Apple TV VPN: Everything You Need to Know

What to Know

* There are many Apple TV VPN options, and every option has pros and cons.

* To get the VPN on your Apple TV, all you need to do is download the app on your Apple TV or set it up on your Wi-Fi router.

When it comes to getting a VPN for Apple TV, there are many factors to consider, such as cost, compatibility with your favorite streaming services, and the location and number of VPN servers in your area. We’ll give you a list of popular VPN Apple TV options and teach you how to set them up on your device.

Jump To:

* How to Pick the Right Apple TV VPN

* How to Set Up VPN on Apple TV

* FAQ

How to Pick the Right Apple TV VPN

The main reason you would want a VPN for your Apple TV is either for extra privacy or to watch shows that are not available in your region/country. So, it is important to consider if the country you want to watch shows in has VPN servers there and if it's compatible with your streaming platforms. The best Apple TV VPN for you will be affordable and have a compatible app for Apple TV or the ability to set it up directly on your home router.

The five most popular VPNs to use with Apple TV are NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish, and ExpressVPN. Below, you can find some information about each one. All of these are paid, and while there are free VPNs, they are usually very limited and often have ads to make a profit. If you are considering a VPN, I recommend trying one of the four below, especially since they all offer money-back guarantees if they don't live up to your expectations.

NordVPN for Apple TV (Starting at $3.09/Month)

NordVPN is widely known as one of the best and fastest VPNs, with servers in 111 countries, and it is Apple TV-compatible. NordVPN offers different security packages, ranging from $3.09/month for the Basic plan as long as you pay for two years upfront up to $15.99/month for the Ultimate plan if you want to pay month-by-month. All plans let you use NordVPN on up to 10 devices but with access to only six simultaneous connections and have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Basic plan only covers a secure, high-speed VPN, while the Plus plan has additional malware protection, tracker and ad blocker, cross-platform password manager, and data Breach Scanner. Then there's the Ultimate plan, which has an additional 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage and two cyber protection benefits: identity theft recovery of $1 million in coverage and cyber extortion protection of $100,000 in coverage.

Surfshark Apple TV VPN (Starting at $2.29/Month)

Surfshark is similar to NordVPN but is slightly cheaper and has different features. Just like with NordVPN, there are three plans, Surfshark Starter, Surfshark One, and Surfshark One+, that can be paid for monthly, annually, or every two years (cheapest). The Shurfshark One+ plan offers everything from a secure VPN to an ad blocker, cookie pop-up blocker, personal detail generator, masked email generator, and real-time email, credit card, and ID breach alerts.

Other Surfshark VPN features include personal data security reports, a private search engine, 24/7 antivirus protection, webcam protection, and antivirus, anti-spyware, and malware protection. Finally, Surfshark One+ can also remove your data from company databases and from people's search sites. Of course, it is Apple TV compatible and has servers in 100 countries.

IPVanish VPN for Apple TV (Starting at $2.99/Month)

IPVanish VPN has servers in over 90 countries and has just one plan that you can pay for monthly, annually, or every two years, and all options let you connect to an unlimited number of devices in your household. This VPN also offers 24/7 live chat and phone support in case you have any questions or something isn't working as it should. IPVanish offers both a VPN and a proxy server so that you can enjoy extra privacy.

ExpressVPN Apple TV (Starting at $6.67/Month)

ExpressVPN is one of the pricier VPN options out there, and it is popular due to its flexibility and compatibility. It works on every platform, gaming console, and router. It has servers in 105 countries, offers 24/7 live chat support with real humans, can be used on up to eight devices at a time, and lets you do VPN split tunneling. VPN split tunneling means that some traffic is routed through the VPN while other traffic accesses the internet normally. This is really useful if you want to use the same device to browse the internet normally while simultaneously streaming a movie in another country. For more Apple TV tips, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Set Up VPN on Apple TV

The exact steps of setting up a VPN on your Apple TV depend on the VPN you pick, but they are generally very similar. First, you have to sign up and either pay for the VPN or start your free trial, which requires setting up your VPN account. Once that is done:

* Turn on your Apple TV and navigate to your App Store.

* Search for your VPN app and download it.

* Open the app and follow the on-screen directions to link the app with your VPN account.

That’s it! It may take some time to tweak your VPN settings to get them right. Another option is to set up the VPN directly with your home Wi-Fi router, which is a little more time-consuming but makes it possible for anyone connected to your Wi-Fi to use your VPN. Just keep in mind that some VPNs have device limits.

FAQ

* How do I add Apple TV apps? You can add apps on your Apple TV the same way you would on your iPhone or other Apple devices, via the App Store.

* What are the best Apple TV apps? Picking the best Apple TV apps is subjective because it depends on your watching preferences. However, some apps, such as Netflix, have excellent app support for Apple TV than others and run smoother than other apps.

How to Resize an Image on iPhone

What to Know

* You can lower image quality on your iPhone using the Shortcuts app or using third-party apps to reduce image size in KB/MB.

* Photos can also be resized by cropping it freehand or using pre-set iPhone aspect ratios.

* Finally, your Messages app can be set to reduce the size of images sent.

Learn how to make a picture smaller or bigger or change its aspect ratio on your iPhone using native and third-party apps. We'll teach you how to use the Shortcuts app to manually resize photos, the Photos app to crop photos, and the Messages app settings to automatically send lower-quality photos.

Jump To:

* How to Make Picture File Size Smaller in the Messages App

* FAQ

How to Resize Photos on iPhone Using the Shortcuts App

While the Shortcuts app can seem intimidating, it is really easy to create a custom shortcut to resize your photos. Better yet, the shortcut can be added to your Share sheet so that you can resize photos directly from your Photos app. Here’s how to downsize pictures on iPhone:

* Open the Shortcuts app.

* Navigate to the Shortcuts tab if you're not already there, and tap the plus icon in the top right corner.

* Tap Add Action.

* Tap on the search tab at the top and type “resize.”

* Select Resize Image.

* Here you can customize the shortcut if you wish. I recommend trying it the way it is first and looking into customizing it later. Next, tap the i icon at the bottom of your screen.

* Toggle on Show in Share Sheet, then tap Done. Tap Done again to save the shortcut.

* Now, you can test resizing a photo by navigating to a photo in the Photos app and opening a photo you wish to resize. Tap the Share icon.

* Scroll down and tap Resize Image.

Your resized image will be saved in your Recents photos album in the Photos app. You can tap the i icon to see the new size. Below is the resized image compared to the original.

Note

If you wish to customize the shortcut in step 6, first, you can tap 640 and change it to another number of pixels based on the width you want your images to be. The image height will be automatically adjusted to keep the ratio the same. If you tap on Size you can select Percentage and change the image size based on a percentage rather than a number of pixels. You can also add additional steps, such as cropping your image to a certain aspect ratio, automatically saving it in a specific folder, etc.

With the Shortcuts app, almost anything is possible! To learn more about the Shortcuts app and other iPhone tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Crop Photos on iPhone: Aspect Ratios & Freehand

Another popular way to resize an image is to crop your photo in your Photos app. Unless you are cropping it significantly, the total size of the image will not get much smaller. You can crop it freehand or use the preset ratios, including a perfect square. If you use third-party apps to crop your images, such as Round Photo (Free), which can crop photos in a round shape, you can export the cropped image to a certain size in pixels, millimeters, centimeters, or inches. Next, learn how to convert PNG to JPEG or HEIC to JPG on your iPhone.

How to Make Picture File Size Smaller in the Messages App

In the past, it was possible to pick a size for any images you were sharing via the Messages or Mail app. While this is no longer possible, you can change your Messages app settings to automatically send smaller-sized images. Keep in mind that these images might not be good enough to print out or use in certain situations, so you might not want this to happen automatically. Here's how to make a picture smaller in texts automatically:

* Open Settings.

* Tap Messages.

* Scroll all the way down and toggle on Low Quality Image Mode.

Now you know how to reduce photo file size on iPhones automatically when sending text messages.

I have now taught you how to change the resolution of a picture on your iPhone using the native Shortcuts app, Photos app, and Messages app. You can also use third-party apps such as Canva (Free), but there are many to pick from, including AI apps that can even increase the resolution of your photo.

FAQ

* How do I edit pictures on iPhone? You can edit pictures on your iPhone using the native Photos app but also third-party apps, including free ones.

* How do I select the aspect ratio before taking a photo? If you have a preferred aspect ratio and don’t want to keep editing all your photos, you can select the aspect ratio before you hit the shutter button by swiping up in photo mode of the Camera app, tap the circle with ratios, and select the one you wish to take the photo in.

* How do I put two pictures side-by-side on iPhone? You can create a collage with two images side-by-side by using the Combine Images shortcut in iPhone’s native Shortcuts app.

How to Use Personal Voice on Your iPhone

What to Know

* Personal Voice is an accessibility tool that allows you to create a computer-generated voice that sounds just like you.

* You can set this up in the Accessibility settings of your iPhone.

* After setting up Personal Voice, you can use it with Live Speech to speak using your iPhone.

Have you ever wanted a computer-generated version of your own voice? The iPhone's Personal Voice feature allows you to do just that. This accessibility option is a great tool for those at risk of losing their voice, but it can be used by anyone. Below, we'll dive into how to create a Personal Voice on your iPhone.

Jump To:

* What Is Personal Voice on iPhone?

* How to Use Personal Voice

* FAQ

What Is Personal Voice on iPhone?

With Personal Voice, you can create a digitized version of your voice that will read all of your Live Speech text. It's a cool feature and does a pretty convincing job, but it is still very obviously a computer-generated voice. Still, it's a neat feature to play around with, and it's a great asset to anyone who might be at risk of losing their voice. By creating a Personal Voice, you can have the iPhone speak for you using your own voice.

This feature differs from your iPhone's text-to-speech in that Personal Voice is meant to be used with Live Speech so that you can use your iPhone to speak for you. The text-to-speech feature simply reads off text that is on your screen.

Note:

Personal Voice can only be used with the Live Speech accessibility feature. You cannot use your Personal Voice as a Siri voice. However, you can have Siri read messages aloud for you.

How to Use Personal Voice

Personal Voice is an accessibility feature that can be set up in the Settings app. Keep in mind that it will take about 15 minutes to set up, and your iPhone will likely need to spend some time processing the audio files of your voice, which can take an entire day. For more hidden iPhone accessibility features and settings, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here's how to set up your iPhone's personal voice:

* Open the Settings app and tap Accessibility.

* Scroll down and tap Personal Voice.

* Tap Create a Personal Voice.

* You'll see on-screen information about Personal Voice, such as how how to get ready to record your voice, and even name your voice. Tap the Continue button on each screen.

* After naming your voice, your iPhone will prompt you to check the sound quality of your environment. Tap the record button and say the phrase displayed on the screen.

* Tap Listen to listen to the recording you just made, or tap Continue to start setting up your Personal Voice.

* You will then be shown 150 randomly selected phrases which you will need to record. Tap the record button to begin.

* Throughout the process, you can tap the pause button to stop a recording.

* You can tap the circular arrow to start over a particular recording.

* If you want to go back to a previous recording, you can tap the skip forward and back buttons to go back or forward through the phrases you've already recorded.

* You can tap the Continuous Recording button to customize how the recording goes.

* Select either Stop at Each Phrase or Continuous Recording. The former will make it so that you have to manually tap the record button on each new phrase, while the latter will automatically start recording once the new phrase pops up.

* You can tap Done at any time to take a break from the recording process.

* If you want to come back later, follow the first two steps, then tap your Personal Voice at the top of the list.

* Then, tap Continue Recording and the process will resume just as in step 7.

* After you finish recording all 150 phrases, tap Continue and make sure to Allow notifications from Personal Voice so that you can be notified when the process is complete.

* You will need to wait several hours while your iPhone processes the recordings. You can check the progress by repeating steps 1, 2, and 14 to access the voice you've created.

* Once your Personal Voice is ready, you will receive a notification.

That’s how to create a Personal Voice on your iPhone. If you want to know how to use your Personal Voice, all you need to do is enable Live Speech. To do this, open the Settings app, tap Accessibility, tap Live Speech, and enable the Live Speech toggle. Then, just triple-click the side button and type in the phrases anytime you want to have text read aloud in your digital Personal Voice. Next, find out how to use voice control on your iPhone to issue commands with your voice.

FAQ

* Why is my Personal Voice not showing up in Live Speech? If your Personal Voice is not showing up in Live Speech, it could be because your device is not compatible. Personal Voice only works on the iPhone 12 and newer. Additionally, you may need to restart your iPhone to get the feature working.

* What is Live Speech on the iPhone? Live Speech is an accessibility feature that allows one to use their iPhone to speak. Simply type what you want to say in the Live Speech box, and your iPhone will speak it aloud with your selected voice. If you set up a Personal Voice, you can even make your iPhone speak with your voice. This feature also works over the phone and on FaceTime calls.

* How do I turn off Voice Over? Voice Over is a feature separate from Personal Voice and Live Speech. If you are having trouble disabling it, our how to turn off Voice Over article should help you.

How to Unlock a Keyboard on Your Mac—the Easy Way!

What to Know

* If your Mac or MacBook keyboard isn't working, it is likely just locked, not broken.

* If you're using a wireless keyboard, it's also possible the keyboard is out of charge or needs to be connected again via Bluetooth.

Unlocking your Mac keyboard is easy, but the steps depend on whether you have a built-in, Bluetooth, or third-party keyboard. It may seem that your Mac keyboard isn't working when it is actually locked. We'll teach you how to unlock the keyboard on your Mac without a hassle!

Jump To:

* How to Unlock a Built-In MacBook Keyboard

* How to Unlock a Wireless Keyboard

* FAQ

How Can I Unlock the Keyboard on My MacBook?

To lock your built-in MacBook or MacBook Pro keyboard, you simply need to turn your device off. This prevents anyone from typing anything on your Mac. However, they can still use the keyboard to turn on your computer as long as it is charged. So technically, the built-in keyboard never fully locks because you can always use a button to turn your Mac on or press any key to wake it if it's sleeping. As soon as you see your password entry screen, your full keyboard should be unlocked. Be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day for more Apple tutorials!

Pro Tip

With most MacBooks, you can easily check if your built-in keyboard is unlocked by pressing the caps lock key and seeing if the LED light on the key lights up. If it does, your keyboard is not locked!

How to Unlock a Keyboard on Mac That’s Wireless

Wireless keyboards are a little different than built-in ones and may be lockable. For example, the Apple Magic Keyboard has a physical switch that locks your keyboard when it is switched off, and unlocks it when it is turned back on again. When the keyboard is switched on and unlocked, the switch exposes a green color. When locked, it shows gray. So to unlock your Apple Magic Keyboard, make sure your Mac is on and Bluetooth is enabled.

* On your wireless keyboard, move the On/Off switch from gray to green.

Image courtesy of Apple.

* After a few seconds, you'll see Keyboard On message pop-up on your screen.

If this doesn't work, plug your keyboard into your Mac to re-pair the device via Bluetooth. This will also charge it, which could be another reason it isn't working. If you have a third-party keyboard, it may have a On/Off slider or switch similar to the Apple Magic Keyboard. Toggle it off and back on to unlock your keyboard. If you have a wired keyboard, you can also unplug the keyboard and plug it back in to reset and unlock it.

FAQ

* Why is my keyboard not working on my iPhone? Your iPhone keyboard can stop working or appearing or start lagging, glitching, randomly typing, or disappearing for various reasons. Troubleshooting steps include resetting your keyboard dictionary, force quitting the misbehaving app, restarting your iPhone, and updating to the latest software.

* Can I use a keyboard with my iPhone? Yes, you can use a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPhone. While you still have to work with the smaller screen, this is a great hack if you wind up temporarily without a computer.

* How can I cut, copy and paste using Mac keyboard shortcuts? You can do press the Command (or cmd) ⌘ key along with letters such as A, C, V, and Z to select all, copy, paste, and undo text on your Mac.

Apple’s Let Loose Event 2024: New iPads & Accessories

What to Know

* Apple announced an unexpected event “Let Loose” happening on May 7 at 7 a.m. PDT.

* We can expect to hear about new iPad models such as the iPad Air and iPad Pro boasting Apple silicon chips.

* It is possible that we will also see a brand new Apple Pencil and maybe even a redesigned Magic Keyboard meant for iPads.

While Apple enthusiasts have been anticipating the annual WWDC keynote, happening June 10, the May 7 Let Loose event announcement has come as a happy surprise. Apple hasn’t provided a lot of information about this event, but because of the event photo featuring an Apple Pencil and the fact that iPads are often announced in the spring, we are expecting new iPads, an Apple Pencil, and maybe other Apple accessories too.

When & Where to Watch Let Loose

You can watch the Let Loose event on May 7 at 7 a.m. PDT on Apple’s website or via the Apple TV app. While we can’t be sure what will be announced, we’re hoping for a new iPad Air 6 with an M-series chip, potentially a new 12.9-inch iPad for those who need a larger screen but don’t have an iPad Pro, and maybe even a new iPad Pro with the M3 chip.

Since the event logo is a hand holding an Apple Pencil, we are also hoping to see a new Apple Pencil and potentially even other accessories. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicts a new Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil, and two new iPads: iPad Pro and iPad Air. Answered: What Is the Flower on iPhone Camera?

What to Know

* The flower icon appears on your iPhone camera when it switches into Macro mode for taking close-up photos.

* You can disable Macro mode by tapping the flower icon.

* If you don't want the flower icon to appear, you can disable it in the Settings app.

If you have a Pro iPhone, you've probably noticed the flower icon appear on your iPhone camera screen while taking photos. This icon should only appear when your camera enters Macro mode for taking close-up photos. Below, we'll cover how to use and disable the Macro mode flower icon.

What Is the Flower on the iPhone Camera?

As you might have guessed, the icon indicates that your iPhone's macro camera is enabled. iPhone macro photography allows you to take clear, extreme close-up shots of nearly any subject. If you don't need to use the iPhone's macro lens, you can easily disable it from the camera by tapping the flower icon.

How to Turn Off iPhone Macro Photography Lens

If you don't have any interest in iPhone macro photography, you can disable the macro lens. For more iPhone photography tips and tricks, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

* When the camera is open, tap the yellow flower icon.

* When it is gray with a slash through it, that means it has been disabled.

That's how to disable the macro photography lens. If you want to disable the icon itself, you can do that as well.

How to Disable Flower Icon in the iPhone Camera

If you don't want the flower icon to show up on your iPhone camera, you can disable that in the Settings app:

* Open the Settings app, and tap Camera.

* Scroll to the bottom and tap the toggle next to Macro Control to disable or enable the flower icon.

Note

This does not disable Macro mode, only the flower icon. You will not be able to turn off Macro mode if you turn off the above toggle.

Next, find out how to use long exposure on iPhone.

FAQ

* What does Macro mode do? Macro mode keeps the image clear while taking extreme close-up shots. This means you can take crisp photos of smaller subjects, like plants or animals.

* Does iPhone 15 have macro photography? The standard iPhone 15 model does not have a Macro mode. However, all Pro models iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, can capture macro photography images.

* Why is my iPhone camera blurry? If your iPhone camera is blurry, it could be because of your Macro Control settings, which you can adjust by following the steps above. However, if it is not the macro lens causing the issue, check out our guide on how to fix iPhone camera quality.

Fixed: iPhone Won’t Let Me Delete Photos

What to Know

* When storage is full, your iPhone sometimes won't let you delete photos.

* If your iPhone won't let you delete photos, you can disable and re-enable iCloud Photos.

* You can also enable the Optimize iPhone Storage option to upload photos to the cloud and delete local copies.

Photos tend to take up the most storage on any phone, so when storage is running low, the first thing you will likely want to do is delete photos. However, you might occasionally run into a bug where your iPhone won't let you delete photos. Let's find out how you can fix this issue and finally clear up some storage.

Jump To:

* Why Won't My Photos Delete?

* How to Fix iPhone Not Deleting Photos

* FAQ

Why Won't My Photos Delete?

When you delete photos on iPhone, the photos are not deleted immediately. Instead, they go into the Recently Deleted folder where they will stay for 30 days before being permanently deleted from the device. This means that when your storage is full and you try to delete photos, your iPhone won't have enough storage to move the photo to the Recently Deleted folder.

If your iPhone storage is full and you can't delete photos, the easiest solution is to try clearing up storage in other areas first. Check out our article on how to free up space on your iPhone to start removing any unnecessary apps and files. For more iPhone storage management advice, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Fix iPhone Not Deleting Photos

If you're wondering, "Why won't my photos delete?", there are a few fixes that can help resolve the issue.

Restart Your iPhone & Check for Updates

When troubleshooting problems with your iPhone, the first step is to turn off your iPhone and turn it back on. Restarting devices can often fix a variety of issues. Of course, it won't fix everything.

The next step is to check for iOS updates on your iPhone to see if a software patch is available which could possibly resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Check iCloud Photos Settings

If your iPhone is not deleting photos, a common fix that some have found is to toggle off iCloud photos. There could be an issue with how your iPhone photo storage is syncing with iCloud photos, and switching it off should allow you to delete the photos from your device without issue.

If you have an iCloud Plus subscription, you can also enable the Optimize iPhone Storage setting. This setting uploads your photos to the cloud and removes the local copy from your device to help save storage.

Clear Recently Deleted Photos

Whenever you delete photos, they will move to the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app. To truly delete the photos, you will need to go into the folder and permanently erase them. Check out our article on how to recover Recently Deleted photos to find out how to access this folder.

These solutions should help resolve any issues with your iPhone not deleting photos. Next, find out how to delete duplicate photos on your iPhone.

FAQ

* Why can't I delete apps on my iPhone? There are some apps that you cannot delete from your iPhone, such as the Settings app or the Messages app. There could also be Screen Time settings preventing you from making changes. Check out our article on what to do when your iPhone won't let you delete apps.

* How do I erase photos from iPhone? Erasing photos from your iPhone is a quick and easy process. All you really need to do is tap the trashcan icon. Head over to our article on how to delete photos from iPhone for more detailed information.

Your iPhone has a taptic engine inside, which is a type of haptic engine that provides the subtle vibrations you feel inside the device. Haptics are used throughout the iPhone experience to make the device feel more tactile and responsive. They have become so commonplace that you might not have ever really paid attention to them.

Haptics differ from normal vibrations in that a haptic engine can adjust the vibration to provide you with different experiences or sensations. For example, when long pressing on an app on your Home Screen, it might feel like you're pressing down on a physical button, or when you unlock your iPhone, it might feel like a lock clicking open.

Should iPhone Haptics Be On or Off?

Having iPhone haptics on or off is all about personal preference. If you find yourself getting annoyed with all of the subtle vibrations you feel when navigating your device, try switching them off. Then, you can decide if that improves your experience or not. You can also enable a haptic feedback keyboard if you want typing to feel more like a physical keyboard.

If you want to disable haptics, you can do so in the Settings app. For more hidden iPhone tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Here’s how to manage haptic feedback on iPhone:

* Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.

* Scroll down to System Sound & Haptics, and tap the System Haptics toggle to turn them off and on.
