Focus Mode Not Working? Try These 8 Troubleshooting Tips

Focus in iOS 15 lets you customize many different modes to determine when you get notifications and from whom. But what happens when Focus mode doesn't work as intended: letting notifications through, not getting notifications you wanted, not showing notifications when your phone is unlocked. Let's go over what you can do about these common Focus mode issues. Related: How to Retrieve Deleted Text Messages on iPhone Jump To: * Why Am I Getting Notifications on Other Devices? * Why Am I Getting Notifications from Some Apps? * Is the Wrong Focus Mode On? * Why Am I Still Getting Calls from Some People? * Why Am I Getting "Time Sensitive" Notifications? * Why Are Repeated Calls Getting Through? * Why Am I Getting Silenced Notifications on My Lock Screen? * Focus Mode Isn't On When It's Supposed to Be Why Am I Getting Notifications on Other Devices? If you are still getting notifications on other devices when Focus mode is on, you may have turned off Share Across Devices. This setting, when on, makes sure your Focus settings are shared across any Apple devices you've signed into using your Apple ID. To learn more about new iOS 15 features, sign up for our Tip of the Day newsletter. * Open Settings.   * Select Focus.   * Toggle Share Across Devices on. If you don't want Focus mode settings to be shared across all your Apple devices, you can turn this setting off. Why Am I Getting Notifications from Some Apps? When you set up a new Focus mode, your iPhone may suggest apps to "whitelist"—that is, apps that can still send you notifications even when Focus mode is on. If you did not remove those apps at setup or later, they'll still be able to send you notifications. You may have also whitelisted apps when you set up your Focus mode that you no longer want to see notifications for. Here's how to remove apps from your Focus mode whitelist: * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus mode you want to edit.   * Tap Apps under Allowed Notifications.   * To remove an app, tap the app's icon under Allowed Apps.   * To remove all apps, tap Remove All. You may need to repeat this for all Focus modes you're still receiving app notifications in. Is the Wrong Focus Mode On? While having multiple different, customizable Focus modes gives you more flexibility, it can also be a little confusing. If you're getting unexpected notifications, you might want to check to see if you have the right Focus mode on. To check to see if you have the correct Focus mode on: * Swipe from the upper right corner of your screen to open Control Center.   * Tap Focus.   * See which Focus mode is highlighted. If it is not the mode you expected, you can tap another Focus mode to switch.   * To check a Focus mode's settings, tap the more icon to the right of the Focus mode.   * Tap Settings. From there, you can see and customize which notifications are allowed in this Focus mode and add or change automations and other options. Why Am I Still Getting Calls from Some People? If you did not add Allowed People while setting up your Focus mode, you still might have allowed calls from your Favorites. You might not have even noticed you were doing it: Here's how to turn off calls from Favorites in Focus. * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus mode you want to edit.   * Tap People under Allowed Notifications.   * Tap Calls From under Also Allow.   * Tap No One. Why Am I Getting "Time Sensitive" Notifications? If your Focus mode is not working properly because it's still sending you notifications you didn't ask for, you might have allowed Time Sensitive notifications during setup. Time Sensitive notifications are notifications that could impact you directly or need your immediate attention, like when a package gets delivered or there's been suspicious activity on your bank account. Because these notifications are often of critical importance, be cautious about disabling them in Focus mode. Apple has directed developers to be very judicious with what types of notifications they deem time sensitive, so you should not receive low-priority notifications this way. However, developers are able to set which notifications can break through Focus mode as time sensitive, so if you are getting less important notifications while in Focus mode, here's how you can turn Time Sensitive notifications off: * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus you want to edit.   * Tap Apps.   * Toggle Time Sensitive off. Why Are Repeated Calls Getting Through? Similar to how Apple built a way for Time Sensitive notifications to get through Focus mode, it also built a safety valve in case someone needs to contact you in an emergency. If you have this setting enabled, when someone calls you multiple times within three minutes, their call will break through Focus mode. If you have contacts who tend to have a liberal definition of the term "emergency," you can disable this setting as well. * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus mode you want to edit.   * Tap People under Allowed Notifications.   * Tap Calls From under Also Allow.   * Toggle Allow Repeated Calls off. Why Am I Getting Silenced Notifications on My Lock Screen? If you are seeing notifications on your Lock Screen but not hearing your notification sound when your phone is locked and in Focus mode, you may have allowed Show On Lock Screen in your Focus mode settings. * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus mode you want to edit.   * Tap Lock Screen.   * Toggle off Show On Lock Screen under Silenced Notifications. Focus Mode Isn't On When It's Supposed to Be * Open Settings and select Focus.   * Select the Focus mode you want to edit.   * Under Turn on Automatically, you'll see every automation you've added to this Focus mode. If you'd like to change the schedule, location, or app that activates this Focus mode, tap the automation and make any changes you want.   * Make sure the automation is toggled to on. I hope that this guide has helped fix the issues you were having with Focus mode. If you are experiencing other Focus mode problems, you may need to restart or reset your iPhone or contact Apple Support for more guidance. If you have a Focus mode issue you don't see here, let us know about it in the comments. Everything Announced at the September 2021 'California Streaming' Apple Event

Apple's fall 2021 event, called "California Streaming," opened with a video montage that seemed designed to sell the audience on how beautiful California is. The montage then concluded with Tim Cook stepping onto a stage at Apple Park in Cupertino. Perhaps this is Tim Cook's way of trying to persuade remote Apple employees reluctant to give up working from home that it's time to return to the office? From there, Cook and the Apple team introduced a lineup of new products including the iPhone 13 lineup consisting of four new models, a ninth-generation iPad and sixth-generation iPad mini, and the Apple Watch Series 7 (but no Apple Watch SE update). Notably, no new AirPods were announced. While some of the new iPhone camera features are pretty exciting (Cinematic Mode, anyone?), there were no big surprises during the event. But even so, shiny new iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches are always exciting. Here's everything you should know about Apple's latest devices. Related: iOS 15 Update for iPhone: Availability, New Features & Major Delays iPhone 13: Price, Availability, Cinematic Mode, Better Battery Life Availability * Pre-order: September 17 * Available in stores: September 24 Price * iPhone 13 mini: Starts at $ 699 * iPhone 13: Starts at $799 * iPhone 13 Pro: Starts at $999 * iPhone 13 Pro Max: Starts at $1099 Apple unveiled the new iPhone 13 line, including the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini feature redesigned aluminum frames in a choice of starlight, midnight, blue, pink, and (PRODUCT)RED and feature 5.4 and 6.1-inch displays, respectively. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue with 6.1 and 6.7-inch displays. All four new iPhones take a leap forward with the new A15 Bionic chip, longer battery life, larger storage capacity options, and improved 5G performance. Camera advancements are the highlight of this year's iPhone offerings, and include Cinematic Mode for all four models, a video recording feature that lets you switch focus back and forth between subjects while recording or after during editing. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini feature an enhanced dual-camera system and Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 4K at 60fps, an improvement over the 4K at 30fps offered by the iPhone 12 and 12 mini. The 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max feature new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras that, coupled with the new A15 chip, improve image stabilization, zooming capabilities, and low-light photography, and make macro photography a possibility, a first for the iPhone. Read our full article for all the details about the iPhone 13 family. Apple Watch Series 7: More Screen, Same Band Size, Faster Charging Availability * Pre-order: Later this fall, TBA * Available in stores: Later this fall, TBA Price * Apple Watch Series 7 (GPS): Starts at $399 * Apple Watch Series 7 (GPS + Cellular): Starts at $499 The Apple Watch Series 7 has been redesigned, but not as majorly as some expected. The shape of the new watch is softer, with more rounded corners for a better wrap-around effect. More exciting changes include a much larger screen area and thinner borders, at no cost to watch size or battery life. Plus, the Series 7 can charge fully in just 45 minutes with a USB-C Magnetic Charger. A larger display means that apps can have larger buttons and fit more text so that you can scroll less. This means that Apple Watch Series 7 will offer larger font sizes and even a full keyboard that you can tap or swipe with QuickPath. The Series 7 will be available later this fall in five new aluminum colors: green, blue, red, starlight, and midnight. With a higher dust resistance and a stronger front crystal, you can enjoy the new colors without worrying as much about damage. The upcoming watchOS 8 update brings even more features to Apple Watch, including improved fitness tracking. Cyclers can now enjoy fall detection, an automatic start and stop, and more accurate e-bike calories. There are also other new stats such as tracking tennis ball speed, golf swing distance, and the number of waves caught surfing. Apple Fitness+ is getting new activities and makes it possible to participate in group workouts.  New iPad 9 & iPad mini 6 Availability * Pre-order: September 14 * Available in stores: September 24. Price * iPad mini (6th generation): Starting at $499 for the Wi-Fi model and $649 for the Wi-Fi + cellular model * iPad (9th generation): Starting at $329 for the Wi-Fi model and $459 for the Wi-Fi +cellular model. Educational pricing begins at $299 Apple announced two new iPad models announced during the event—the iPad (9th Generation) and the iPad Mini (6th Generation). Both of these new offerings on popular lines will cost the same as their predecessors—starting at $329 for the iPad and $499 for the iPad Mini–but feature improved processors. The new iPad uses the A13 Bionic processor and the iPad Mini uses the A15 Bionic, both for faster image processing and more responsive performance. Both improved devices will also feature Center Stage, which lets lets the front and back cameras shift their field of view to track your face when you move around during a video call or video recording—very useful for TikTok and FaAceTime! In another boon to video, the new iPad Mini abandons the old Home button in favor of an edge-to-edge display with no notch, so you can devote the whole mini surface to video or productivity.  When Does iOS 15 Come Out? What about iPadOS 15 & watchOS 8? During the event, Apple announced that iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8 will be available for older devices starting on September 20. New iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches will ship with the latest software already installed. We don’t yet have a set date for the release of macOS Monterey, but if last year is any indication we can expect it to roll out around the same time as the rumored new M1X Macs this October or November. The updates will include exciting new features such as Live Text, a Safari redesign, and Focus modes to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. However, some other highly anticipated features, such as SharePlay, Apple Digital Legacy, Apple Maps for CarPlay, and App Privacy Reports, won't be released until later in the fall. In our full articles on each new Apple software update, we discuss release dates and compatibility, plus new and delayed features for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Everything That Apple Didn't Announce Among the releases of California Streaming, the devices that didn't appear include new MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs, AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro 2. We may have to wait until October or even longer for the new M1X MacBook Pros, which are predicted to increase the minimum screen size available to 14 inches and feature the return of HDMI ports and SD card slots. The MacBook Airs, which may not arrive until 2022, may feature the successor to the M1 chip used in the 2021 Airs and an upgraded webcam. AirPods 3 are expected this year, possibly at a second fall Apple Event, and are speculated to come with shorter stems, silicone tips, and may further mimic AirPods Pro with a compact system-in-package solution. AirPods Pro 2 likely won't arrive until 2022, but leakers predict they will be smaller and feature a more rounded shape that may help with noise cancellation, and they may get a chip upgrade to set them above the upcoming AirPods 3. iOS 15 Safari: How to Get Search Bar Back to the Top & Disable Landscape Tab View

With iOS 15 Safari, the app has a whole new layout which brings many updates to the way you browse in the app. In Safari, the address bar is now located at the bottom of your iPhone screen, and in landscape orientation tabs will now appear in a list across the top. If you find these updates inconvenient and want to revert to the previous iOS 14 Safari layout, we'll show you how! Related: How to Hide Apps on the iPhone & Find Them Later Jump To:  * Move Address Bar to the Top of Safari * Remove the Tab Bar from Safari Landscape View Move Address Bar to the Top of Safari Moving the search bar to the bottom of the screen has been one of the biggest changes to Safari in iOS 15. Luckily, if you don't like this change, you can switch it back! Safari now has two tab modes: Single Tab and Tab Bar. With Single Tab mode, your Apple address bar is displayed at the top of Safari and you must tap the tab icon to switch between tabs. With the Tab Bar mode, your URL address bar is displayed at the bottom, and you can swipe between open Safari tabs. Below, we'll cover how to get the URL bar back to the top of the page in Safari.  How to Move Address Bar to the Top in Safari (Shortcut) Perhaps you find yourself accidentally swiping between tabs or you find it disorienting to have the URL bar at the bottom of your screen. Whatever your reason, this is the fastest way to switch into Single Tab mode and move the search bar to the top of Safari while browsing.  * Open Safari and navigate to a web page.  * Tap the 'aA' icon in the address bar.  * Tap Show Top Address Bar.  Now your Apple search bar will be displayed at the top of the screen. If you ever change your mind and want to revert back to the Tab Bar mode (being able to swipe between tabs is pretty handy!), follow the steps above and tap Show Bottom Tab Bar. How to Place the Website Search Bar at the Top in Settings This is a different method to adjust the same setting shown in the shortcut above. Below, we'll cover how to move your iPhone or iPad search bar to the top in Settings.  * Open the Settings app.  * Tap Safari. * Tap Single Tab.  Remove the Tab Bar from Safari Landscape View The landscape tab bar in Safari displays open tabs across the top of your screen and allows you to tap and switch between them, much the same way you would on your laptop. This is a handy update, as it means you no longer have to tap the Tab icon to switch tabs while browsing in landscape view. However, if you feel the landscape tab bar is crowding your screen and cramping your style, you can disable this feature:  * Open the Settings app.  * Tap Safari. * Tap the toggle next to Landscape Tab Bar to disable it.  That's all there is to it! Once you've adjusted these iOS 15 Safari settings, you'll be back to the previous browsing layout you know and love. Kindle iPhone Reading 101: How to Download Purchased Books (iOS 15)

The great thing about your Kindle purchases is that you can read the e-books you've bought on your other devices. Can you read Kindle books on iPad? Yes! You can also read them on your iPhone, Mac, and other devices if you have already purchased them via Amazon or Kindle. We will teach you how to download kindle books on your Apple devices. Jump To: * How to Download Books on iPad & iPhone * How to Download a Kindle Book from Family Library * How to Use Kindle Cloud Reader Downloads * How to Fix Any Kindle Book Not Downloading Issues How to Download Books on iPad & iPhone You can download and read Kindle books on your iPad and iPhone using the Amazon Kindle app. Although you cannot purchase e-books through this app, you can download books that you have already purchased. If you are hoping to learn how to buy Kindle books on iPhone, read this instead. The following screenshots are from an iPhone, but the same steps can be used to download one of your Amazon Kindle purchases on your iPad as well: * Open the Kindle app on your iPhone. If you don't have it yet, download it from the App Store.   * Sign in using your Amazon account email and password.   * Tap Library.   * Tap the book you want to download.   * Once it is downloaded, tap it again to begin reading on your iPhone or iPad! Pro Tip: If you have any free books through Kindle Unlimited, you can still find them in your Kindle Library. You can download them to your iPhone or iPad just like you would a purchased Kindle book. To learn more iPhone tips, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Return to top How to Download a Kindle Book from Family Library If you have an Amazon Family Library set up, you may be sharing books with your family and friends. A Family Library lets two adults and up to four children share all of their content, which means that you are able to download books that someone else purchased. To do this: * Go to Manage Your Content and Devices in your Amazon account. If you have trouble finding it, just click the hyperlink. * Log in to your Amazon account if you aren't already.   * Tap Content.   * Find the book you’d like to send to another device or person.   * Tap Deliver or Remove from Device.   * Check the box next to the device you want to send it to.   * Tap Make Changes. You can learn more about sharing Kindle books with family and friends here. Return to top How to Use Kindle Cloud Reader Downloads Many people ask, “Can I read a Kindle book on my computer?” The answer is yes! You can use Kindle Cloud Reader to download books from your Kindle Library on a Mac or a PC computer. Simply go to https://read.amazon.com, login, and find your book to begin reading.  Unfortunately, the Kindle Cloud Reader only works on devices that don’t have the option to install the Kindle app. This means that you can’t use it to read Kindle books on your iPhone or iPad. Return to top How to Fix Any Kindle Book Not Downloading Issues The most common reason for a Kindle book download issue is a temporary glitch or a bad internet connection. There are a few easy troubleshooting steps that you can try: * Restart the device that you are trying to read the book on.  * Open your Wi-Fi settings and disconnect from the Wi-Fi. Now that Apple has gone wireless, Matias has stepped in with the wired keyboard that Apple should have made. If you prefer a wired option, you’re going to love the Matias Wired Aluminum Keyboard, modeled after Apple’s iconic aluminum keyboards. And, because it’s wired, you never have to worry about running out of power while you type. The Wired Aluminum Keyboard mimics the smooth precision of Apple’s vintage keyboard. Matias includes two USB ports to connect your mouse, flash drive, or other devices through the keyboard. You also get a full numeric pad and Mac-friendly function keys, so your shortcuts stay the same. Matias even added a volume dial, giving you precise control of your sound. Matias has beautifully picked up where Apple left off with the wired aluminum keyboard. Get plugged back in and never worry about battery life again with this classic design, only from Matias.
