Samsung Proves It Is the Brand for the New Generation of Homeowners at KBIS 2020

With millennials poised to become the largest group of homebuyers this year, today’s customers are looking for home appliances that work seamlessly, fit within their lifestyles, and match their unique personalities. That is exactly what they can expect from Samsung, America’s number one brand that also happens to be the fastest growing appliance brand, Samsung will be showcasing its broad portfolio of lifestyle home appliance products at the 2020 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show.

“We’re proud to lead the home appliance industry by offering innovative products for every type of customer, and for every type of home, whether it’s your first apartment or your dream home,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “We’re excited to be back at KBIS to demonstrate how our personalized, connected products simplify everyday tasks so that you can spend more time doing what you love, with the people you love, in the space you love.”

Our living spaces are evolving. Home is no longer viewed as just a kitchen, a living room, and a bedroom. It’s where our friends and family members gather to share and relax with one another. At the same time, the boundaries between our physical and digital worlds are shrinking.

Samsung offers home appliances that eliminate those boundaries, allowing customers to make their living spaces anything they need, and want, them to be. And these appliances are just as beautiful as they are functional—no matter which type of product you are looking for, you will find design and color options that complement your personal style and match your home’s décor.

At KBIS 2020, Samsung will highlight connected products and, more importantly, curated experiences—an ecosystem of intelligent products that make household tasks more convenient than ever, freeing you up to do the things you enjoy most. That means ranges you can control via your favorite voice assistant, so you can adjust the time or temperature while you’re busy chopping vegetables. And it means personal care products that keep your most valuable fashion investments fresh, clean, and ready-to-wear.

All of the Samsung home appliances on display offer customers control over their connected devices, including the one at the center of the smart home: the Family Hub. Family Hub enables families to share life’s important moments with one another and manage the smart devices within their home. You can order groceries, share videos from your smartphone, view multiple cameras at-a-glance, and even be notified when your laundry is done—all on the screen of your refrigerator.

There will also be the new side-by-side refrigerator lineup, the new French door refrigerator lineup, the new slide-in range lineup, 4-Door Bespoke refrigerator, Jet stick vacuum cleaner, and AirDresser, showcased at the booth this year.

In addition to offering solutions for homeowners, Samsung will also display solutions for the home builder industry. As the builder segment has grown, Samsung has invested heavily in products and programs specifically for the home builder, designer, and distributor businesses. With industry-leading design, performance, and connectivity, Samsung is uniquely positioned to provide everything builders need to deliver the experiences that their customers expect from them. Samsung helps builders convert a prospect into a closing—and does it with the broadest, deepest lineup of home appliances, from entry-level to premium.

The latest Samsung innovations will be on display at Booth C6307 in the Las Vegas Convention Center. For more information about Samsung Home Appliances and Connected Living, please visit www.samsungbuilder.com.

Samsung Reimagines Clothing Care with AirDresser, Innovative New Appliance that Refreshes and Sanitizes Clothes without Washing

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its innovative AirDresser in markets around the world, including the U.K. and Russia. Samsung’s latest home innovation uses powerful air and steam to remove dust and germs, refreshing and sanitizing clothes to provide easy and convenient garment care.

“Samsung is once again elevating modern life by transforming how we care for our clothes at home, giving consumers more freedom to spend their time doing things they want to do,” said Jennifer Song, Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “AirDresser is Samsung’s response to consumer demand for more dynamic performance from even basic appliances, providing an easy and effective home solution to meet their needs for clean clothes that smell fresh, are germ free and look neat.”

Refreshes Your Clothes Thoroughly

Once a garment is hung inside the unit, the user can initiate the cycle and simply wait for the system to run its course: The Jet Air and Air Hangers release powerful air to loosen and remove engrained dust, with only minimal noise and vibration, quiet enough for anywhere inside the home, including the bedroom.

Then, the JetSteam sanitizes the garments to get rid of the bacteria, viruses, and allergens.* Infusing high temperature steam deep into the fabric, JetSteam is the perfect tool for routine sterilization of clothes and many other household items such as linen and soft toys.

AirDresser also uses its Deodorizing Filter function to freshen clothes, breaking down the odor-causing particles caused by sweat, tobacco, and food, while preventing unpleasant smells from building up inside the unit. Meanwhile, Self Clean technology dehumidifies, sanitizes, and deodorizes the interior of the AirDresser without requiring harsh or costly detergents by cleaning with a combination of heat, air, and steam. It even notifies users whenever it needs cleaning every 40 cycles.

Grooms Your Wardrobe Well

AirDresser also ensures clothes are groomed gently, increasing their lifespan by helping consumers avoid washing their favorite items too frequently, which can cause damage to the delicate fabric. Heatpump Drying gently dries clothes at a low temperature, minimizing heat damage and shrinkage. And with Wrinkle Care, the AirDresser can smooth out wrinkles without ironing by using a combination of steam and air to relax the clothes.

AirDresser can also handle delicate materials such as fur, which usually requires professional service. Fur care dehumidifies 90% of the moisture trapped in fur, which increases its volume by 78% and helps maintain its original condition, thus extending its lifespan.** As a result, it can keep a wide variety of items made of fur, including coats, wraps, or shawls, looking their best for much longer.

The unit even keeps clothes outside the unit stay in optimal conditions. The Dehumidification feature draws in air from the room, extracting moisture while pushing out dry air.

Saves You Time and Money

AirDresser can also save consumers time and money when they incorporate it into their daily routines. For example, operating a complete washer-and-dryer process with just one or two items per load or going to the dry cleaners frequently is not time or cost efficient. So, using the JetSteam to sanitize and deodorize your clothes for a quick refresh makes sense. And with Jet Air and Air Hangers able to quickly remove dust off of clothes, you can confidently re-wear outfits without worrying about bad odors or hygiene. Heatpump Drying also reduces drying time with a more effective heat transfer method.

And with the AI-powered capabilities that SmartThings provides, you can enjoy better clothing care and easier maintenance. Home Care Wizard remotely identifies problems and provides a troubleshooting service, while My Closet stores details of your clothes and suggests the best courses for them.

Enrich Your Day-to-Day

Combining the technology with modern design, AirDresser offers a sleek frame that blends flawlessly in any contemporary living space. In Quiet Mode, AirDresser can be run overnight without disturbing sleep and, for added convenience, it features portable water containers for steam at the bottom, so it doesn’t require a water supply or drainage system. This also means the unit can easily be installed anywhere most suitable for the user. AirDresser lets consumers refresh their clothes every day in the comfort of their own home.

Samsung Pioneers 5G-Based Mobility with Launch of Digital Cockpit 2020

At CES 2020, Samsung Electronics unveiled Digital Cockpit 2020, which utilizes 5G to link features inside and outside the vehicle and provide connected experiences for drivers and passengers alike.

Digital Cockpit 2020 is the third co-development between Samsung Electronics and HARMAN International, and combines Samsung’s telecommunications technologies, semiconductors and displays with HARMAN’s automotive expertise. The solution enables seamless two-way connections between the home, the office and all the other spaces that users may visit while providing personalized experiences and in-car infotainment. What’s more, smart features enabled through Bixby actively support the driver, further reinforcing safe driving.

Digital Cockpit 2020 incorporates eight displays inside the vehicle, as well as eight cameras. The solution utilizes Samsung Exynos Auto V9 SoC (System on Chip), a semiconductor for vehicle electronics, and Android 10, which allow for several features to be run at the same time.

Tailored Infotainment Delivery

Once the driver logs in using either facial recognition or a smartphone fingerprint reader, the Center Information Display can be used to show the driver’s schedule and a range of other information.

The Digital Cockpit’s Front Display provides visual navigation information and is positioned to ensure that the driver keeps their eyes on the road. It is equipped with QLED Local Dimming1 technology and split-screen mode to allow passengers to make use of the display without distracting the driver.

The Dashboard Display, which is seamlessly incorporated into the vehicle’s interior design, is positioned under the Front Display and delivers visual notices and alerts.

When the driver activates Samsung’s Bixby voice recognition service, this display shows a Bixby animation that listens to the driver’s commands.

The Console Display is located under the Center Information Display. It can be set up to control various features and the functions of other displays, as well as the vehicle itself.

Passengers sitting in the back seats can connect their personal tablets to the Digital Cockpit and use them to control things like air conditioning, ambient lighting and vehicle speakers. They will also be able to enjoy multimedia content and other services provided by the system on their devices once they are connected.

When the driver or passengers connect their mobile devices to Samsung DeX2 for vehicles, they will be able to read and work on documents from their PCs on the car’s Center Information Display. The display also has a feature that allows users to connect multiple mobile devices at the same time. Unlike the 2019 Digital Cockpit, the 2020 solution allows for these connections to be made wirelessly.

The Digital Cockpit 2020 also features multi-zone audio, which allows each passenger to listen to their own music via speakers embedded in the headrests of their seats.

Enhancing Safety According to Individual Needs

On the back of the vehicle, micro LEDs on the external tail lamps are used to form the 53.7-inch Tail Display. With V2X (Vehicle to Everything) communication technology and the Tail Display, the vehicle can share messages and communicate the driver’s status to parties outside the vehicle when required. For example, the display might show messages such as “roadworks ahead” and “pedestrians approaching”, among others.

Inside the vehicle, two 7-inch displays – one on the left and one on the right – serve as displays for the Camera Monitoring System, which replace the conventional side mirrors in the Digital Cockpit 2020. The system monitors possible risks on the rear lateral sides of the vehicle while the user is driving or parking. In addition, the driver can adjust the areas that the cameras monitor according to their preferences.

Meanwhile, the Cabin Talk feature allows the driver to conveniently talk to the passengers in the back seats without needing to turn their head.

Smarter “Bixby in the car” Actively Communicates with Drivers

Digital Cockpit 2020 operates based on the Android platform for cars. This allows Samsung’s integrated IoT platform SmartThings to work in tandem with the revamped “Bixby in the car” to enhance connectivity by allowing the vehicle to actively communicate with the driver. For example, when someone visits your house, Bixby in the car detects the visitor via SmartThings and notifies you of the visit. Not only that, but Bixby can also make suggestions regarding turning lights and home appliances on at your house while you’re on the way home.

What’s more, Bixby in the car also monitors the driver’s status via the Driver Monitoring System, and tailors its suggestions to the driver’s perceived needs. For example, when you are growing drowsy during a long-distance drive, the system may suggest turning on some music, or taking other precautions to combat drowsiness.

Smarter Bixby in the car establishes an environment that is carefully tailored to suit the driver’s needs and circumstances. What’s more, the system actively monitors the status of the vehicle (things such as engine oil levels), and Bixby alerts the driver when a visit to a maintenance shop is needed.

1 Samsung’s QLED Local Dimming technology allows for the brightness in the screen to be selectively adjusted according to what is being displayed at the time

2 Samsung DeX is a service that allows mobile devices to connect to and realize an environment similar to a PC anywhere, anytime

Samsung Releases Portable SSD T7 Touch – the New Standard in Speed and Security for External Storage Devices

Samsung Electronics today announced the release of its latest external storage device – the Portable Solid State Drive (SSD) T7 Touch – which combines sleek, compact design with the fastest transfer speeds currently available based on the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. The new device also elevates data protection to the next level with an additional hardware security measure in the form of a built-in fingerprint sensor.

“Consumers who are constantly on the go between work, play and passion projects want to be able to securely carry their content with them,” said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Biz Team, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “Now their data is secure thanks to the fingerprint recognition functionality incorporated into the product, which delivers industry-leading transfer speeds in a compact form factor.”

Designed for both professional and casual users, Samsung’s T7 Touch provides enough capacity to securely store large numbers of pictures, games or 4K/8K videos whether on a PC, tablet, smartphone or game console1, as well as the durability to take their content with them2.

The T7 Touch offers a significant speed upgrade over previous storage solutions. Make It Your Galaxy: Customize Your Favorite Galaxy Devices with the Galaxy Store

From punch-hole displays to shimmering hues and multiple form factors, Samsung embraced individuality and creativity in its design approach. But no matter what device best suits your daily needs, you want it to suit your personal style.

Samsung makes customizing your Galaxy easy with a variety of wallpapers, fonts, themes, and watch faces available in the Galaxy Store. Here’s how you can add a personal flair to your device.

Make It Your Galaxy

Whether you’re celebrating the new year or just want to personalize your Galaxy device, the store has something for everyone. Simply open the Galaxy Store and navigate to the “My Galaxy” menu and you will find a wide range of customization options.

Themes will give your entire device a makeover with new skins for your icons, backgrounds, and even fonts.

While themes will change the general appearance of your phone, the wallpaper is simply the background image on your home screen. The Galaxy Store also features a wide variety of wallpapers to choose from to customize your home screen.

For Galaxy Watch users, the store also offers a massive library of custom watch faces to personalize your favorite wearable. Whether you want to track health stats or go with something more fashion-forward, the Galaxy Store has thousands of watch faces to choose from.

Best of 2019

Customization was popular throughout the Galaxy Store in 2019 as tech increasingly became an important part of fashion and individual expression. In February 2019, Samsung consolidated its themes and apps under the Galaxy store, which is now home to a growing number of themes and watch faces. Thanks in part to these additions, the store has also seen its customer base grow rapidly over the last year.

Last year saw a burst in popularity of the colorful and unique themes in the Galaxy Store from designers around the world. The most popular theme categories were simple, nature, colorful, and cute.

Cogul Planet Inc.’s goofy, Siba-inspired theme, Siba  Rich_Premium Free Sound Pack S10, captured the trend perfectly.

“2019 was happier because many users loved the theme I created,” said Cogul Planet Inc.’s lead designer. “We will continue to create themes that make people laugh and touch their hearts in the future.” In addition to cute characters, black and blue themes were also popular throughout the year.

The deep black and rich bronze tones of Sebastian Wolodkiewicz’s [SW] Luxury Gear theme are one such example, featuring a steam-punk aesthetic that was popular among Galaxy Store users. The black and blue trend wasn’t just limited to themes, as users also sought rich blues and dark blacks for their wallpapers.

Some designers, such as studio 1624, embraced the darker side of the trend. The studio’s Urban Rain video wallpaper turns your phone into a rain-streaked window, for those that love the melancholy of a rainy afternoon. Other designers used the color trends to create bold works of art in their wallpapers. Bergen Themes’s high-contrast, Live Colorfully HD, wallpaper was a hit in the Galaxy Store last year. Watch faces, on the other hand, focused more on health and wellness. Users preferred watch faces that allowed them to track health and wellness stats easily right from their wrist.

The MD153 New Hybrid Watch Face from Matteo Dini capitalized on this trend by allowing users to track everything they need in one watch face. Featuring a calendar, heart rate monitor, step counter, and both digital and analog clocks, it has something for everyone. Even more luxurious watch faces included health and wellness features.

Designer Tatyana Galkina went with a more luxury look for the Golden Floral watch face that was among the most popular in the Galaxy Store last year. Adorned with golden and purple flowers, the watch face allows its users to track their daily steps and heart rate in addition to the time and battery levels. Other watch faces focused on seasonal trends.

Looking for a way to personalize your own Galaxy devices? Head to the Galaxy Store to find more wallpapers, themes, and watch faces that best suit your style. The Galaxy Store comes pre-installed on all Galaxy phones and can be reached on your home screen or in the Samsung folder.

With its thin and light form factor, the Galaxy XCover Pro offers much more than a traditional enterprise device; it is the most stylish and sleekest rugged all-in-one mobile device on the market.

The device is IP68 water and dust resistant, capable of withstanding drops of up to 1.5m, even without a case, and is MIL-STD 810G certified for reliable protection against extreme altitude, humidity, and other severe environmental conditions. Pogo pin charging support and compatibility with third-party charging docks ensure the phone is powered as soon as the workday begins, and a 4,050mAh battery lasts long after the day is done. For times when even more power is needed, the battery is replaceable – just pop in a spare and keep going.1

The Galaxy XCover Pro allows users to tailor their experience with two programmable keys to create custom actions with one click. This functionality makes complicated workflows simple letting users open the scanner, turn on the flashlight or launch a CRM app all without swiping through apps, scrolling through menus, or even looking at the screen.2

Finally, by removing the physical home button, Samsung has enhanced the elegance and simplicity of the phone design while maintaining its ruggedness. The Galaxy XCover Pro offers a clear, edge-to-edge 6.3” FHD+ Infinity Display with an enhanced touchscreen able to work in any condition, including rain or snow. For users in the field, glove mode allows for gloves-on use and the new voice to text message feature provides real-time dictation and messaging for simple, convenient communication.3

Full Field Solution Powered by Samsung Partner Ecosystem

The Galaxy XCover Pro is capable of meeting all the needs of the mobile enterprise, and features everything customers have come to expect from Samsung. Professionals and field workers can enjoy their favorite mobile solutions from Samsung’s broad partner ecosystem, making it easier to manage inventory and process payments immediately and communicate on the go.

The Galaxy XCover Pro is push-to-talk ready with its two programmable keys, allowing users to stay in contact with anyone throughout their day with a simple push of a button, including the main office, dispatchers or different team members on-site. To make it easier for colleagues to communicate with each other, Samsung worked closely with Microsoft to introduce Microsoft Teams, its new walkie talkie capability on the Galaxy XCover Pro, making it the first partner solution to leverage the push-to-talk feature.

Samsung also empowers workers across all industries with mobile solutions that help accomplish daily tasks through software and hardware solutions from Infinite Peripherals, KOAMTAC, Scandit and Visa. Retail associates can track inventory and process payments, with barcode scanning available. They can take advantage of ready-to-use mobile point of sale (mPOS) whose payment modules are available based on SDK for mPOS solution vendors.

Galaxy XCover Pro will also have Samsung POS, a mobile-based point of sale (POS) solution that has been approved by Visa’s Tap to Phone pilot program. This joint solution benefits sellers by helping them stay in touch with how consumers prefer to pay and removing the need for a dedicated POS hardware with an easy software solution that is reliable, convenient and secure. Tap to Phone’s sophisticated software terminal builds on EMV chip transaction to generate the same functionality while giving peace of mind and assurance that financial data remains safe and secure. Customers will be able to make payments in seconds by simply tapping their contactless card, phone or watch to the Galaxy XCover Pro.

“The Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro is a robust retail POS platform for a true retail digital transformation,” said Mary Kay Bowman, Visa’s Head of Seller Solutions. “Its applications for businesses such as healthcare, airlines and restaurants are a great example of how Visa together with Samsung can democratize access to payment experiences that consumers increasingly expect, no matter where they are.”

Defense-Grade Security Meets Enterprise-Friendly Management

In addition to its ruggedness, the Galaxy XCover Pro is also built with data security in mind and is protected by Samsung’s defense-grade multi-layered Knox platform. With Samsung Knox, mobile professionals can take advantage of advanced security features like hardware-backed protection, data isolation and encryption and boot- and run-time protection to ensure that business-critical information is protected against intrusion, malware and other threats. The device also features a fingerprint reader and facial recognition for touch-free accessibility while out in the field.

With Samsung Knox, large enterprises can quickly and easily setup and customize the device, and manage firmware versions, putting IT administrators in control of the management and updates of their device fleet through Knox Configure and Knox E-FOTA. In select markets, The Galaxy XCover Pro will be available as an Enterprise Edition, providing two years of market availability and four years of security updates to ensure business continuity. With the Galaxy XCover Pro, Samsung continues to raise the bar for enterprise-ready technology ready for use anywhere, any time.

Designing the Gaming Monitors of the Future: the Odyssey G7 and G9

2020 is set to be a big year for Samsung innovations. A year that will see the company chart a bold new future not just for technologies like AI, 5G and IoT, but everyday devices like gaming monitors as well. Since producing its very first gaming monitor less than four years ago, Samsung has soared to the top of the market with a portfolio of offerings that combine outstanding performance with immersive visuals.

Now, the company has announced that beginning this year, its Odyssey line of gaming laptops, PCs and VR devices is expanding to include gaming monitors, too. This will establish Odyssey as Samsung’s official product line for gaming gear. Visitors to Samsung’s CES 2020 booth can see firsthand how the company applied the futuristic design cues that the line is known for – and gamers love – to create the all-new Odyssey G7 and G9. Both the (27- or 32-inch) G7 and the (49-inch) G9 come packed with next-level specs including ultrawide, 1000R-curvature screens, a rapid 1ms response time, a 240Hz refresh rate for incredibly smooth FPS (first-person shooter) gameplay, G-Sync compatibility, and much more.

To learn more about the process behind the gaming monitors’ designs, Samsung Newsroom interviewed some of the designers who brought the monitors to life.

From left: Ki-hong Kim, Adam Burgess and Juwon Cho of Samsung Electronics’ Product Design Group, Visual Display Business

A New Chapter for the Odyssey

When discussing the process of refining the Odyssey G7 and G9’s designs, each member of the team, from Samsung’s Visual Display Business, stressed the importance of putting the needs and interests of gamers first. That, at its core, is what the Odyssey line is all about: equipping users with the tools they need to enjoy the best possible gaming experience.

However, as Visual Communication designer Adam Burgess noted, the launch of the Odyssey G7 and G9 not only demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to offering consumers game-changing gaming technologies, “It also creates an opportunity for us to thoughtfully communicate the philosophy of the Odyssey line in a way that feels authentic to our product offerings now and to come.”

That philosophy is realized in a pair of monitors created under design principles that can be summed up with the words “courageous,” “futuristic,” and “confident.” The devices’ simple designs set the tone for Odyssey monitors to follow, and are distinguished by their sharp contrast of black and white elements and use of eye-catching blue accenting. (It should be noted that the “Odyssey” name will also be applied to Samsung gaming monitors that are already on the market.)

“The word ‘Odyssey’ brings to mind the idea of navigation, of a journey,” said Burgess. “As Samsung’s official product line for gaming gear, Odyssey offers consumers next-level gaming experiences, powered by a combination of advanced gaming technologies and purposeful design. Together, these two attributes evoke the image of advancing toward the future.”

Future Focused

The Odyssey G7 and G9’s futuristic designs are products of the team’s careful observation of market trends. Odyssey G9 designer Juwon Cho explained the team’s approach.

“Our market research has shown that Samsung gaming monitors consistently earn good reviews,” said Cho. “However, we received feedback that some consumers would like to see genre-specific gaming elements incorporated into gaming monitor designs. To chart the best course for enhancing our offerings, we first examined some of the popular games and devices that gamers tend to prefer.” When the research showed that many gamers prefer futuristic concepts, the team adopted that term as a key design principle.

For gamers, one of the Odyssey G9’s most appealing – and futuristic – design elements may just be the Infinity Core Lighting on its back. As Cho explained, the key to its design boils down to the same factor that enables the monitor to transform users’ gaming sessions: immersion.

“When designing the lighting, we utilized light and mirrors to create the sensation that you’re being transported to another dimension when you look at it,” said Cho. “Of course, gaming on a 49-inch curved monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio evokes that same immersive sensation, and that alone would be very enticing to many gamers. However, we wanted to create gaming monitors that offered more. That is to say, we wanted them to be monitors that users would be proud to show off.”

As design team member Ki-hong Kim explained, however, immersion wasn’t the only factor that guided the Odyssey G7’s lighting design. “Like all Samsung gaming monitors, the Odyssey G7 features what we like to call Arena Lighting on its back,” said Kim. “We differentiated the design by adding dynamic shapes and lighting to the monitor’s front bezel. It’s all part of creating a monitor that, just like futuristic armor and weapons from sci-fi games, projects a strong image as gaming gear.”

Convenience Is Key

Kim emphasized that the consumer is always key when it comes to product design, and because gamers are always interested in what the professionals are using, “We asked professional gamers to share their detailed opinions and preferences so we could incorporate them into the product.”

For example, many pro gamers consider a gaming monitor’s stand to be a very important design consideration. This is because often times, when gaming, they require a large space to move their mouse, and a wide monitor stand may get in their way. It’s also important that the monitor stand does not prevent them from placing their keyboard in a comfortable position. To address these inconveniences, the team carefully calibrated the angle of the Odyssey G7’s stand to enable users to comfortably position their keyboard and move their mouse freely. Users can also easily swivel, tilt and adjust the height of both the Odyssey G7 and G9 to accommodate their posture and eye level.

Breaking Convention

Continuing his breakdown of the Odyssey G7’s design, Kim described various ways that the team enhanced the gaming monitor to differentiate it from conventional offerings. The G7’s 1000R-curvature screen is a sharp departure from typical gaming monitors, which feature boxy rectangular frames. He also explained how the team optimized the accent lighting to enhance the gaming experience and make the monitor stand out.

“Some members of our team were concerned that incorporating lighting into the front of the display could disturb gameplay,” said Kim. “This led us to come up with a lighting design that directs light downward. The design received positive reviews from users, and with that aspect of the design sorted, we were able to continue developing the product.”

The Odyssey G9’s glossy white design is another departure from convention. After surveying customer opinions, the team elected to utilize the color because feedback indicated that white creates the strongest impression of a futuristic design. Feedback on the monitors themselves has been terrific thus far, as both have already garnered Innovation Awards at this year’s CES – the Odyssey G9 in the Computer Peripheral Device category, and the G7 in the Gaming category.

Getting the Most Out of Your Monitor

In addition to discussing the process of refining the Odyssey G7 and G9’s designs, the designers revealed how they would utilize the monitors to enhance their own gaming experiences.

“Often times, when I play games, I play in a dark environment so I can immerse myself in the game and concentrate better,” said Kim. “The lighting on the front and back of the G7 was designed with consideration for such environments, and helps make the gaming experience that much more immersive.”

Cho added that the Odyssey G9’s immersion-amplifying design has the power to transform how users experience their favorite games. “The G9’s 1000R curvature allows it to fill the user’s entire field of view,” said Cho. “When you play games that support the monitor’s 32:9 screen ratio, especially FPS, flight simulator and racing games, the level of immersion is such that you feel as if you are inside the game itself.”

The market for gaming monitors is estimated to grow from roughly 7.8 million units in 2019 to 12.2 million by 2023.1 Going forward, Samsung will continue to lead innovation in the market by offering gamers monitor designs that put their needs first.

“Even after a gaming monitor launches, the team will constantly seek out feedback and data to reflect in the designs of future products,” said Cho.

“Our goal,” added Kim, “is to anticipate trends in the rapidly evolving gaming market, and design products that lead those trends – rather than products that are simply different from what’s already out there.”

Samsung Begins 2020 By Winning Three Awards for Commitment to Sustainability

Samsung Electronics has started off the new decade by winning three prizes that reflect the company’s commitment to pursuing sustainable recycling, upcycling and waste management practices.

At the 2019 Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Electronics Challenge awards ceremony, hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Samsung received the Champion and Tier Awards, and at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovation Awards, Samsung was recognized as this year’s winner for promoting efficient resource use.

Samsung Electronics wins the EPA’s annual SMM Award. Jenni Chun (center-left), Head of Regulatory & Environmental Affairs, Samsung Electronics America, receives the Gold Tier Award. Kyungmo Yang (center-right), Manager of Galaxy Upcycling Program, Samsung Electronics, receives the Cutting Edge Champion Award.

A Winning Commitment to a Circular Economy

The SMM Electronics Challenge, hosted since 2014, is the EPA’s annual awards ceremony recognizing participants for their commitment to sustainable materials management and the responsible recycling, honoring those companies who, in the US, voluntarily engage in recycling programs. Honors are awarded in two categories, the Champion Award for products, non-products and new technologies that are harnessed in environmentally conscious ways, and the Tier Award for recycling activities. This year, Samsung won awards in both categories, and on January 8, several leading Samsung figures attended the SMM Electronics Challenge awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

In the Champion Award category, Samsung received its third Cutting-Edge Award since the award’s creation in 2016, which recognizes participants for pioneering ideas in electronics sustainability. The company was recognized for the Galaxy Upcycling project, a project dedicated to reusing end-of-life mobile phones for both environmental protection and societal gain.

The award-winning Galaxy Upcycling project transforms obsolete mobile phones no longer in use into internet-of-things (IoT) devices with the power to benefit underserved communities; since 2017, the project has, in partnership with Korean medical researchers, harnessed recycled smartphone devices for the development of portable eye examination equipment. In 2017, the project won the SMM Cutting-Edge Award for the first time, and last year supplied 90 portable ophthalmoscopes for use in Vietnam, benefitting the lives and vision of around 14,000 residents.

In the Tier Award category, Samsung has, for the sixth year in a row, been awarded Gold, an honor bestowed upon only those companies that send at least 96% of all used electronics to certified third-party recyclers. Samsung was recognized for collecting and recycling 60,000 tons of waste electronics in 2018, along with once again only making contracts with only those vendors certified by e-Stewards, a third-party certification management program for electronics recyclers. Furthermore, the company actively participates in eCycling, a voluntary e-waste collection program for companies organized by the CTA (Consumer Technology Association).

Innovating Sustainability

At this year’s CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, Samsung received a wide range of honors at the CES Innovation Awards, with products and services from display technologies to mobile devices awarded for standing out in the industry as leading, innovative solutions. Among these, Samsung’s The Serif Eco-Packaging design has been recognized for promoting the efficient use of resources.

The Eco-Packaging design allows consumers to upcycle the packaging of a product into small, versatile pieces of furniture. Once they have assembled their devices, consumers can repurpose the thick corrugated cardboard packaging into small tables or shelves, guided by manuals available by scanning a QR code on the box. This packaging is to be rolled out with Samsung’s TV line The Serif within the first half of 2020.

Also, ahead of this year’s CES, Samsung on January 4 hosted an e-waste collection event where attendees could dispose of their obsolete electronics, free of charge. Samsung has been hosting this e-waste recycling event annually since 2017.
