Samsung Takes Mobile Photography to the Next Level with Industry’s First 108Mp Image Sensor for Smartphones

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced 108 megapixel (Mp) Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, the first mobile image sensor in the industry to go beyond 100 million pixels. With the latest addition, Samsung will expand its 0.8μm image sensor offerings from its recently announced ultra-high 64Mp to 108Mp, a resolution equivalent to that of a high-end DSLR camera. Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is a one-of-a-kind mobile image sensor and is the result of close collaboration between Xiaomi Corp. and Samsung.

With over 100 million effective pixels enabling extremely sharp photographs rich in detail, the ISOCELL Bright HMX also produces exceptional photos even in extreme lighting conditions. Being the first mobile image sensor to adopt a large 1/1.33-inch size, the HMX can absorb more light in low-lit settings than smaller sensors and its pixel-merging Tetracell technology allows the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors, producing brighter 27Mp images. In bright environments, the Smart-ISO, a mechanism that intelligently selects the level of amplifier gains according to the illumination of the environment for optimal light-to-electric signal conversion, switches to a low ISO to improve pixel saturation and produce vivid photographs. The mechanism uses a high ISO in darker settings that helps reduce noise, resulting in clearer pictures. For advanced filming, the HMX supports video recording without losses in field-of-view at resolutions up to 6K (6016 x 3384) 30-frames-per-second (fps).

“Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology.”

Mass production for Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX will begin later this month.

Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 5G Earns First Place Distinction in DxOMark’s Selfie Camera, Rear Cameras and Video Rankings

 

Samsung Electronics today announced that the new Galaxy Note10+ 5G has received the number one ranking on the DxOMark both front facing and rear facing cameras, as well as the top score for video. The DxOMark scale provides a ranking system to evaluate the image and video quality of smartphone cameras. The Galaxy Note10+ 5G was unveiled during last week’s Unpacked event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, alongside the Galaxy Note10+ which delivers the same image and video quality experience.

 

The Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ put state-of-the-art tools to capture stunning video and photos at users’ fingertips and have been built with content creators and everyday users in mind. [Design Story] How Samsung Reimagined the Galaxy Note10’s Design

Striking a perfect balance of power and pocketability, the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ pack an array of bar-raising performance technologies and productivity tools into a slim, nearly bezel-less design that’s as stunning as the devices are powerful.

Yun-je Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Design Team, summed up the philosophy behind the flagships’ design. “These days, our smartphones are always in our hands, and they’re becoming items that express our individuality and preferences,” said Kang. “From the beginning, we worked hard to achieve a design that reflected a deep understanding of how consumers use their smartphones today.”

Let’s examine how Samsung optimized the Galaxy Note10’s form factor to offer Millennial and Gen Z users a more immersive and productive smartphone experience.


Sleek and Slim, with an All-New S Pen

The Galaxy Note10 features a streamlined form that’s comfortable to grasp and looks as if it were chiseled from a single piece of glass. Simple but solid, the smartphones’ monolith-like frame supports a nearly bezel-less display, which offers multitasking Note users more room to do what they do best.

The smartphones’ brilliant Cinematic Infinity Display gracefully flows over the edges, blurring the line between body and display. Samsung’s PM1733 SSD and High Density DIMMs Support AMD EPYC™ 7002 Series Processor

Samsung Electronics has taken its leadership position in the memory market a step further today by announcing support of the Samsung PM1733 PCIe Gen4 Solid State Drive (SSD) and high density RDIMM1 and LRDIMM2 dynamic random access memory (DRAM) for the AMD EPYC™ 7002 Generation Processors. AMD launched the 2nd Gen AMD EPYC™ processor in San Francisco yesterday.

“AMD has listened to the needs of its customers in developing the 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors and has worked closely with us to integrate the best of our cutting-edge memory and storage products,” said Jinman Han, senior VP of Memory Product Planning, Samsung Electronics. “With these new datacenter processors, AMD is providing customers with a processor that enables a new standard for the modern datacenter.”

“We’re excited and thankful to have partners like Samsung supporting the launch of our 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors,” said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager, Datacenter Solutions Group, AMD. “With twice the cores, breakthrough performance and embedded security features, all optimized by leadership architecture, customers can now transform their datacenter operations at the pace of their business growth.”

The AMD EPYC™ 7002 Generation Processors are expected to deliver up to 2X the performance per socket3 and up to 4X peak FLOPS per socket4 over the previous generation.  The new processors deliver a consistent, comprehensive set of I/O, memory and security features across 8-64 ‘Zen 2’ cores.

Samsung’s PCIe Gen 4-enabled PM1733 SSD will have double the throughput capabilities of current Gen 3 SSDs, giving it the highest performance of any SSD on the market today. It reads sequentially at 8.0GB/s and randomly at 1500K IOPS, while offering capacities up to 30.72TB for U.2 (Gen 4 x4) configurations and 15.36TB for the HHHL (Gen 4 x8) form factor. The drive is produced with Gen5 512Gb TLC V-NAND.

The PM1733 drive will be available industry-wide this quarter in both U.2 and HHHL variants, and will be backward compatible with PCIe Gen 3 architectures, providing exceptional flexibility for existing and future server applications.  The drive also features Dual Port capabilities to support storage as well as server applications.

In addition to Samsung’s PM1733 SSD, Samsung has provided its full lineup of RDIMM and LRDIMM DRAM products for AMD EPYC 7002 Series Processors. Using component architectures of 8Gb and 16Gb DDR4, Samsung is able to offer DIMM capacities ranging from 8GB to 256GB. With Samsung high density DIMMs, users can tap into as much as 4TB of memory per CPU.

[Photo] Highlights from the Galaxy Note10’s Immersive Unpacked Event

Samsung Electronics’ latest Unpacked event was a sight to behold – in more ways than one.

 

Held earlier today, August 7, in New York City, the interactive showcase saw the company officially unveil the Galaxy Note10: a new line of premium smartphones designed for a new era of mobile productivity. To demonstrate just how seamless the devices make managing a wide spectrum of interests, Samsung transformed Brooklyn’s Barclays Center into a prism of light with exhibits that immersed attendees in both color and innovation.

Anticipation grows as Unpacked attendees line up outside of Brooklyn’s Barclays Center before the start of the show.

 

The arena’s mirror-lined entrance immerses attendees in light that gradually shifts from sheer white to iridescent. The rainbow of prismatic colors visible within mirrors the multi-dimensional nature of Samsung’s latest flagships.

 

DJ Koh, Samsung Electronics’ President and CEO, IT and Mobile Communications, introduces the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+: “For everyone who demands the best, I am proud to introduce the newest version of the ultimate power phone.”

 

Drew Blackard, Head of Mobile Product Management, Samsung Electronics America, outlines some of the Galaxy Note10’s most exciting upgrades, including a choice of 6.3- and 6.8-inch models, a sleek and slim design, and a gorgeous Dynamic AMOLED display. “The Dynamic AMOLED display is brilliant and utterly immersive,” says Blackard. “In fact, the front of the phone has virtually no bezels.”

 

After introducing enhancements that make the S Pen more powerful and convenient, including customizable Air actions, Blackard hands things over to travel vlogger and filmmaker Eva zu Beck, who offers a live demo of the S Pen’s new gesture controls from the event’s hands-on experience zone. “When I’m traveling alone and I need to take a photo or video, sometimes I just ask a stranger to do it for me,” says zu Beck. “That’s why I’m so excited about the new S Pen with remote control: because it’ll make it easier for me to operate the camera when I’m just with my tripod.”

 

Before delving into the ins and outs of the Galaxy Watch Active2, Pooja Vig, Senior Director of Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, sums up what separates Samsung’s newest smartwatch from other wearables we’ve seen before. “The Galaxy Watch Active2 is so much more than a watch,” Vig explains. “It’s a perfect companion that helps you manage your busiest days, and it’s a personal trainer that coaches you on your hardest workouts.”

 

Hassan Anjum, Director of Product Strategy and Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, takes to the stage to introduce what he describes as “a device that’s gonna usher in a new era of mobile productivity,” the Galaxy Book S. After the reveal, Anjum explains how, featuring a powerful mobile chipset with LTE connectivity, the Galaxy Book S “looks like a laptop, but it’s got the essence of a smartphone. The best of both worlds.”

 

Koh welcomes Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to the stage to discuss how Samsung and Microsoft are partnering to improve productivity and eliminate the gap between PCs and mobile devices.

 

Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), introduces the new, donation-based Samsung Global Goals app, created to help support the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (which include ending poverty, fighting inequality and stopping climate change).

 

After the showcase, members of the media get hands-on with Samsung’s newest smartphones in one of the venue’s interactive experience zones.

 

 

An exhibit awash in vibrant color invites guests to take a closer look at the Galaxy Note10’s prismatic hues and elegant design.

 

Mirror-lined walls create the impression that guests are standing in the middle of a sea of floating yellow lights. In other words, the perfect setting for testing out the Galaxy Note10’s pro-grade camera.

 

Using a guest as her model, renowned illustrator Sha’an d’Anthes draws a personalized AR filter in a fun demonstration of the Galaxy Note10’s AR Doodle feature.

Samsung Electronics Takes 3D Memory to New Heights with Sixth-Generation V-NAND SSDs for Client Computing

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing 250-gigabyte (GB) SATA solid state drive (SSD) that integrates the company’s sixth-generation (1xx-layer) 256-gigabit (Gb) three-bit V-NAND for global PC OEMs. By launching a new generation of V-NAND in just 13 months, Samsung has reduced the mass production cycle by four months while securing the industry’s highest performance, power efficiency and manufacturing productivity.

“By bringing cutting-edge 3D memory technology to volume production, we are able to introduce timely memory lineups that significantly raise the bar for speed and power efficiency,” said Kye Hyun Kyung, executive vice president of Solution Product & Development at Samsung Electronics. “With faster development cycles for next-generation V-NAND products, we plan to rapidly expand the markets for our high-speed, high-capacity 512Gb V-NAND-based solutions.”


The Only Single-stack 3D Memory Die With a 100+ Layer Design

Samsung’s sixth-generation V-NAND features the industry’s fastest data transfer rate, capitalizing on the company’s distinct manufacturing edge that is taking 3D memory to new heights.

Utilizing Samsung’s unique ‘channel hole etching’ technology, the new V-NAND adds around 40-percent more cells to the previous 9x-layer single-stack structure. This is achieved by building an electrically conductive mold stack comprised of 136 layers, then vertically piercing cylindrical holes from top to bottom, creating uniform 3D charge trap flash (CTF) cells.

As the mold stack in each cell area increases in height, NAND flash chips tend to become more vulnerable to errors and read latencies. To overcome such limitations, Samsung has incorporated a speed-optimized circuit design that allows it to achieve the fastest data transfer speed, at below 450 microseconds (μs) for write operations and below 45μs for reads. Compared to the previous generation, this represents a more than 10-percent improvement in performance, while power consumption is reduced by more than 15 percent.

Thanks to this speed-optimized design, Samsung will be able to offer next-generation V-NAND solutions with over 300 layers simply by mounting three of the current stacks, without compromising chip performance or reliability.

In addition, the number of channel holes required to create a 256Gb chip density has decreased to 670 million holes from over 930 million with the previous generation, enabling reduced chip sizes and less process steps. This brings a more than 20-percent improvement in manufacturing productivity.

Leveraging the high-speed and low-power features, Samsung plans to not only broaden the reach of its 3D V-NAND into areas like next-generation mobile devices and enterprise servers, but also into the automotive market where high reliability is extremely critical.

Following today’s introduction of the 250GB SSD, Samsung plans to offer 512Gb three-bit V-NAND SSD and eUFS in the second half of this year. The company also expects to expand production of higher-speed and greater-capacity sixth-generation V-NAND solutions at its Pyeongtaek (Korea) campus starting next year to better meet demand from global customers.

Galaxy’s Celebrity Alarm Lets You Personalize Notification Alerts with Celebrity Voices

How would you like to be woken up in the morning by your favorite Hallyu star? With the Galaxy series’ Celebrity Alarm feature launched this March, which allows users to customize the sound of their alarm from a range of Korean celebrities’ voices, now you can be.

With Celebrity Alarm, users of devices1 can set their phone notification and alarm noises to the voice of their favorite Korean celebrities. Celebrity Alarm currently features the voices of 21 fan favorites, including ITZY, Daniel Kang, Dae-hwi Lee, Ji-hoon Park, Seventeen, NU’EST, Monsta X, GFriend and Apink – and this number is constantly growing.

The Celebrity Alarm feature functions not only as a customized alarm clock, but also provides notification alerts for various day-to-day scenarios – users can get the day of the week and current time alerts in a celebrity’s voice. If Bixby is enabled, users can also receive daily weather information from their favorite stars.

Not only does Celebrity Alarm provide you with a unique way to receive daily alerts, but the stars’ messages also vary depending on the weather, day of the week and the time. For example, if the weather is cold, Eun-woo Cha may greet you with “It’s very chilly outside, are you wearing warm clothes?”, and on Monday mornings, Dae-hwi Lee will greet you with “It’s a fresh Monday morning. Life is not a problem to be solved but a gift to be enjoyed. Begin the best day of your week!”.

Galaxy Celebrity Alarm

Celebrity Alarm is available for purchase in the Galaxy Store2. Once a user’s desired celebrity voice has been downloaded, it will automatically be saved in a device’s alarm sound list – this is then customizable from within the settings of the Clock app. Once a user has set an alarm, they can choose their desired celebrity voice by clicking on ‘Alarm Sound’ → ‘Celebrity Alarm’ → ‘Selected Voice’, or ‘Alarm Sound’ → ‘Bixby Alarm’ → ‘Selected Voice’ if Bixby is turned on.

The Celebrity Alarm app is available in 11 Asian countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, and will be expanded to more countries, languages, devices and celebrity features in the near future. The Sample Celebrity Alarm can be played in languages other than Korean3 when played by a user on a device local to their country of residence.

[Hands On] The Perfect Companion for Active Life, 24 Hours with the Galaxy Watch Active



Summertime has come. A lot of people are interested in exercise, fitness, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this time of the season. Samsung Newsroom has decided to spend 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active to see if it is the perfect companion that will help me get the summer body.



Once I wore the watch, I immediately noticed the look and feel of the slim fit. Given its various activity-tracking features that include sleep tracking and stress detection, consumers could easily assume that the watch would appear to be bulkier in person. But the small and light 28mm display weighs only 25g that consumers with thin wrists and women can wear it with ease. Also, the watch straps are sturdy and smooth that does not collect dust. The Galaxy Watch Active is designed to keep the remaining strap tucked against your wrist, making it extremely convenient to use.


7:30 AM – Starting the Day with Sleep Tracking Data



The first thing I did when I woke up was to check the sleep tracking data. Using the Samsung Health app, the Galaxy Watch Active provides a rundown of the stages of sleep1 through the night and sends personalized analysis related to my sleeping habits. Thanks to the sleep data, I realized that my sleeping habits were irregular. To build a healthier habit, I decided that I should try to go to bed at a certain time regularly to enhance my quality of sleep. And with the recent Software Update, it was easier for me to switch to ‘Goodnight Mode’ before I went to sleep. When it is time for me to go to bed based on my sleeping pattern, the device lets me know if I want to set the mode on. Once it is activated, it turns the sound and screen off so that I will not get distracted while I am asleep.


8:30 AM – Checking my Schedule Without Turning on the Phone

“Hi Bixby, show me today’s schedule.” When I was on my way to work, I asked Bixby to check my schedule for the day and the weather without taking the phone out of my bag. All of this is possible since my phone is synced with the Galaxy Watch Active. This was the most useful function especially when I was holding my bag or other larger personal belongings. Just by using the voice command, I was able to check my schedule, the weather, start recording my workout when I am exercising, and even control my home devices through SmartThings (an IoT app).


2:30 PM – How I can Charge My Watch Without a Battery Charger



During the afternoon, the Galaxy Active Watch sent a notification that the battery was running low. Though I can charge the watch with a battery charger, I don’t have to carry it with me all the time since I can simply use Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy S10 to recharge. With Samsung’s device ecosystem that is seamlessly connected, it is very helpful.


4:00 PM – The Watch Vibrates When a Message Arrives



While I was concentrating on my work at the office, I felt a weak vibration on my wrist. I checked the watch and saw a text message from my friend asking me if I wanted to get some pizza this weekend. The great thing about the Galaxy Watch Active is that I don’t have to use my phone and unlock it to reply to a text since I can simply respond back using the watch. I can use my finger to draw an emoticon or use the keyboard and voice input to respond to long messages. Using these features, I texted back, “Love to ♥.”


6:10 PM – Heading Home from Work, Taking the Stairs and Achieving my Workout Goals



A healthy habit starts with a single step. “Daily Activity” feature reminds me to move hourly, burn more calories and workout every day. When I am concentrating on my work at the office, I would not leave the desk for hours. However, when I receive notifications from the Galaxy Watch Active, I never forget to do some stretches every hour since the device detects my movement patterns. And though I usually tend to use the escalators when I am using the subway, I chose to take the stairs instead to reach my daily goals. The best feeling is when I get a notification telling me that I reached my daily goal.


8:00 PM – Exercising at Home Without the Help of a Personal Trainer



After a hard day at work, I still managed some time to exercise at home so that I can get that summer body. With the Galaxy Watch Active, the device can automatically detect and track seven types of exercise such as walking, running, riding a bike and swimming when I am working out for a certain amount of time. Not only that, I can check how much time I spent and how many calories I have burned by selecting an exercise routine from thirty-nine types of exercise from lunges to squats, yoga, etc. When I wanted to give up because it was getting too hard to exercise, I kept on going when I saw how close I was to meeting my goals from the watch. I was motivated to reach the targets and finished my daily workout. I have never felt so much accomplishment.

My 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active helped me to maintain healthier habits and increase activities. I could have easily given up if I were to go through the process all by myself. They say that pros do not make excuses on tools/devices, but it is also true that we rely on good tools to enhance our efficiency, including for workouts. The Galaxy Watch Active is the perfect partner for people who seek to live healthier lifestyles. Samsung and Orange Romania Demonstrate 5G VR Live Streaming at Untold Music Festival in Romania

Samsung Electronics and Orange Romania have successfully deployed a 5G New Radio (NR) network to demonstrate a series of 5G use cases at Untold Festival 2019, the largest annual dance music festival in Romania, held from August 1 to August 4.

The two companies started their 5G collaboration in 2018 with a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial in Cluj county, Romania, where Orange mobile customers became the first European users to experience at home 5G services. Now, the companies are ramping up their efforts to bring the benefits of 5G to users in Romania.

At Untold, which drew over 335,000 attendants last year, Orange Romania and Samsung have set up 5G use cases to offer immersive experiences powered by the 5G network’s ultra-low latency and ultra-high speed, unfolding the potential of the next generation technology for all to see. The demonstrations include real-time streaming of the performances, captured by 360-degree cameras built onto the arena’s main stage. The stream is shown at an Orange VR zone set up outside the arena, providing a uniquely immersive viewing experience to fans who visit. The companies are also holding an event demonstrating 5G download speeds reaching above 1Gbps, with a latency reduction of 50% on that experienced when using current LTE technology.

“With these successful demonstrations, we are showcasing the experiences that 5G can bring to Orange customers in Romania,” said Emmanuel Chautard, Chief Technology Officer at Orange Romania. “Together with Samsung, we’re showing live network capabilities, with proof that goes beyond just impressive speeds more centered on the customer experience.”

“5G offers more than just a faster connection; it enables transformative use cases that will benefit people and businesses across the industry,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “These joint demonstrations allow for a glimpse into the new kinds of services and capabilities that will be made possible as we unlock the potential of 5G for users across Europe.”

The trial at Cluj Arena, where the festival is taking place, makes use of Samsung’s latest solutions, including 5G Massive MIMO Units (MMUs), which support the 3.4-3.8GHz frequency band. Samsung 5G MMUs have already been rolled out across Korea by all three Korean 5G operators for use with their 5G commercial service, which launched in April of 2019. This commercially proven MMU is one of the smallest and lightest in the industry, making installation in existing cellular sites very straightforward.

Recognizing the need for emerging applications to build on a strong foundation that supports interoperability among all categories of devices, four sponsor members – The ASSA ABLOY Group which includes HID Global, and NXP Semiconductors, Samsung Electronics, and Bosch, leading companies in access, secure connectivity and mobile/CE device solutions –  today announced the launch of the FiRa Consortium. The new coalition is designed to grow the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) ecosystem so new use cases for fine ranging capabilities can thrive, ultimately setting a new standard in seamless user experiences. Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc., LitePoint and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) are the first companies to join the newly-formed organization.

The FiRa name, which stands for “Fine Ranging,” highlights UWB technology’s unique ability to deliver unprecedented accuracy when measuring the distance or determining the relative position of a target.  Especially in challenging environments, UWB technology outperforms other technologies in terms of accuracy, power consumption, robustness in RF connection, and security, by a wide margin.

“As an industry consortium, we believe UWB technology can transform the way people experience connectivity, and we’re committed to the widespread adoption of interoperable UWB technologies,” says Charlie Zhang, Chair of the FiRa Consortium and VP Engineering, Samsung Electronics.

The starting point for UWB technology is the IEEE standard 802.15.4/4z, which defines the essential characteristics for low-data-rate wireless connectivity and enhanced ranging. It is the aim of the FiRa Consortium to build on what the IEEE has already established, by developing an interoperability standard based on the IEEE’s profiled features, defining mechanisms that are out of scope of the IEEE standard, and pursuing activities that support rapid development of specific use cases.

The unique capabilities of UWB promise to make it an essential technology in many areas including:

  • Seamless Access Control – UWB can identify an individual’s approach toward or away from a secured entrance, verify security credentials, and let the authorized individual pass through the entrance without physically presenting the credential.

  • Location-Based Services – UWB offers highly precise positioning, even in congested multipath signal environments, making it easier to navigate large venues such as airports and shopping malls or find a car in a multi-story parking garage. It also enables targeted digital marketing campaigns and foot traffic data. Retailers can present customized offers, government agencies can tailor their notifications, and entertainment venues can personalize recommendations during events.

  • Device-to-Device (Peer-to-Peer) Services – By providing precise relative distance and direction between two devices, UWB lets devices find the relative location of each other even without infrastructures such as anchors or access points. This allows people to easily find one another in crowded spaces or find items even when placed in hidden areas.

Due to its low power spectral density, UWB offers little to no interference with other wireless standards, so it is well suited for use with other wireless technologies, including Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. There are also adjacent markets that leverage UWB in other ways, especially automotive. “The FiRa Consortium’s commitment to a complete ecosystem means we will work with other consortia and industry players to develop approaches and define parameters,” says Charles Dachs, Vice-Chair of the FiRa Consortium and GM & VP Secure Embedded Transactions, NXP Semiconductors.
