. Thankfully, there are some easy ways to resolve this issue. For more iPhone troubleshooting tips and tricks, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

Restart Your iPhone & Check for Updates

The most common solution for fixing when the time on your iPhone is dim is to simply restart the device. This can fix most minor software bugs. Once you reboot, the issue should be resolved. However, to be safe, check for updates and ensure you are updated to the latest version of iOS.

Check Lock Screen Customization Settings

Your iPhone’s Lock Screen clock might be dim because of certain personalization options. Check your Lock Screen customization settings, especially the clock color. Ensure the color of the clock is not set to a lower saturation.

Adjust Focus Settings

Certain Focus settings can affect the appearance of your Lock Screen, and dim the clock. This mainly affects the Sleep Focus:

* Open the Settings app, and tap Focus.

* Tap Sleep.

* Scroll down and tap Options, under Customize Screens.

* Tap the toggle next to Sleep Screen to enable and disable the dimming effect.

Note: The dimming effect only applies when this Focus is active.

That should help with preventing your Lock Screen clock from dimming.

Reset All Settings

If all else fails, you can reset your settings. This should only be a last-resort option, as this will wipe your current settings and restore them to factory settings.

Warning: Resetting All Settings will erase all current settings, including your Home Screen arrangement, wallpapers, saved Wi-Fi passwords, customization options, etc.

* Open the Settings app, and tap General.

* Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.

* Tap Reset.

* Tap Reset All Settings.

* Enter your passcode and tap Done.

Once your settings have been reset, you can customize your Lock Screen again, and the dimming bug should be fixed.

If none of the above solutions worked for you, there might be a more serious issue that needs to be addressed. In that case, I would recommend contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store for further assistance.

FAQ

How do you brighten iPhone screen? You can easily adjust your iPhone’s screen brightness from the Control Center. You can also change your brightness from your iPhone settings.

How do you change the color of the time on iPhone? Adjusting the color of the time on your iPhone can be done by pressing and holding on the Lock Screen wallpaper and then tapping Customize. From there, just tap the clock and select a color.

Google Search Not Working? Fix It Fast on iPhone & iPad (iOS 17)

What to Know

* Google not showing search results? Close and reopen the app, and make sure your internet connection is working.

* Google results not showing up still? Make sure the app is updated, and reboot your iPhone.

* You can also toggle Airplane mode on and off, clear the app cache, or uninstall and reinstall the Google app.

If a Google search is not working in the Google app or the Google Chrome app, you may get an error message like, "Unfortunately Google Search has stopped working", or "The request was not performed because there was no connectivity". Google Search Not Working? Fix It Fast on the iPhone & iPad

There are a few easy things you can do to fix things when Google won't show search results. First, close the Google app and reopen it to see if Google search is working again. Next, update the Google app, and update iOS and iPadOS. If these steps haven't gotten Google search to work, read on. Is Airplane Mode On?

Airplane mode disables all wireless and cellular signals from your iPad or iPhone. To make sure your iPad or iPhone isn't in AirPlane mode:

Open the Control Center, and make sure the Airplane Mode button is gray, not orange. You can also turn Airplane mode on, leave it a few seconds, then turn it off again and see if your Google search is working.

Check Your Wi-Fi & Cellular Data Connection

You need a Wi-Fi or cellular connection to do a Google search on your iPhone. So, make sure your internet connection is working by using a different app or feature to see if they're still able to connect and work as usual. You can also check your connection using iPhone icons.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla Model 3, Y, S & X (2023)

What to Know

* Tesla batteries hold a certain amount of kilowatt-hours (kWh), depending on the model.

* Tesla doesn’t officially state the battery capacity of its vehicles, but it can be estimated.

* Tesla drivers need to understand the Tesla kWh per mile conversion rate to figure out the total time and cost of charging.

If you ever plan on owning or driving a rental Tesla, then it is important to understand Tesla mileage per kWh. I'll explain how many kWh it takes to charge a Tesla based on its model and where to get the quickest speed for the best price.

Jump To:

* Understanding Tesla Battery Capacity & kWh Discrepancies

* How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla by Model & Type

* The Tesla Miles Per kWh Calculations: Speed, Time & Cost

* FAQ: How Long Does it Take to Charge a Tesla

Understanding Tesla Battery Capacity & kWh Discrepancies

Depending on the model, a Tesla battery can have a capacity of anywhere between 57.5 kWh and 100 kWh. Unfortunately, Tesla doesn't officially say what the battery capacity of its cars is. However, you can find out how many kWh it takes to charge your Tesla from 0% to 100% in the "Trips" tab on your Tesla touchscreen and use that to estimate total battery capacity.

What makes it a bit of a mystery is that some Tesla owners report driving up to 30 miles when their battery claims to be at 0%, so there do seem to be battery reserves. However, driving on a low battery is bad for the battery and can be dangerous. It is best to avoid running out of battery and even going below 20% for longer periods of time.

It is important to understand that there is always some kWh loss due to heat caused by the conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy. This means that it takes more than the total capacity of the battery to charge a Tesla fully. Usually, between 8 and 15 kWh are lost when charging a Tesla from 0% to 100%, regardless of the model.

That being said, it isn't recommended to consistently charge your Tesla to 100% as it can depreciate the battery more quickly. Just because the battery capacity may be 100 kWh, you may only be charging it up to 80 kWh, which may take 90 kWh because of energy loss. Let's look at how many kWh it takes to charge each Tesla model. Please keep in mind that older models may have a slightly different kWh capacity.

Warning

Battery capacity depreciates with time based on use. My 2019 Standard Range Plus Model 3 has depreciated 10% since I bought it brand new. It has around 80,000 miles, so my experience has been 1% depreciation every 8,000 miles. But this can vary depending on model, climate, usage, and charging habits.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla by Model & Type

While Tesla doesn't officially announce how many kWh the batteries of each model hold, it can be estimated. Therefore, all the figures below are estimates based on the 2023 Tesla models. It is possible for an older Tesla model to have a different capacity than the newest 2023 edition.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 is a sedan car, and it is the most basic and least expensive model. There are different types of Tesla Model 3, and each has a varying battery capacity:

* The 2023 Standard Range Tesla Model 3 (RWD) can hold up to 57.5 kWh.

* The 2023 Long Range Tesla Model 3 can hold up to 82 kWh.

* The 2023 Performance Tesla Model 3 can hold up to 82 kWh.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is an SUV car:

* The 2023 Tesla Model Y (AWD) can hold up to 67.6 kWh.

* The 2023 Long Range Tesla Model Y can hold up to 81 kWh.

* The 2023 Performance Tesla Model Y can hold up to 81 kWh.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S is the most luxurious model:

* The 2023 Tesla Model S can hold up to 100 kWh.

* The 2023 Tesla Model S Plaid can hold up to 100 kWh.

Older versions of the Tesla Model S have a battery capacity ranging from 60 kWh to 100 kWh.

How Many kWh to Charge a Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X has the most expensive entry-level price of any Tesla model and has falcon wing doors:

* The 2023 Tesla Model X can hold up to 100 kWh.

* The 2023 Tesla Model X Plaid can hold up to 100 kWh.

It can take up to 115 kWh to charge a Tesla Model X battery from 0% to 100%.

The Tesla Miles Per kWh Calculations: Speed, Time & Cost

It can be hard to calculate Tesla miles per kWh because it all depends on the car’s efficiency. Depending on whom you ask, you will be told that the newest Tesla Model 3 can get up to 5 miles per 1 kWh, while the more luxurious Tesla Model X can only do around 3 miles per 1 kWh due to its larger size.

If you check the energy consumption in your Tesla's "Trips" tab or use a third-party Tesla app such as Stats: For Model S/X/3/Y (Starting at $4.99/month), then you can find out the exact Wh of your vehicle uses to per mile. Since this varies greatly, it is best to check each vehicle individually. After 80,000 miles, My 2019 Tesla Model 3 has averaged 261 Wh per mile, which is roughly 4 miles per kWh.

It is important to know how much energy your vehicle uses when charging. Superchargers can charge at impressive speeds at a low cost, and this doesn't matter as much. But if you charge at home, some places price electricity differently depending on the time of day. If you want to save money, you can make sure you are charging when the cost per kWh is at its lowest.

The capacity of your Tesla battery will also impact how long it takes to charge your Tesla. Check out our article on how long to charge a Tesla to learn more about the different factors that affect charging time.

Now you know how many kWh it takes to charge a Tesla of any model! To recap, a Tesla with a battery capacity of 100 kWh, such as the 2023 Tesla Model X Plaid, may take as much as 115 kWh to charge from 0% to 100% because there is always energy loss. Plus, you may not always want to charge to 100%, so there really are many factors to correct and healthy Tesla charging!

FAQ

* How much does it cost to charge a Tesla? On average, it costs between $10 and $20 to charge your Tesla at home fully, and the average cost per kWh at a Supercharger is $0.25.

* How many Tesla miles per charge? This depends on the Tesla model; the rated range of a new Tesla is anywhere between 262 miles and 405 miles on a full charge—after time, the battery will depreciate, and the total mileage per charge will drop.

* How long does a Tesla take to charge? If you use an official Tesla Supercharger, 15 minutes of charging can get you as much as 160 miles, depending on the Tesla model. Other charging methods have extremely varying times.

10 Best Ways To Use the iPhone 15 Action Button (iOS 17)

What to Know

* It may seem like there are only eight options when setting up the Action Button, but the possibilities are unlimited.

* Shortcuts make it possible to control your smart home, run complex routines, and more.

* The Action Button can be turned off completely or function just like the old mute/unmute switch.

The iPhone 15 Action Button is an exciting feature, but it can be a little overwhelming to decide what to do with it since there are so many options. I'll help you figure out the best ways to use this button that are actually practical. Let the customization begin!

10 Best Ways To Use the iPhone 15 Action Button

The Action Button is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, and it works with iOS 17 or later software. Once you’ve learned how to customize your Action Button, the next step is to pick the best way to use it. I've personally tested hundreds of options, and I even wrote the iPhone Life Shortcuts Guide for our premium subscribers that includes some of the best iPhone shortcuts I’ve discovered, so here are my personal favorites that will actually bring value to your life. You may want to learn how to make shortcuts on the iPhone because you may need to make a shortcut to create your dream Action Button.

1. Open the Camera App to Never Miss a Moment

As an ex-Android user, I find it frustrating that I couldn't open my Camera app as quickly as I wanted to, and the Action Button finally changed that. I believe that the Camera app option is the most universally practical way to use the button because most other things are already easy to do using the Control Center or voice commands. I love that I can pick between photo, video, portrait, selfie, and portrait selfie modes. I can now have my Camera app open and ready as I pull it out of my pocket or purse.

Pro Tip

Don't forget that you can take photos while recording videos, or you can hold the shutter button in photo mode to start filming. This is faster than switching and can help you capture the moment in a pinch. For more iPhone tips and tricks, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

2. Control Your Tesla (Or Another Compatible Smart Car)

If you’re like me, you probably forget to set the climate in advance and end up sweating or freezing until the AC kicks in. The Tesla app recently became compatible with Apple’s Shortcuts, so you can easily make a shortcut that sets the climate of your Tesla (or any other compatible smart car) with a simple voice command. The Action Button takes it one step further and lets you activate the shortcut with the press of a button.

Note

If you don’t have a smart car, you can still create a shortcut or automation that takes advantage of any smart gear in your home. This could be locking/unlocking your smart lock, activating your HomePods, activating a smart purifier, etc. With so many possibilities, it is important to consider if you really need to be able to run a Shortcut with the Action Button or if using a voice command suffices—in many cases, a voice command may be more convenient than a button.

3. Enable Your Favorite Accessibility Feature

Apple has been adding lots of accessibility features over the years, and the Action Button can be your very own iPhone accessibility button. If you need to use the Magnify feature to zoom in (iPhone screen magnifier), voice-over, or other text-to-speech, or if you find it easier to see or focus using color filters, the Action Button can help! One of the eight Action Button categories is Accessibility. If one of the many built-in Accessibility features (or Magnifier) is not what you are looking for, you may be able to create your own unique Accessibility feature using the Shortcuts app.

4. Turn the Pages of Your Digital Book

Most eReaders, such as Kindles or Nooks have a designated button to turn to the next page. But when you read on an iPhone, you have to swipe or tap to get to your next page. To do this, you need to create a new Shortcut and add the action called Next Page. Then, you select Shortcut in your Action Button settings and pick your new shortcut. Next time you read in the Books app, you can press the Action Button to turn to the next page.

5. Find Out What Song is Playing

If you’ve downloaded the free Shazam: Music Discovery app, then you already know how it works. Shazam is one of the third-party apps that offers actions in the Shortcuts app. To add the Shazam shortcut, you just need to add Recognize Music in the Shortcuts app. Then select this shortcut in the Action Button settings, and you'll be able to discreetly tap the button and get information about the song playing without having to interrupt your conversation or disrupt anyone around you.

6. Play A Sound—Funny Fart or Training Bell

There are many reasons why you might want to be able to play a sound at a moment's notice. It could be to make a fart joke with your friends; it can be used as a timer during game night, a training tool for your pets, the list goes on. To do this, you need to first download the free Thwip: Soundboard app. Then, create a Play Sound shortcut and select the sound you want played. Then select this shortcut in your Action Button settings.

7. Add Calendar Event with the Press of a Button

If you like to stay on top of your schedule and responsibilities using the Calendar app, then you need to do this. It can take several moments to open up the Calendar app, add a new event, and input all the details. On the way there, you may see an email, message, or social media notification that may derail you from the task at hand. Instead, create a Create New Event shortcut and select it in the Action Button settings. Now, you can add new events in peace without unlocking your phone and getting distracted.

8. The Quickest Way to Access ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a new way for people to get answers to questions or learn new things using AI. Download the free ChatGPT app and create an Ask ChatGPT shortcut. Then, you can select this shortcut in your Action Button settings. ChatGPT can be used just like Google, but you can input more complex prompts and get tailored advice based on thousands of internet results that would take hours to read through manually.

9. Turn Your Flashlight On & Off

It's pretty easy to turn your flashlight on from your Control Center or Lock Screen, but you may want to have a shortcut for your flashlight on your iPhone if you often need to use your flashlight faster. What I like even more than being able to turn my flashlight on with the press of the Action Button, is the convenience of turning it off with the Action Button. I don't know about you, but my flashlight often turns on without me realizing, and this is a much faster way to turn it off without removing it from my bag or pocket.

10. Get Instant Translations when Abroad or Learning a New Language

Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies, but language barriers can make it harder to get around. To speed up your translations, create a Translate Text shortcut. Select this shortcut in the Action Button settings so that you can press the button and jump immediately into translating! I wish I had had this feature on my iPhone when I lived abroad in China; this is one of my favorite iPhone shortcuts ideas.

Other iPhone Action Button Ideas

It was hard putting together a list like this because everyone uses their iPhone differently. There are shortcuts for instantly seeing your iPhone’s hotspot password, making a hidden voice recording voice memo, activating Siri, viewing your Reminders list, getting the temperature of your room, scanning documents, starting a timer, or opening a folder of Shortcuts—I like this last one because it gives you quick access to all your favorite shortcuts instead of just picking one. Then there’s turning your Action Button into a Home button with a Go to Home Screen shortcut, or even use it to quickly remove tracking and reference information from any links you click or share.

If you're like me, the iPhone 15 Action Button is very appealing yet overwhelming. After looking forward to having customizable buttons on my iPhone for months, I am now tempted to leave it as an iPhone mute button to keep things simple. That being said, I love being able to personalize my device, and I hope you found my iPhone shortcuts ideas helpful when it comes to setting up your very own iPhone 15 Action Button. Next, learn how to use the Action Button on the Apple Watch Ultra & Ultra 2.

iOS 17: Voice Message Transcription Not Working

What to Know

* If iOS 17 voice message transcription is not working, it likely means either you or the other person is not running the latest version of iOS.

* The transcription also may not be compatible with your keyboard language.

The latest version of iOS introduced a feature that automatically transcribes audio messages sent through the Messages app. This certainly comes in handy if you’re unable to listen to an audio message, as you can just read what the message says in the form of a text. But what should you do if your iPhone is running iOS 17 and audio message transcription is not working? Read on to find out how to troubleshoot this issue.

Jump To:

* Voice-to-Text Not Working iPhone

* Frequently Asked Questions

Voice-to-Text Not Working iPhone

Audio message transcription happens automatically, as long as your iPhone keyboard is set to a language that supports transcription. Other than that, there is no setting to enable or disable this feature. This makes troubleshooting the problem very easy, as there are only three reasons why this feature would not be working for you. For more iPhone troubleshooting guides like this one, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

1. Audio Transcription Only Works on iOS 17 & Newer

Audio message transcription is a feature that is exclusive to devices running iOS 17 and newer. If your iPhone is not updated to the latest operating system, check for updates.

If you are running iOS 17 and audio message transcription is still not working, this means that the person you are texting is not running the latest software. For this feature to work, both the sender and recipient need to be running iOS 17 or newer. If that is the case, have your friend check for updates on their iPhone instead.

2. Your Keyboard Language Is Not Supported

According to Apple, audio message transcription only works for select languages. Your iPhone will transcribe audio messages according to your keyboard’s language setting. You’ll need to have your keyboard set to a support language. Here’s how to change it:

* Open the Settings app and tap General.

* Tap Keyboard.

* Tap Keyboards.

* Tap Add New Keyboard…

* Search for a new keyboard language by tapping the Search Bar, or tapping a language from the list.

Unfortunately, Apple does not provide a list of supported languages that work with audio message transcription. If voice-to-text is not working on your iPhone with your selected language, you’ll either need to switch to English, or it’ll be a bit of a guessing game for which keyboard language you need to use.

3. The Transcription Failed

The last reason why iOS 17’s audio message transcription is not working could simply be that the software could not understand what was being said in the message and thus could not provide a transcription. If that is the case, you or the sender will need to resend the audio message while speaking louder and/or clearer so that the iPhone can successfully transcribe the audio.

If the iOS 17 audio transcription is not working even after checking all of the above, you may need to contact Apple for further assistance.

FAQ

Why does my iPhone say, “cannot send audio messages at this time”? You can sometimes receive this error message if you have a feature called Sound Recognition enabled. Check out our article on troubleshooting audio messages not working on iPhone for more information.

How to turn on audio messages on iPhone? You can easily send audio messages on iPhone by tapping the plus icon in an iMessage conversation and then selecting Audio.

Funny Emoji Combos & Their Meaning (iOS 17)

What to Know

* Certain strings of emojis, when placed together, imply something specific, although it is often never followed up with an explanation.

* This article will go over popular emojis and what they mean in combination with other emojis for a quick and easy breakdown.

If you've been on the internet recently, you've almost certainly run into a situation where someone uses a long string of emojis to imply something. But what are these emojis and their meaning? We're going to decode a few of the funniest emoji combos to hopefully make the internet a little easier to understand!

Emoji Combos & Their Meaning

While we're all familiar with popular emojis like the thankful emoji, the begging emoji, and the smile emoji, some others you may not be familiar with. If you like learning about Apple devices and software, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day!

Important Note

Apple is constantly updating the emojis on its emoji keyboard. In order to ensure that your emojis are up to date, be sure to download the latest iOS. If you are missing emojis from your iPhone, it may be due to your software needing to be updated. Find out how to update to iOS 17.

* Two Fingers Pointing In: This usually means shy or nervous. Imagine a small child asking for chocolate milk before bedtime.

* Tongue + Eggplant + Water drops: This is a fairly common string of emojis, and be warned! It implies mature, adult feelings and emotions. This emoji combo is typically used to indicate attraction, particularly to men. If you see this under an image of a male celebrity, it means the commenter thinks he's good-looking (to say the least).

* Eyeball + Mouth + Eyeball: This emoji combo implies a sense of disbelief, the commenter is shocked and stunned at what they have just witnessed.

* Open Mouth Face + Smoke: This emoji duo represents an audible gasp or exhaling of breath.

* Door + Running Person + Smoke: This indicates that the commenter is running for the door. Perhaps there's a cool event happening, and they want to run ou their door to go there, or perhaps they want to leave somewhere as soon as possible. It could be either, depending on the context.

* Contented Face + Painted Nails: This implies that the person is feeling content in a sassy, bold, or cheeky way. It's almost like saying, "I told you so," but without so many words.

FAQ

* What does the Melting Face emoji mean? This emoji is known as the Melting Face emoji. It can be used literally to imply extreme heat, but more than likely, it is being used to describe a strong emotion like embarrassment, frustration, or annoyance.

* What does this emoji mean: Smiling Face with Hearts? This emoji is called the Smiling Face with Hearts emoji. It doesn't need to be taken romantically. Instead, it can be understood that the user is feeling grateful, loved, or loving.

* What does Upside Down Face mean flirting? This emoji, the Upside Down Face, can be used to indicate playfulness, silliness, or embarrassment.

And that's how to interpret some of the most popular emojis and combinations! Do keep in mind that everyone may use emojis slightly differently, and the meanings of each symbol can vary across cultures and languages.

Solved: Instagram App Keeps Crashing on iPhone (iOS 17)

What to Know

* When Instagram keeps crashing on your iPhone, you can try closing the app and reinstalling it.

* If that doesn’t work, double-check your network connection and ensure your iPhone is up to date.

* Lastly, if all else fails, report the problem to Instagram support.

Sometimes, you just want to sit back and scroll through Instagram. But what should you do when the Instagram app keeps crashing on your iPhone? There are a few possible solutions that can help resolve any issues you might be experiencing with Instagram crashing.

Jump To:

* Why Is Instagram Crashing?

* Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is Instagram Crashing?

Apps will usually only crash if something goes wrong with the app’s code. Any time an app is misbehaving, you should always start by restarting the app. If Instagram keeps crashing, swipe up on the Home Bar until the App Switcher opens. Then, simply swipe up on Instagram to close it, and reopen the app. If that doesn’t work, there are a few steps to take to resolve the issue. For more iPhone troubleshooting advice, be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

Check Network Connection to Fix Instagram Crashing

Open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper right edge of your iPhone screen (unless you are using an iPhone with a Home Button, in which case you will want to swipe up from the bottom edge of your display). Once you have the Control Center open, check the upper left corner for your network connection. Make sure that you are connected to Wi-Fi or that you have a strong cellular signal. If your signal is weak, it can cause issues with loading posts or even Instagram crashing.

Restart Your iPhone & Check for Updates

If you continue to experience problems with Instagram crashing, try restarting your iPhone and check to make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS. Additionally, check the App Store for any updates to the Instagram app itself.

Reinstall Instagram to Resolve Crashes

If everything is up-to-date, the next best trick is to try uninstalling and reinstalling Instagram. You can simply delete the app from your iPhone and then find it again on the App Store to download it back to your device. Once the app is downloaded, check to see if Instagram keeps crashing.

Contact Instagram Support to Report Instagram Crashing

If all else fails and Instagram keeps crashing on your iPhone, the best thing you can do is report the problem to Instagram:

* Open the Instagram app.

* Tap your profile icon in the lower right corner.

* Tap the hamubrger menu icon (looks like three horizontal lines).

* Tap Settings and privacy.

* Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Help.

* Tap Report a Problem.

* If you receive a prompt to go back to where you saw the problem and shake your phone, simply tap Report problem without shaking.

* Tap Include and continue.

* Type out an explanation of what is happening (such as, “App keeps crashing,” or describe what happens when the app crashes), and then tap Send.

* You can also tap Screenshot to attach a screenshot of the problem (if applicable).

Once you’ve reported the issue to Instagram, there isn’t much else to do but wait for an update that might fix whatever issues you are experiencing.

FAQ

* Why isn't my Instagram working? If Instagram is not working, it could be an issue with your network connection or an issue on Instagram’s end. For example, if Instagram’s servers are down, you won’t be able to load anything in the app. You can check the status of Instagram servers with sites like Down Detector.

* How do I fix an app that keeps closing on my iPhone? If other apps besides Instagram keep crashing on your iPhone, it might be a storage issue. Check that you have enough iPhone storage and delete any apps that you don’t use. As always, check to make sure your iPhone is running the latest software.

Buyer's Guide 2023: Headphones

If you're an audiophile who appreciates high-quality sound from your headphones, look no further for the best headphones and earbuds to buy this year. We've looked at a lot of different pairs, and these were our top  picks for headphones and earbuds in 2023.

Audio Technica ATH-M20xBT ($79)

For a more budget friendly experience, try the ATH-M20xBT from Audio Technica. These lightweight and stylish over-ears have noticeably less audio substance than the premium options, but they’re still solid for long sessions at a comfort level and sound quality no in-ear can match. With active noise cancellation, Bluetooth multi-connect for multiple devices, and a wired connection for better audio, these are a mobile-focused reimagining of the legendary ATH-M20x studio monitor headphones that every sound technician starts out with. They sport the same classic style, along with ultra-reliable sound.

Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Generation ($249)

These are the standard against which all other true wireless headphones must be measured (and usually fall short). While the listening experience of regular AirPods is only middling, the AirPods Pro offer a completely acceptable sound reproduction. Apple’s AirPlay wireless connection, which AirPods use instead of Bluetooth, is the real treat of the AirPods, since it lets you seamlessly switch between Apple devices without pressing any buttons—an almost magical experience. The 2nd Generation now offer a USB-C charging port and a ruggedization rating of IP54, which means resistance to dust, sweat, and water.

Bowers & Wilkins Px8 ($699)

The price tag is premium, and premium is what you get: from materials to build quality to incredible sound. The controls can all be identified by touch, with no confusing gestures or esoteric button-press sequences to memorize. They just work, and they sound like seven-hundred bucks for all 30 hours of battery life. My one complaint is the size of the ear cups—they’re somewhat smaller than competitors and may not fit everyone. If you want to turn up your music and lose track of time and space in a beautiful flawless sound escape, I’ve never tested better.

Jabra Elite 8 Active ($199.99)

These are the best earbuds I’ve tested for workouts. They’re ruggedized to resist sweat and rain with an IP68 dust and water rating, which means they’re considered dust protected (better than resistance) and fully waterproof for submersion including swimming activities. The Elite 8 Active also do an unusually good job of staying in my ears (your mileage may vary), though I wouldn’t test this with something like water skiing. The sound reproduction on these buds is a little tinny compared to the more expensive AirPods Pro 2nd Gen, but they do an acceptable job for your jogging podcast or pump-up playlist.

Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless ($379.95)

These headphones offer a variety of advanced features at a reasonable price, including head-tracking surround sound (through their app), as well as extraordinary sound reproduction for up to 60 hours of battery life. It offers impressive active noise cancellation as well. The build quality feels lightweight when set beside the Bower & Wilkins Px8, but they’re sturdy compared to other premium models such as the Sony series. The Momentum 4 Wireless slightly outperformed the Px8 in isolating my voice during phone calls. These are top-notch headphones for audio enthusiasts.

Buyer's Guide 2023: Smart Home Gear

Having a smart home is no longer a thing of science fiction. From lighting accessories to smart thermostats, check out iPhone Life's choices for the best smart home tech of 2023 and bring your home into the future.

Smart Home 101

Before we get started, it's important to go over some of the basics concerning smart home gear.

* Look for HomeKit-compatible products: Apple built HomeKit to let you control smart home gear through the Home app on your iPhone. This lets you access everything in one place and with Siri, too. You can also create powerful automations within the Home app. For example, you can say “Siri, goodnight” to turn off your lights, lock your door, turn on your humidifier, and turn up your heat. Buy HomeKit-compatible gear for the best experience—you’ll thank me later!

* Always buy from reputable brands: There have been a string of privacy controversies with smart home products—especially security cameras, from company employees accessing the camera to police watching the footage without a warrant. Make sure to research the brand before buying a smart home product.

* Be prepared for issues: I have used smart home products for years, and I still regularly find setup confusing. Allow plenty of time when setting up a new product.

Arlo Video Doorbell 2K ($129.99)

Video doorbells can sound like a novelty product, but I’ve found them to be incredibly useful. You can see who’s at the door and talk to visitors when you’re in the other room or away from home. Video doorbells also provide the peace of mind of having a security camera (complete with stored recordings) to protect you from intruders. When it comes to security cameras, it’s important to use a reputable company, and Arlo has an excellent reputation. The Arlo Video Doorbell is HomeKit compatible, has a wide field of view, and high-quality video—even at night. The app uses AI to distinguish between people and pets and can even recognize packages.

Belkin Wemo Smart Plug ($39)

I love smart home products, but they have the unfortunate tendency of being both expensive and complicated to install. That makes a smart plug a great start. They are inexpensive, easy to install, and incredibly useful. I’ve used Belkin Wemo smart plugs for years. They are HomeKit compatible, have a very slim profile, and are easy to set up. I’ve found a ton of uses for them over the years. I have one Wemo connected to the humidifier in the bedroom so that it automatically turns on in the evenings. I use a smart plug for my Christmas tree each year so that the lights automatically turn on in the evening, but then turn off at bedtime to avoid a fire hazard.

Nanoleaf Elements ($249.99)

Some of Nanoleaf’s wall lights are a little too futuristic for my tastes, but Elements come across as sophisticated. Nanoleaf has a wide selection of HomeKit-compatible smart light solutions ranging from lightbulbs to modular wall displays. These connected hexagonal panels have a wooden veneer surface and a soft backlit glow that can respond to music, your touch, or another customized you can program in the app. They are easy to set up and you can arrange the hexagons in any pattern you like.

Philips Starter Kit: 2 E26 Smart Bulbs (60 W) + Dimmer Switch ($159.99)

I’ve tested most of the major smart light brands and Hue is by for my favorite. I love how the lights automatically turn off when you leave the house and turn on when you come home. Plus, it’s very satisfying to instruct Siri to turn off all the lights in the house as your head hits the pillow. I’ve found Hue lights to work very reliably. The colored lights have a nicer glow than other brands and if you have multiple color lights, the app has excellent scenes for setting a color palate across your house.

Yale Assure Lock 2 (from $159.99)

It is so great having the peace of mind knowing your door is always locked while also having the convenience of the door automatically unlocking when you arrive home. Smart locks are also a game changer for visitors. It’s great to be able to give access to cleaners or a dog sitter on a set schedule. I’ve used Yale Locks for years and have found them to work reliably

with an easy-to-use app. I love the addition of a keypad so that I can give access to visitors without requiring them to download an app. I strongly recommend getting the Wi-Fi model so you can control your lock remotely. I also recommend getting the version with a key so that you can get in manually in case the battery-powered auto-unlock fails.

ECOVACS: DEEBOT T20 OMNI ($1,089)

When smart vacuums first came out, I was really excited by the promise of never having to vacuum again. Unfortunately, my smart vacuum constantly got stuck under the couch or tangled up in cables. The whole thing was such a hassle, I found it was easier just to vacuum the old-fashioned way. If this was your experience, I’m happy to say that smart vacuums have come a long way. The DEEEBOt T20 OMNI not only vacuums, it also mops with hot water. It uses advanced mapping technology to avoid obstacles such as rugs and furniture. Unfortunately, with smart vacuums you get what you pay for; the DEEBOT is not cheap, but if you have pets or young children it can be a total game changer!

Arlo Pro 5S 2K Wireless Security Camera ($249.99)

Security cameras can be an excellent companion to a video doorbell for areas of the house that a video doorbell doesn’t cover. It’s helpful to have the video doorbell and security camera to be from the same company so you can manage all the recordings and notifications in one app. As previous mentioned, Arlo is HomeKit compatible and has an excellent reputation for security. The Pro 5S 2K has both a wide field of view and 12x zoom. The AI will automatically zoom in on points of interest as it’s recording. It is battery powered so it doesn’t require any wiring and is easy to install. My favorite feature is its excellent night vision plus a built-in spotlight.

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium ($249.99)

Ecobee lets you use your iPhone to control your thermostat. It’s HomeKit compatible so you can also use Siri or build automations. In addition, Ecobee uses motion sensors and AI to learn your behavior to keep your house a comfortable temperature while saving you money. The premium model comes with a room sensor so you can measure the temperature in multiple locations of your house. I have the sensor in my bedroom so it uses my bedroom temperature while I sleep and the living room temperature during the day. Ecobee comes packed with additional features, such the ability to respond to Siri requests and measure air quality.

Buyer's Guide 2023: iPad Gear

If you're a fan of the iPad then you must check out our picks for the best gear of 2023! From stands to keyboards, here are the top iPad tech and accessories to take your iPad to the next level!

Penoval Magnetic Paperlike iPad Screen Protector ($19.99)

Do you love to sketch and take handwritten notes on your iPad but sometimes get nostalgic for the feel

of paper? This durable screen cover accurately mimics the feel of doodling on paper while still picking up the slightest stylus marks. Everything about this screen protector is thoughtfully designed, from the magnetic edges for effortless attaching and detaching, to the anti-glare coating that reduces eye strain. The sandblasted finish is one of my biggest reasons for recommending this screen protector. A common complaint is that over time, they wear out the tips of your stylus, but the sandblasted surface works to avoid that.

Adonit Note+ 2 ($69.99)

I’m picky about my writing tools, and styluses are no exception. If you’re looking for an effective and inexpensive option, the Note+ 2 stylus is half the cost of an Apple pencil while providing the instant feedback, pressure sensitivity, and easy Bluetooth pairing I expect in a high-quality stylus. As a bonus, this stylus comes with two programmable shortcut buttons, allowing you to quickly perform common actions in note-taking and drawing apps. I love that it comes with three replaceable tips that cater to different preferences and artistic styles, allowing you to select the tip that fits your needs.

ZUGU iPad Case ($49.99)*

After hearing several rave reviews about these cases, I decided to test one. This versatile case has become my latest tech obsession and is quite simply “the one case to rule them all.” This well-designed tablet case has an enclosed protective spot for your Apple Pencil that wirelessly charges your stylus and features an adjustable kickstand that can sit upright at the perfect viewing angle. My favorite part is that it’s magnetic, so I can easily attach it to my refrigerator and reference recipes while I’m cooking. Fun fact: ZUGU is so confident in their case’s protective ability that if your iPad breaks from an impact, they cover the AppleCare costs to repair it.

Apple Smart Keyboard Folio for iPad ($199)

After testing third-party iPad keyboards, I return again and again to Apple’s folio keyboard as my tried-and-true favorite. This case is protective without being bulky and has a magnetic back so your iPad clicks into place. When you attach the magnetic backing, it automatically connects to your iPad and charges the case (which uses minimal battery). You never have to worry about pairing the keyboard or separately charging your keyboard case, and the keyboard is always on and ready to use. The keys have a pleasant tactile sensation and are nicely spaced apart, allowing me to type quickly and accurately.

Otterbox EasyGrabTablet Case for Kids ($59.95)

I’m consistently impressed with the quality of Otterbox cases, and their colorful tablet case designed for kids is no exception. This antimicrobial tablet case is thicker and more protective than most, with raised edges to help small children easily hold the iPad while fully protecting the camera and screen. My favorite part of this fun case design is that it comes with a small plastic attachment that you can slip onto car headrest posts for an easy-to-view screen to help keep your child entertained on long drives.

Why Does My Apple Watch Keep Locking While I’m Wearing It (watchOS 10)

Things to Know

* If your Apple Watch keeps locking while you wear it, you might need to tighten your watch band.

* If your watch band isn't the problem, we'll go over other reasons why your Apple Watch keeps locking and the easy ways to fix them.

If your Apple Watch keeps locking while you’re wearing it, you may be wearing your watch band too loosely. Fortunately, a locked Apple Watch still tracks your steps, heart rate, and activities. However, I’ll teach you ways to prevent your Apple Watch from locking accidentally (or at all) and an automatic way to unlock it, just in case!

Jump To:

* Why Does My Apple Watch Keep Locking While I’m Wearing It?

* Quick Fixes: Apple Watch Keeps Locking On Its Own

* How to Turn Passcode Off on Apple Watch

* FAQ

Why Does My Apple Watch Keep Locking While I’m Wearing It?

If your Apple Watch thinks it has been removed from your wrist, it will lock itself to keep your data safe. A locked Apple Watch can still track your activities, but it can't access your messages, Apple Wallet, or any other sensitive information. Your Apple Watch may lock automatically if the band is loose, if you have a tattoo right under the sensors, and if your Apple Watch gets wet.

To prevent your Apple Watch from locking, you can try fastening your Apple Watch band more tightly. When the sensors lift off your skin, they assume that the watch has been removed. But how tight should an Apple Watch be? For your Apple Watch sensors to be as accurate as possible, your watch should fit comfortably on your wrist. If your watch keeps shifting, it is likely too loose.

Unfortunately for ink lovers, if the skin touching your Apple Watch sensors is tattooed, you may experience various Apple Watch problems. The substances in tattoo ink can interact with the sensors and result in your Apple Watch locking or tracking your activities incorrectly. The only solution is to place your Apple Watch on your other wrist. If that is tattooed as well, you could consider a different fitness tracker, such as the Oura Ring.

Is your Apple Watch locked after getting wet? This is a different type of automatic lock. If you get your Apple Watch wet or enable Sleep mode on your iPhone, your Apple Watch will lock automatically. To unlock Apple Watches that are in Water or Sleep mode, you'll have to press and hold the Home button on the Digital Crown to unlock it. For more Apple Watch tips and tricks, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

Pro Tip

Keep in mind that some Apple Watch bands are more adjustable than others. In addition to making sure your Apple Watch band is the correct size, I recommend switching to an infinitely adjustable band like the Apple Watch Sport Loop or a third-party alternative.

Quick Fixes: Apple Watch Keeps Locking On Its Own

If you want to prevent your Apple Watch from locking on your wrist, you have several options to take.

* Tighten your Apple Watch band or switch to an infinitely adjustable band. A loose Apple Watch will not only lock itself automatically, but it won't offer accurate tracking.

* Enable your Apple Watch to open with your iPhone. This way, if your Apple Watch locks itself, it will unlock automatically if your iPhone is within range and unlocked.

* If you don’t mind taking the risk, you can turn off your Apple Watch passcode.

If you enjoy the feature that lets you unlock your Apple Watch with your iPhone, check out our article on the unlock with Apple Watch feature next.

How to Turn Passcode Off on Apple Watch

Warning

If you turn off your Apple Watch passcode, anyone can access the data on your Apple Watch. Removing your passcode will disable Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, but anyone who picks up your watch will be able to track you and your devices, read your messages, and have access to all your apps and data.

While we don't recommend turning your passcode off for security and privacy purposes, it is possible, and it will prevent your Apple Watch from locking. To do this:

* Open Settings on your Apple Watch.

* Select Passcode.

* Tap Turn Passcode Off.

* Confirm by tapping Turn Off.

That's it! Your Apple Watch won't lock anymore, even if you take it off or lose it. You can always turn the passcode back on at a future time.

Now you know what to do if your Apple Watch keeps locking! We hope our tips helped you fix this annoying problem. Next, learn how to lock Apple Watches manually.

FAQ

* Why is my wrist detection on my Apple Watch not working? If your Wrist Detection is not working, double-check the settings to make sure you didn't accidentally disable it. If it is enabled, try restarting your Apple Watch.

* Why does my Apple Watch keep turning off? First, check that your Apple Watch battery is charged because it could be turning off to preserve the battery. Next, make sure your Apple Watch is running the latest watchOS; it may be turning off in an attempt to update.

Buyer's Guide 2023: Best Speakers

Looking for a new speaker? You're in luck. I've put together this roundup of speakers that I hand picked for their sound quality, compatibility, and ease of use. Find your next Bluetooth or AirPlay speaker below and get ready to fill your room with the best sound.

Sonos Move 2 ($449)

This update to Sonos’s portable smart speaker is an outlier in the field. With Amazon Alexa and Sonos voice control, the Move 2 offers the benefits of a Bluetooth and a smart speaker in one beautiful package. It works with AirPlay 2, allowing for easy multi-room playback from your iPhone. It rests on a charging base when stationary and has a 24-hour battery life. If you can live without Siri, which is only offered in HomePods, the impeccable sound quality and moveability of this speaker make it a better option overall. The rich, heavy bass frequencies plus the portability make this my personal favorite smart speaker in the house.

Marshall Stockwell II ($219.99)

The first thing I noticed about this Bluetooth speaker is the physical bass and treble knobs, which you rarely see these days. These controls give you the freedom to quickly adjust your sound to fit any space. The bass response is exceptional for a speaker of this size, and the audio quality excels even at high volumes. The 20-plus hours of battery life, USB-C charger, and space-efficient design make this a great option for travel. The rustic design harkens back to Marshall’s vintage guitar amps, but don’t let the look deceive you; this speaker is an innovative piece of modern audio design.

Klipsch The Three Plus ($399)

I’ve been a fan of The Three for some time now. This distinct powered speaker not only has great sound quality, but it also has a lot of character. It offers a potent bass response for the size of the speaker, was easy to pair to my iPhone via Bluetooth, and allows me to control the volume from across the room with an included remote. I find the retro design charming and timeless. While the original is no longer available, The Three Plus promises the same benefits for a lower price tag than when I bought its predecessor.

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom ($449.99)

I adore this speaker. With its sleek, modern aesthetic, long battery life, and incredible audio quality, this is my overall favorite Bluetooth speaker. The Hyperboom’s bass response is incredible, and it boasts a 24-hour battery life at moderate volume. I had some minor issues with Bluetooth connectivity at first, but updating the firmware fixed it. I often use this speaker in lieu of a home stereo system for music; it’s loud enough to fill a large room. You can also pair it with another UE speaker in stereo, effectively making for an exceptionally powerful and portable sound system.

Audio Pro Addon C10 ($450)

With its clean aesthetic, ease of setup, and incredible sonic quality, this is one of my favorite Wi-Fi-enabled speakers on the market. The Addon C10 has nearly every conceivable connection port and allows you to broadcast to all other Wi-Fi-enabled speakers in your house. I use this to listen to vinyl across multiple speakers spanning our house. The speaker has impressive bass response for its size with default settings, though the EQ can be dialed in to fit your preference using the Audio Pro app.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin ($799)

This smart speaker is one of a kind. Its unique design houses an impressive array of speakers with plenty of bass response and crisp, clear treble frequencies. It is AirPlay 2 enabled, meaning you can stream music simultaneously to the Zeppelin and any other AirPlay 2-enabled speakers in the house via your iPhone’s Control Center. The B&W Music App made setup a breeze, plus you can connect your favorite streaming service. The sound quality is impressively clear even at loud volumes, and it does get loud! If you like the look, this speaker will make for an impressive addition to any smart home sound system.

Kanto TUK Powered Speakers ($799.99)

This eye-catching pair of bookshelf speakers are not only beautiful to look at—the sound quality matches the build. The installation was simple, and included all of the necessary wiring to connect my MacBook Pro. Switching the source from my laptop to my iPhone was intuitive and quick. The remote control lets you dial in the sound, change the volume, and switch sources from a distance. Everything works exactly as you’d expect without having to read the manual. The sound quality is some of the best I’ve ever heard, with clarity in the high-end and satisfying bass frequencies. These charming speakers exceeded my expectations on many levels and applications. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your home entertainment system or just getting started with high-quality audio, these are certain to provide a good experience.

Creative Sound Blaster Katana SE ($299.99)

This one is a favorite in the household of Managing Editor Amy Spitzfaden-Both. Although it’s marketed as a gaming speaker, the unform sound keeps TV audio at a stable level without huge fluctuations in bass. Both the look and the sound quality are stellar; and although the device is centered, it does a solid job at offering stereo sound. It’s wireless and easy to connect, though if you position it in front of the TV it might block your IR receiver. Whether used for gaming or watching TV, this is a compact, easy-to-use, and affordable option.
