Galaxy S8 Assists in Emergency Rescue

Following a recent accident at sea in Cebu, a Samsung Galaxy smartphone proved helpful in securing the safety of 20 people.

On July 8, a boat carrying 16 foreign divers and four Filipino nationals on an island hopping excursion capsized in the waters off Bogo City in Cebu province. About 30 minutes after the boat tipped over, the stranded passengers were able to call for help. They were all returned to shore safely.

The passengers were able to call for help relatively promptly after a Samsung Galaxy S8 belonging to Canadian national Jim Emdee was found submerged in water under the boat. Emdee and the other passengers used the phone to call for help, and provided rescuers with their location using the device’s GPS function.

Following his harrowing experience, Emdee reached out to extend his thanks to the Samsung engineering team, saying, “I really hope my thanks can make it to the engineering team as honestly it really saved us all. Only my S8 was able to connect and it worked all the way until we made it to land. It stayed alive for much longer than I thought possible, and it really made the difference.”

James Jung, Head of Samsung Electronics Philippines said, “We are glad to hear that the passengers are all safe, and that a Samsung phone was helpful in the rescue effort. We will continue to work towards producing devices that can come to users’ aid when they find themselves in dire situations.”

Samsung advises users to keep the GPS locator on their Galaxy smartphones turned on while travelling, especially if travelling alone or in remote areas. Galaxy smartphones also allow users to send SOS messages to designated emergency contacts by enabling the ‘Send SOS messages’ feature (Settings → Advanced features → Send SOS message). With this feature turned on, users can tap the power button three times quickly to send out an SOS message to up to four emergency contacts.

Samsung Begins Mass Production of Industry’s First 12Gb LPDDR5 Mobile DRAM for Premium Smartphones

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first 12-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, which has been optimized for enabling 5G and AI features in future smartphones. The new mobile memory comes just five months after announcing mass production of the 12GB LPDDR4X, further reinforcing the company’s premium memory lineup. Samsung also plans to start mass producing 12-gigabyte (GB) LPDDR5 packages later this month, each combining eight of the 12Gb chips, in line with growing demand for higher smartphone performance and capacity from premium smartphone manufacturers.

“With mass production of the 12Gb LPDDR5 built on Samsung’s latest second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) class process, we are thrilled to be supporting the timely launch of 5G flagship smartphones for our customers worldwide,” said Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of DRAM Product & Technology, Samsung Electronics. “Samsung remains committed to rapidly introducing next-generation mobile memory technologies that deliver greater performance and higher capacity, as we continue to aggressively drive growth of the premium memory market.”

Thanks to its industry-leading speed and power efficiency, Samsung’s new mobile DRAM can enable next-generation flagship smartphones to fully leverage 5G and AI capabilities like ultra-high-definition video recording and machine learning, while greatly extending the battery life.

At a data rate of 5,500 megabits per second (Mb/s), the 12Gb LPDDR5 is approximately 1.3 times faster than previous mobile memory (LPDDR4X, 4266Mb/s) that is found in today’s high-end smartphones. When made into a 12GB package, the LPDDR5 is able to transfer 44GB of data, or about 12 full-HD (3.7GB-sized) movies, in only a second. The new chip also uses up to 30 percent less power than its predecessor by integrating a new circuit design with enhanced clocking, training and low-power feature that ensures stable performance even when operating at a blazingly fast speed.

In order to manage production capacity with more flexibility, Samsung is considering transferring its 12Gb LPDDR5 production to its Pyeongtaek (Korea) campus starting next year, depending on demand from global customers. Following its introduction of the 12Gb LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, Samsung expects to also develop a 16Gb LPDDR5 next year, to solidify its competitive edge in the global memory market.

[A Journey Towards A Sustainable Future] ① Samsung’s Global Green Management Initiatives

Sustainable business is a corporate priority that pursues sustainability by driving company initiatives in the social, economic and environmental fields outside of profit-seeking enterprise. In the early 21^st century, as demand for corporate social responsibility in the environmental field grew, sustainable business became a paradigm essential to a company’s survival. Samsung Electronics was no exception. Samsung marks its 50^th anniversary this year, and the company is continuing its best efforts to fulfill its duty as a global citizen in the areas of the environment, product responsibility, sustainable supply chains and social contribution. Samsung Newsroom is detailing the company’s sustainability-led activities in a dedicated series, beginning with the company’s environmentally friendly initiatives.

The importance of pursuing environmentally friendly activities for a company on the scale of Samsung Electronics cannot be underestimated in terms of the potential for leading the way in mitigating such global issues as climate change and resource depletion. For this reason, environment-related activities and initiatives lie at the heart of Samsung’s sustainable business practices.

Taking A Green Approach Since the 1990s

Since its Environment Declaration in 1992, Samsung Electronics has been managing its ‘green’ business in order to fulfill its environmental responsibilities understanding that any expense put towards fighting environmental issues is not an optional, but instead a necessary, corporate investment.

In 1998, the company established its own E-Waste Take-Back and Recycling Centers to promote the efficient use of waste products, pioneering this program in the domestic electronics industry. In 2004, the company advanced its development of environmentally friendly products by introducing the Eco-Design Process, an appraisal that assesses the energy efficiency, resource efficiency and environmental damage of a potential product right from the beginning of the product development cycle. In 2005, Samsung’s Environment Analysis Lab was established to put in place a system that keeps track of whether hazardous substances are included or not in a product’s development process, from specific parts and components through to completed products.

As a result of these initiatives, in 2009 Samsung was able to introduce Green Memory, a high-speed, low-power and highly reliable semiconductor solution. If all global servers were to implement the 5G Green Memory Solution as of 2014, 45 TWh of electricity would be saved overall annually, and the environmental effect would be equivalent to planting an additional 800 million 10-year-old trees. Samsung’s Quantum Dot TV, launched in 2016, was the first TV product to not use cadmium, a material found to be harmful to both the human body as well as the environment. Such competitive edges were maintained in the launch of the QLED TV in 2017 and QLED 8K in 2018, making Samsung a market leader in terms of industry innovation as well as sustainability.

Furthermore, Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program provides an alternative method for resource circulation by repurposing used smartphones as IoT devices with new functions. Efforts such as this that the company continues to propagate has led to global recognition, with the company winning the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s ‘Champion Award: Cutting Edge’ in 2017 for its game-changing work in electronics sustainability.

Samsung’s Practices on Sustainable Products and Business Operations

Since 2005’s Kyoto Protocol, brought about to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, Samsung has been accelerating its environmentally friendly endeavors in order to help reduce emissions. In 2009, Samsung announced its green business vision and intermediate goals in order to lead global response to this environmental regulation with a focus on low carbon emissions and ‘green’ growth.

From 2009 to 2018, the use of high-efficiency products saw the company reduce its accumulated greenhouse gas emissions by 243.1 million tons. This is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of 1.5 billion people’s refrigerator usage over the span of an entire year.¹ By establishing a circular resource economy system, as of last year 54 countries participated in taking back end-of-life products from Samsung customers. About 3.55 million tons of e-waste was collected cumulatively from the take-back program between 2009 and 2018. In addition, an accumulated amount of 220,000 tons of recycled plastic went back into Samsung products in the same time period.

With 216 business bases in 74 countries, Samsung not only works on managing the environmental impact of its products, but also on developing environmentally friendly business establishments. In June 2018, Samsung announced its goal to use 100% renewable energy across all its establishments in the US, Europe and China by 2020, as well as to install 63,000 m² of solar and geothermal power facilities in Korea. In October 2018, Samsung’s U.S. headquarters, as well as all US Device Solution manufacturing plants converted to using energy from 100% renewable sources, and the company’s Slovakian worksites have since followed suit.

[Tech Lab Notes] Inside the Galaxy A80’s Revolutionary Rotating Camera

A camera that rotates presents itself as the perfect camera solution for smartphone users in the Era of Live as not only can it expand the rear camera experience to front-facing pictures and videos¹, but it can also allow for a true full-screen experience for users to fully engage in their favorite content.

And so, Samsung brought its first rotating camera module to the Galaxy A80.

What Goes Around, Comes Around

Developing a smartphone with a rotating camera was a unique challenge. Existing technologies dictated that in order for a camera to slide up and then rotate from within its device, two motors would be required – an impossible addition to a smartphone given the amount of space for parts this would require.

In order to mitigate this, Samsung developed a solution requiring no extra motor parts that also ensures no premature rotation occurs, thanks to a mechanism complete with locking ‘teeth’, rail and hook. These innovative technologies then entailed an optimization of the motor to ensure it could power the camera’s vertical slide and rotation.

Captivating Camera Quality

The Galaxy A80’s rear camera module features a 48MP Main camera, an Ultra Wide angle lens camera and a 3D Depth camera so that users can capture any moment just as they see it. And when users select selfie mode in the camera app, the rotating camera mechanism brings a powerful triple camera experience to front-facing pictures and videos, too.

In addition to this hardware innovation, Samsung’s engineers understood that using the same lenses for both front and rear perspectives would require optimization of the camera module, as the functionalities of these camera perspectives are different. Therefore, the Galaxy A80’s camera software has been optimized to ensure that the picture quality of the camera is suitable for rear-taken, landscape shots as well as close-up, undistorted selfie pictures.

Ensuring Exceptional Camera Experiences

In order to assess whether these solutions could withstand extensive use for each and every spontaneous selfie moment, the Galaxy A80’s rotating camera underwent full and thorough testing at a dedicated Samsung lab.

Galaxy A80 devices were put through a multitude of quality-testing use case scenarios designed to verify that the hardware and software innovations of the device were able to consistently provide the best camera experience possible, even after extensive use.

Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom Advance in Bringing Korea Closer to 5G Standalone Commercialization

Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) today announced the successful completion of Korea’s first interoperability assessment between 5G Standalone (SA) Core and other commercial network systems over a 5G network. This successful result brings the two companies one step closer to 5G SA commercialization.

The 5G SA Core, jointly developed by Samsung Electronics and SK Telecom, not only supports technologies including network slicing and function modularization based on 3GPP standards, but also offers additional functions that operators have been using since LTE, include billing, subscriber management and operational convenience system. The interoperability assessment is the final stage for verifying the validity of 5G SA data transmission, signifying that the SA system is ready to be launched for commercial service.

Both companies implemented several cutting-edge technologies in the 5G SA Core that has been used for the interoperability. The technologies include Data Parallel Processing technology that performs QoS and transmission control simultaneously; Data Acceleration technology that classifies and distributes similar traffic types; and Path Optimization technology that automatically delivers data traffic to Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) platform.

“The fundamental structure of 5G SA is built on a completely new configuration, successfully delivering the most optimized 5G service to customers and enterprises across numerous industries,” said Jaeho Jeon, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Maintaining Korea’s leadership in network innovations through continuous investments in next-generation technologies is important to Samsung and SK Telecom, and the companies will continue to collaborate on developing and commercializing 5G SA.”

“Along with the initial phase of NSA rollout, we have been continuously focusing on researching and developing the SA technology in order to provide customers a differentiated service quality with innovative products, which will be launched in the first half of next year,” said Park Jin-hyo, Chief Technology Officer and Head of ICT R&D Center at SK Telecom. “By strengthening bilateral collaboration with Samsung, SK Telecom will drive and lead highly innovative 5G technologies and solutions.”

Once 5G SA is commercialized, data processing efficient will be improved by threefold, allowing efficient control for supporting massive data traffic. Moreover, 5G SA system is highly optimized for emerging next generation services such as Autonomous driving, Smart Factory, Smart Farm, and AR/VR.

For the past five years, the two companies have been collaborating on LTE and 5G development, which ultimately led to this successful 5G SA Core interoperability test. Some of other accomplishments include the commercialization of Virtualized LTE Core and Packet Optimization system; and they have completed the development of 3GPP Rel. 15 based SA Core in July last year, and successfully launched 5G NSA commercial service in April this year.

Samsung Electronics Launches “Make the Wave” Music Campaign at FINA 2019

Samsung Electronics, an official sponsor of the 18^th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019, has launched the “Make the Wave” campaign to encourage athletes and also inspire their fans by connecting them through inspiring music, based on its brand philosophy, “Do What You Can’t”.

Samsung Electronics appointed Simone Manuel as the ambassador for this year’s campaign, to encourage sports fans from all over the world to share music through social media. Simone Manuel won a gold medal and set an Olympic record in the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. As Samsung Electronics’ ambassador for the event, she will share a message of encouragement and discuss pushing boundaries without losing hope amid difficult circumstances, as well as talk about the songs and the music that inspire her and help boost her performance.

As part of the campaign, special events are planned for aspiring swimmers in Gwangju city. Students will be provided with a chance to be escorts for the water polo finals. They will also meet Kim Se-jin, an accomplished swimmer better known as the “robotic leg swimmer,” who was a member of South Korea’s national disabled swimming team.

“This campaign is designed to spread the heat of the competition with a variety of marketing activities, to share the stories of swimmers who are challenging themselves in working toward their dreams, and to cheer on one another through music, powered by our brand philosophy of ‘Do What You Can’t,’” said Younghee Lee, Global CMO at Samsung Electronics. “I hope that everyone will enjoy the events throughout our ‘Make the Wave’ campaign.”

About 7,266 aquatic sports athletes, officials, media, and International Swimming Federation officials from 193 countries have registered, an all-time high. Samsung’s Commitment to Our Workers in Global Operations

– The report claimed that Samsung underpaid employees in the India and Indonesia factories. At all of our worksites, employees – including contract workers – are paid above the minimum wage and the levels set by law. They are also provided with an appropriate level of benefits and leaves. – The report said employees at Samsung’s facilities had not been aware of chemical substances used in the production process. Samsung makes information about chemicals, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), available and provides training for employees who handle chemicals, in full compliance with the laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate.

– The report alleged that an employee death at Samsung’s Thai Nguyen plant in Vietnam in 2016 was potentially related to overworking and chemical exposure. We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former colleague and extend our sincere condolences to the family. The working hours and conditions during her four-month employment complied with regulations, while an investigation by the Vietnamese authorities showed that her cause of death was not related to her employment at our factory.

– The report claimed that Samsung provides commuting buses, dormitory housing and other benefits as means to control employees and their behavior. That is simply not true. The benefits we provide support employees by giving them commuting and housing options. We also offer opportunities for continuous development both in and outside of work. This is what makes Samsung a great place to work, earning us recognition in many different countries.

We would also like to share a few examples of initiatives and programs that we have in place to ensure our compliance with global standards and regulations:

– Samsung Electronics is a member of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) and we conform to the RBA Code of Conduct and its implementation methods, including due diligence across the company and our suppliers.

– In 2010, we established the Samsung Health Research Institute, which conducts research on work environment, manufacturing processes and materials to enhance our health and safety measures.

– Samsung has several guidelines in place to protect apprentices, trainees, immigrants and temporary workers. Due diligence and consulting with outside experts is conducted on a regular basis to monitor issues and prevent any potential human rights violations.

– Over 2018 – 2019, Samsung collaborated with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) – a global non-profit organization specializing in human rights – to conduct a Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) for Samsung Electronics Vietnam. Samsung is using the findings to put even more measures in place to improve employee health and safety, and pre-empt any potential issues.

– All of our worksites globally are obligated to follow the EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) and the EU’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) standards. We also provide regular training for employees who handle chemicals and conduct routine inspections of chemical storage and facilities management.

We have been operating manufacturing facilities in Vietnam, India and Indonesia for decades and the combined workforce in the three countries exceeds 100,000. We are proud that our success has allowed us to contribute to and become more integrated in the local communities. This growth would not have been possible if we had relied on sub-standard working practices.

We strive to meet the highest standards in employee health and safety everywhere. But despite our best efforts, unfortunate incidents can still occur in managing work hours and ensuring subcontractors meet safety standards. If and when compliance issues arise, we analyze and quickly pursue improvement measures to help prevent recurrence.

We also believe in promoting the rights of employees. Samsung’s labor and human rights policies value and embrace international human rights principles and standards, and the laws of the countries in which we conduct business.

In conformance to local law, employees have the right to form and join or not to join trade unions of their own choosing, to bargain collectively and to engage in peaceful assembly, as well as the right to refrain from such activities. We regret that there were issues in the past where our employees’ rights to organize were not fully respected.

We will strive to continuously improve our standards because we believe the success of our business comes from the success of our people.

Hospitalized Students Granted State Diplomas Through Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ Program

On June 22^nd graduates of Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ remote learning program received their high school diplomas from Russian Education Minister Olga Vasilieva in Moscow. The ‘Hope for Children’ project provides students with full access to the state educational curriculum through digital learning tools in hospitals where paper books are prohibited for hygienic purposes.

The ‘Hope for Children’ program seeks to address the fact that 120,000-130,000 Russian and CIS children undergo long-term, in-house medical treatment every year, and are not able to attend school. Classes are held in specially designed hospital classrooms as well as individually in cases where the child is unable to attend lessons in the classroom. Present at the graduation ceremony, the program head Sergey Sharikov said: “Staying in the hospital does not mean that children need to stop learning. Children definitely need to learn, interact with other kids and be engaged in creative processes.”





Minister Vasilieva presented diplomas in Samsung ‘Hope for Children’ branded folders to 40 ninth and eleventh graders during the graduation ceremony at Dmitry Rogachev Children’s Hospital, which in 2014 became the pilot site for Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ remote learning initiative. The Russian Education Ministry’s Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science has granted ‘Hope for Children’ exceptional permission allowing students to take state exams through the project. This measure empowers children unable to attend school for extended periods of time to keep up with the state exams and gain university entrance along with their peers.





The Dmitry Rogachev Children’s Hospital was built by executive order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and enters around 2,000 children from more than 85 regions into the ‘Hope for Children’ program each year. Expansion of the program has been widespread, with 17 new locations introduced across Russia and other CIS countries since 2014, and three more to be added by 2020.

Other attendants of the graduation ceremony included Alexander Rumyantsev, President of the Dmitry Rogachev National Research Center, Galina Novichkova, General Director of the Center, Evgeny Yamburg, Director of The Yamburg School, and Arina Sharapova, TV Anchor and ‘Hope for Children’ project ambassador. In a special announcement, the ceremony’s organizers expressed their immense “gratitude and appreciation” to Samsung for its long-term partnership on the project.

Speaking at the graduation, Sergey Pevnev, Director of PA and Corporate Projects at Samsung Electronics CIS remarked that “Hope for Children’s mission is to allow children receiving long-term medical treatment to continue learning, be creative, interact with their peers, and – at the end – get diplomas.” He went on to point out that “Samsung’s technological solutions open up additional opportunities for students, and allow them to master the school program in an exciting, interactive format.”

Seoul After Sunset: The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, In Pictures

There’s something special about the way cities look in the nighttime. Once the day draws to an end, our favorite cityscapes come alive and we often find ourselves itching to capture the scenes in front of us with our smartphones. But without a camera able to take on the nuances and challenges of nighttime photography, this undertaking can be a fruitless one.

The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode is the perfect tool for capturing photos after the sun has gone down. Accessible from the Camera app, Night Mode can be manually toggled on and off whenever you wish to use it in the Camera app’s sliding menu. Compared with photos taken without it switched on, Night Mode minimizes the noise from a dark environment to enhance a photo’s details and corrects colors, along with other image qualities, to make the resulting low-light shots more vivid.



Samsung Newsroom traveled to some of the top landmarks around Seoul after dark to see how the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode can bring out every detail in a nighttime scene, even in low light conditions.

A Palace for All Hours of the Day

Deoksu Palace is one of Seoul’s four ancient palaces, drawing visitors keen to take in its striking architecture day and night.

Junghwajeon, one of the royal courts of Deoksu Palace, was built in 1902 and has a remarkable golden exterior featuring intricate patterns, colors and textures that are not easy to capture at night. However, by simply turning on Night Mode on the Galaxy S10+, all the courts’ details come to life, thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent gradation adjustment that brings vibrancy to pictures taken after dark. Try using a tripod to level the top and bottom of the frame for an ever better shot of the ancient palace that captures every striking detail.

While the Galaxy range’s Night Mode function previously only automatically activated when conditions were very dark (below 1 lux), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode now allows users to make the most out of it as they can manually switch it on or off and use it for lighter nighttime scenes.

Stand-Out Statues Amid City Life

Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza, often bustling with pedestrians, is a place where the traditional and the modern come together. Neon lights from the buildings that flag it, along with the bright lights of passing cars, make up a vibrant patchwork of color during the nighttime, but can easily drown out the statues at the Plaza’s heart in pictures.

Thanks to the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, the two statues that sit right at the heart of downtown Seoul (Admiral Yi Sun-sin, first picture, Sejong the Great, second picture) can be captured without any compromise to the eclectic lighting of their surroundings. Night Mode lowers camera sensitivity and decreases shutter speed, capturing bright lighting well despite the high contrast. Paired with the Ultra Wide lens of the Galaxy S10 line, Night Mode provides after-dark shots that can capture everything in the camera’s field of vision.

When Urban Meets Rural

Naksan Park in northern Seoul features vistas that include a striking contrast between the area’s historic fortress wall, idyllic mountain views and the nighttime bustle of downtown Seoul.

But Galaxy S10+ users need not worry about losing any detail when capturing close (first picture) or wide (second picture) shots of scenes with such subject contrast. Without Night Mode switched on, distinct features of the landscape would be lost, with city lights obscuring lower contrast areas such as the striking mountainous terrains in the far distance. But just by switching Night Mode on, you can maximize the visibility of your shot thanks to its intelligent noise reduction that balances different areas of contrast and light to cleanly bring out a shot’s every aspect – even in low-light conditions.

Sunset By the River

The Hangang Riverside Park lights up as the sun goes down, and the variety of different lighting attractions on display reflect in the Han River to often dazzling effect. Yet capturing this display of light from a variety of different light sources, from the natural light of the fading sun to the colorful façade of the Hangang Floating Islands, can present a challenge when looking to achieve balance in twilight pictures.

With the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, pictures emerge more vibrantly thanks to its auto color-correcting software, resulting in bright and clean shots that carefully negotiate all the different sources of light on offer. For an even more vivid take, users can alter Night Mode’s settings for lower exposure correction to capitalize on the darker aspects of a scene – without losing any of the color or detail.

Bird’s Eye Views

Seoul’s Namsan Tower sits an impressive 479.7 meters above sea level, offering visitors a scenic, near-panoramic view of the city which comes to life as the sun sets.

One of Namsan Tower’s best offerings to visitors is the opportunity it presents for you to capture shots of the sprawling city that lies below it – as well as of the striking tower itself against a diverse backdrop. But cloudy weather conditions add more disruptive photographic noise to pictures that obscures the details of a shot, especially for long-distance vistas.

The Bixby Marketplace is Now Officially Open in the inthe U.S and Korea

The Bixby Marketplace is a one-stop shop for users to browse and add a wide range of services (known as capsules) to enhance their Bixby experience.

This new platform is now open to users in U.S. and Korea. The Bixby Marketplace’s official launch lays the foundation for an open ecosystem of useful services that developers will continuously enrich, and users will be able to make their mobile experience more personal and intuitive.

The key to Bixby’s convenience is simple: customization. Samsung’s intelligence platform is designed to learn what you like to do, and then work with your favorite apps and services to help you get more done—faster.

The Bixby Marketplace takes these customized experiences to the next level by offering easy access to a wide range of capsules that make Bixby more powerful, making it easier for users to tailor Bixby to suit their needs. The Marketplace includes a variety of convenience-enhancing capsules such as Google Maps, Spotify, iHeartRadio, NPR, Yelp and more.

How It Works

Users access the Bixby Marketplace from the Bixby main page. Once the user launches the Bixby main page by pressing the Bixby key, they swipe left to get to the Bixby Marketplace. Capsules are organized by categories such as Productivity, Business and Finance, Sports, Shopping, etc.

Searching by capsule name, developer or keyword makes it easy to find the capsules you need, while curated staff picks and user reviews highlight capsules that users will find particularly useful. Capsules can be added with a single tap of a button, and users can also rate and review capsules to ensure the highest quality Bixby capsules are the most visible to users in the Bixby Marketplace.

To add even more customization, users can set a capsule as the “preferred capsule” for certain types of requests. For example, if a user says “Get me a ride to San Francisco airport”, Bixby will prompt the user to pick one of the supported Rideshare capsules. Users will have the option to set their favorite provider as their preferred Rideshare capsule. Once that is set, any Rideshare request would automatically go to the user’s preferred provider, even if the user does not mention the capsule name. The ability for users to customize their own personal Bixby experience allows them to easily incorporate a wide range of capsules into their everyday lives.

What’s Next?

Samsung will continue to improve the Bixby platform and evolve the Bixby Marketplace to support developer needs and enhance the experience for all our users. Developers will continue to add more capsules to the Bixby Marketplace over the next few months.
