Macs are our main hub for work and entertainment. We need to have gear and accessories to keep them charged, protected from accidents, and have components that add the most to their value. We've put together some of our favorite Mac docs, charging ports, adaptors, and even a headphone stand in our 2020 Buyer's Guide to Mac accessories. You'll find items from Brydge, Avantree, Anker, and more, offering a range of sturdy, innovative, and classic products for your Mac.  Related: Buyer's Guide 2020: Apple Watch Gear  Brydge MacBook Vertical Dock ($169.99) This ingenious device has transformed my home office. The sleek Brydge Vertical Dock allows you to neatly insert your MacBook and gain instant access to any peripherals you want to keep permanently connected. My sound system, monitor, keyboard, webcam, and hard drives are all connected to the two high-speed Thunderbolt 3 ports. When I want to work outside, I just remove my MacBook from the dock and go! Space gray finish exactly matches the MacBook and has a minimalist look that matches the Apple aesthetic. This dock saves a ton of desk space and keeps wires out of view.   Avantree Universal Wooden Aluminum Headphone Stand ($29.99) This headphone stand offers a smart way to keep your workspace clean and tidy. It’s also an effective way to protect your headphones long-term. This stand has a simple but sturdy build that grips the surface beneath it and a built-in tray for your headphones’ cable. If you’re looking for simple ways to neaten up your workspace, this classy headphone stand will make an excellent addition to your desktop.   Anker PowerExpand 7-in-2 USB-C PD Direct Adaptor ($59.99) This adaptor completely makes up for the lack of ports on the MacBook, giving you two classic USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, an HDMI port, plus an SD and Micro SD card reader. The sleek style and aluminum finish perfectly complement the look and feel of your MacBook. It’s a perfect fix for Mac connectivity, whether it’s for your home office or travel.   ViewSonic VP2785-2K Monitor ($612.99) This 27-inch monitor offers a high-resolution image that meets the high demands of graphic designers and video editors. What I love most about this monitor is that it connects via USB-C and even charges my MacBook while I’m using it, eliminating the need for a power cable to my laptop. Additionally, it has a variety of extra ports that allow me to connect my keyboard and webcam without the need for extra cables and adapters. These connectivity features are a huge perk for MacBook users. Note that you will need a special USB-C cable that transmits video in order to connect via USB-C.   OWC Envoy Pro EX SSD Hard Drive (Starting at $99) I didn’t know I could love an external hard drive this much! The OWC Envoy Pro EX is a beautiful piece of tech with a polished look and feel. Solid-state hard drives use flash-based memory, which performs faster than traditional hard drives. The casing is nearly indestructible and it’s backed by a three-year warranty. It comes in a variety of capacities, allowing you to choose the right size for you. This drive is compatible with the iPad Pro, allowing you to move and back up photos, videos, and files between your Apple devices.   RAVPower PD Pioneer GaN Charger ($39.99) This two-port wall charger is faster than any other I’ve used. It can simultaneously charge my MacBook and iPad Pro faster than the Apple chargers included with my devices. The form factor is smaller and more portable than the one that comes with a MacBook, and, with the multiple ports, it gives you one less item to pack when traveling. Buyer's Guide 2020: Smart Home

If you're in the market to buy your first smart home device or adding to your collection of smart home accessories, our 2020 Buyer's Guide has lots of excellent options for you to look at. Whether you are searching for a smart doorbell, a full smart home starter pack, or a laundry sensor, we've evaluated the best protection, safety, and energy-saving accessories for your home.  Homekit compatible? HomeKit is Apple’s smart home device management framework. It lets you control compatible smart home products in concert through the Home app, which comes preinstalled on your iPhone. Of the products listed, only the Ecobee is HomeKit-compatible, but others such as the Eufy Doorbell could support HomeKit soon. Related: Buyer's Guide 2020: Mac Gear   Eufy Video Doorbell 2K ($159.99) Secure and convenient, the Eufy Video Doorbell takes the stress out of unannounced visitors. Your phone alerts you when someone is at the door and provides both a live stream and video playback of your doorstep. Whether you’re happily accepting delivery or trying to avoid canvassers, you’ll be able to see who is at your door in real-time. The chime is loud enough to get your attention but not intrusive. The setup is involved and you’ll need to make sure your existing doorbell wiring can provide enough power, but once installed it’s easy to use.   Wyze Smart Home Starter Pack ($99) If you’re new to home automation and looking for an affordable start, this is the way to go. A camera detects motion, sound, and alarms so it can alert you when something is amiss. The bulbs allow you to customize brightness levels, colors, and the schedule of any lamp in your home. Plugs allow you to turn any small appliance into a smart one by timing when it turns off and on and providing remote control. A sensor detects open doors or windows. Setup is easy and, best of all, one app manages all the devices.   SmartDry Wireless Laundry Sensor ($49.99) Dryers are one of the most energy-consuming appliances a home can have. Fortunately, this sensor can help you cut down on drying time by sending alerts to your phone when your clothes are dry, often well before your machine automatically turns off. The sensor also monitors the temperature of your clothes to keep delicates from overheating. Thanks to this sensor, I often save a full half-hour of drying time!   Ecobee SmartThermostat (Starting at $149) A favorite from last year, the Ecobee SmartThermo- stat is still one of the best smart home options out there. With the ability to control your home temperature from your phone, you don’t have to worry about if you left the AC on and you can start warming your house before you arrive home. Additional sensors allow you to customize temperatures by room (the pack comes with one extra but you can purchase more), and Alexa capabilities offer voice control and other fun features like music playing, web searches, and even witty rapport.   TP-Link Kasa Smart Light Switch/Dimmer ($17.99) The Kasa Smart Switch offers lighting control and customization at one of the lowest prices points out there. Replace any switch in your house and enjoy the atmosphere, scheduling, and remote access. Fade outlets you leave a room without stumbling in the dark, and the different levels of light let you customize the look and feel of any room. Voice control is available with Alexa or Google Assistant, and installation is easy and quick. For a seamless entry into the world of home automation, this switch is the way to go. Why Is Location Search Not Working in Photos on iPhone?

Location Services on your iPhone lets Apple apps (like the Camera app) and third-party apps (like your banking app) figure out where you're located while using your phone. When iPhone Photo Location Services is turned on and you take a photo, it'll tag your photo with your current location. This way, you can search through the photos that you took on your vacation to Bora Bora or in your own hometown. Location Services uses Wi-Fi or cellular data plus GPS services to find your location. If you're connected to data or Wi-Fi but your photos aren't being tagged, we have a few simple fixes for you to try. Here's how to get Photos Location Services working again. Related: How to Photo Search by Location on Your iPhone What's in This Article: * How Do I Get Photo Location on iPhones? * Allow the Camera App to Access Your Location * Test Your iPhone Photos Location Services * Power Cycle Your iPhone to Reset Location for Photos * Create a Help Ticket with Apple Support How Do I Get Photo Location on iPhone? Fortunately, the iPhone photos location feature is included on all devices using iOS 8 and later. There's no need to download an additional app. So let's find out where to find photo location and how to turn it on. Allow the Camera App to Access Your Location For iPhone photo Location Services to work, you have to enable it. This includes turning the service on as well as giving permission to each app that you want it to access. Follow these steps to turn Location Services on and grant permission to your Camera app. * Open the Settings app. * Scroll down and tap on Privacy.   * Tap on Location Services. * If Location Services is off, the toggle will be gray. If that's the case, tap the gray toggle to turn Location Services on. If the toggle is already green, move on to the next step.   * Stay in Location Services and scroll down until you see Camera. * Tap on Camera. * Select While Using the App. If you're using iOS 10 or earlier, choose Always. The photos you take from this point on should have a geolocation tag on them. However, previous photos won't be tagged unless both Location Services and the Camera app were enabled at the time they were taken. Test Your iPhone Photos Location Services To test if Location Services is now working in Photos: * Take a photo with your iPhone camera in the Camera app. * Open your Photos app and find the photo you just took by tapping Library, located at the bottom of the screen. * At the top of the photo, you should see your current location. Power Cycle Your iPhone to Reset Location for Photos If you experience your photos not showing location on iPhone pictures after enabling Location Services and granting permission to the Camera app, you can try turning your iPhone off and on again. This often works to reset apps and tools on your iPhone. Create a Help Ticket With Apple Support It's possible that you might have to turn to Apple Support if you're using iOS 14. Soon after the release of this iOS update, iPhone users began reporting that their location search wasn't working in Photos. Users added that Apple said the problem is due to a bug and its developers are working on a fix.  Topics: How-ToCameraLocation TrackingPhotosSettingsMaster your iPhone in one minute a day: Sign up here to get our FREE Tip of the Day delivered right to your inbox.

Why Do My Apps Keep Crashing? How to Solve iPhone App Crashing Issues in iOS 14

Do iPhone apps keep crashing on you? From the easiest and most practical solutions to a little more time-consuming but necessary updates, our guide helps you figure out what to do when iPhone apps keep crashing. We’ve put together a series of solutions to fix app crashing issues and prevent them from happening in future. Follow the steps below and, with any luck, your iPhone apps will run smoothly once again. Related: How to Quickly Update All Your Apps at Once on Your iPhone  What’s in This Article: * Restart Your iPhone * Update to the Latest iOS * Close App in App Switcher * Update Your Apps * Delete & Reinstall App Apps Keep Crashing? Restart Your iPhone When apps keep crashing on your iPhone, one of the easiest ways to fix the problem is by restarting your iPhone. This can help clear active processes that may be interfering with app function so that when you start your iPhone back up again, the apps are working. It's the simplest option to try, so it's the best place to start.  * Restart an iPhone X or later * Restart an earlier iPhone (except the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus) * Restart an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus iPhone Apps Keep Crashing? Update to the Latest iOS Checking your iOS software is a good way to resolve app crashing issues on your iPhone. Here are the steps to make sure that you are running the latest version of iOS: * Open the Settings app. * Scroll down and tap on General.   * Tap on Software Update. * You will either see a message telling you which software version you have and that it's up to date, or you'll see an available update. If you have an update available, go ahead and update your device. Remember that you’ll need to connect to Wi-Fi and plug in your iPhone to complete the update. If Apps Keep Crashing, Close Them in the App Switcher Closing apps in the switcher reloads them and often fixes the crashing problem. Go through your App Switcher and close out the affected apps (or close everything out if you want to start fresh), and then open the app in question again to see if it will function properly. Here's how: * On an iPhone with a Home button, double click the Home button to see the pages of open apps. * On an iPhone without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold briefly, then release to open the App Switcher. * Look through the open apps to find the one you want to close. * Swipe up on the app to close it. Why Do My Apps Keep Crashing? Update Your Apps To keep apps from crashing, it's best to keep them updated. To check for app updates: * Open the App Store app. * Tap your profile in the upper-right corner. * Scroll down to check your pending updates. * Tap Update to the right of the app name or tap Update All to bring all of your current apps up to date on your device. Delete and Reinstall Apps That Keep Crashing If other solutions don’t work, deleting the app and reinstalling it can also stop the app from crashing. Just keep in mind that deleting apps could cause loss of data for apps that aren’t account-based like Facebook or Google.  To Delete an App That Was Crashing: * Press and hold the app icon. * Tap Remove App.   * Tap Delete App. * On the next menu tap Delete.  To Reinstall an App That Was Crashing: * Open the App Store app. * Tap the Search icon in the bottom-right corner.   * Tap into the search bar and type the name of the app you need to reinstall, then tap Search.   * Tap the iCloud icon next to the app to reinstall it. *  When download is complete, tap the Open button if you'd like to open the app. Hopefully these tips have resolved your problems with apps crashing. Now you can enjoy uninterrupted use of your iPhone apps without worrying about losing your place in a book, being interrupted in the middle of a bank transaction, or having your game progress lost. Missing the App Store Icon on Your iPhone? 3 Ways to Get It Back

If your App Store icon is missing and you’re wondering how to restore it, we’ve got great news for you. A missing App Store icon on iPhone doesn’t mean you deleted the app. While there are other native apps that you can delete, the App Store is not one of them. Our guide will show you several ways to find and bring back your missing App Store icon, so you can download and update your apps once again. Related: How to Find Hidden or Missing Apps on Your iPhone What’s in This Article: * No App Store Icon on iPhone? Get Help from Search. * How Do I Get the App Store on My iPhone? Restore Your Home Screen. * App Store App Disappeared from Your Home Screen? Restrictions May Be the Cause. No App Store Icon on iPhone? Get Help from Search One of the common causes for a missing App Store icon is that it’s inside a folder on your phone or hidden in the App Library. Rather than looking through each of your folders, using the Search tool is an easier way to find the misplaced icon: * From the middle of your Home screen, swipe down to access the Search feature. * Type App Store in the Search field. This should reveal the App Store in your search results. * Next to the App Store search result, you'll see where the app is located. Mine, for example, is located in my "Extras" folder.   Restore Your Home Screen to Get App Store Back on Your iPhone If your App Store didn’t show up in your search results, the next option is to restore your Home Screen to its default settings. It should be easier for you to find the App Store icon once it’s back to its original location: * Open the Settings app. * Scroll down and tap on General.   * Scroll all the way down and tap on Reset. * Select Reset Home Screen Layout.   * Tap Reset Home Screen to confirm that you want to reset your home screen to its factory default. * The Home Screen will be reverted to its default layout, and you should see the App Store icon restored. App Store App Disappeared from Your Home Screen? Check Restrictions If your App Store icon is still missing after searching for it and restoring your home screen, it’s likely due to restrictions on your phone. Whether you placed these controls by choice or accidentally, it’s easy to change them back to let you access your App Store once again. * Open the Settings app. * Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.   * In the Screen Time menu, select Content & Privacy Restrictions. * Tap on iTunes & App Store Purchases.   * If Installing Apps is set to “Don’t Allow”, tap on it, and select Allow.   * Go back one screen. If Deleting Apps is set to “Don’t Allow”, tap on it, and select Allow.   * When you go back to your Home Screen, you should see your App Store icon once again. Having access to your App Store icon is important. It allows you to download new apps and lets you keep your current apps updated. Once you’ve restored this handy icon, make a note of its location and your phone’s restrictions to ensure easy access to your App Store in future. Review: Neabot NoMo Robot Vacuum with Self-Emptying Dustbin

I have reviewed a number of robot vacuums over the years and it looks like the folks at Neabot have done as as well. They have learned a number of lessons and launched a Kickstarter for their Neabot NoMo Hands-Free Robot Vacuum ($499). I rarely write about crowdfunded projects, but this is a real product and Neabot sent me a review unit to try. The only thing I didn't get to try was the free companion mobile app that promises to let you control the path of the vacuum. The app wasn't ready in time for my review. I was impressed with the Smart Mapping capabilities. My house is about 2,200 square feet and most of that is on the first level, where I tested the Neabot. Impressively, it mapped the entire floor in about an hour and on a single charge. I closed off the laundry room, bathroom, and my carpeted bedroom, but it was still about 1,000 square feet. When it was done, it returned to the base station, automatically, and recharged itself. That's pretty common for high-end robot vacuums, but the really neat thing is that it transfers the dust and dirt it picked up from the robot to the canister. This allows for up to 4 weeks before you need to empty the canister's dust bag. There is a HEPA filter (and a spare in the box) which can be cleaned under running water. The Neabot is indeed noisy but my small (seven pound) dog was mostly curious and not exactly scared of it. Still, I would recommend trying to let it do its thing when you're not trying to watch TV or listen to music. Until you've got it fully mapped and on a schedule, you might want to babysit it, as I found it would try to ingest loose cables and a small carpet that my dog rests on. Again, I didn't have access to the app, but that would have allowed me to specify areas that are off-limits. There's also a handheld remote control for some limited features. Pros * Smart Mapping and Returns to Base to Charge * Transfers dust and dirt to home base canister for easy removal * Washable HEPA filter * App is promising * Handheld remote control Cons * Noisy * Keep it away from loose cords, light rugs Final Verdict The Neabot Robot Vacuum is about as intelligent as a robot vacuum can get, and the app promises to make it smarter. Unlike Hue's standard lightstrips, the Play Gradient variant is a thick and rubbery, almost snake-like beast that is designed to withstand many hours of multicolor bright light responses. It took me about 20 minutes to measure, mount, and thread the lightstrip on the back of my TV just right so that it was well hidden once the TV was properly wall-mounted. If you intend to do the same, I advise that the wall behind the TV has a four-plug power plate to accommodate the additional electrical components. It will also take some effort along with Velcro straps or tape to hide the rather large lightstrip power brick behind the TV. Once installed, the lightstrip connects to the rest of the Hue network via the required and separately purchased Hue Bridge ($59.99). This control unit is available separately or comes bundled in a couple of different Hue Starter Kits. Since my home was already outfitted with several Hue electrical products, I was able to use my existing Bridge to easily connect the Gradient Lightstrip via the free Philips Hue iOS app. Once connected and categorized in the Hue app, the lightstrip's color and brightness can be manipulated via the app's color wheel representation and brightness slider bar. By itself, this rear TV-mounted lightstrip is an expensive and rather unexciting attachment. If all you wanted was a way to augment the outline of your TV, you could spend less than half the cost of the Play Gradient variant for Philips' standard lightstrips.  But the Gradient Lightstrip was designed to be a much more dynamic, high-powered interactive fixture. In order to take full advantage of what the lightstrip is capable of, it needs to take its lighting commands from the Hue Play HDMI Sync Box ($229.99).  On the surface, the Sync Box looks like an expensive four-port HDMI cable switching box. While it does indeed serve that purpose, the real magic that this black box delivers is the ability to identify the color gradients being emitted by the source signal and sending those gradient values in real-time to the gradient lighting defined in the separate free Hue Sync app. The app can control all aspects of the Sync Box, from turning it on and setting the HDMI input to automatically configuring it to activate lighting whenever a input signal is detected to setting the brightness and intensity of lighting configured in the zoned entertainment environment. I understand the need to create a standalone app for the Sync box, but it still would have been more convenient to include its features in the base Hue app, similar to the way Elgato maintains its Eve for HomeKit home automation app. So after spending nearly five hundred dollars and a couple of hours meticulously installing and configuring the Hue Play setup, is the augmented entertainment lighting experience with the money and time? Honestly, I was rather skeptical at first given that it's just a fancy light. But after firing up an high-octane action movie on my Apple TV and setting the Hue Sync Box to the HDMI port to the one the Apple TV was connect to, my man cave exploded in light. It. Was. AWESOME! I had no idea that the simple addition of lighting could heighten my movie watching experience to such a powerful degree. It was almost like wearing 3D glasses without the flickering headache and discomfort associated with 3D. The scenes seem to leap out around the TV with each scene change. I thought it would get distracting after the initial honeymoon of a new toy wore off, but after hours watching movies and playing games on this enhanced setup, it was obvious to me why Philips Hue's parent company Signify invested so much into this product line. It's not just flashing lights, but rather a whole new experience. Watching Star Wars light up your room with each laser blast is truly a sight to behold. And playing arcade games on the Apple TV or an Xbox feels like your living room has been transformed into a high-end video arcade. Indeed, watching or playing video content without the Hue Play engaged now seems rather boring and disengaging. After seeing how the addition of a single gradient lightstrip changes the viewing experience, I'm now on a quest to expand my setup with more Play line accessories. Pros * Redefines the video watching and interactive experience * Robust lighting solution with a wide array of options * Real-time lighting changes elevate the content beyond bland background lighting Cons * Infrastructure requires a substantial fiscal investment * Installation requires time and planning to correctly execute Final Verdict In summary, the Philips Hue Play combination of the HDMI Sync Box coupled with the Gradient Lightstrip controlled by the Hue Bridge turns a bland Apple TV viewing experience into an encapsulating burst of excitement and powerful emotional responses. Even something as mundane as AirPlaying photos from my iPhone to my Apple TV make the images come alive as the Sync Box identifies the proper lighting hues and gradients matching the projected image, and then amplifies those colors around the room. It's truly a remarkable experience to see every time. Review: Pandora Portable Power Charger

Battery chargers are as ubiquitous as wireless headsets, and trying to find that perfect needle in such a large haystack isn't easy. Some chargers have wireless capability with an anemic number of wired ports. Others have huge battery charge storage but are bulky and not that portable. And nearly all the chargers I've reviewed in the past have confusing battery level LED dot indicators that make determining remaining charge level a mystery. Infinacore has addressed nearly all these shortcomings with the Pandora Portable Power (P3) charging device ($39.95). Read on to find out how the company did. Upon the initial inspection of the P3, the first thing it reminded me of was a rubberized MacBook Pro power adapter. The exterior rubberized surface makes for a secure grip, but it's not so porous as to become a hassle when placing or pulling it from your pants pocket. The top side of the P3 features a raised rubber ring with the Infinacore logo. This is the Qi-compatible wireless charger that works with all the newer iPhones that support wireless charging. On the bottom of the charger, along with four rubber feet to keep the charger from sliding on a table, is a QR code to scan with your phone to connect to Infinacore's tech support. On the rear is a fold-out standard US power plug with slots for EU and UK adapters that are included in the package. Another adapter for Asia is available separately. This thoughtful flexibility makes it easy to bring the P3 on international trips. Finally, the front of the unit is where all the wired charging connections can be made. USB-C, USB 3.0 Quick Charge and a standard USB 2.0 USB port are located on the top half along with a battery charging indicator light showing charge/discharge status. The bottom of the P3 has the unit's power on button and a LED numerical readout displaying the amount of charge remaining. No more guessing what three out of five dots means. Hooray! Using the P3 is as straightforward as plugging the foldout plug into a wall socket to charge the unit. You can also simultaneously charge wired USB-powered accessories while recharging the P3 base. Once the P3's LED readout shows 100% charged, you can unplug the unit and carry it in your pocket, purse, or tech bag for a quick wired or wireless recharge on the go. While the P3's battery isn't as large as those big 10,000 mAh bricks, its 8,000 mAh charge capacity is considerably lighter and much more compact compared to those with only a slight 2,000 mAh bump. Pros * Swiss Army Knife of Portable Chargers * Wireless, USB 3.0 QuickCharge and standard USB 2.0 charging * LED readout showing exact charge percentage remaining * Portable, flexible, international traveling device Cons * 8,000 mAh capacity slightly lower than much larger, bulkier chargers Final Verdict Overall, the P3 is currently the most feature-packed, user-friendly, and portable battery charger I have had the opportunity to review. It has all the latest device charging features, is reasonably priced and international-ready, and it's just replaced the old battery charger I had in my gig bag.   Topics: AccessoriesiPadiPhoneReviewsMaster your iPhone in one minute a day: Sign up here to get our FREE Tip of the Day delivered right to your inbox.

Review: Roll for the Galaxy Game for iPhone & iPad

One of my favorite digital board game translations of all time is Temple Gates Games' Race for the Galaxy ($6.99). Shortly after releasing Race, Temple Gates announced it was working on the dice-based version of the game, appropriately called Roll for the Galaxy ($9.99). Several years later, the company has finally made good on its promise with the simultaneous release of the game on PC, Android, and iOS. Read on to find out if Roll for the Galaxy is my new favorite digital board game. For those familiar with Race for the Galaxy, Roll is essential Race with dice along with rules and strategic gameplay choices that do indeed make it a game all its own. For those unfamiliar with Race, Roll for the Galaxy is an engine-building game based on selecting the right resources and being lucky enough to roll the right die combinations to grow your empire. The player that has the acquired the most points via their resource collection and expansion at the end of the game wins. While that fifty thousand foot view may be adequate, those interested in the specific details are welcome to read the game's freely available manual.  The dice mechanic in the game does an adequate job of simulating the roll of the dice, but the constraints of the adaptation's playing field loses the chaotic nature of physical dice rolls. Consequently, the roll action representation seems more like a slot machine than a fist full of die flung onto a game table. While the end result is identical to the board game counterpart, this mechanical constraint makes what is the most exciting part of the physical game somewhat sterile and monotone. This review was written during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Consequently, the physical world of board games has taken a substantial hit in popularity and sales due to this close communal activity with lots of object handling and passing being verboten in order to reduce the virus' transmission vector. This has left many board gamers like me actively seeking digital alternatives as an outlet for exercising my intellectually competitive pursuits. Solo turn-based computer games are fine filler, but smart AI still lacks any personality and emotional resonance that a live intelligent being brings to the game. Thankfully, Roll for the Galaxy can be played against both an increasingly whip-smart AI as well as another person either via pass and play or network. The network match making process is rather unique in that the game generates a unique player code based on your email address. You can then provide this code to your friends who have the game on their PC, Android, or iOS device and they can play as many times as you like using this same friend code. And yes, the game can be played cross-platform, greatly expanding the player base and preferred hardware platform. A suggestion I would like Temple Gates to consider with its next game is to try something new with its user interface. The company has reused the same layout and a number of assets in its games (Race for the Galaxy, Shards of Infinity ($7.99), and now Roll for the Galaxy), and while its good for this indie developer to keep its development costs down, I find that its losing a great deal of inspiration and compelling thematic environments to support the stunning artwork from the original board game sources. It also seems to be limiting them in terms of coming up with creative ideas to solving the uncracked nut of converting the freedom of tactile interaction of a physical board game into the virtual world of bits and bytes. The developers have already proven their competency with flawlessly converting physical board game mechanics and rulesets to the digital realm. Now they need to apply that same mastery to creatively interpreting the exuberance of the interacting with physical board game pieces in a virtual environment. At the very least, it won't look as though Temple Gates' next game is simply a reskinning of its Race for the Galaxy layout with whatever board game assets get swapped in with its next conversion. Pros * Competent conversion of an award-winning board game * Solid and easy to use cross-platform multiplayer support Cons * Dice movement is mechanical and sterile * Lack of player environment innovation * Win or lose based on the roll of the die Final Verdict It took me a while to write this review. I played the game several times a day for a couple weeks on the various platforms it runs on, yet I struggled with enjoying my time playing it. Temple Games is an extremely talented and truly dedicated indie developer that has refined its conversion craft, and I continue to enjoy playing Race for the Galaxy and, to a lesser extent, Shards of Infinity card game interpretations. And yet, whether it was the in your face RNG of the dice, the reuse of the same layout I've seen in Temple's prior board game conversions, or a soup of these and other factors, the game just failed to grab me. I was hoping at some point a switch would be thrown in my gaming brain and I would finally "get it" and watch the game zoom past Race for the Galaxy as my latest favorite digital board game but alas, that illuminating moment never came to pass. Roll for the Galaxy is a competent and somewhat enjoyable digital conversion of a favorite board game. The random nature of dice rolls brings what feels like considerably more random interactions. This in turn forces a more dynamic strategic shifts than I found in Race for the Galaxy. But I found the RNG mechanic simply too disruptive to my structured strategic thinking and lost too many games due to a bad choice of predicting dice results. The AUTO resolve sped up gameplay immensely and turned what normally would have been an hour long game into a five minute speed run. I found this efficiency both a blessing and a curse, in that it allowed me to fly through a game whenever I had a few minutes to spare, but it also reinforced that the game boils down to chance and numbers and felt at times like a glorified craps simulator. It's a competent game and one I appreciate for its AI and technical merits, but I simply didn't have nearly as much fun playing it as I continue to have with Race for the Galaxy. That said, if you like throwing dice more than shuffling cards, Roll may be the Galaxy game you have been waiting for. Everything You Need to Know about the New Mac Mini with M1 Chip

The new Mac mini has caught my attention. Announced at the November Mac event—the third Apple event this fall—and starting at $699, the Mac mini (2020) is currently the cheapest Mac desktop available. Since the Mac mini lacks the portability of a laptop and the processing power of a full desktop (even with all its boasted improvements over the older model), many may wonder what the point of this computer is. However, this is the first desktop Apple has produced that uses an ARM chip, which is a significant change as previously they were only used in iPhones and iPads. As I'm looking to purchase both a desktop and my first Mac computer, not only the price tag but also the compact nature of the Mac mini call out to me. I'm also intrigued by the M1 chip, which may bring more iOS functionality to the Macs. My processing needs aren't very high, and I'm looking to set up a more stable home office thanks to the shift toward working from home in 2020. For others, though, the Mac mini may not have much to offer. Let's take a look at what the Mac mini (2020) is promising us and what type of buyer might be the right fit. Related: New MacBook Air & Pro: Everything You Need to Know about Prices, Specs, Release Dates Mac Mini Price & Availability Availability: The new Mac mini is available to pre-order now, and will ship and hit stores next week. Prices: $699 for 256GB SSD storage,  $899 for 512GB SSD storage A Closer Look at the Mac Mini For the price, the specs of the Mac mini are solid. The Mac mini (2020) includes: * Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine; * 8 GB up to 16 GB of unified memory; * 256GB and 512GB SSD storage respectively; * HDMI 2.0 port * Two Thunderbird/USB-4 ports; * Two USB-A ports For those unfamiliar with the jargon, CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, so it's basically what keeps your computer running, and GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit. The Neural Engine is in charge of AI recognition technology, so the Mac could have things like face recognition or body motion sensing technology, as well as fun things like Animojis that we've seen in iOS. Up to 16 GB of memory is on the lower side versus the 32–64 GB the Intel Mac mini comes with, but it should still be adequate for those with more basic processing needs.  The First M1 Chip Desktop The iPhone and iPad have used ARM chips for years, and now so does the Mac mini, making it Apple's first desktop to have one. And as ARM chips have already been used in iOS devices for some time now, we can feel confident of their reliability, though having them in Macs will be a new experience, and there may be some issues switching from Intel. Apple is promising a lot out of these new M1 chips, saying the Mac mini will provide 5X faster performance than the best-selling Windows desktop in the same price range, but the company remained vague on any specifics, including what speeds we were looking at and which Windows desktop. I expect it will be a while before we can get any real data on whether Apple can back up its claims. Not Bigger, but Better? The place where we can see the most solid comparison stats for the 2020 Mac mini is when we look back at the previous generation. Apple highlighted big gains over the last Mac mini during the Mac event, including the ability to compile code in Xcode 3X faster, up to 4X higher frame rates for games, and increase the resolution of a photo in certain programs up to 15X faster. However, the processor of the earlier mini is actually two generations old, so a lot of these gains really aren't as impressive as they seem and put Apple's claims of amazing performance into a somewhat less trustworthy light. Another interesting note is you can still get the previous generation Mac mini with the Intel processor. Apple will often stop selling old versions when it releases a new one. While that might normally cast some doubt on its confidence in the new Mac mini's appeal, Apple is planning a two-year transition from Intel, so you'll see Intel Macs on the market for a bit longer. In light of this change, though, for those considering a purchase, you might want to wait until some reviews come out before deciding which Mac mini to go with. In this case, newer might not necessarily be better.  However, the main strength of the M1 processor in the new Mac mini is that the new MacOS Big Sur is specifically optimized for M1, so it will likely run much more smoothly on devices with that processor. Is There a Place for the Mac Mini? Stuck in that awkward place between lacking the portability of a laptop and underperforming most other desktops, the Mac mini may be passed over by many who prefer to either be able to easily transport their computer or want the higher-end performance of a full desktop. Still, it pulls me in, not only because I have a weakness for anything small, but also because I feel it could well match my desktop needs while staying comfortably within my budget. While there are some potential downsides, the mini's affordability combined with its potential for high speed and iOS functionality makes it worth considering. This little guy might just be the beginning of something big. Topics: Apple EventMaster your iPhone in one minute a day: Sign up here to get our FREE Tip of the Day delivered right to your inbox.

Everything Announced at the November Mac Event

During a brief, 45-minute virtual event presided over by Tim Cook, Apple introduced the first Macs to use its own M1 silicon chip and announced it would release Big Sur later this week. The new 13-inch MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini represent the first step in Apple's transition from using Intel chips to using its new propietary chip in its computers. Here's everything you need to know about the new Macs, including what you should keep in mind about the M1 chip if you're considering upgrading. Apple Bets Big on the M1 Chip Apple is taking orders now on the first three models of Mac computer to use its new, in-house central processing units, which the company has dubbed the M1. Apple has produced its own processors for iPhones and iPads all along, but the M1 is the first processor it has designed for laptop and desktop computers. The M1 processors enjoy speed improvements over the old Intel processors and offer increased compatibility with iOS and iPadOS apps, but will require a translator to use software written for older Macs. This shift moves new Mac computers more into line with the iPad and iPhone and away from the space shared with Windows PCs. Apple is gambling that the access to iOS apps and hardware improvements, some of which are substantial, will make the shift worthwhile in the long run; but in the short-term, consumers should expect that some apps they know and use on their Macs may not be available on the new Macs right away, or at all. Should you upgrade to a 2020 Mac? Normally upgrading is an easy choice, but not in 2020. Get Ready for macOS Big Sur Availability: Thursday, November 12 Compatibility: The new version of macOS will be compatible with: * MacBook, 2015 or later * MacBook Air, 2013 or later * MacBook Pro, late 2013 or later * Mac Mini, 2014 or later * iMac, 2014 or later * All models of iMac Pro, 2017 or later * Mac Pro, 2013 or later We've been waiting to learn when we can download and run macOS 11 Big Sur, and today Apple revealed that it will be available on November 12. Big Sur is the first operating system to support Apple's new in-house silicon chip for the Mac, the M1. Apple promises that Big Sur will "take advantage of the capability and power of the M1," and Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi enthused, "Big Sur is absolutely incredible on M1!" But what does that mean for people running Big Sur on older Macs? Check out our article featuring info on who can download Big Sur, what features to expect, and the differences those of us with older versus newer Macs can expect to experience. 13-Inch MacBook Air & 13-Inch MacBook Pro with M1 Chip Availability: Preorders start now. In-store availability and shipping start next week Price: The MacBook Air starts at $999 ($899 for education), the MacBook Pro starts at $1299 ($1199 for education). With today's announcement of a new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, Apple has promised a lot of performance and efficiency improvements. In our article covering everything you need to know about the new 2020 MacBooks, we take a look at these new releases as compared to previous models, how certain changes might affect existing users and those considering entering into the MacBook world, and how likely it is that the new machines will deliver on the claims Apple has made. We'll explain the specs and what they mean to users, as well as pricing and availability on these newest MacBook models. All in all, if they perform as well as expected, it’s likely that Apple is entering into a new era of performance with the development of their own processors.  Mac Mini Availability: Preorders start now. In-store availability and shipping start next week. Price: Starting at $699 The Mac mini (2020) is currently the cheapest Mac desktop available, cheaper even then the previous Mac mini. Some may argue its benefits stop there. Since the Mac mini lacks the portability of a laptop and the processing power of a full desktop (even with all its boasted improvements over the older model), many may wonder what the point is of this computer. Affordability is obviously a highlight, especially considering the specs you get for the price. Aside from that, though, this is the only Apple desktop computer to use an ARM processor, something previously reserved for laptops only. While we won't see any third-party benchmarks for a while, we're likely to see some speed gains coming from the M1 chip. Apple is promising some serious performance upgrades over the previous generation, but whether those can come within striking distance of a regular desktop computer remains to be seen. The New iPhones: Prices, When They're Available & Where to Buy Them

Apple’s iPhone 12 line comes out on a very staggered release schedule. That combined with the wide range in prices from Apple and cellular retailers means that knowing the details about how to get ahold of a new iPhone 12 can be tough. When will the new iPhone come out? With so much hype about the new iPhone 12 lineup, people are clamoring for details about iPhone 12 release dates, prices, and where to buy them. This year is especially interesting, as cellular retailers are offering surprising discounts, and standard pricing on certain models that is lower than that of the SIM-free iPhones you can get directly from the Apple store. To add to the confusion, Sprint customers and potential new T-Mobile customers have some new choices to make with regard to their plans to switch or upgrade, since the two companies merged back in April. We'll take a look at the prices to buy a new iPhone 12 model, how to decide whether to get your new iPhone from the Apple store or from your cellular carrier's stores, and some other details to help you shop for your new iPhone 12. How Much Does the New iPhone 12 Cost? This is a question with many answers. Let's look at Apple's prices for the iPhone 12 lineup, and then we'll explore the price opportunities to be found with the cellular carriers Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Pricing structures at all vendors are based on the iPhone 12 model you choose and the amount of storage (measured in GB) you opt for. How Much Does Apple Charge for a New iPhone 12? Apple's prices for the new iPhones aren't as spendy as anticipated, especially considering the serious tech upgrades they are equipped with.  iPhone 12 $799 or $33.29/month for 64 GB $849 or $35.37/month for 128 GB $949 or $39.54/month for 256 GB iPhone 12 mini $699 or $29.12/month for 64 GB $749 or $31.20/month for 128 GB $849 or $35.37/month for 256 GB iPhone 12 Pro $999 or $41.62/month for 128 GB $1,099 or $45.79/month for 256 GB $1,299 or $54.12/month for 512 GB iPhone 12 Pro Max $1,099 or $45.79/month for 128 GB $1,199 or $49.95/month for 256 GB $1,399 or $58.29/month for 512 GB The prices shown here are without applicable discounts, but you can use the link for each iPhone 12 model above to see the discount summary for each carrier on the Apple website. Just follow the link, select "See offer details" under your carrier name, and select the tab for the iPhone 12 model you're interested in buying.   Apple does offer Apple Card monthly payment plans as well, and in some cases you may benefit from taking advantage of them! First, find out how much your current cellular carrier will charge you for a new iPhone 12, and if you can get any discounts or deals. How Much Do Verizon, AT&T, Sprint & T-Mobile Charge for a New iPhone? These top cellular service providers are offering a thirty-dollar discount if you buy an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro from them, and you can usually still take advantage of trade-in specials as well. If you do not use one of these top competitors, you can also take a look at your current carrier's deals on their site, or decide if switching to a larger network is right for you. Verizon iPhone 12 Prices Verizon makes some pretty nice offers to those considering switching: the company is running its free-phone-if-you-switch deal for the iPhone 12 (or a significant amount off of an iPhone 12 Pro), as long as certain criteria are met by new customers. For those who are already customers of the largest cellular network, Verizon still has incentives for you if you're thinking of upgrading to an iPhone 12 model. To top it off, the carrier is also offering a starting price for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro that's $30 cheaper than Apple's asking price. AT&T iPhone 12 Prices While AT&T, the nation's second-largest cellular service provider, is offering the same $30 discount as the other carriers when compared to Apple's iPhone 12 and 12 Pro prices, the company's incentives for new and upgrading customers are far more compelling in my opinion. In a surprising move to keep customers and attract new ones, AT&T has extended a free-phone offer not only to customers who switch, but also to existing customers who want to upgrade! T-Mobile & Sprint iPhone 12 Prices As of April 1 2020, T-Mobile acquired Sprint, joining the two huge cellular service providers in what CNET refers to as a "mega mobile merger." Prior to the acquisition, T-Mobile and Sprint ranked 3rd and 4th in the industry, but according to Forbes, Sprint had been experiencing customer losses which T-Mobile has been working hard to reverse. Nevertheless, analysts rate the merged company favorably. If you're thinking of changing carriers to join either Sprint or T-Mobile, you'll need to go for T-Mobile, since any customers of either network will ultimately be classified as T-Mobile customers and Sprint is not able to accept new customer contracts. You can check out T-Mobile's many deals and incentives for new customers and decide if switching is right for you.  Otherwise, if you're an existing customer looking to upgrade, you can still score some major savings when you do so! Should I Buy an iPhone from Apple or from My Cellular Carrier? This question can really only be answered by weighing your options and your needs, but here are some factors to consider. SIM Card & Activation If you purchase an iPhone 12 model from Apple directly and not in association with a carrier, it'll arrive unlocked and without a SIM card. This means you may have to pay for activation and potentially other fees with your cellular carrier of choice in order to use your new iPhone on your network. Tech site Make Use Of reminds us that "when you buy a phone from Apple under the iPhone Upgrade Program, it comes as a certified unlocked device. You can even pair it with an existing plan and retain your unlocked status." There are certain benefits getting an unlocked iPhone; you can use it internationally and with any carrier, and you're not contract-bound to a specific carrier with that iPhone. If you purchase a new iPhone through your current carrier or with a new one, it'll arrive to you already locked in with that carrier, and usually with a SIM card already in it. Monthly Installments Apple and cellular carriers offer almost the same monthly installment options these days, but it's pretty important to calculate things out to see if you're going to end up paying more for the iPhone in the long-run if you opt for monthly payments. Add to that the fact that buying a new iPhone on installments almost always requires a certain kind of plan and a minimum level of device protection coverage, and you may be paying a lot more monthly than you realized. If you can score a free iPhone deal that can be applied to installment payments (like I did when I switched cellular carriers), you can sometimes still end up with very reasonable payments. When Are You Due for a Phone Upgrade? If you're able to upgrade your phone with your current carrier, it could be a great time to do so, but check with your carrier first. If you're with AT&T you could be in luck: they're offering a free iPhone 12 deal to both new and existing customers! Should You Switch Cellular Carriers to Get a Free iPhone? I'm not going to make a recommendation one way or another, because this is such an individual decision. Do you have issues with your current provider that are making you want to switch? Now could be a good time. But if you're loving your current provider and have a good history with them, that rapport can sometimes have its own benefits that make staying with your current company worth it. In my experience, there are pros and cons to switching. I got a free iPhone 11 last year when I switched service providers, and am fairly happy with my new service. Even with a few snags, the current company is definitely better than my previous carrier. That said, I was very careful about my timing, the details and pricing of my new plan, and reviewing the fine print on my free iPhone deal before I felt confident making the switch. If you do change cellular carriers, the financial advice site Clark notes that you need to time it just right in order to avoid having to a pay a large remaining sum on your old bill while also having to start paying your new cell phone bill.
