How to Transfer Photos from Mac to an External Hard Drive

What To Know

* If your Mac or MacBook's Photos Library takes up too much storage, you can transfer the Photos Library to an external hard drive.

* To transfer your Mac's photos, drag the Photos Library to the hard drive.

* After you transfer the Photos Library, you can delete it on your Mac to save storage.

Backing up your photos is always a good idea, but it can also help save storage space on your Mac. You can move your Mac Photos Library to an external hard drive that's been formatted for a Mac and isn’t being used for Time Machine. Let's learn how to transfer photos from a Mac to an external hard drive.

Jump To:

* How to Safely Move Photos from Mac to External Hard Drive

* Multiple Photos Libraries: How to Pick A Specific Photos Library

* What If There’s an Error Moving the Photos Library?

* FAQ

How to Safely Move Photos from Mac to External Hard Drive

If the videos and photos on your Mac are taking up too much storage, you can transfer photos from a Mac or MacBook to an external hard drive, then delete the Photos Library from your Mac. Before you can move photos from a Mac to an external hard drive, you may need to reformat the drive if it's been used before. Read how to format an external hard drive for your Mac or MacBook if you need a refresher on how to do this.

Note

Your photos cannot be moved to the same external storage device that you use for Time Machine.

After you've reformatted your hard drive, you're ready to move your Mac's Photos Library to the external storage device.

* Connect your external hard drive to your Mac. You may need to Allow the hard drive access to your Mac.

* Make sure it is connected and showing up in your Finder.

* Make sure you've quit the Photos app.

* In the Finder menu, click Go, then click Home.

* Your Photos Library should be in the Pictures folder, inside the Home folder. If you don't see the Pictures folder, follow these steps before proceeding to step 5.

* Drag and drop the Photos Library from Pictures to your external hard drive.

* Once you've done this, double-click Photos Library in the external hard drive to make sure all the contents were moved.

If you use iCloud Photos on your Mac and still want to use it after this move, you'll need to designate the library on the external hard drive as the System Photo Library. If you do this, your Photo Library should sync whenever your designated hard drive is plugged in to your Mac. After you have made the library on your Mac the System Photo Library, you can also delete the photo library on your Mac.

Warning

Be careful deleting your Photos Library, because there is a chance you could permanently delete all your photos. Always triple-check that you have a functional backup before taking any further steps.

Once you have made the photo library on your external hard drive, the System Photo Library, you must make sure your external hard drive is plugged in and available before opening the Photos app on your Mac. If the System Photo Library cannot be found when opening the Photos app, your Mac will create a new, empty photo library.

If you're trying to save storage on your Mac, you can delete the original Photos Library. Drag the library to the Trash, then empty the Trash. For more great video and photo storage tutorials, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

If You Don't See the Pictures Folder

* If you don't see the Pictures folder as an option in the Home folder, open Finder then click on Finder in the Menu bar and click Settings.

* Select the Sidebar tab, then make sure Pictures is checked.

Multiple Photos Libraries: How to Pick A Specific Photos Library

If you have more than one Photos Library on your Mac (which happens automatically once you follow the steps above), you can choose which library to open when you open the Photos app. To select which Photos Library you want to open when the Photos app opens:

* Quit the Photos app. Then press and hold the Option key and reopen the Photos app.

* Click the Photos Library you want to open, then click Choose Library.

You can also double-click directly on either Photos Library—either from your external hard drive or the Pictures folder—to open it using the Photos app.

What If There’s an Error Moving the Photos Library?

If you get a "cannot be moved" error message, don't worry; we should be able to get you back on track. First:

* Open the Finder, click on your external storage device, click File, then click Get Info.

* Click the arrow next to Sharing & Permissions to see all the data, and make sure that the box next to “Ignore ownership on this volume” is checked. If this box is unchecked and there's a lock icon next to it, click the lock icon and enter your password to change the setting.

If there is no Lock icon, you may need to format your external hard drive, or the drive may have been used for Time Machine backups that haven't been erased. If there is another permissions issue with your Photos Library, Apple has a Photos Library repair tool that may help you.

Now you know how to clear storage on your Mac by moving your photos to an external hard drive. Since an external drive is a physical object that can be lost or destroyed, you may want to keep another backup in a cloud-based archive like DropBox, Google Drive, or OneDrive.

FAQ

* How do I format an external drive for MacBook Pro? First, you have to back up any files on your external drive because formatting will delete everything on it. Then follow these steps to erase and format an external drive for Macs.

* How do I delete photos on Mac? Open the Photos app, locate a photo (or video), and right-click using a mouse or press the command key while clicking on the photo, then select Delete Photo.

How to Share Location Indefinitely on iPhone to Android

What to Know

* There is no iPhone feature that lets you share location from iPhone to Android.

* Other apps allow this feature with varying restrictions.

* Google Maps lets you share location from iPhone to Android.

Can you share your location from iPhone to Android? Apple doesn't allow it with any of its native apps, but other apps, such as WhatsApp and Google Maps, let you share your location with other users. If you want to keep an Android user up to date with your movements, here are the best apps to let you share your location from iPhone to Android.

How to Share Location from iPhone to Android

While your iPhone has many handy features to keep your emergency contact up-to-date with anything that could be catastrophic, sometimes you want to let an Android user keep an eye on your movements for an extended period of time, or even indefinitely, whether you don't trust yourself to remember to tell your partner when you're heading home so they know when to expect you or are in a situation where you'd like someone you trust to have eyes on your whereabouts.

Unfortunately, Apple does not allow you to share your location with Android users through its native apps, but many third-party apps do allow this, so you can share with another user of that app. For more great workarounds to get the most out of your Apple devices, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Share Location Indefinitely on iPhone to Android via Google Maps

Google Maps is an easy way to share your location indefinitely from your iPhone to an Android. However, for it to be truly indefinite, you must share the location to an email address. If you share it via Messages to one of your contacts, you will have a maximum of one day until it turns off.

* In your Google Maps app, tap on your location on the screen.

* Tap Share location.

* Tap the clock icon and the listed share time at the top of the menu that appears.

* Tap Until you turn this off.

* Select a suggested contact to share with or tap More for your entire contact list. Select your contact's email address. If you choose a contact with a phone number instead of email, you'll send a link via text that is valid for one day.

* Tap Share.

* You may be prompted to change your location settings for the app. Follow the prompts if you wish.

* To view who you are sharing locations with, tap the Settings icon at the top of the screen.

* When reviewing the contacts you're sharing your location with, you can tap Stop next to one to stop sharing.

* On the main sharing screen, you can tap on a person you're sharing with and then tap Stop to stop sharing your location with them.

Apps That Let You Share Location from iPhone to Android

Other apps also let you share locations with other users. These include but are not limited to:

* WhatsApp

* Snapchat

* Messenger

* Life360

FAQ

* Can iPhone share location with Android? None of Apple's apps let you share your location with Android, but apps such as Google Maps, Snapchat, and Life360 do.

* Does Find My work between iPhone and Android? No, Find My only works between Apple devices.

* What is the Android equivalent of Find My iPhone? Android has a feature called Find My Device which works similarly to Apple's Find My.

All In on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

I’d never enjoyed wearing a watch—I didn’t like how it felt on my wrist. However, the idea of a wearable computer intrigued me, so in 2016 I bought an Apple Watch Series 2. I tried it for a few days and ended up reselling it. In 2019, hearing of the health benefits, I bought the Series 5. That watch met the same fate.

Recently, I decided to go all in and buy the big-screen Apple Watch Ultra 2 and commit to wearing it for two weeks. I chose the large screen, longer battery life, brighter, waterproof, dust-resistant, more expensive Ultra 2 to give the Apple Watch its best chance. The Ultra 2 is targeted for adventurers. At 75 years old, I enjoy hiking and swimming but am probably not the Ultra demographic. While I came to love the new features, everything that follows applies to less expensive versions too. And for more on the Apple Watch, be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

During week one, I tolerated the watch. Week two, I started liking it. By week three, you couldn’t take it away from me. It’s hard to explain the watch’s attraction because it’s not one thing.

In the first week, I got addicted to closing the three activity rings on my watch: move, exercise, and stand. Apple set them up for me based on my age, weight, and height.

During my daily walk in the woods, I used the built-in Workout app to track distance, heartbeat, calories, and speed. In the hike, I inadvertently slid down a bridge ramp. The watch immediately vibrated, checking to see if I fell and needed emergency services. Nice.

In week two, I personalized my watch faces and complications (small icons that link to apps and data), and tried out health features like sleep monitoring, ECG, heart rate, and blood oxygen.

By week three, I was using my watch to dictate my text replies with remarkable accuracy, answer the phone, and access a myriad of information.

Just by checking my watch face, I can see the time, date, next appointment, temperature, activity rings, steps taken, distance walked, sunset time, and the price of a stock I track. Pedometer++ (free) tracks steps and distance walked.

I can search the internet using Siri, play music, start my iPhone camera, monitor my heartbeat, start my outdoor walking workout, use the compass, view a photo album, and listen to a podcast all by navigating with my digital crown. With this information at the ready, I find I don’t pull out the phone as much.

On the downside, I must be careful in meetings and conversation not to keep glancing at my watch. Some third-party apps are flaky, and unfortunately, Apple Notes does not work on the watch.

I still don’t like wearing a watch because of its weight and skin irritation from the band. So far, I experience that a $5 braided solo loop Amazon knockoff is more comfortable than the Apple Trail Loop band I selected when buying the watch. Trying different bands is a nice feature, and I finally mastered swapping them out.

With the Apple Watch, there is a definite cool factor for anyone with a little geek inside. Any feature on its own wouldn’t sell me on the Apple Watch—the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

Solved: Why Is My iPhone Hot When I Use the Maps App?

What to Know

* Maps and other apps that use GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth can cause an iPhone to heat up because they use a lot power.

* Defective chargers, software bugs, or damaged hardware can also cause an iPhone to get hot.

* Stop your iPhone overheating while using Maps by using an Apple charger and adapter.

Does your iPhone get hot while using Maps, or another app that uses GPS? Let's go over why your iPhone gets hot, and how you can stop your iPhone overheating.

Solved: Why Is My iPhone Hot When I Use the Maps App?

Many of our iPhone Life Insiders have asked for help with the problem of their iPhone, specifically the new iPhone 15, getting hot while using the Maps app. This is a more general question than the one answered by our article Why Is My iPhone Hot? How to Stop Your Phone Overheating, but the reasons and solutions do overlap. Let's go over why your iPhone is hot, and how to keep it from overheating when using Maps.

How Can I Stop My iPhone Overheating When Using Maps?

Image Courtesy of Apple

Important Note: If your iPhone gets hot and needs to cool down,  don't cool your iPhone by putting it in front of the AC, or in the refrigerator. Condensation can form inside your iPhone if you cool it too quickly, causing internal water damage.

If your iPhone gets hot while using the Maps app, you may see an error message like the one above: Temperature, iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it. There are several general ways to fix things when your iPhone gets hot, including an update to the latest iOS, update apps you're using when your iPhone gets hot, delete and reinstall apps that are crashing, turn off background app refresh, and more.

Beyond the general issues that can cause an iPhone to get hot, there are a few specific things to check if your iPhone gets hot while using Maps.

Check Your Charger & Adapter

Lots of us use the Google or Apple Maps app while driving, and many of us use car chargers, as well. If your iPhone is overheating while using Maps and charging in your car, make sure that your charging cable and adapter are Apple certified. These accessories are more expensive, but you'll have peace of mind knowing that they're delivering a safe amount of power and not straining your iPhone. Look for the MFi badges below to identify certified third-party accessories.

New Apple certified accessories symbols - Image courtesy of Apple

Old Apple certified accessories symbols - Image courtesy of Apple

Take Your iPhone Case Off

If you're not charging your iPhone while using Maps, or if your iPhone is overheating even with Apple-certified charging accessories, it's time to take off your case. This is because your iPhone cools off through its metal frame; a phone case slows this process, especially a thick or insulating one.

Turn Off Features You Aren't Using

This can be an annoying solution, because it requires you to change settings and turn features off and on, but if your iPhone gets hot even after following the steps above, it's time to turn off features you aren't using. First, open the Control Center of your iPhone:

* Tap the Bluetooth icon to turn off Bluetooth.

* If this doesn't help, tap the Wi-Fi icon to turn off Wi-Fi.

This is obviously annoying if you're trying to use CarPlay, or if you need Wi-Fi to run your Maps app. You can download Apple maps to use offline to make things a bit easier. You can also contact Apple Feedback to let Apple know how aggravating this is!

Be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day for more great iPhone troubleshooting and Maps app tutorials.

FAQ

* Why is my iPhone hot? Your iPhone gets hot for a variety of reasons, including damaged hardware, defective chargers, software bugs, and battery-draining apps.

* Why does my iPhone get hot when using an app with GPS? Services like GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth use more power than other apps and features, and can cause your iPhone to heat up.

* What if my iPhone still gets hot after following these steps? If your iPhone gets hot after using this tutorial, contact Apple support to make sure it's not a hardware issue.

I hope this article has stopped your iPhone from overheating when you use Maps! Be sure to check back with iPhone Life for any other trouble you run into with your Apple hardware and software.

How to Unblur an Image on iPhone—Fix Blurry Photos Fast!

What to Know

* The three best apps to unblur photos we've found are VSCO, Fotor AI, and Adobe Lightroom Photo & Video Editor.

* All of these photo editing apps are free, but users have to pay extra to use premium features.

We all take blurry photos from time to time, but luckily, you can fix blurry images right on your iPhone! Here's how to unblur a picture on an iPhone.

How to Unblur an Image on iPhone Using a Photo Editing App

Sometimes, you can prevent blurry photos by adjusting iPhone camera settings. But, if you already took a blurry image, we've found three apps that can unblur and image on an iPhone. Here's how to fix blurry pictures on an iPhone using our favorite of the apps, the Fotor AI Photo Editor. The steps will be similar on the other recommended apps.

1. Fotor AI Photo Editor (Free, Premium $39.99/year)

If you want to know how to unblur an image, this is the app. Fotor uses AI to clear up your blurred image and make your picture clearer, or even remove the blur completely. You can test this feature and see the results for free, but if you want to export the photo, you'll need to sign up for the free trial, then unsubscribe, or pay the premium fee if you love the app. Here's how to use Fotor to unblur photos:

* Open the Fotor app and tap the Plus icon to upload the blurry pictures you want to unblur.

* Tap the photo you uploaded to deblur the image.

* Tap AI Enlarger.

* Tap the check mark to save your photo; you'll have to tap Free Trial if you want to save and export the photo without the watermark.

2. VSCO (Free, Yearly Plus $29.99/year)

The free version of VSCO has an unblur feature that is definitely helpful, but doesn't completely unblur very blurry photos.

3. Lightroom Photo & Video Editor from Adobe (Free, Premium Monthly $4.99/month)

Adobe's free Lightroom app also offers an image unblurring feature, but like VSCO, it can't unblur a picture fully.

Be sure to check out our free Tip of the Day for more great iPhone photography tutorials!

FAQ

* How do you stop iPhone pictures from being blurry? Keep your iPhone lenses clean with a microfiber cloth, make sure your iPhone is still while you take photos, that there's enough light, and that you're not using Portrait mode.

* Why are my iPhone photos blurry all of a sudden? If you're getting blurry pictures out of nowhere, restart your iPhone, and clean the front and back camera lenses. If this doesn't work, contact Apple Support; you may have a hardware issue.

* Why are my iCloud photos blurry? If you have Optimize iPhone Storage turned on in iCloud settings and share photos before downloading the original, the photo may look blurry, but it won't look that way to the recipient when they open it.

By now, you should know how to unblur photos with one or more of the apps I've suggested. Be sure to check back with iPhone Life for all your photography questions.

Find Your Friends' Precise Location on iPhone (iPhone 15)

Losing track of your friends in a crowd can make it harder to meet back up and stay together, which is why Apple has added a way to track your friends’ precise location. You can locate your friends in seconds using this handy new feature.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Find your friends easily when they’re nearby.

* Never get lost when trying to meet up with friends and family.

Find Friends Using iPhone 15

System Requirements

This tip works on the iPhone 15, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max running iOS 17 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

Precision Finding does not work in all regions, and both you and the person you're trying to find must have an iPhone 15 or later.

How accurate is Find My Friends? Well, if you have an iPhone 15 updated to the latest software, you can use Precision Finding to easily locate your friends as long as you are near each other. For more great iPhone tutorials, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here’s how to find a person’s location on iPhone:

* Open the Find My app.

* Tap the People tab in the lower left corner.

* Tap the person you want to find. Both parties must be sharing their locations with one another.

* Tap Find. If you see Directions instead of Find, try tapping that. Once Apple Maps opens, tap Find My under your contact's name to re-open the Find My app and the Find button should appear.

* Your friend will receive a notification that you are trying to locate them.

* On your screen, you’ll see an arrow pointing in the direction you need to move, along with the approximate distance you need to travel. Simply follow the arrow to find your friend. If your signal is weak, the arrow will likely not appear and you will need to move to an area with better signal.

* Once you reach your friend, the screen will turn green and the arrow will change to a checkmark.

Now you can easily find your friends using your iPhone. Precision Finding also works with AirTags and AirPods Pro, so you can find those using the same steps above (except tap the Devices tab instead of the People tab).

New iPhone Charger Cable or USB-C to Lightning Adapter?

What to Know

* The iPhone 15 charging port is USB-C rather than Lightning.

* You can charge your iPhone with third-party USB-C chargers, but an MFi-certified charger is the best option.

* Apple's USB-C to Lightning adapter costs $29.99, but we don’t recommend using them on your old Lightning cables.

The iPhone’s switch from Lightning to USB-C has been a long time coming and was pushed by the EU regulations calling for universal phone chargers. So, can you sufficiently charge an iPhone with a USB-C cable made for Android phones? Not always, but getting official Apple USB-C to Lightning adapters for your old Lightning cables is not ideal either.

Can iPhone 15s Be Charged Using Any USB-C Charger?

It depends. Even though the purpose of switching from Lightning to USB-C was to make phone chargers more universal, Apple doesn't recommend using USB-C cables that are not MFi-certified. MFi stands for "Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod," and according to Apple, using non-MFi-certified cables or chargers can damage your device. While some people claim this isn't true, the iPhone 15s have proved that not every USB-C cable and charger is made equal.

Many iPhone 15 users have reported slow or inadequate charging using cables or chargers that were not MFi-certified. I have successfully used certain non-MFi-certified cables to charge my iPhone, but I prefer using the one that came with my iPhone. I have also had success using the MFi-certified USB-C cables that came with my iPad and MacBook Air. Sign up for our free Tip of the Day for more iPhone tutorials.

Should You Use the Apple USB-C to Lightning Adapter?

Apple released an official MFi-certified USB-C to Lightning adapter for $29, and some people are considering buying them so they can keep using their old Lightning chargers since so many of us have built up a collection of them. Unfortunately, using adapters can be annoying. Not only are they more likely to get unplugged mid-charge or lost, but they offer an extra element that can be damaged and lead to insufficient charging.

Plus, at $29, they cost as much as a brand-new 240W USB-C charge cable, so it doesn’t make sense to spend the same amount on an adapter. That doesn’t mean you have to waste your old MFi-certified Lightning cables. Plenty of people will still use them with the older iPhones or other compatible Apple devices. This gives you the option to sell or gift them to family and friends or those in need. You can also recycle them at your local Best Buy or any location that recycles electronics and cables.

Now you know how best to charge your iPhone and whether or not you can use third-party USB-C cables or USB-C to Lightning adapters. Next, learn about the difference between USB-C and Thunderbolt or the difference between USB-A and USB-C.

FAQ

* Is it OK to use a non Apple power adapter? It is best to use MFi-certified power adapters to charge your iPhone 15.

* Which is better: type C or Lightning? USB-C is known to be faster, more reliable, and more universal than Lightning.

Why Is My Home Screen Blurry & How to Fix It

What to Know

* Photo wallpapers are blurry by default when you create a new Lock Screen, but you can edit the blur away.

* If your Lock Screen, wallpaper, or iPhone screen are blurry unexpectedly after looking normal, a technical glitch or an incorrect setting.

* Plus, certain actions such as editing widgets, the wrong size or quality of wallpaper, or Focus modes could be the culprit.

Is your iPhone background blurry? Or maybe it’s your entire Lock Screen or even Home Screen? There are several reasons why this might be happening. In this article, we will cover ways to unblur your screen or wallpaper, whether it is happening because of certain iPhone features, incorrect settings, or a software glitch.

Jump To:

* Why Is My Home Screen Blurry?

* How to Fix Blurry Screen on iPhone: Turn Off Dim Lock Screen

* How to Reset Home Screen Layout

* FAQ

Why Is My Home Screen Blurry?

There are many reasons why your Lock Screen, Home Screen, or wallpaper is blurry. In some cases, the blurring effect is done by design, but it can also be caused by certain settings or an unexpected bug. Here are the reasons for your iPhone background blur:

* When you create a new Lock Screen and set it as a Wallpaper Pair, the wallpaper will be blurry by default. This is true for photo, Emoji, and other types of Lock Screens. If this is the issue you are experiencing, you can easily customize your wallpaper and turn off the blur.

* It is also possible that you are using a bad-quality image for your wallpaper. Or, if just the top, bottom, left, or right of your photo Lock Screen is blurry, you may be using an image that is too small to fit your screen. However, you will still be able to zoom out beyond the boundaries, causing parts of the image to appear blurred rather than appear cut off. You can check this by customizing your Lock Screen and zooming in on the image to see if it looks better that way.

* If you use a large widget on your Lock Screen, open a folder of apps on your Home Screen, or long-press a widget or Smart Stack on your iPhone, everything in the background becomes blurry temporarily. Just swipe up or tap the background to return to your regular Lock Screen or Home Screen.

* The Sleep Focus Mode is another feature that blurs your screen by design. Since the purpose of Sleep Mode is to prevent distractions on your screen and allow you to sleep, it automatically dims and blurs your Lock Screen. The only way to fix this is to turn Sleep Mode off or stop sharing Focus Modes across devices so that you can use Sleep Mode on your iPad or MacBook without it appearing on your iPhone.

* Other Focus Modes can also blur your screen, but you can customize them and toggle off the Dim Lock Screen setting. I’ll show you how to do that in the steps below.

* If none of this has helped, then the issue could be a bug or technical glitch. To fix this, start by restarting your iPhone, updating to the latest iOS, or, as a last resort, resetting your Home Screen Layout, which will remove any customization to your Home Screen.

How to Fix Blurry Screen on iPhone: Turn Off Dim Lock Screen

If your blurry Lock Screen is caused by a Focus Mode, meaning it only happens when a specific Focus Mode is on, you can change some settings to fix it. Remember that you cannot edit this setting in the Sleep Focus Mode. To turn off the Dim Lock Screen feature in other Focus Modes:

* Open Settings.

* Tap Focus.

* Select the Focus Mode that is blurring your Lock Screen.

* Tap Option.

* Toggle off Dim Lock Screen.

How to Reset Home Screen Layout

Resetting your Home Screen layout should be a last-ditch resort because it will remove any customization you've made to your Home Screen, and it can be a pain to re-organize your Home Screen from scratch. You may want to reach out to Apple Customer Support before you try this, but if you are confident this will solve the blurriness:

Warning

If the blurry screen is caused by a technical glitch or software bug, this will not fix it. It may be a good idea to wait until there’s a new software update available before you reset your Home Screen settings.

* Open Settings and tap General.

* Scroll to the very bottom and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.

* Tap Reset.

* Select Reset Home Screen Layout.

* Finally, if you are sure, tap Reset Home Screen to proceed.

Now you know the many reasons why your Home Screen may be blurry. Or why you are seeing a blurry/foggy background or wallpaper or Lock Screen. Next, learn how to stop your Lock Screen from randomly changing.

FAQ

* How to delete wallpaper on iPhone? The quickest way to delete your iPhone wallpaper is to tap and hold your Lock Screen and swipe up to delete it. This also deletes the corresponding wallpaper. If you don’t want to delete the Lock Screen, then check out how to change Lock Screen on iPhone instead.

* How to blur background on iPhone? You can either blur the background of Portrait images in the Photos app or blur the background of wallpapers in the Lock Screen customization settings.

* How to make picture fit wallpaper on iPhone? When you are customizing a photo Lock Screen, you can pinch zoom in or zoom out to make the picture fit right. Keep in mind that not every image makes a great Lock Screen or Wallpaper; a vertical image fits best when considering dimensions.

How to Stop Sharing Location without Them Knowing

What to Know

* When you stop sharing your location in iMessage, it does not notify the other person.

* If you are worried about the other person finding out, you can temporarily disable location sharing in Find My.

* Instead of sharing your location indefinitely, try sharing it for only one hour or send a Check In.

Sharing your location with a trusted contact can be useful for safety purposes or if you want to provide a friend with an estimated time of arrival. However, at some point, you might not want to continue sharing your location. So how do you stop sharing your location without them knowing?

Jump To:

* How to Stop Sharing Location without Them Knowing

* How to Temporarily Turn Off Location

* Alternatives to Location Sharing

* Location Sharing FAQ

How to Turn Off Location without the Other Person Knowing

If you want to stop sharing your location without the other person knowing, the good news is that there is no notification when you stop sharing your location. You will see a message in your iMessage conversation that says, “You stopped sharing location with [contact].”

However, this message is only visible to you, and the other person will not see that you have stopped sharing your location (unless they try to check your location and realize they can’t). On the other hand, if you start sharing your location again, they will receive a notification that you started sharing your location. To stop sharing location without notifying in iMessage:

* Open the Find My app.

* Tap People in the lower left corner.

* Tap the person with whom you want to stop sharing your location.

* Scroll down and tap Stop Sharing My Location.

* Tap Stop Sharing Location to confirm.

Your location will no longer be shared with this contact. That’s how to stop sharing your location without them knowing! For more iPhone tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Temporarily Turn Off Location on iPhone without Them Knowing

You can also temporarily switch off location-sharing if you only want to stop sharing your location for a short amount of time:

* Open the Find My app.

* Tap Me in the bottom right corner.

* Tap the toggle next to Share My Location to disable location sharing.

* Tap the toggle to re-enable location sharing when you are ready.

Note: This only disables location sharing for as long as you have the toggle switched off. When you switch it back on, your location will continue to be shared. Keep in mind that when this toggle is disabled, Find My will not be able to locate your phone if you lose it.

This will stop sharing location without notifying in iMessage until you re-enable the toggle.

Alternatives to Location Sharing

If you don’t want to share your location with someone indefinitely but you still want them to be able to locate you for safety purposes, consider instead only sharing your location for one hour or until the end of the day (see Step 7 for reference).

Alternatively, if you and your contact are both running iOS 17, try sending a Check In instead. This allows your trusted contact to temporarily see your location until you can confirm that you’ve reached your destination safely. This also prevents you from having to turn off location on your iPhone without them knowing.

FAQ

* Does someone get notified when you stop sharing location? No. While you will see a notification in your iMessage conversation that you stopped sharing your location, this message is only visible to you, not the other person. The only way they will know you stopped sharing your location is if they try to check your location and notice it is no longer there.

* How do I turn off my phone location? You can turn off location services in the Settings app. Simply tap Privacy & Security, then tap Location Services,  and then tap the toggle to disable Location Services. Keep in mind that this will also affect functionality with weather and navigation apps since they depend on your location to work.

Video Games & Kids: Stop Worrying & Love Tech

Kids and video games: it seems like everyone has an opinion on the topic, but there isn’t a lot of practical advice for how to walk the middle road between unhinged internet addiction and living like the Amish. I’ve had my share of internal struggles about letting my kids game, and honestly still do! Here’s what I’ve learned along the way about introducing gaming in a safe and healthy way. Hopefully, my experience will help you find a strategy that works for your family.

On any given day, my older daughter, Arwydd, will play Genshin Impact (free), a magical adventure game, remotely with one or more of her friends. She plays 30–40 minutes a day during the week, a bit more on the weekends and during school breaks. She’s allowed to play more, but school, work, and sports naturally limit her gaming time.

My younger daughter, Frances, enjoys Cats & Soup (free), a relaxing game where cats cook and serve in a forest restaurant, or Merge Dragons (free), a fantasy puzzle game, on our iPad Air (with Screen Time settings enabled). She also enjoys playing Super Smash Bros ($59.99) on her Nintendo Switch Lite but is limited to an hour a day total for whichever games she chooses.

Growing Up with Tech

I decided to check in with my coworkers for their opinions on gaming and kids. The consensus was that playing video games as children hadn’t caused problems academically or socially.

“I loved video games as a kid. My mom limited them to one hour a day between my sisters and me, so we’d each get 20 minutes, but honestly, the trick is to offer plenty of other fun and engaging activities. My sisters and I always snuck more time than we were allowed, but still wrote books, learned archery, made Pokémon out of polymer clay, broke said Pokémon by sending them bungee jumping, and all the other stuff kids do.”

-Amy Spitzfaden-Both, Managing Editor

“I grew up on a farm, and my parents didn’t put limits on how much time I was allowed to spend watching TV or playing video games. I still spent a ton of my time outside or reading.”

-Elisabeth Garry, Associate Editor

“My parents never limited my screen time, but it did end up costing me, as I developed a hyper-fixation on storytelling and went to grad school for literature. And now I work for iPhone Life, so… screens haven’t been my issue. I also have precious memories of playing pretend and going outside as a child. I don’t feel like screens hindered my childhood at all; honestly, the opposite.”

-Rachel Needell, Feature Writer

But things haven’t always been this way. Arwydd was born in 2005, and gaming wasn’t even on my radar as a parenting issue. I was completely unaware of the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS, both released in 2004, and even the debut of the first iPhone in 2007 and the first iPad in 2010 went over my head. My cellphone? A trusty Nokia 3310.

Heck, I didn’t even own a laptop until 2009. We would watch movies from the library using the DVD drive. My first smartphone, an iPhone 4, was gifted to me in 2013, and we finally added a TV and internet access in 2014.

By the time my second daughter was born in 2014, the world was a different place. Screen time and digital addiction was a hot topic in parenting books and magazines. My eight-year-old reported that many of her classmates had their own smartphones and started asking for one of her own.

And… here’s where I messed up. I didn’t do anything particularly wrong; I just didn’t do anything. “Later,” I told her. “When you’re in high school.” But every year, she clamored more for the devices and accompanying experiences I was denying her. She felt different from her peers, even alienated, but I couldn’t see it. I had grown up without “all that” and thought she’d be better off without devices. But what I really did was set up gaming as forbidden fruit.

Setting Up Parental Controls

You don’t need to pay for a parental control app for your iPhone or iPad; Apple’s Screen Time feature is free and easy to use. Let’s go over how to set up Screen Time settings on your iPhone or iPad, as well as how to lock those settings so your curious kids can’t circumvent them!

To use these settings, you’ll first need to set up Family Sharing and add your kids to your Family Sharing Group. Then head to Screen Time in Settings, then tap on your child’s name under Family, to turn on ScreenTime (read here for more on setup). Now you can set Apps, Books, and TV Shows to the ratings you find appropriate, and tap Turn on Restrictions to turn on these limits.

Apps are the section that matters most for gaming; I’ve selected the 4+ rating, so Fran can play games rated for ages 0-8. You can completely disallow apps or choose an older age rating as appropriate.

You can also set time limits for how long your child can play games. Tap Games, then Time Amount, set your time limit, tap Set App Limit, then choose a ScreenTime Passcode so your child can’t change these limits.

There are many more ScreenTime limits you can set to keep your kids gaming at appropriate age limits and times, including blocking them from purchasing apps, and setting downtime, so their gaming doesn’t interfere with school or sleep.

As to which console was the best, the Switch Lite came highly recommended by my coworkers. I was sold when I found out about the accompanying parental controls that would allow me to restrict age-inappropriate software, block posting to social media, set time limits for daily play, and even view play activity. Armed with these assurances, I bit the bullet and purchased a turquoise Switch Lite, then gifted it to Fran for Christmas.

Over the last three months, Fran went from wanting to play her Switch every spare moment (and some we didn’t have to spare) to being able to control herself and play for about an hour a day after school, homework, snack, and chores. I think the initial insanity was 100 percent due to the novelty factor, and now that it’s died down a bit, I’m not too concerned about it any longer.

Arwydd has played video games less and less due to her burgeoning talent with the acoustic guitar I got her for Christmas. She even decided to delete Tik Tok from her iPhone because she deemed it a time suck.

And me? I recognize that it’s not fair to make our family party like it’s 1899, even if I wish we could. Video games are now a vital part of childhood culture, and they’re here to stay. My kids need to learn to moderate their tech time while they’re young, and I think we’ve made a good start.

Apple Watch Double Tap: What Is It & How to Use It (watchOS 10)

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 include a new feature called Double Tap. This handy new feature allows you to control your watch with a simple hand gesture. Find out exactly how this works and how to enable it.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Interact with notifications, answer calls, pause music, etc., hands-free.

* Stop timers and snooze alarms with a pinching gesture.

How to Set Up Double Tap on Apple Watch

System Requirements

This tip works on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 as long as they are updated to watchOS 10.1. Find out how to update to the latest version of watchOS.

When will Double Tap be available on Apple Watch? Starting with watchOS 10.1, you can control your Apple Watch with a simple gesture. You can pause and play music, stop timers and snooze alarms, or interact with notifications just by tapping your thumb and forefinger together twice in a pinching motion. If you have an older Apple Watch, you can try enabling AssistiveTouch for a similar effect. For more hidden Apple Watch features, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here’s how to set up Double Tap on Apple Watch:

* Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch, and tap Gestures.

* Tap Double Tap.

* Ensure the toggle next to Double Tap is enabled.

* You can scroll down and select how Double Tap controls media Playback…

* …as well as how it interacts with Smart Stack widgets.

* Whenever you use the Double Tap gesture, an icon will appear the top of the screen that looks like a hand pinching its fingers together. This indicates you have successfully used the Double Tap gesture. It will also highlight the control that was selected with Double Tap. In this example, it's the stop timer button.

With the Apple Watch’s Double Tap feature, you can interact with your device and navigate hands-free. I find this most useful to stop timers or pause music when only my left hand is free.

How to Use iOS 17 StandBy Mode in iPhone Sleep Mode & Other Focus Modes

What to Know

* Any Focus mode that disables the Always-On display will cause the StandBy screen to turn off automatically after a while.

* You can disable the StandBy setting that automatically turns the display off to always keep the screen on.

StandBy mode is a feature in iOS 17 and later that is sometimes called nightstand mode. It will turn off automatically unless you have an iPhone with an Always-On display. Even if your Always-On display is toggled on, using Focus modes such as Sleep Focus will turn the StandBy mode screen off automatically. However, as long as you have Always-On display toggled on, you can adjust a single StandBy setting to make sure your screen never turns off.

First of all, StandBy can only stay on permanently if you have an iPhone that has an Always-On display, so if you don’t see the Always-On display option in your Display & Brightness, you won’t be able to keep StandBy on the entire time. Personally, I prefer having to tap it to see it anyway!

There are several reasons why you might be experiencing iOS 17 StandBy not working with certain Focus modes. There are Focus mode and StandBy settings that turn your display off automatically. By default, Sleep Focus mode disables the Always-On display, automatically turning off your iPhone display.

StandBy mode has a Night mode that can be enabled to show your StandBy display in red and black to make it easier to see in low light. It prevents your phone from lighting up the entire room and hurting your eyes. Night mode can be disabled to keep your StandBy display bright around the clock if you prefer. You will also have to set your Turn Display Off setting to Never so that you can still see the display with the Sleep Focus on.

If you do like using Night mode, you may want to toggle on Motion To Wake. This turns your StandBy display on automatically when your iPhone detects nearby movement. Without Motion To Wake toggled on, you’ll have to tap your iPhone’s display to see StandBy mode. To discover more useful iPhone features, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Use StandBy Mode (iOS 17 and Later) with All Focus Modes

Here’s how to adjust your iPhone StandBy Mode settings to keep the display from turning off automatically even while using the Sleep Focus Mode. If you’ve disabled the Always-On display in a specific Focus Mode, you’ll have to remove it before tweaking your StandBy settings.

* Open Settings.

* Tap StandBy.

* Tap Display.

* Under Turn Display Off, tap Never.

Note

Setting Turn Display Off to Never also turns off Night mode. You can only use Night mode if you select Automatically or After 20 Seconds under Turn Display Off. If you like to use Night mode alongside Sleep Focus mode, you’ll have to put up with the display turning off automatically (or after 20 seconds) if you wish to use Night mode on StandBy. If you select After 20 Seconds, it will automatically disable Motion To Wake.

Now you know how to edit StandBy Mode on iPhones simultaneously using Focus Modes, including Sleep Focus, so that the StandBy display stays on. Next, learn other ways to troubleshoot StandBy Mode not working on your iPhone!
