I've adopted wireless charging throughout my home and am always looking for the ideal Qi charger for the car. The MagMount Qi ($44.99) that Pitaka sent me to review is a leading contender. First, it's quite compact compared to many other competing models, so it won't obstruct too much of your dash or vents. And it has a built-in cooling fan so it won't overheat. The charger's surface uses aramid fiber plus a chrome exterior so it will look right at home in any sports car.

One reason the MagMount is so small is it doesn't use "arms" to hold the phone in place. Instead, as the name suggests, it has built-in magnets that are quite strong. They keep the phone in place to ensure charging position. However, it requires the use of a specific iPhone case, sold separately. The case has metal lining that lines up with the charger's magnets, but the case is surprisingly thin, partly because it also uses aramid fiber.
The slim case doesn't offer a lot of protection, particularly around the ports, but if that matters to you, Pitaka sells a "MagCase Pro" that is more protective. They are sold separately, which is good, so you can make the right call for you. I tried both cases and personally, I prefer the Pro case as I've had too many broken screens. Others may prefer the slim case, which is amazingly thin considering it has metal plates embedded to connect to the magnet! Plus, you can have cases for other drivers in the family and share the mount.
Pros
- Qi wireless charging car mount
- Stylish aramid fiber and chrome accents
- Vent or dash mount, with optional suction or CD slot sold separately
- Integrated fan to avoid overheating
- USB-C based power for fast charging
Cons
- Requires proprietary case with embedded magnets
- No car charger included
Final Verdict
The MagMount Qi from Pitaka has a sporty compact look a long as you don't mind using one of their proprietary cases.
