Instagram Updates IGTV with New Discover Tab, Brings Creators to the Forefront

Instagram is not going to give up on its IGTV app yet. Today the company has updated IGTV in a bid to rope in more people and persuade creators to make long-format videos. The homepage is now changed and will feature a creator on top. The Creator content on the home screen will be populated based on users’ choice and liking.

That apart IGTV is also getting a much needed Discover Tab. As the name suggests, the feature helps users discover videos from people that they follow. Furthermore, the section will also show popular videos based on user preference. Until now the app lacked the discovery tab and this meant the users had to search for content manually. With the help of Discover Tab, new IGTV users will find it convenient to follow users and access their videos.

IGTV users will now be able to post a 15-seconds trailer on Instagram stories. Previously, you were only allowed to post a thumbnail of the video. Instagram hopes this will encourage people to check out IGTV and in turn generate more views for the creators.

Instagram announced IGTV in 2018 and ever since the response seems to be lukewarm. The company has not revealed how many use IGTV. That being said, the app is downloaded more than 10 million times on Apple Store. Meanwhile, Instagram is focussing on getting content creators to create long-form videos that are engaging. They are also trying hard to get Instagram users on IGTV and has thus allowed various forms of cross-posting.

Samsung to Introduce ‘Eco-Packaging’ for Its Lifestyle TV Lineup

Samsung Electronics today announced it will introduce a new eco-friendly packaging across its Lifestyle TV product portfolio in efforts to reduce the environmental footprint.

Samsung’s new ‘eco-packaging’ made from eco-friendly corrugated cardboard will be applied to The Serif, The Frame and The Sero, allowing customers easier recycling as well as upcycling of the cardboard boxes for creative reuse.

Samsung has applied a dot matrix design on each side of its eco-friendly corrugated cardboard boxes, allowing customers to cut the boxes more easily and assemble them into various other uses, such as small end tables or houses for pets.

Included within the packaging is a manual to guide customers on how to make household items out of the cardboard boxes, which can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the box.

Owners of The Serif who tend to put shelves and furniture around the TV can build cat houses, magazine racks and even shelves from the cardboard boxes to store household items and electronic devices, including the remote control.

Earlier this year, Samsung had already won CES 2020 Innovation Awards for its eco-packaging concept for promoting the efficient use of resources.

As part of the rollout of the new eco-packaging, Samsung and Dezeen, a British lifestyle magazine, will hold a global design competition starting April 6th, where the two companies will award the most unique and practical designs and will apply the designs into its eco-packaging manual.

“Consumers are more likely to purchase from a brand that shares similar fundamentals and values as they do, and with our eco-packaging, we believe that we can provide our customers with a new experience that considers the environment as an important way to express themselves,” said Kangwook Chun, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Strategy Team of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

For more information on the design competition, please visit Dezeen’s website at www.dezeen.com and Samsung TV Instagram(@samsungtv).

Samsung Demonstrates World’s First MCPTX Video Call on AWS

Samsung Electronics today announced a demonstration of the world’s first video call on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform using Mission Critical Push-to Talk, Data and Video (MCPTX, also known as Mission Critical Communications), a communications capability developed for first responders. It was enabled by the successful onboarding, integration and deployment on AWS cloud. This implementation was based on 3GPP Release 14 specifications.

The demonstration, conducted at Samsung’s lab in Korea, featured a complete line-up of Samsung’s latest MCPTX solutions, which delivers a multimedia-based communications experience designed specifically for first responders and public safety officials. It used Samsung’s MCPTX service platform, as well as the Samsung Galaxy XCover FieldPro – a rugged, secure first responder smartphone, purpose-built for public safety users – to show the power of mission critical multimedia communications in the field.

Samsung’s customers for MCPTX will have the option to deploy the solution on their on-premise servers or AWS cloud platform.

New Horizons in Public Safety

MCPTX delivers powerful data and video communications capabilities surpassing Land Mobile Radio (LMR) technology, which provides traditional voice-based service. It opens a new horizon in advancing public safety, enabling first responders to be simultaneously connected with hundreds of fellow responders with easy exchange of videos, images, files and more during an emergency. This technology will help improve situational awareness and information accuracy, especially in times when public safety plays a pivotal role against local disasters or urgent threats.

Cloud-Based Benefits

The demonstration also highlights the key benefits that public cloud networks can bring to an MCPTX deployment. This approach enables rapid deployment and improves scalability and flexibility of public safety networks for operators, by reducing the time spent on in-house data center deployment and allowing them to adjust the usage of resources as needed. Also, the service can seamlessly failover to another part of the cloud as needed, increasing overall reliability.

“AWS offers a proven infrastructure with the greatest scalability, which enables network operators to offer reliable 5G services that will continue to scale, even during the greatest capacity strains.” said Amir Rao, Head of Global Solution Portfolio and Tech Alliances for Telco industry at AWS. “AWS offers a ubiquitous cloud programming model through its public availability zones and AWS Outpost services, which can be deployed at the Telco Operators data center or network edge locations. This demonstration of Samsung’s MCPTX solution on Amazon’s cloud platform brings the latest innovations to the public safety sector, and the two companies will continue to collaborate on developing technologies to provide new and reliable services to customers.”

“This demonstration showcases how Samsung’s Mission Critical Communications solutions can manage public crises and be readily deployed on public cloud platforms,” said Wonil Roh, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Strategy, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “It also enables us to learn and adapt to the evolving needs of service providers and end users alike. This brings a new level of broad coverage, scalability and reliability to mission critical service deployments, and we look forward to continuing our journey in the public safety sector to help keep communities safe and improve public emergency response outcomes.”

Our Response to COVID-19

To the global Samsung community,

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe, our thoughts are with each and every one of you. We know this situation has affected each of you differently and that COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on our society. Despite this challenging time, we also see hope in our resilience. We are demonstrating how, as a global community, we can come together – regardless of location or circumstance – to address what may be one of the most important challenges of our lifetimes.

In navigating these uncertain times, Samsung has an important role to look after our employees, support our customers, and aid our communities. We are dedicating resources to help those in need and help us, as a society, emerge stronger on the other side.

Supporting Our Global Workforce

We have established regional response teams around the world to provide our employees with resources and updates on the latest guidelines from health authorities. We have restricted business travel to only mission-critical journeys and have strongly advised employees to work from home where possible. Additionally, we have closed some of our facilities and stores to support social distancing efforts, where necessary.

In offices and facilities that are critical to providing users with the products and services they need, we have mandated health screenings and temperature checks prior to entry and have implemented regular deep cleaning. Across the world, we are considering ways to help our employees and their families that have been impacted by this pandemic.

We will continue to do everything we can to protect our people, who have been the core of our business.

Serving Our Valued Customers and Partners

The relationships that we have built with our customers and partners over the past 50 years are of paramount importance to us.

As our daily lives shift to working and learning from home, we are here to support you and your family with products and services that enable you to keep life moving and connected to those you love. We are here to support you online at Samsung.com with round-the-clock customer care. For customers whose manufacturer warranty expires while our services are unavailable due to restrictions caused by COVID-19, we are offering a one-month extension from the date repair services become available again*.

Giving Back to Our Communities

Since January, Samsung has donated USD 29 million worth of funds and goods to governments and communities that have been most affected by COVID-19 to help with their relief efforts, including the purchase of medical supplies and hygiene kits, such as face masks. We are donating smartphones to patients in quarantine to help them keep in touch with their families and friends, as well as air purifiers and other appliances to hospitals and quarantine centers. We are also donating tablets to educational institutions so that children can continue to learn outside of the classroom, and are making our CSR education modules available online so that children have access to more enriching content at home.

In Korea, among the first countries hit, we provided local authorities a company facility to operate as a care center for patients to assist with the country’s containment efforts. Also, our engineering teams are working with companies in Korea that produce face masks to help them boost production by improving factory layouts and manufacturing processes, and in some cases, are creating molds for mask production. Because of our efforts, one of the companies was able to more than double its daily production.

We will continue to use our technology and resources to address the urgent needs of those working to combat the threat and impact of COVID-19. This is based on one unwavering principle that has guided us through our history: to create technology that contributes to a better global society.

Now, more than ever, we must band together to not only overcome this challenge, but emerge stronger, together. This is a challenging time for us all and we will continue to share updates with you as the situation evolves. For now, we sincerely thank every one of our employees for all they are doing, and, in particular, for the support they are providing to each other, to our partners and to our customers.

To our customers, partners, and communities, we are grateful for your loyal support, and we promise to stand strong with you as we all look ahead to a promising future.

From all of us at Samsung, we wish you, your families, and your friends stay strong and in good health.

[The Future of Viewing] ① QLED 8K: Where AI Upscaling Meets Deep Learning

In recent times, screen picture quality has transcended high definition – these days, it’s all about ultra-high definition. Although today’s hardware has been developed to support not just 4K content but 8K content as well, only recently has content begun to actually be produced to 8K quality standards. Therefore, in order to improve the video display quality of content made before 8K existed, upscaling technology exists to keep up with today’s ultra-high definition standard.

Samsung Electronics’ 2020 QLED 8K TV lineup continuously receives praise for its devices’ innovative display quality, sound, design and many other areas. In particular, the range showcases an impressive evolution with regards to its video upscaling technology, at the core of which is Samsung’s AI Quantum Processor 8K.

Samsung Newsroom interviewed the team from the Picture Quality Solution Lab of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business to learn more about this revolutionary technology.

(From left) Hyungjun Lim, Hyunseung Lee, Cheon Lee and Seungho Park of the Picture Quality Solution Lab of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business

Leveling Up Deep Learning for Optimized Upscaling

When a low-resolution video plays on a high-resolution display, the resulting image quality can be below a viewer’s expectations. AI (artificial intelligence) upscaling is a technology that converts low-resolution videos into ones of more vivid and natural resolutions by analyzing the video data and adapting it intelligently.

In 2018, Samsung Electronics implemented its machine learning-based AI 8K upscaling technology for the first time. This technology harnesses machine learning wherein a human-designed algorithm intelligently analyzes the various video qualities, including line, light and color, and improves each of these for an improved display resolution. Such deep learning capabilities permit a TV to analyze and process video features whilst simultaneously learning thanks to an artificial neural network that acts in the same way as the human brain.

The members of Samsung’s Picture Quality Solution Lab focused on developing deep learning algorithms that enable displays to always showcase optimum video qualities without human intervention. “Deep learning enables more precise and efficient image quality improvements than can be achieved by humans alone,” noted Hyungjun Lim, who developed the AI upscaling technology’s texture generation method.

This operational advantage is what led the team to develop an AI upscaling technology that combines machine learning with deep learning – Samsung’s AI Quantum Processor 8K. “Previous machine learning technology brought about enhanced sharpness to display picture quality, but now our technology can also offer more delicate texturing,” noted Hyunseung Lee, who developed enhanced edge sharpness for the AI Quantum Processor 8K. “Images with complicated textures, like mountain or grass landscapes, can now be upscaled into 8K quality more naturally.”

Solving the Conundrum of Deep Learning

Although deep learning has limitless potential, there are still obstacles to be overcome. The Picture Quality Solution Lab team had to go through countless trial-and-error scenarios in order to make their technology market-ready. “It was difficult for us, at first, to clearly follow and comprehend the algorithm being developed by the artificial neural network of the processor,” highlighted Cheon Lee, the developer of the AI Quantum Processor 8K’s network structure and learning method. “The artificial neural network’s high hardware chip power consumption was an issue we had to solve, too.”

After a lengthy development process, Samsung was eventually able to solve the problems that had arisen thanks to its range of differentiated technologies. “We achieved the highly efficient display quality performance of our processor by making it a hybrid technology that combines complexity along with different aspects of deep learning and machine learning,” explained Lee.

Dreaming Bigger, Better and More Realistic with AI

It wasn’t that long ago that the day-to-day application of AI-powered technologies was but a distant dream to us. Nowadays, technology has improved rapidly to the end of improving the lives of people across many different areas of everyday life.

“We are now able to categorize videos of differing quality levels in a more detailed way while also bringing these AI categorization technologies to the commercial market,” noted Seungho Park, who worked the AI Quantum Processor 8K’s noise elimination and improving the detail contrast range. “Such technologies permit next-generation displays, such as The Wall, to be able to showcase all kinds of videos at the most realistic qualities possible today.”

This AI-powered innovation is not just limited to upscaling technologies. There exist a variety of ways to harness AI to improve the screen qualities of displays, including video quality categorization, noise elimination, data-compression-caused distortion restoration and spatial or time-based resolution restoration, to name just a few. “Our goal is to continue Samsung’s legacy of providing leading TV viewing experiences by combining the advantages of our next-generation displays with AI technologies that can restore videos to realistic-level qualities, regardless of their original qualities and resolutions,” affirmed Park. The future of QLED 8K is looking bright.

The award recognizes EPA partner businesses and organizations in good standing that demonstrate superior leadership, innovation, and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR.

This is Samsung’s 12th Partner of the Year recognition and 7th time achieving the Sustained Excellence Award for its environmental stewardship exhibited through producing energy-efficient appliances and technology as well as for engaging customers, employees and students about the value of environmental protection and energy savings. For Samsung, ENERGY STAR is also a symbol of economic development and investment in the U.S. manufacturing base. At the state-of-the-art facility in Newberry, SC, every washer produced is ENERGY STAR-certified. This includes innovative front load and top load machines that not only save energy but deliver time savings, increased capacity, stronger cleaning performance and stylish design.

“Samsung takes its responsibility to care for our communities and environment seriously and values our partnership with ENERGY STAR,” said Shane Higby, Vice President for Home Appliance Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “While many of the company’s efforts around energy efficiency are focused on manufacturing of home appliances, our work also extends to product training efforts as well as investments in environmental education initiatives. Samsung remains committed to energy efficiency innovation while minimizing our environmental impact.”

As of 2019, 33 of Samsung’s products were designated by the EPA as Most Efficient. Including savings driven by ENERGY STAR certification, overall product efficiency improvements have helped our customers avoid an estimated 243 million tons of CO2 emissions through the use of Samsung products since 2009.

In 2016, Samsung also won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Innovative Refrigerant Systems and in 2013, Samsung won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Clothes Dryers.

“I salute the 2020 ENERGY STAR award winners,” said Anne Idsal, EPA Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “These leaders demonstrate how energy efficiency drives economic competitiveness in tandem with environmental protection.”

The highest honor among ENERGY STAR awards is the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award. EPA presents the Sustained Excellence Award to partners that have already received ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition. Winners hail from small, family-owned businesses to Fortune 500 organizations—representing energy-efficient products, services, new homes, and buildings in the commercial, industrial, and public sectors.

Director at Samsung AI Center Receives 2020 ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar Award

Samsung AI Center Cambridge Director Dr. Nicholas Lane has been awarded the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) SIGMOBILE Rockstar Award for 2020. The international award was founded in 2013, and recognizes an individual who has produced outstanding research or product contributions in the area of mobile computing early in their career.

The ACM is the high-profile academic organization that presents the prestigious Turing Award, and SIGMOBILE is ACM’s international special interest group on the topics of mobile computing, wireless networks and wearable computing. SIGMOBILE’s Rockstar Award is awarded to an individual who makes outstanding contributions to the field of mobile computing within 10 years of receiving their highest university degree or at an age younger than 40. Entrants are nominated by their peers, before an award committee that includes past award winners screens nominees and selects that year’s recipient. 2020 marks the first time that a professor from a university outside of the United States has won SIGMOBILE’s Rockstar Award.

Dr. Nicholas Lane is a Director at the Samsung AI Center in Cambridge where he oversees teams that work on on-device and distributed machine learning. In recent years he has focused primarily on developing deep learning for modeling human activity and context, as well as enabling state-of-the-art signal processing and modeling algorithms to work efficiently on embedded and mobile-class hardware. Commenting on why Dr. Lane was chosen to receive the honor, the committee said the award recognized “his contributions to the understanding of how resource-constrained mobile devices can robustly understand, reason and react to complex user behaviors and environments through new paradigms in learning algorithms and system design.”

Speaking about receiving SIGMOBILE’s 2020 Rockstar Award, Dr. Lane said, “I am delighted and honored to have received this award. I feel very fortunate to have worked with many wonderfully talented researchers over the years, and this award is a reflection of these collaborative efforts. I believe it is also a signal of the growing importance of on-device machine learning, and I look forward to doing my part to keep Samsung at the forefront of this rapidly evolving technology.”
