Logitech Harmony Express Review: Alexa-based Universal Remote

Harmony Express, Apple Tv, Apple TV, Remote
I have been a customer of Logitech Harmony remotes since the beginning, before Logitech acquired the Harmony Remote Control company, so I am always excited when the company introduces a new model. The latest is the Harmony Express ($249.99) and they kindly sent me a review unit to try. Compared to the traditional models, the Express is much more compact and sleek. And since it's so small, it's nice to know you can use the app to find the remote control. It charges using a microUSB cable (included) and not a cradle as other models do. I would have preferred USB-C or, better yet, Qi-based wireless charging so I could just place the remote on a charging pad.

Related: How to Connect & Set Up Your Apple TV & Apple TV Remote
Apple TV, Remote, Connect
The big difference with this model is that it supports voice-activated control of your home theater devices. Given the Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV remotes that also support Siri and Alexa, respectively, this is overdue. However, you have to touch the button to activate voice commands. My preference is to leverage always-on Alexa devices like the Echo Dot, which already integrate with Logitech Harmony hubs, so I can simply say, "Alexa, turn the TV on to channel 356," and so on. The other Harmony remotes use a sophisticated and complex app, but the Express has its own minimalist app with quicker and easier setup. Like other Harmony remotes, it includes an IR blaster for better coverage of devices which may be hidden in a cabinet.
Apple, TV, Remote, Connect

Pros

  • Sleek compact design
  • Voice-activated control of home theater
  • Recharges via microUSB
  • Minimalist app with easy setup
  • Includes IR blaster for better coverage
  • Use app to find remote

Cons

  • Does not use USB-C or Qi wireless charging
  • No screen or keypad may be a drawback for some users
  • Voice activation requires pressing a button

Final Verdict

The Harmony Express might be best suited for streamers who don't need to enter channel numbers and want to use voice control as much as possible.

Review: Bond Bridge Connects Radio-based Home Electronics to Your Smart Home

Apple Smart Home
I try to make my home as smart as possible, and I have Alexa devices and smart lights in just about every room, but one set of appliances has been left out. Until now. The folks at Bond sent me their Bond Bridge ($99) to review. It bridges the gap, no pun intended, between Alexa-type voice assistants and traditional RF-controlled devices like ceiling fans and electric fireplaces. In the future, it should work with air conditioners, window shades and similar devices.

Apple Smart Home
The unit itself has a compact, unobtrusive design, not unlike an Amazon Echo Dot, and a really long (about 10 feet) microUSB cable, so you can place it anywhere you need to. This is important because one Bond Bridge could work for multiple devices as long as it's placed within range. I set up a Bond Bridge in my youngest daughter's bedroom and it was able to control the ceiling fan for her and the one in my other daughter's bedroom. It's not cheap, but if you can spread out the cost over multiple RF devices, it becomes quite reasonable.
Apple Smart Home

Pros

  • Works with RF-based ceiling fans and fireplaces now and more devices in the future
  • Integrates with Alexa using Alexa skill
  • Compact, unobtrusive design
  • Long microUSB cable and A/C adapter included
  • One Bond Bridge can interface with multiple RF devices

Cons

  • Expensive but only one may be needed

Final Verdict

The Bond Bridge brings traditional RF devices into the age of the smart home.

Eve Extend Review: Elgato Aims to Solve Smart Home Connectivity Issues

Eve HomeKit
The Eve HomeKit device product line has grown substantially over the years. As Eve devices continue to proliferate throughout a smart home, they can occasionally have connectivity issues depending on just how far away they are from home base. Since it's in the company's best interest to make sure its products continue to proliferate throughout the home regardless of placement, Elgato has created Eve Extend ($49.95) to solve this situation.

Related: HomeKit Accessories: Eve Energy Strip Review
Eve Extend is powered by a USB-A to micro-USB cable that can attach to any USB charging port or compatible power supply. Once powered, the low profile Extend can connect to your HomeKit-enabled network via the usual HomeKit visual code pairing sequence as other HomeKit devices. Then it's simply a matter of placing the Extend in any area of the home that is having difficulty reaching other Eve devices. The Eve Extend can support up to eight additional devices on its hub, greatly expanding the device capacity of any Eve-powered smart home. I also found it helpful to better organize my collection of Eve devices.
Eve HomeKit
For example, my HomeKit base station (an old iPad) is located up in my bedroom, but I have several Eve devices in my basement.  Occasionally those devices used to lose contact, frequently reporting "Unreachable" in the Eve app. Now that the Eve Extend has been placed closer to those basement devices, the only time I receive Unreachable messages is when the battery powering those devices is fully discharged. I also now have better organized those basement Eve devices under the single Eve Extend umbrella so that if I need to manage their inventory, it's easy since they are all assigned to a single Extend I have labeled "Basement Extend".
Eve HomeKit
While I welcome the ability to confidently extend the range of Eve devices, Elgato missed an opportunity to inexpensively enhance this always-on device with additional on-board Eve sensors. Combining it with an indoor room temperature sensor or motion detector would have elevated its utility beyond just a signal extender. Adding one of these sensors would likely only have increased the cost by another ten dollars while giving Extend more value-added utility.

Pros

  • Extends the reachable range of Eve devices throughout the home.
  • Allows up to eight Eve devices to be managed by a single Extend unit.

Cons

  • No additional home automation capability beyond extending Eve device connectivity range.

Final Verdict

If you have already invested extensively into the Elegato Eve product line and are seeking to better organize and extend your investment, Eve Extend will help you easily achieve that objective.

発売再延期の折りたたみスマホ「Mate X」、デザイン以外にカメラ性能も向上か

Huawei Mate X

Huawei P30 Pro

mate x huawei tenaa

Samsung Launches 240Hz G-Sync Compatible Curved CRG5 Gaming Monitor in Europe at gamescom 2019

Samsung Electronics today announced the European launch of its new CRG5 gaming monitor, the latest of Samsung’s Curved Gaming Monitors, at gamescom 2019. The CRG5, which was first unveiled at E3 2019, delivers a powerful combination of industry-first 240Hz refresh rate with a curved display and NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible to provide the immersive experience that gamers have come to expect.

As the world’s largest gaming event, gamescom is an important stage for Samsung to display its latest gaming technology. The Samsung booth has doubled in size since 2018, measuring larger than an NBA basketball court at 500 square meters. Besides the CRG5, attendees can experience Samsung’s other latest gaming display innovations including the Space Gaming Monitor (SR75Q) and the Super Ultra-wide CRG9 49″.

CRG5: World’s First 240Hz Refresh Rate with Curved Display

The 27-inch CRG5 combines a lightning-fast refresh rate through 240Hz RapidCurve™ technology and 1500R curvature, eliminating lag time while displaying ultra-smooth scenes for a truly immersive experience. The 240Hz refresh rate allows a swift, smooth response to screen transitions and quickly changing situations, while the 1500R curved screen offers a wider view with just one glance.

To eliminate tears, stuttering and any delay in the action, G-sync Compatible from NVIDIA synchronizes the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and panel, offering players exceptionally dynamic and seamless gameplay during any scene in full HD resolution.

“Great gaming PCs deserve fantastic monitors and Samsung’s first NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible monitor, the C27RG5 means a smooth, tear-free, and stunning gaming experience for users with GeForce GTX 10-Series, GeForce GTX 16-Series and GeForce RTX 20-Series graphics cards,” said Vijay Sharma, Product Management Leader for NVIDIA G-SYNC.

An impressive 3000:1 contrast ratio means Samsung’s latest curved gaming monitor delivers deeper blacks and brighter whites, providing superfine detail in the brightest and darkest parts of an image for greater user enjoyment. Samsung’s CRG5 has a curved vertical alignment (VA) panel display tailored to the user’s range of view for increased concentration during critical gameplay moments.

The bezel-less design of Samsung’s CRG5 gives gamers even more screen space, while a strong, sturdy Y-stand and game dashboard-style On Screen Display (OSD) menu enhance any gaming environment. Samsung’s CRG5 also offers a host of optimal gaming modes that make the player experience more comfortable than ever before. Game Mode is an optional setting that automatically and optimally adjusts black gamma levels, contrast, sharpness and color for all types of games. Low input Lag Mode can also minimize delays between a user’s input devices and display, while Virtual Aim both increases and enhances accuracy when playing a first-person shooter. Finally, Eye Saver Mode minimizes the blue light emitted by the display to keep eyes comfortable during extended periods of gaming.

Space Gaming Monitor: Reclaim your Gaming Space

First unveiled at gamescom 2019, the 32″ Space Gaming Monitor (SR75Q) has a super-fast 144Hz refresh rate with AMD Radeon FreeSync. The 144 Hz screen refresh rate minimizes image lag and motion blur, while AMD FreeSync synchronizes the refresh rate of the display and your graphics processor, all resulting in smoother gameplay by eliminating tearing and stutter.

The Space Gaming Monitor will be available in a 32-inch, QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution model, featuring Samsung’s recognized space-saving design that allows users to push the monitor flat against the wall, leaving surfaces free and clear. The Space Gaming Monitor can also be pulled forward easily and adjusted to fit a variety of viewing preferences and positions — including all the way down to surface level, delivering unparalleled flexibility when configuring your optimal gaming environment.

Easily concealable power and HDMI Y-cables prevent tangled cables and ensure any gaming space remains clutter-free. The screen also boasts a three-sided bezel-less design to display as much of the game as possible. The Space Gaming Monitor comes with an integrated clamp that ensures quick and easy installation, allowing it to be attached to any desk or table.

CRG9 49″: The Ultimate Gaming Monitor, Now with Dual QHD Resolution

The CRG9 49″, which won the CES 2019 Best of Innovation Award in the Computer Peripherals Product Category and Honoree in the Gaming Product Category, includes a number of premium features. First, the monitor boasts an HDR 1000 and dual Quad High Definition (QHD) resolution (5,120 x 1,440) – equivalent to placing two 27-inch 16:9 monitors side by side without bezels impeding the view. The CRG9 also delivers one billion colors with 95% DCI-P3 color space to present realistic visuals, while reaching a peak brightness of 1,000 nits for superfine detail in the brightest and darkest parts of an image.

In addition, the CRG9 offers a 120Hz refresh rate that minimizes image lag and motion blur. AMD Radeon FreeSync™ 2 HDR technology reduces stutter, screen tearing and input latency to ensure the best possible gameplay experience. Virtual Aim gives players enhanced accuracy when playing a first-person shooter, while the CRG9’s screen curvature provides gamers with an ultra-wide field of view for a more immersive gaming experience.

Whether they’re finishing a big project for work, capturing and editing a video, or playing their favorite mobile game, the Galaxy Note10 will help them do it faster and better.”

Purposeful Design For a Premium Experience

Galaxy Note users appreciate the power of sophisticated design—not just the look and feel of their device, but the experience it offers. Every element of the Galaxy Note10 is crafted to be sleek, slim and distraction-free, so users can devote their full attention to the ideas, projects, and content that matters most.

  • Two Sizes: For the first time ever, the Galaxy Note10 comes in two sizes, so consumers can find the Note that’s best for them. The Galaxy Note10 opens up the Note to users who want the power of the S Pen and ultimate productivity in a compact form factor, packing a 6.3-inch Cinematic Infinity Display into the most compact Note yet. The Galaxy Note10+ features the biggest Note display ever with a 6.8-inch Cinematic Infinity Display on a device that’s still easy to hold and easy to use.

The Galaxy Note10’s display is Samsung’s best yet. From its physical construction to its underlying technology, the display is designed to immerse users in their favorite TV, movies and games.

  • Edge-to-edge Design: The Galaxy Note10’s edge-to-edge Cinematic Infinity Display is nearly bezel-less, while the in-display cut out for the front camera is small and centered for a balanced design. Samsung’s most immersive display creates a seamless experience between thought and action, viewing and creating.

  • Best Quality Display: The Galaxy Note10 features the award-winning Dynamic AMOLED display. With HDR10+ certification and Dynamic Tone Mapping, photos and videos are brighter than previous Note devices, and feature a stunning, wide color range. UL verified1 the Galaxy Note10 display for its 98% color and brightness uniformity. The Eye Comfort display reduces blue light without affecting color quality for comfortable viewing.2

Multi-Faceted Productivity to Maximize Every Moment

Note users put a premium on productivity, and they see their phone as essential to helping them do and achieve more. For these users, the Galaxy Note10 features new technologies, enhanced capabilities and powerful integrations all in service of giving users the freedom to work in the way that makes them the most productive.

  • Handwriting to Text: The Galaxy Note10 brings a powerful new capability to the re-designed, uni-body S Pen. Now, users can jot down notes, instantly convert their handwriting to digital text in Samsung Notes, and export it to a variety of different formats, including Microsoft Word. Users can now customize notes by shrinking, enlarging, or changing the color of the text. In just a few taps, meeting minutes can be formatted and shared; bursts of inspiration can quickly become editable documents.

  • Evolution of the S Pen: The Galaxy Note10 builds on the Bluetooth Low Energy-enabled S Pen capabilities introduced on the Galaxy Note9 by adding Air actions, allowing you to control certain aspects of the device using gestures with the S Pen. By opening up the Air actions SDK, developers can create customized controls that give users the ability to play games or use their favorite applications using gestures.

  • Samsung DeX for PC:The Galaxy Note10 extends Samsung DeX’s capabilities, making it easier for users to work between their phone and a PC or Mac. With a simple, compatible USB connection, users can drag and drop files between devices, and use their favorite mobile apps with a mouse and a keyboard, while keeping their data secure on their phone through Samsung Knox.

  • Link to Windows: The Galaxy Note10 integrates Link to Windows directly into the Quick Panel. With one click, users can connect to their Windows 10 PC. There, they can see notifications, send and receive messages, and review recent photos without pausing to look down at their phone.

Pro-Grade Camera for Creators

With the Galaxy Note10, content creators and everyday users alike can use state-of-the-art tools to capture stunning video and photos—allowing their channels, stories and posts to stand out and make an impact. Featuring a combination of advanced imaging technology and software, the Galaxy Note10 elevates mobile videography and photography to the next level.

  • Premium Video Technology: The Galaxy Note10 enables users to capture pro-grade video without having to carry around any extra gear. Live focus video adds depth-of-field adjustments so you can blur the background to focus on your subject. Zoom-In Mic amplifies the audio in frame and pushes background noise aside to help focus on the sounds that you want. And to remove the bumps and shakes that usually make an action shot blurry, new and improved Super steady stabilizes footage, and is now available in Hyperlapse mode for steady time-lapse videos.

  • Quick and Easy Video Editing: Once they’ve recorded their video, Galaxy Note10 users can edit-on-the-go instantly right from their phone. Video editor can be used with the S Pen, so instead of having to tap to select or edit a clip, users can choose the precise moment they want to trim. For creators who need even more control over their footage, Adobe Rush4 on the Galaxy Note10 provides a sophisticated suite of editing tools, now even more accurate with the S Pen.

  • Screen Recorder: For gamers who want to add some personality to their streams, or vloggers who want to enhance their tutorials, the Galaxy Note10 introduces Screen recorder. Easily capture what’s on the screen, use picture-in-picture to add reactions, and use the S Pen to annotate as they record for a more entertaining, engaging video.

  • AR Doodle and 3D Scanner: The Galaxy Note10 integrates bleeding-edge AR and 3D capabilities into the camera. Along with an Ultra Wide camera, it opens up an entirely new medium for creators. With AR Doodle, use the S Pen to personalize photos with dynamic drawings, effects, and animations that track to the image. And with 3D Scanner5, a groundbreaking first for the Note, the Galaxy Note10+’s DepthVision camera can take a scan of an object6, and instantly turn it into a movable 3D rendering.

  • Night Mode: People take plenty of selfies in low light situations—at dinner, at concerts or just enjoying a sunset. Night Mode, now available on the front camera, lets users capture striking selfies no matter how dim or dark the conditions.

Unparalleled Performance for Power Users

Note fans use their phones to do just about everything—not just tackling everyday tasks, but taking on big projects: running their business, editing video for their social media channels, creating beautiful illustrations with the S Pen. To help them do it all, the Galaxy Note10 is engineered with top-tier hardware and next-level features.

  • Super Fast Charging: With just 30 minutes of charge, the Galaxy Note10+ lasts through the day7 with up to 45W wired charging capability8.

  • Wireless PowerShare9: Wireless PowerShare comes to the Note. Users can wirelessly recharge their Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds, or another Qi-enabled device with the Galaxy Note10.

  • Gaming: As mobile games get more processing-heavy and graphics-rich, the best gaming experiences require top specs. The Galaxy Note10 features the world’s slimmest vapor chamber cooling system, which delivers optimal performance during gameplay while keeping the device slim and sleek. With the AI-based Game Booster, the Galaxy Note10 optimizes performance and power consumption depending on the game. And with the PlayGalaxy Link P2P streaming service, users can pick up where users left off on any PC game and enable them to continue playing on the move with no need for local storage.

  • Hyper-fast Speeds: With LTE and 5G-ready options, Note10 users can take full advantage of their carriers’ fastest speeds. The Galaxy Note10+ 5G harnesses the full power of the next generation network for streaming high resolution video, downloading content hyper fast, and streaming graphics-heavy games in real time. By allowing us to do everything we love, hyper fast, the Note10+ 5G is changing the way we consume content and connect with friends and family.

Galaxy Note10+ Receives DisplayMate’s Highest-Ever A+ Grade

Galaxy Note10

The results of DisplayMate’s comprehensive tests are in, and the world’s leading evaluator of video screens has concluded that the Galaxy Note10+ establishes a bold new standard for mobile displays – one that’s deserving of the firm’s highest-ever Excellent A+ grade.

As DisplayMate’s President, Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, explained, “The level of display performance and excellence has been increasing each year, and the Galaxy Note10+ has again raised the bar significantly higher.”

According to Soneira, the Galaxy Note10+ possesses “the most innovative and high-performance smartphone display that [DisplayMate has] ever lab tested.” During the evaluation, Samsung’s latest flagship outperformed its predecessor in several key categories, including brightness, reflectance ratio, color accuracy and blue light reduction.

Both the 6.3-inch, Full HD+ (2280×1080) Galaxy Note10 and the 6.8-inch, Quad HD+ (3040×1440) Galaxy Note10+ boast Samsung’s all-new Dynamic AMOLED Infinity-O Display. The smartphones’ immersive screens include a single small, centered camera cutout at the top that allows them to offer users an exceptionally high screen-to-window ratio.

The Galaxy Note10+’s peak brightness score of 1,308 nits is an improvement of 25 percent over the Galaxy Note9 (1,050 nits), while its screen reflectance ratio is the lowest that DisplayMate has ever measured on a smartphone (4.3 percent). The smartphones’ combination of high screen brightness and low screen reflectance allows them to offer better screen readability, picture quality and color accuracy in bright environments, such as when users are outdoors.

The Galaxy Note10+’s 0.4 Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) is an improvement on the Galaxy Note9’s 0.5 JNCD score, and a testament to the device’s color accuracy. Put simply, the closer a display’s JNCD score is to zero, the more accurate its colors are. The Galaxy Note10+’s 0.4 JNCD score indicates that colors depicted on its display are virtually indistinguishable from perfect.

HDR10+ support enables the Galaxy Note10+ to depict high-resolution content, such as 4K UHD videos, as realistically as possible, while Dynamic Tone Mapping technology optimizes colors from scene to scene, ensuring that content is presented exactly as creators intended. During its tests, DisplayMate also found that the Galaxy Note10+ reduced up to 37.5 percent more blue light than the Galaxy Note9 – without compromising color accuracy.

Based on its outstanding performance throughout rigorous testing, it’s easy to see why DisplayMate described the Galaxy Note10+’s screen as “an excellent, top-tier, world-class smartphone display” and described Samsung as a company that “continues to systematically improve OLED displays.”

The Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ will officially launch starting from August 23. To learn more about the smartphones’ immersive displays and other exciting features, be sure to check out our in-depth look at the devices, here.
