AirTags Not Connecting: AirTag Troubleshooting Tips
Apple AirTags are the newest addition to the Apple ecosystem. Just as any new device, it comes with many exciting features but also many questions! I will walk you through AirTag troubleshooting tips and help you figure out why your AirTag isn’t working.

What Are Apple AirTags?
Before I dive into troubleshooting, let me explain what AirTags are. AirTags are tracking devices that work with Find My and can help you find everyday devices such as keys, wallets, backpacks, and so much more. They even happen to be water-resistant, so you can safely bring them to the beach.
Setting up AirTags is quite simple, but they don't work perfectly. One big concern has been safety; you can read about AirTag privacy issues here. So far, the only issue I have experienced personally is with re-pairing a removed AirTag. Let me tell you how I fixed it!
Return to top
Common AirTag Issues
In general, AirTags seem to work exactly as they should. However, a few common errors have been reported. One occurs when an AirTag is removed from FindMy. After it is removed, it does not show up when you try to re-pair it with the same or different iPhone.
Another issue is a weak signal that makes precision finding unavailable. Finally, if the AirTag suddenly stops working altogether, it is possible that the battery ran out. Although your iPhone is supposed to warn you when it's low, it's possible to miss it. To learn more about your AirTags, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Return to top
AirTag Precision Finding Not Working: Signal is Weak Notification
If the precision finding on your AirTag isn’t working, it may be caused by a weak signal. If you get a weak signal notification, try going to a different location to see if it’s better there. If this keeps happening or if moving doesn’t help, you’ll need to check your settings.
* Open Settings on your iPhone.
* Tap on your name.
* Select Find My.
* Tap Find My iPhone.
* Make sure that everything is toggled on.
* Return to Settings and tap Bluetooth.
* Make sure Bluetooth is toggled on.
* Next, check that your Wi-Fi or cellular connection is strong.
* Return to Settings and tap Privacy.
* Select Location Services.
* Make sure Location Services is toggled on.
* Next, scroll down and tap Find My.
* Make sure that Ask Next Time or While Using the App is selected.
* Also, make sure that Precision Location is toggled on.
* Finally, make sure that your iPhone is up to date by returning to Settings and tapping General.
* Tap Software Update.
* If an update is available, update your iPhone. Updates can help fix known bugs and issues.
If the issue persists, try to reset the AirTag next. Return to top
How to Reset an AirTag
Resetting an AirTag can be compared to restarting your iPhone to fix some glitches. When I removed an AirTag from Find My and tried to pair it again, it wouldn’t show up until I reset it. Resetting might also solve other issues:
* Open the AirTag by placing your fingers on either side of the Apple logo and turning the cap counter-clockwise.
* Remove the cap and battery.
* Put the battery back in the same direction it was when you opened the AirTag. Press down on it until you hear a sound.
* When the sound finishes, remove the battery again and put it back in, then push down on it.
* Repeat this process four times.
* The fifth time you do it, the sound will be different. This indicates that the AirTag can be paired again.
* Put the cover back on, aligning the tabs over the slots.
* Push down and rotate clockwise until it is tightly closed.
Pro Tip: It took me multiple resets to be able to re-pair my AirTag with my iPhone. If you are still experiencing issues after multiple attempts, contact Apple support directly.

How to Check Battery Life on an AirTag & Replace It
There is currently no way to find out the battery life of your AirTag. However, you will receive a low battery warning when it’s time to get a new one. If you need to replace a battery, follow the steps above to remove the lid, replace the battery, and replace the lid again.
AirTags use a basic CR2032 battery that you can buy in most drug or convenience stores. According to Apple, AirTags can last up to a year with regular use.
Return to top AirTags are a long-awaited product that I personally love using. It has some exciting features that other trackers don't offer, such as precision tracking. How to Reset iPad to Sell It & Other Privacy Steps You Should Take
If you’re considering an iPad upgrade and want to sell or give away your current device, you will need to know how to reset an iPad to factory settings to prevent the new owner from having access to your personal information. We'll show you how to factory reset an iPad to prep it for selling, plus three other important privacy steps to take before you sell an iPad.

* How to Reset iPad Settings: Disable Find My on iPad
* How to Reset iPad Settings: Sign Out of iCloud
* How to Factory Reset iPad
1. Back Up Data before You Reset iPad
Before you sell the iPad, be sure to back it up. Backing up your iPad is more than just a great way to ensure you don’t lose data; it also allows for the fastest possible setup of a new iPad if you do purchase one to replace your old one. You can choose to back up an iPad to a computer, but an iCloud backup will typically be the simpler option.
Follow these steps to back up an iPad to iCloud:
* Open Settings.
* Tap on your Apple ID profile at the top of the sidebar.
* Tap iCloud.
* Tap iCloud Backup.
* Check the date and time of the last successful backup.
* If the last backup was more than a couple of hours ago or you’ve made significant changes to your iPad since the last backup, tap Back Up Now.
It will likely take a little while to back up, depending on how much data is being synced with iCloud. Once the iPad backup is complete, you can verify its success by following these steps and checking that the last successful backup date is accurate.
2. How to Reset iPad Settings: Disable Find My on iPad
Find My is an incredibly helpful tool, especially if you have multiple Apple devices and often lose them. However, it's a feature that has to be disabled prior to selling or trading in an Apple device, so you'll need to know how to disable Find My before you sell the iPad.
* Open Settings.
* Tap on your Apple ID profile at the top of the sidebar.
* Select Find My.
* Tap Find My iPad.
* Tap the Find My iPad toggle to disable the feature. The toggle will be gray when it's turned off.
* Enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
* Tap Turn Off.
Now that you've disabled Find My iPad, use the next section to sign out of iCloud so that you'll be ready to factory reset the iPad.
3. How to Reset iPad Settings: Sign Out of iCloud
Signing out of iCloud automatically signs you out of the App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime. Since you already completed a backup, you’ll still have all of your preferences and personal configurations saved for when you’re ready to set up your new iPad.
To sign out of iCloud on iPad:
* Open Settings.
* Tap on your Apple ID profile at the top of the sidebar.
* Scroll all the way to the bottom.
* Tap Sign Out.
* Enter your Apple ID password when prompted.
* Tap Turn Off.
* Do not opt to keep any data on your device.
* Tap Sign Out.
* Tap Sign Out again to confirm.
Now that you're signed out of everything, we'll show you how to wipe an iPad's data to reset it for the new owner.
4. How to Factory Reset iPad
Erasing your personal information is a crucial step to take before you give away or sell an iPad. When you factory reset an iPad it erases all saved information (which is why performing a backup is so important), which gives the new owner a fresh start and protects your personal information.
Here's how to restore an iPad to factory settings:
* Open Settings.
* Select General.
* Choose Reset.
* Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
* If prompted to back up your iPad, select Erase Now (don't worry, you performed the requested iPad backup in the first step).
* Enter your passcode.
* Tap Erase.
* Tap Erase again to confirm.
There you have it! In just a few easy steps, you can give away, trade in, or sell an iPad with confidence and know that your personal information is secure and ready to transfer to your new device. How to Reset MacBook or Mac & 3 Other To-Dos before You Sell It
You want your Mac to be in great shape before you sell it or give it away, so you'll need to know how to restore a Mac to factory settings (including how to reinstall macOS afterward), plus a few other important skills. Follow these simple steps to help you get top dollar for your old device and ensure your private data isn’t accessible to the new owner.

1. Back Up Mac to Prevent Data Loss
Your Mac may be set up to back up automatically, but it is always a good idea to check the date of your most recent backup prior to resetting your Mac to ensure you won’t lose any data. Apple’s pre-installed Time Machine app is an easy way to back up your device, as long as you have an external hard drive handy. You can also save your files, pictures, music, and more in iCloud, though that often requires a paid subscription in order to have enough space to store everything you'll want on your new computer. In order to make the iCloud vs. Time Machine decision, it's best to weigh your Mac backup options first.
2. Sign Out of Everything Before You Factory Reset Mac
Be sure to sign out of all of your accounts, but especially those that hold your personal information. These include your Apple account, Messages, email, and any other password-protected profiles or apps that you're signed into on your computer. One of the more crucial accounts to sign out of and delete from your old Mac is iCloud, as this will automatically sign you out of the App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime. To sign out of and delete an iCloud account from a Mac:
* Open System Preferences.
* Select Apple ID.
* Deselect Find My Mac.
* Enter your password when prompted and click Continue.
* Your Mac may pop up a request to authenticate user. If this happens, enter your Mac password (not your Apple ID password) and click OK.
* Click Overview.
* Click Sign Out.
* Deselect all options that are currently selected.
* Click Continue.
* Click Delete from Mac.
* If prompted, click Delete from Mac again.
Bonus: Removing all Bluetooth pairings is an optional step that may be helpful. Simply navigate to Bluetooth in System Preferences and click the X that appears when you hover over the device you wish to unpair.
3. How to Reset Mac NVRAM to Clear User Settings
Before you factory reset the Mac, you'll want to reset NVRAM. This clears user settings and resets things like security features that you may have altered over the course of your use of the computer. It's a quick and simple process that you'll perform while the computer starts up, and since the computer will be off when you do this, it may be beneficial for you to print these instructions or pull them up on a secondary device (such as your iPhone) so that you don't miss any steps.
* Turn off your Mac.
* Be ready to press and hold the keys option+cmd+P+R, but don't press them yet.
* Turn your Mac back on and immediately press and hold option+cmd+P+R for about 20 seconds.
* Release the keyboard shortcut keys after the 20 seconds have elapsed.
If the Mac logo disappears and reappears, don't be alarmed! Your Mac should restart as normal, but certain settings will have been reset. Next, as long as you've backed up all data that you need, you can move on to the next section to learn how to restore a Mac to factory settings.
4. How to Factory Reset MacBook or Mac & Reinstall MacOS
To remove the rest of your data, you will need to erase your hard drive, which is the same as doing a factory reset on a MacBook or Mac. It may be beneficial for you to print these instructions or pull them up on a secondary device (such as your iPhone) so that you don't miss anything. I'm sorry to say that many of these steps cannot be accompanied by images since they involve system processes that can't be screenshot, but the steps themselves should be sufficient to guide you.
First, choose which kind of Mac you want to reset to factory settings:
* Factory Reset Mac: Intel
* Factory Reset Mac: M1 Apple Silicon
How to Factory Reset MacBook or Mac: Intel Processor
If the mac you're selling is older than those released in late 2020, it'll have an Intel processor instead of Apple's M1 processor. If you're still unsure and the computer in question is a MacBook, we can help you identify which MacBook you have. It's best to update macOS to the latest compatible version before doing this.
Here's how to reset Macs with Intel chips and reinstall mac OS if you choose to do so:
* Turn off your Mac.
* Turn on your Mac, and while the Mac is restarting, hold down the keyboard combination cmd+R until you see the Mac logo or another icon or image appear.
* If requested, log in as administrator.
* A utilities window will appear.
* Click on Disk Utility.
Image courtesy of Apple
* Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar underneath the Internal heading (or the name of your disk if you've changed its name from Macintosh HD).
* If you don't see Macintosh HD or your chosen disk name, shut down your computer, unplug all external devices (you can leave things like mouse and keyboard plugged in if necessary), and start these steps over.
* Once you have selected the drive, click Erase in the toolbar.
* Make sure the Name section says "Macintosh HD."
* The Format drop-down menu should say "APFS" or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." This is based on system recommendation, so you can leave it as long as one of the two is showing up there.
* If you have a button called Erase Volume Group, click it. If not, click Erase.
Image courtesy of Apple
* If prompted, type in your Apple ID.
* Once the erase process has completed, repeat these steps for any other disk volumes under the Internal heading (you'll only have these if you previously added disk volumes using Disk Utility).
* Exit the Disk Utility menu when you're done.
* To start back up and reinstall macOS, click Reinstall macOS in the utilities window.
* Click Continue.
* Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall macOS on the factory-reset MacBook or Mac.
How to Factory Reset MacBook or Mac: M1 (Apple Silicon) Processor
If you are selling your M1 MacBook or iMac, the process to factory reset the Mac will be slightly different than the one for a Mac with an Intel processor.
Important: Before you start this process, you'll need to make sure you're using the most current macOS version. If you're not, update macOS on the computer you intend to sell before continuing. This ensures that the factory reset is performed using the most current software, which makes the process smoother and more reliable.
To factory reset a Mac with an Apple silicon processor and reinstall macOS if you choose to do so:
* Turn off your Mac.
* Press and hold the power button to turn your Mac back on, and continue to hold the button until you see a window with startup options.
* Click Options.
* Click Continue.
Image courtesy of Apple
* If requested, log in as administrator.
* If requested, enter the Apple ID and password that was most recently used with the Mac you're resetting.
* A utilities window will appear.
* Click on Disk Utility.
Image courtesy of Apple
* Locate (but don't yet click on) Macintosh HD in the sidebar underneath the Internal heading.
* If you don't see Macintosh HD (or your chosen disk name if you previously renamed the Macintosh HD disk), shut down your computer, unplug all external devices except necessary ones like mouse and keyboard, and start these steps over.
* Now, if you see more disk volumes other than Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data under the Internal section of the sidebar, select them each one by one and click the minus button in the toolbar. This will delete each additional volume. (You'll only have additional volumes if you previously added them manually using Disk Utility, so it's not common)
* Do not delete any disks listed under the External the Disk Images sections.
* Next, click on Macintosh HD.
* Click the erase icon in the toolbar.
Image courtesy of Apple
* Make sure the Name section says "Macintosh HD."
* The Format drop-down menu should say "APFS."
* Click Erase Volume Group.
Image courtesy of Apple
* If prompted, type in your Apple ID.
* When the Mac starts back up, you'll be prompted to follow on-screen instructions to choose a language.
* The Mac will begin activation, which will require a stable internet connection.
* To set up Wi-Fi access in order to allow for activation, either connect a network cable or click on the Wi-Fi icon in the Menu bar to connect to the internet.
* Once the Mac has activated, click Exit to Recovery Utilities.
* To start back up and reinstall macOS, click Reinstall macOS in the utilities window.
* Click Continue.
* Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall macOS on the factory-reset MacBook or Mac.
It may seem like a complicated process to sell a MacBook or Mac, but we think it's worth the effort because of how well Macs retain their value and remain relevant much longer as compared to their PC counterparts. If you follow these steps, you can be confident that you will protect your personal information and leave a positive impression on your Mac’s new owner. WatchOS 8: Who Can Participate in the Apple Beta Software Program?
You can download and run watchOS 8 if you have the Apple Watch Series 3 or later paired with an iPhone 6 or later, running iOS 15. Find out which Apple Watch model you have here. To learn more about your Apple Watch, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.
Is the watchOS 8 Beta Download Safe?
Apple lets people download and test the beta software before the official release. This means that you will get to explore the new features showcased during the recent WWDC keynote event. Since it isn’t officially released yet, the beta program comes with bugs and other issues that will be resolved before watchOS 8 is publicly released this fall.
Pros:
The reason most people get the beta is to enjoy new features early. This year, we can't wait for the new workouts, watch faces, the Mindfulness app, and so much more. You can read about everything to expect on watchOS 8 here. When you install the beta, you will also get a Feedback app on your device. You can use the app to report any issues directly to Apple.
Cons:
The public beta is released to help Apple work out software bugs and other issues. It will not run perfectly and may interfere with features that you use regularly. Apple Watch betas are particularly tricky because they do not let you downgrade to the previously-released OS versions once the beta is installed. You will also have to install the iOS beta to use the watchOS beta.
Before You Install the Apple Watch Public Beta
Many people use a secondary device to install the beta to keep their primary device running as usual. If you decide to install the beta on your primary device, make sure to create a backup to protect your data. Learn how to back up your Apple Watch here.
How to Sign Up for Public Beta Testing & Install watchOS 8
Right now, only developers can get watchOS 8. To get this, you need to enroll as an Apple Developer ($99/year.) At the WWDC, a public beta for watchOS 8 was announced to come in July. This will be free to download for anyone registered for the Apple Beta Software Program.
To enroll and download the beta software, use the following steps. Please keep in mind that you cannot downgrade from the beta to a previously released OS version once the beta is installed. You will, however, be able to update to the official update once it is released this fall.
* If you haven’t already registered for the Apple Beta Software Program, you’ll need to do it first. Tap sign up. If you already registered in the past, tap sign in.
* Enter your Apple ID and password. You may need to perform a Two-Factor Authentication.
* Make sure to read the Agreement so that you are aware of any potential issues that might occur. Tap Accept.
* You'll be taken to a Guide for Public Betas. If you haven't downloaded a public beta before, you will have to enroll your devices in the Apple Beta Software Program. Before you can enroll your Apple Watch, you will need to enroll your iPhone. Once your iPhone is enrolled, use this link or tap watchOS on the Apple Beta Software Program page.
* Under the first step, tap Download profile. Until the public beta for watchOS 8 is available just yet, this will download the watchOS 7 beta.
* Tap Allow.
* You’ll be taken to Install Profile. Tap Install.
* Make sure to read the Consent Agreement, tap Install.
* Tap Install again to confirm.
* You will be prompted to restart your iPhone. Tap Restart.
* After the reboot, open the Watch app on your iPhone.
* Tap General.
* Tap Software Update.
* Tap Download and Install.
You can have so much fun with the Apple Watch beta update. However, keep in mind that you will be stuck with the beta until the new software is officially released. During this time, you may experience bugs and may lose access to valuable features and apps. Should You Sign Up for the Apple Beta Software Program?
Following the WWDC 2021 event, Apple's Beta software for iOS 15, iPadOS 15, macOS Monterey, tvOS 15 and watchOS 8 are scheduled for a public beta release sometime in July. If you enjoy being an early adopter and testing the newest technology, you might be interested in enrolling in the Apple Beta software program and becoming a beta tester. Being a beta tester can be an exciting and rewarding experience, however, all bets are off when dealing with pre-released software. In the article below, we'll discuss the Apple Beta Software Program in further detail, and also cover the pros and cons of enrolling in the program.

* Advantages to Enrolling in the iOS Beta Program
* Disadvantages of Installing Apple Beta Software
* Bottom Line: Play it Safe
What Is the Apple Beta Program?
Beta software is newly developed software that hasn't yet been extensively tested and debugged. The Apple Beta Software Program lets you enroll your devices to try out this pre-release software. Through this large pool of everyday users, Apple can then catch outlying issues and solve problems before releasing this update to the general public.
When you sign up for the Apple Beta program, a Feedback app is also installed on your device, allowing you to send feedback on quality and usability directly to Apple to help identify common bugs and issues. Enrolling in the Beta testing program is voluntary, and there is no compensation for your participation. Why do it? We'll walk through the pros and cons of enrolling in this program below.
Advantages of Enrolling in the Beta Software Program
1. Free access to exciting new features and upgrades.
This year, a range of exciting new features have been promised, with everything from a split view allowing you to multitask on your iPad to improved sound quality via spatial audio on your MacOS. If you adore testing the latest software and learning about new tech, you'll likely enjoy the experience of being a beta tester! With the Apple public beta software, you'll have access to new functionalities before most people, allowing you to become an expert before the commercial version is released to the general public several months later.
2. Your feedback helps Apple shape its software.
As mentioned above, when you install the beta software, a Feedback Assistant app is installed on your device. Through this app you can offer valuable feedback and report any software bugs directly to Apple. If you enjoy exploring new features and offering feedback, helping debug Apple's software can be a rewarding experience. Through your feedback, you are helping to create stronger software (and less issues for the general public).
Disadvantages of Installing Apple Beta Software
The potential risks of testing Apple's Beta software are fairly obvious: this software is still in development and can be unreliable. We'll discuss the downside and potential risks in further detail below.
1. Beta software can cause issues in device functionality.
Software bugs can cause apps to repeatedly crash and certain programs may not run properly. In serious cases, you should be able to restore your device to the previous software version, however, there is the potential risk that the beta software will cause permanent device issues. Because of this, Apple strongly recommends that you test beta software only on non-essential devices. The Apple beta updates should also only be installed on personal devices (not work devices or those you share with others).
2. Software glitches can also damage your data.
This one should make you sweat a little. Beta software can potentially cause apps to crash, resulting in lost data. Before installing any beta software it is important to have a full backup of your device on iCloud or an external storage device. With Macs you can also set up a partition as a means of safely installing the beta software.
3. Resolving these issues might require you to restore your device.
This disadvantage is really an extension of the two above, however, I've listed it separately here to highlight an important point. Debugging these potential issues and finding workarounds can be time-consuming. If the software glitches are really frustrating, you may need to remove the beta profile and completely restore your computer to the original software version prior to the beta install. This can mean losing all data accumulated between installing and removing the beta software. So before installing, it is important to consider whether you're willing to put the time and effort into resolving issues from any software glitches.
Bottom Line: Play It Safe
In the end, I recommend avoiding the Apple public beta program and waiting for the commercial release of the latest update. Getting access to new features is exciting, but the potential issues can become a real headache. However, if you are unfazed by the risks and disadvantages discussed above, you may be exactly the leading-edge beta tester Apple's been looking for! Fall 2021 iPad Rumors: A Bigger iPad Mini 6 & the Cheapest Ever Entry-Level iPad 9
Apple's April 'Spring Loaded' event brought us a new iPad Pro, but rumor has it that there will be more iPad releases this fall. Reliable Apple leakers are predicting an entry-level iPad that’s cheaper than ever before! Plus, the display on the iPad Mini is expected to get bigger as it loses the Home button.

New iPad Availability & Price
A sixth-generation iPad mini and an entry-level iPad (ninth generation) are expected to be released this September or October alongside the iPhone 13. If the new iPad mini isn't released in 2021, there's a chance it might come in the spring of 2022. According to TechRadar, the iPad mini will likely cost $399, just like its predecessor.
The new entry-level iPad might also be coming out this fall, but Apple hasn't confirmed this. Rumor has it that it will be the cheapest iPad yet, targeting students with a jaw-dropping cost of $299. There are also whispers from Bloomberg about a new iPad Pro with a glass back coming in 2022, even though Apple just released a new one a few months ago.

The Cheapest Entry-Level iPad Ever
Fans were disappointed that the Spring Apple Event introduced a new iPad Pro but not an entry-level iPad. So now, many are hoping to see it released this fall or in early 2022. There have been reports about a new entry-level iPad since the launch of the 10.2-inch iPad (eighth generation) in 2020. According to a leak by Twitter user @cozyplanes that has since been deleted, iPad 9 will be the cheapest iPad ever created with a predicted price of $299. Although we cannot confirm the reliability of the Tweet, the cost of a current entry-level iPad is already $299 with the Apple Store education discount.

A Larger, Lighter 10.5-Inch iPad with a Home Button
The ninth-generation iPad is also referred to as the iPad 10.5 due to its size according to TechRadar. It is supposedly going to be 0.3 inches bigger than the 10.2. According to CNBeta, a Chinese tech site, the new iPad will be thinner and lighter, despite being larger. They also claim that it will keep the Touch ID button despite many Apple products ditching it in their newer products.
Return to top
An A13 Bionic Chipset, 4 GB of RAM & 64 GB of Storage
The iPhone 11 phones came with A13 Bionic chips, and the ninth-generation iPad is expected to follow suit. The CNBeta leak also suggests that the iPad will have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage which is double the base storage of the eighth-generation iPad.
Return to top
iPad Mini Rumors
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the sixth-generation iPad mini will have thinner bezels and no Home button to make the current 7.9-inch display bigger. Since rumors are talking about an 8.5- to 9-inch display, the size of the actual device might also be a little bigger to provide a better experience for iPad mini fans.
Return to top
iPad Pro Rumors
Yes, we did just get a new iPad Pro, but people are already talking about the next one. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims that Apple is working on a new iPad Pro with wireless MagSafe charging. He also predicts that the 2022 iPad Pro will be able to reverse-charge other wireless devices.
In order to offer MagSafe charging, the new iPad Pro will need to have a glass back rather than the current aluminum enclosure. These potential changes will make the new iPad Pro look a little more like the newer iPhone models.
Since there are rumors about the MagSafe charger, there is also talk about a charging mat that can simultaneously charge multiple devices. Although Apple's AirPower project was canceled, the company is said to have something similar up its sleeve for the future. Who knows, maybe it will be able to charge the new iPad Pro as well!

iPadOS Beta: How to Install It & What to Expect
Can't wait for the shipping version of iPadOS 15? If you're an early adopter who'd like to get early access to Apple's new iPad operating system and give feedback on how it's working, you can install the public beta version of iPadOS 15 in July. In this guide we'll go over how to do it and whether it's the right decision for you.
iPadOS Beta
The following devices are capable of downloading and running iPadOS 15. If you're wondering, "What iPad do I have?" we have an article that goes over all the iPad generations.
* All iPad Pro models
* iPad Air 2 and later
* iPad 5th generation and later
* iPad mini 4 and later
How to Sign Up for Public iPad Beta Testing
You have the option to sign up for either iPadOS 15's public beta program or beta program for developers. In this guide, we'll be covering how to sign up for the public beta program. The developer beta is likely to be more unstable and have more bugs, and I would not recommend installing it on your primary device. Though the public iPadOS 15 beta is likely to be a more stable choice, part of the deal you make when you install it entails giving feedback to Apple, including on bugs and broken features. Before you install the public iPad beta, consider whether you're willing to deal with more bugs in your daily iPad use.
The Apple Beta Program signup process is fairly straightforward. To update your iPad to Apple's latest operating system, make sure to back up your device to iCloud or back up to your computer. If you haven't updated your Mac to Big Sur yet, you can back up to iTunes. After you've made your backup:
* Plug your device into power and make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi or a stable, wired internet connection.
* Visit the Apple Beta Program page and tap sign up, or sign in if you've previously participated with an earlier beta version of iPadOS.
* You’ll be prompted to sign in with your Apple ID and password.
* You'll be taken to a Guide for Public Betas. If you haven't downloaded a public beta before, scroll down, tap enroll your iPad, and follow the prompts.
* Follow the link provided or tap Download profile to download the configuration profile, then tap Allow.
* Open the Settings app.
* Tap More for Your iPad.
* Tap View Profile.
* Tap Install and enter your device passcode.
* Tap Install again.
* Open the Settings app and tap General, then Software Update.
* Tap Download and Install.
* Now you'll see a notification like the one in the image below, with a blue line indicating download progress.
* Once the new operating system is finished downloading, tap Install Now.
* A window comes up that informs you you'll need to restart your device; tap Restart.
* Your iPad will go to a black screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar; the device will reset once the update completes.
* You'll notice a new app called Feedback; this is where you can report bugs and glitches to Apple. Accept the terms, sign in with your Apple ID, and you're good to go!

Are AirPods Waterproof? The Ultimate Apple Device Poolside Guide
Warmer weather has us spending more time outside, and sometimes we bring our favorite devices along. But is your iPhone waterproof? What if you splash water on your Mac? Spilled water on Apple keyboard? Do you need a waterproof iPad case? Can you wear an Apple Watch in the pool? I'll answer all these questions and tell you how to dry your wet phone or other Apple device safely!

The Difference Between Waterproof & Water-Resistant
Before we dive into individual products, I'd like to answer a common question: "Is waterproof and water resistant the same?" The short answer is no. If something is waterproof, that means that it is literally impervious to water. What is water resistant? When something is water-resistant, that means that it can resist the penetration of water to some degree.
Keep in mind that devices are tested for water resistance when they are new and in perfect condition. Regular wear and tear, oils from human skin, cracks, and damage caused by drops can make a device vulnerable to water damage. To learn more about protecting your Apple devices, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

Are All Apple Devices Waterproof?
Unfortunately, no Apple product is waterproof, but that doesn't mean that your device isn't safe around water. Many Apple devices are water-resistant and safe when facing accidental spills and splashes. Other devices are not safe and can suffer permanent damage from minimal water exposure.
Return to top
Which Apple Devices Are Water-Resistant?
There are various levels of water resistance, and it is essential to know which products and models are safe by the pool or on the beach. These include iPhone 7 and later models, AirPods Pro, AirTags, most Apple Watches, and the HomePod Mini. They have different levels of water resistance, making some more prone to water damage than others.
Return to top
iPhone SE, iPhone 7 & Later Models
What iPhones are waterproof? None. However, the iPhone SE and all iPhones from iPhone 7s and later are water-resistant. The iPhone 7s has a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529 at a maximum depth of 1 meter (3.2 feet) for up to 30 minutes. Look on Apple’s website for the water resistance rating of your model and find out exactly what the numbers mean.
iPhone 12s have a rating of IP68 at a maximum depth of 6 meters (19.7 feet) for up to 30 minutes. However, even the newest iPhones aren't water-resistant enough to let you take underwater pictures. Read more about iPhones and the extent of their water resistance here).
But if you drop your phone in water or even in the toilet, you can safely dry and sanitize it. iPhone got wet? Follow these steps to remove water from your iPhone safely.
Return to top
AirPods Pro & Wired Headphones
While first-generation AirPods are not even water-resistant, AirPods Pros have a rating of IPX4. Are AirPods Pro waterproof? No, but they can get a little wet without getting damaged. This means that AirPods Pro can be worn to the gym because they are both sweat and splash resistant. To find out which AirPods you have, read this.
Apple wired headphones are also water-resistant. If you get your headphones or AirPods wet, Apple recommends that you use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the AirPods to remove as much water as possible. Do not use them while they are wet! Read this for step-by-step instructions on how to get water out of an AirPod.
Return to top
AirTags
Recently released AirTags have taken the world by storm, taking advantage of Apple's Find My network to help people keep track of their possessions. According to Apple, AirTags are as water-resistant as the iPhone SE, with a rating of IP67.
Officially, AirTags are splash, water, and dust resistant, plus they can spend up to 30 minutes underwater at a maximum depth of 1 meter (3.2 feet.) Longer exposure or greater depth can result in water damage. Plus, any regular wear and tear can negatively impact the water-resistance of AirTags.
Apple is known for downplaying the water resistance of its devices. According to CNET, AirTags are a lot more water-safe than they seem. Read more about the water-resistance of AirTags and get step-by-step directions on drying them.
Return to top
Apple Watch Series 2 or Later
According to Apple, all Apple Watch models are water-resistant. However, only Apple Series 2 or later can be safely used for swimming and certain water sports. The Apple Watch is Apple's most water-resistant device, and it is safe to use in various scenarios involving water.
Newer Apple Watch models come with a swimming workout option, and they have a Water Lock feature. This plays a sound that gets water out of speakers once unlocked. Discover which Apple Watch is best for swimmers and water sports here.
Return to top
HomePod Mini Speakers
HomePod Minis are the smaller, rounder versions of the original HomePod, which is discontinued but can still be purchased used. With their small size come several benefits, including water resistance! While you should never submerge your HomePod Mini speakers, they will survive a splash or two. If you decide to bring them outside for a pool party, try to keep them dry while enjoying your jam!
Return to top
Which Apple Devices Are Not Water Resistant?
Just because Apple downplays the water resistance of iPhones and AirTags doesn't mean that you should take risks with your devices. Most Apple devices are not water-resistant and don't even have a water resistance rating. The list includes iPads, MacBooks, Apple Pencils, Apple TV remotes, AirPods, Apple Magic Keyboard, and older iPhone and Apple Watch models.
Then there are iPods, HomePod speakers, iMacs, and Apple TVs. These are either less popular or not as likely to get as wet as the other Apple devices, but I thought I'd mention them too. Unsurprisingly, they are also not water-resistant.
Return to top
iPad, iPad Mini & iPad Pro
Is the new iPad Pro waterproof? No. People have been dreaming of a waterproof iPad for years, but unfortunately, no iPad is safe at the beach without a certified waterproof iPad case. None of the iPad models are water-resistant or even have water resistance ratings.
Even the new iPad Pro isn't water-resistant, and it doesn't even have a water resistance rating. The best way to keep your iPad safe from water damage is by using a certified waterproof iPad case. Check out the different waterproof iPad cases here, luckily; there are many options!
If an iPad gets water on it, it has to be wiped off immediately. Even the smallest droplet in the port or speaker can cause significant water damage. Take extra care when using an iPad anywhere that it might be exposed to water.
Return to top
MacBook Air & MacBook Pro
It can be tempting to bring your MacBook to the beach or even turn your bathtub into a temporary home office. Unfortunately, your MacBook is not water-resistant, and if any liquids get inside the ports, speakers, or keyboard, you may experience permanent water damage.
Having a silicone keyboard skin, such as the GhostCover Premium ($12.95) by UPPERCASE can help protect your device from unexpected spills. It is even possible to buy skins with beautiful designs, foreign keyboards, or common shortcuts.
When it comes to keeping your MacBook safe on the go, waterproof MacBook cases do exist. One great waterproof option is the Aqua Quest Storm Laptop Sleeve ($34.99), protecting your MacBook even if it ends up underwater. However, it has to be properly sealed and doesn't offer protection while the laptop is in use.
Another option is the Protective Laptop Case ($29.99) by Nacuwa. It can protect your MacBook from water and spills but cannot be submerged. Keeping your MacBook safe from water isn't easy, and it is safest to keep it away from water at all times.
Return to top
Apple Pencil
Although the Apple Pencil looks like it's well-sealed, it isn't waterproof or even water-resistant. If your Apple Pencil gets wet, do your best to dry it immediately and keep it off for a few days. Using a dry, lint-free cloth, air drying, or even placing the pencil in a bag of uncooked rice can help. However, it is best to take it directly to Apple for inspection, if possible. The best way to protect your Apple Pencil is by getting a waterproof iPad case that also protects the pencil, such as this Bstpro case ($39.99.)
Return to top
Apple TV & Apple TV Remote
Nothing makes watching TV or playing games better than good food and drinks. However, no model of Apple TV box or remote is water-resistant. There are a lot of ports and buttons that just don't mix well with liquids. If your box or Apple TV remote gets wet, you might be in trouble.
If your Apple TV box or remote gets wet, unplug and turn them off immediately and dry them gently with a dry lint-free cloth. Try to let them completely dry, leaving them out for a few days before attempting to use them again. If they don't work as they should contact Apple support directly.
Return to top
AirPods First & Second Generations & AirPods Max
There are no waterproof AirPods, but the original AirPods are not even water-resistant like the AirPods Pro. While it is possible to get a waterproof AirPod case cover, the AirPods themselves will not be safe if exposed to water.
AirPods Max are also not water resistant and there isn't any product that could protect them. Avoid exercising in them because even a drop of sweat could damage them. If you do get them wet, follow these steps to get your AirPods dry.
Return to top
Apple Magic Keyboards
Although Apple Magic Keyboards have been known to survive spills on occasion, they are not water-resistant. If you get any water on your keyboard, it is best to turn it off immediately and use a dry lint-free cloth to wipe it gently.
If liquids other than water spill on the keyboard, the chemicals can cause damage even if it isn't immediately apparent. It is best to contact Apple directly if this happens. You can add a layer of protection with a cover such as this Kuzo Silicone Skin ($8.99.)
Return to top
iPhone 6 & Earlier Models
Older iPhone models such as iPhone 6 and earlier are not water-resistant. Phones that aren't water-resistant at all can be damaged by water if splashed or even from extreme humidity in the air.
Consider keeping these older iPhone models out of the bathroom while you are showering or bathing to be safe. If you want to use it somewhere where it might get wet, consider getting a waterproof case or pouch.
Return to top
First Generation & Series 1 Apple Watches
The newer Apple Watch models are as water-resistant as any Apple devices get. While you can swim in the Series 2 or later, Apple Watch first generation and Series 1 are prone to water damage. According to Apple, you shouldn't worry about splashes, for example, while you are watching your hands. However, they cannot be submerged at all.
Return to top
iPods
These music players may be a little outdated, but that doesn't mean they're obsolete. If you still have and love your iPod, make sure to keep it dry. Similar to iPads, iPods are not at all water-resistant. If you wish to use one somewhere where water exposure might occur, use a waterproof case. If you have a universal pouch for an iPad or iPhone, it could be perfect for your iPod as well!
Return to top
Original HomePod Speaker
Some people like to bring their HomePod speakers outdoors in the summer, and that's just fine. But unlike HomePod Minis, the HomePod is not water-resistant. That means that even a splash of water can cause permanent water damage, so be extra vigilant when using these near liquids.
Return to top
iMacs
Few people pack their iMac to bring to the beach or to use by the pool, but there are other ways for your computer to get wet. Even the new iMac is not at all water-resistant, so avoid getting it wet at all costs! There aren't any cases or covers to protect your iMac from water, so all you can do is keep liquids away and make sure to close any windows near your desk in case of rainfall.
Return to top
Does Apple’s Standard Warranty Cover Water Damage
Apple products come with a one-year limited warranty that includes software problems and damage that isn't user-caused. Unfortunately, the official Apple water damage policy is strict, and it isn't covered under the standard warranty.
AppleCare, on the other hand, might be able to cover the damage. You need to purchase AppleCare at or soon after purchase, and damage coverage depends on circumstances. There is also a fee for most repairs; however, it is usually significantly cheaper than repairs that aren't covered. You can read more about AppleCare here.
Return to top
So are iPads waterproof? No, but that's a trick question. While no Apple device is certified waterproof, many are water-resistant to a certain extent. Devices such as most Apple Watches, AirTags, newer iPhone models, AirPods Pro, and even HomePod Minis can be exposed to water without damage.
iPads, MacBooks, Apple Pencils, Apple Magic Keyboards, AirPods, Apple TVs and remotes, AirPods, and Apple Watches and iPhones are better off left at home unless they have waterproof cases. Plus, iPods, HomePod speakers, and iMacs are also best left dry!

Apple TV Color Calibration: How to Use Apple's New Color Balance Feature
What is the best color setting for a TV? Whether you've asked this question before, or it's never crossed your mind, color balance is a key part of one's enjoyment of a television. Not only can it ensure your personal comfort by making sure things aren't too far on one spectrum or another, but the correct color balance can also ensure you're watching exactly what the show or movie creators had in mind. Starting with iOS14.5, tvOS offers a color balance option. All you need is your iPhone. TV color balance has never been easier!

How to Use tvOS's Color Balance Feature
This nifty new trick uses your iPhone's sensors to see if your Apple TV's color is correctly balanced. It automatically adjusts the color balance so it's right according to what the iPhone sees; but if you don't like it, you can choose not to use that setting.
What You'll Need for TV Color Balance
In order for this to work, you need to make sure your gear meets all the requirements:
* An iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X or newer)
* An Apple TV or Apple TV 4K. This doesn't work on other types of Smart TVs
* iOS 14.5 or later
* TvOS 15.5 or later
How to Adjust Your Apple TV's Color Balance with Your iPhone
* On your Apple TV, open the Settings app.
* Select Video & Audio.
* Scroll down and select Color Balance under Calibration.
* Tap the notification that appears on your iPhone screen.
* Tap Continue.
* Turn your iPhone to face your TV.
* Hold your iPhone up about one inch from your Apple TV so your iPhone screen is facing your TV screen. You will see a guide on the screen for how to align your iPhone.
* A progress bar will load as the screen adjusts. Be careful not to move your iPhone during this process as it may cause it to restart.
* Once it's complete, select View Results to see the color balanced version versus the original.
* Choose which you prefer.
* If you choose Use Balanced, it will now say Balanced next to Color Balance in Video and Audio settings.
This feature is unavailable with Dolby vision, and if you see the notification "Not Required" when you select Color Balance in your settings, it means you do not need to color balance your TV. MacOS Monterey Blurs Line Between iPad & Mac
The new macOS Monterey is further blurring the line between your Mac and your iPad. A new Universal Control feature Apple announced at its WWDC keynote allows you to control a Mac and iPad simultaneously using the same keyboard and mouse and drag and drop files easily between devices. Aside from opening up this hybrid work option, macOS includes new iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 features, like media sharing in FaceTime and notification controls tailored for different activities. Other macOS updates include redesigned tabs in Safari and an organization option called Tab Groups, which lets you sort your tabs into—you guessed it—groups that you can revisit later. And let's not forget your Mac is now an AirPlay destination!

As macOS moves closer in functionality to iOS and iPadOS, we find ourselves questioning whether Apple is setting itself up for a battle between the Mac and iPad that one will eventually lose. After all, if the devices become too similar, what's the point of having them both? Currently, the iPad can't really replace a laptop, and the MacBook still can't compete with many of our favorite iPad features, most notably its portability. But as macOS Monterey takes a step closer to its mobile counterparts, change may be on the horizon. Let's dive in and take a closer look at everything coming to macOS Monterey.
MacOS Monterey Availability
A public beta of macOS Monterey will be available in July, and the full version will arrive in the fall. A developer beta is already live on the site.
MacOS Monterey Compatibility
MacOS Monterey is compatible with:
* Late 2015 and later iMac
* 2017 and later iMac Pro
* Early 2015 and later MacBook Air
* Early 2015 and later MacBook Pro
* 2019 and later Mac Pro
* Late 2014 and later Mac Mini
* 2015 and later MacBook
* Late 2013 and later Mac Pro
Universal Control
As opposed to using your iPad as an external monitor for your Mac (which you could already do using Sidecar), Universal Control is a new feature that allows you to use your Mac and iPad as two full devices that work together. For example, if you want to add a video clip from your iPad into a movie you are creating on your Mac, instead of transferring it the usual way, you can just drag and drop, as if it was already on the Mac. Your keyboard and mouse and/or trackpad work for both devices, so you can even use trackpad gestures for quick actions on your iPad. Best of all, there's no setup required, so all you have to do is move your mouse off your computer screen toward your iPad, and the mouse will automatically move over to it. This is a super helpful feature for those who already have an iPad and a Mac as part of their regular setup. We'll have to see, however, how easily you can drag and drop different file types between devices. Still, the potential here is big, especially considering Apple may want to be looking for ways to integrate the iPad and Mac in a way where they support, instead of replace each other. Getting us to use more than one device at a time may be Apple's way of making sure we invest in both devices for years to come, instead of allowing one to replace the other.
Note: Universal Control currently works with one Mac and one iPad, unless you have an M1 MacBook Pro, which will support more than two devices.
Safari Update: Tab Groups & Web Extensions
Tab Redesign & Groups
Safari is getting a cosmetic makeover, with redesigned tabs that are rounder and less intrusive. More exciting is the web browser's new feature called Tab Groups, which lets you organize tabs like bookmarks—keeping them off the screen to reduce clutter but easily accessible when you need them. I'm horrible at separating my work and personal internet browsing and even worse at closing tabs when I think I might need them again. It's too easy to open open work tabs when I should be relaxing or sort through tabs of vacation ideas when I'm looking for the work I did. Tab Groups is a promising solution to these self-inflicted issues. Extra sorting doesn't always feel like a time saver, so the success of this feature will largely depend on how easy and intuitive it is to use.
AirPlay Comes to Mac
You can finally AirPlay to your Mac! While you could already stream from your Mac to your Apple TV or iPad using AirPlay, you can now use it to cast from other devices onto your Mac. This feature opens up the door to use our Mac screens as a TV (which I've been inclined to do anyway) or use our Mac's speakers to play music instead of relying on our iPhones. Rather than an exciting feature, this update underlines the strange fact that it was missing until now, but either way, it's a solid addition.
Create Shortcuts on Mac
Shortcuts haven't typically been the most popular feature of the iPhone and iPad, at least among our team, as they can be complicated to set up and not as simple and time-saving as they seem. That being said, Shortcuts on Mac feel promising. Perhaps it's because we're more willing to invest time into streamlining our experience on Macs, or maybe it's because it's easier to tackle complex tasks on a desktop, but whatever it is, I will be trying this new-to-Mac feature out. For those unfamiliar, Shortcuts let you trigger a sequence of actions using one command.
Other Goodies
Here's a quick list of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 features coming to macOS Monterey.
* FaceTime Updates: FaceTime now includes Spatial Audio that mimicks the sound distribution you experience when talking with several people. You can also use Portrait mode in FaceTime and enjoy Voice Isolation features to keep background noises out of your call.
* Focus: Focus is a new feature of iOS 15 that lets you set up customized Do Not Disturb settings across your devices for when you want to ignore notifications, such as if you are working or in a social situation.
* Notification Changes: Notifications can be overwhelming, but with macOS Monterey, you'll be able to do things like mute notifications based on smart suggestions, see time sensitive notifications, and more.
* Quick Note: Quick Note lets you jot something down no matter the app you're in and can be set up as a hot corner, so all you have to do is move your mouse to a corner of your screen to jot something down without leaving the app or webpage you're using.
* Live Text: Your device can now read text from photos! This helps with searching, tagging, and even calling phone numbers displayed in an image.
* Maps: Maps has a whole host of new features including directions based on scans of your area (only available in a handful of cities), an interactive globe, and improved search.
* Privacy: MacOS Monterey has many new features focused around privacy.
* iCloud+: iCloud+ offers additional privacy features to anyone with a paid iCloud storage plan.

WatchOS 8 Focuses on Health Features, Lacks Major Changes
WatchOS 8 is coming to an Apple Watch near you this fall! This much-anticipated software update, announced at Apple's WWDC keynote event, was met with sighs at the focus on revamping the Breathe app. While the improved Health features come with exciting possibilities, the spattering of minor core features, including more flexible text writing, AirTags on the watch's FindMy app, and a new Portrait watch face raise more questions than whoops of excitement.

Making Health & Fitness a Priority
The Apple Watch may be a smartwatch, but it is also a leading fitness tracker. WatchOS 8 brings new ways to track our health and adds two popular workouts to the mix. Several other updates also seem to indirectly point to a potential future addition of a mental health metric. These include turning the Breathe app into the Mindfulness app and using breathing to determine other health factors such as the new respiratory sleep tracking.
Improved Sleep Tracking with Respiratory Rate Data
Many have felt that Apple Watch's sleep tracking needed an upgrade, and here it is! With watchOS 8, users will use the built-in accelerometer to measure the wearer's respiratory rate while they sleep. This can help provide more insight into overall health by detecting irregular breathing and conditions such as sleep apnea. This new metric can be shared with loved ones and doctors through HealthKit.
Walking Steadiness for Better Mobility Tracking
Although it was announced as an iPhone feature, Walking Steadiness is an exciting new way to track mobility. It will measure the speed and evenness of the wearer's gait to assess their risk of falling. Just like other health and fitness Trends, it will be possible to see improvement or decline over time. We assume that data from the Apple Watch can help improve the accuracy of this new feature, but this hasn't been confirmed by Apple.
New Tai Chi & Pilates Workouts
The Apple Watch can track various workouts and determine how many calories you burn based on your speed or frequency of reps, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and more. Pilates is a popular workout that users have been missing in their Workout app, while Tai Chi is excellent for reducing stress and improving both mental and physical health. Until they become available with the watchOS 8 update, the only way users can track these workouts is by using the Other workout option.
The Breathe App Becomes the Mindfulness App
Let's be honest; being reminded to breathe when one is stressed is like being told to calm down. That being said, deep breathing is said to have a significant impact on your health on a psychological and physiological level.
Apple hopes that the new app will help people recognize the importance of finding small moments in their day to be more mindful. This watchOS 8 update will feature an enhanced breathing experience and a reflection feature. Reflect offers a prompt to give you a minute of intentional focus. It may suggest that you recall something that you are grateful for or similar invitations to a positive state of mind.
In addition to these new features, each session comes with beautiful new animations for a better visual experience. Plus, it will offer tips to help users get more from these short but impactful exercises.
We are skeptical about Apple's claims about the popularity of the existing Breathe app. Even though it is meant to offer a sense of calmness, not all users enjoy reminders to breathe, which seem to come at the worst (or best?) times. Luckily, there is an option to opt-out of receiving these alerts if they cause more harm than improvement to your mental health.
Artist Spotlight Series & Jeanette Jenkins on Apple Fitness Plus
Apple Fitness Plus is Apple's fitness service that was created entirely around the Apple Watch. WatchOS 8 introduced Picture in Picture support as well as new filtering options, with new flexibility when it comes to pausing or resuming in-progress workouts.
Plus, the WWDC keynote event announced a new series of workouts by Jeanette Jenkins coming next month. Finally, there will also be a new way to listen to music while exercising with the Artist Spotlight Series that lets you binge entire playlists by Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Alicia Keys during your workouts.
Better Device Integration & Productivity
The Apple ecosystem is already vast, allowing integration between different devices to make it easier to work smarter rather than harder. WatchOS 8 comes with several exciting features that make the way your Apple devices interact even more seamless. This includes setting statuses to match customizable notification modes across all devices, more access via Apple Wallet, a redesigned Home app, and the ability to find AirTags on your watch's FindMy app.
For better productivity, we will see features such as a more flexible way to send texts, edit them even in dictation mode, and the ability to set multiple timers. Plus, the Weather app will help you be better prepared with severe weather notifications and next-hour precipitation data.
Focus: The Improved Do Not Disturb Mode
When we turn Do Not Disturb mode on, we get fewer distractions but might miss important notifications. Focus is a set of tools that helps tailor your settings based on your current activity. This could mean limiting social media or game app notifications while you work or work emails while you play. Plus, there's a preset Fitness mode that helps you get your sweat on in peace.
Open (Literal) Doors with Apple Wallet
Today, the Apple Wallet app can "carry'" your credit cards, limited transit passes, and tickets to Disneyland. Plus Apple Watch Series 6 lets you add digital car keys thanks to Ultra Wideband support. The watchOS 8 update, however, makes it even easier to leave your physical wallet at home.
Users will now be able to add card keys to their home, office, and hotel room, as well as a driver's license or state ID (in participating states in the US only.) Plus, people in Hong Kong, Japan, and select mainland China and US cities will be able to add transit cards.
These new features are exciting because it makes travel a lot faster and easier. However, there are security concerns; plus, it will be a while before hotels, locks, and governments embrace virtual keys. Some might never get there, making this an exclusive feature that few people can actually enjoy.
A Redesigned Home App
Our homes are getting smarter, and it's about time that the Home app catches up. This upcoming update promises to offer more convenient access to accessories and scenes in your home. Changes include the ability to see live footage from HomeKit-enabled cameras directly on your wrist and the ability to broadcast a message via the Intercom function. Plus, Apple Watch users will be able to control devices per room, just like in the iPhone app.
Use FindMy to Find Your Items, Including AirTags
FindMy has helped Apple users keep track of their belongings, but with minimal support for the Apple Watch. The watchOS 8 update makes it possible to find items, such as AirTags, directly from your watch. Especially with the upcoming support for AirPods, this is an exciting update that will help us spend less time searching.
Easier & Quicker Texting in Messages
Being able to pick between dictation, Scribble, and sending emoji is great. But being able to do all three at once is even better! The upcoming update makes it so much easier to get your point across by letting you use Scribble, dictation, and emoji all within the same message. Plus, dictated messages can now be edited using Scribble for better clarity and fewer typos.
Finally, a Contacts App for Apple Watch
The watchOS 8 update makes it easier to see all your contacts for smoothing browsing, adding, and editing. This app makes it easier to stay in touch, and it makes sharing contacts possible without picking up your iPhone.
A New Personalized Apple Watch Face & Photos
The many existing designs of Apple Watch faces make it possible to customize your watch and make it your own. After all, your watch is an accessory as much as it is a supercomputer. The Portraits watch face makes it possible to put a portrait-style photo on your watch face. It takes advantage of the multiple layers to create depth that the Digital Crown can control.
In addition to seeing photos on your watch face, you will also be able to see memories and Featured photos directly in the Photos app on your Apple Watch. This will also make it easier to share photos with your Contacts via the Messages and Mail apps.
The WWDC keynote event marketed the ability to view more photos on your watch as a mental health perk. While we don't argue that looking at the faces of our loved ones makes us smile, we are skeptical about how this will impact battery life or the storage on our watches.
Other Updates: Accessibility, Always-On & Sharing Music
The scope of watchOS 8 changes is impressive, even if none of the features are particularly major. Besides new health features, better integration, and improved productivity, some other notable changes make owning an Apple Watch even more worth it.
One-Arm Hand Gestures
Recognizing that Apple Watch users may have upper-body limb differences, AssistiveTouch makes it possible to use your Apple Watch with just one arm. Simple hand gestures will be able to control the watch without the need to touch the display. This will be possible using built-in motion sensors and an onscreen motion pointer.
Always-On Option
The Always-On feature might not be the best for battery life, but it is great for making the most of apps. This will effect apps such as Maps, Mindfulness, Now Playing, Phone, Podcast, Stopwatch, timers, Voice Memos, and others.
Sharing Music with Contacts
Music is always better when enjoyed with others. With a redesigned Music app, it is possible to share songs, albums, and playlists with your friends and family via Messages and Mail. This can be done directly on your Apple Watch, which means that you can listen to a suggested song via Bluetooth headphones while you are out and about!
The WWDC keynote event has once again thrown a lot of new and exciting information at Apple users. In the upcoming months, developers and the public will be able to use the beta version of this update, which will become officially available this fall. Although the watchOS 8 doesn't seem to have any dramatic changes, there are so many ways that core functions will become more user-friendly and better integrated. While I am not jumping with joy, I am nodding my head in approval of these upcoming changes.
