Review: iON Wireless Go Power Bank from iOttie

The folks at iOttie have been on the forefront of using colorful fabrics to accessorize their accessories. They provided me with a review unit of their iON Wireless Go Power Bank ($49.95) to try, and sure enough, it is as stylish as it is useful. It is a portable battery pack for iPhones that is just smaller than an iPhone SE or iPhone 8 but twice as thick.  The first thing you notice is the attractive woven fabric (red or grey) that covers the surface. It looks nice on your coffee table and the cloth won't scratch your naked iPhone, although there is a rubber pad where the integrated Qi charging coil is.

You can charge up to three devices at once, using the Qi pad, a USB-A port and a USB-C port, as long as you have the right cables. The iON power bank comes with a color-matched USB-C to USB-A cable so you can charge the device itself. Another nice touch is the LED numeric display to show percentage of battery life. It is hidden behind the fabric so it disappears when not in use and makes for a nice effect.The battery has a decent 10,000 mAh and puts out 18 watts. As with most portable Qi chargers, you need to press a button to enable Qi charging because otherwise it would be consuming a little bit of power all the time, and would run out sooner. I've found the iOttie to hold a charge for weeks.

Review: IonGo 5K Duo Portable Battery with Integrated Cables

Sometimes you need just a little more power, but carrying around a heavy 10,000 mAh power pack is overkill. For those times, the IonGo 5K Duo Portable Battery ($74.95) from Moshi might be the perfect companion. Moshi sent me a review unit and it is compact and comfortable to the touch and stylish, thanks to the hand-stitched vegan leather exterior and aluminum accents, common with many of Moshi's accessories.

I really appreciated the integrated Lightning and USB-C cables that tuck away. Those are two less things to worry about remembering or losing. It doesn't have a huge battery life, but the 5,000 mAh of power should charge your iPhone a couple of times. It can also charge USB-C based devices since the integrated USB-C cable is bidirectional. It's not cheap; but the size and style mean you're more likely to bring it with you, in which case it could be a lifesaver.

Review: SecureUSB BT Flash Drive for iPhone

I previously reviewed the SecureDrive from SecureData and found it to offer impressive security and high-speed SSD storage, but I also felt it was expensive. The folks at SecureData sent me their lower-cost USB flash drive model which starts at a much more affordable price. The SecureUSB BT (starting at $119) comes with less capacity, 16 GB, but the company offers 32 and 64 GB options. Sure, they are more expensive than traditional thumb drives but they have some serious security built-in.

The drives conform to federal standards, namely FIPS 140 and AES 256-bit encryption. Good luck trying to crack that. Plus they are waterproof to one meter and a layer of epoxy is placed over the electronics which, should make tampering difficult. The data is only accessible when you open the free companion app and then you can authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID. This is known as MFA (multi-factor authentication or two factor authentication); you need not only a password, but also a trusted paired device. It works well, and you can use the same app to unlock multiple SecureData devices. 

The storage size of the thumb drives is small, but I would not recommend using these drives in a traditional manner. Keep videos, music, and other large files on regular drives or in the cloud. Use the thumb drive for confidential intellectual property like software source code, financial spreadsheets, contracts,presentations. and related documents.
