[Video] Interpretive Dance Captures the Spirit of the Galaxy Fold

 

The launch Galaxy Fold will herald the arrival of a whole new category of smartphones, introducing one of the most meaningful innovations in smartphone technology in the past decade. Samsung has released a new video on 15th, ahead of the commercial launch of the device.

 

This video dramatizes the device’s unique trait, the foldable screen, through a powerfully-crafted dance performance, created by world-renowned choreographer Amy Gardner.

 

The film follows a dancer as she breaks free from rigidity and physical constraints. She moves through a period of self-exploration and into a state of self-realization that manifests in a powerful dance sequence. The film then resolves with the reveal of the Galaxy Fold, clasped in the dancer’s hand. The music is a modern reinterpretation of ‘Tom’s Diner’ from the critically acclaimed artist Santigold.

 

Pio Schunker at global marketing team said “As much as the Fold is a brand-new category-changing device, we challenged ourselves to create a marketing campaign that was on-par with this product. Therefore, we did not rely on ‘traditional’ launch ideas where it was focused mostly on communicating product features – but rather on how we could communicate effectively with our target audience emotionally. As you can see from our initial teaser using the bold Korean type on a global scale, we continued to do our best to deliver the product story in unique and new ways with the Galaxy Fold.”

The Annual Samsung Tomorrow Solutions Competition Opens Globally

Samsung Electronics today announced that Samsung Tomorrow Solutions 2019, an idea competition aimed at creating a better world, will be open globally starting from April 11th. The contest is an annual event which was held for the first time in 2013 with an aim to contribute to society by developing creative ideas to solve social problems. This year is the second time the event is being held globally.

 

Applicants can submit their ideas in four categories, including education, health/medicine, environment/safety, and local community development. Samsung Tomorrow Solutions helps the applicants develop and implement their ideas utilizing Samsung Electronics’ technology and capabilities, making it distinctive from other contests that simply offer monetary prizes.

 

Now in its seventh year, the competition boasts a number of successful submissions that have made an impact on society such as a thermal imaging system and a portable diagnostic device for eye diseases. These solutions are now being used in fire rescue missions and in health care services in developing countries, respectively, contributing to local communities and creating a better world.

 

Teams who advance to the final round of the competition after passing the preliminary and semi-final rounds will be eligible for financial support for further development of their solutions as well as mentoring by Samsung Electronics employees and experts in the relevant field. A total of 200 million Korean Won (approximately 180 thousand U.S. Dollars) in prizes will be awarded to the winners who will put their solutions to the test by developing and trialing them.

 

After the competition is completed, the winners will attempt to make a tangible difference in society by applying their own solutions to real life situations. For solutions that are expected to have a particularly far-reaching impact on society, Samsung Electronics will provide an unlimited amount of support for product/service development, partnerships, and initial business costs to commercialize the innovation.

 

An ophthalmologist uses Project BOM’s portable device for eye disease diagnosis at a community health center in Quang Tri, Vietnam.

 

For example, the portable diagnostic device for eye diseases presented by team Project BOM, the grand prize winner of the 2018 Impact awards, received additional technical and financial support from Samsung Electronics to further develop the technology. Project BOM developed a retinal camera and a medical information platform using smartphones to reduce the occurrence of preventable blindness that results from limited access to medical treatment.

 

More specifically, Samsung Electronics and the Project BOM team collaborated to make improvements and provided the device to 20 community health centers in Quang Tri, Vietnam. Distribution to additional 20 health centers in other locations is planned for this year. This solution started from an idea by medical professionals and was realized with the support of Samsung Electronics to bring innovation to the medical industry in developing countries where there is a lack of advanced equipment for eye diseases.

Samsung Awarded by Thai Government for its Dual Vocational Education Program

Thai Samsung Electronics has been recognized for its contributions to vocational skills education by Thailand’s Ministry of Education for a second consecutive year. The Samsung Dual Vocational Education Program (Samsung DVE) has played a vital role in helping students develop skills that are essential for careers in vocational fields and has assisted over 100 skilled technicians since 2016.

 

Samsung DVE returned in 2019 for the program’s fourth year, partnering with the Office of Vocational Education Commission in Thailand. The program prepares students for vocational careers as skilled technicians, a profession in high demand in both the Thai and ASEAN labor markets. Samsung DVE has provided vocational training, internships and job opportunities, with a significant proportion of participating students going on to serve customers at Samsung Service Centers nationwide.

 

 

 

Commenting on the award, Jung Sung Park, Director of Customer Service Planning, Thai Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd said: “Samsung is pleased and proud to have a role in the skills and career development of Thai technicians. On April 10, during a jam-packed event that spanned three continents and was livestreamed for the world to see, Samsung Electronics revealed the all-new Galaxy A70 and Galaxy A80 – smartphones designed for the Era of Live.

The modern kitchen is a dynamic hub, and today’s consumers are seeking a space that can meet their every need around-the-clock. From April 8 to 14, at Fuorisalone 2019 in Milan, Italy, Samsung Electronics is bringing together contemporary trends, smart products, new technologies and superlative design to reveal kitchens that welcome a diverse range of experiences.

The 24hr. Kitchen emphasizes the vital role that the kitchen plays as the heart of the home, adapting to every aspect of our ever-changing, 24-hour lives. Samsung kitchen appliances are designed to meet the needs of millennial lifestyles around the clock and, to illustrate this, the Samsung booth has been divided into three rooms – Morning, Day and Evening – each showcasing one of three built-in appliance lineups. One long counter weaves its way through the booth, connecting each room to the next stage in the day.

 

 

 

Reinterpreting the Classics

The exhibition embraces Gohar’s fanciful approach to food, with each room presenting guests with various interpretations of a single ingredient transformed by Samsung kitchen technologies, providing the ideal backdrops to feature Samsung’s built-in packages. Throughout the booth, Samsung’s latest built-in products are featured, from the Dual Cook Flex™ oven and Induction cooktop, to the Twin Cooling Plus™ refrigerator and WaterWall™ dishwasher.

 

 

The Morning room celebrates the heartiness of grains. Upon stepping into the room, guests are greeted with decorative bunches of wheat and an eye-catching arrangement of different kinds of grain. They can enjoy pieces of bread with butter taken from elaborate butter sculptures, a variety of focaccia and volcanic cakes mounded high onto the counter. With clean lines and neutral shades, the Morning room’s Silver Stainless Steel package creates a modern, bright kitchen well suited to the joyous delight of freshly baked bread.

 

 

In the Day room, tomatoes take center stage, with tomatoes on the vine hanging from the ceilings and a display of assorted heirloom tomatoes on the table. Guests are encouraged to savor delicacies such as tomato caviar atop a beetroot cracker, sundried tomatoes and tomato paper with tomato gelée. The tomatoes’ sophisticated pops of color give the Smart Kitchen package the warm glow of daytime.

 

 

The Evening room is devoted to all things sweet. Samsung’s Multi-Mode Exynos Chipsets Help Bring the 5G Era to Mobile Consumers

 

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its 5G communication solutions are in mass production for the latest premium mobile devices. The 5G multi-mode chipsets include the previously-introduced Exynos Modem 5100 as well as a new single-chip radio frequency transceiver, the Exynos RF 5500, and supply modulator solution, the Exynos SM 5800, all supporting 5G New Radio (5G-NR) sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) spectrum and legacy radio access technologies that provide mobile device manufacturers with optimum network communication solutions for the 5G era.

Exynos Modem 5100 is Samsung’s first 5G modem solution that had completed preparations for commercialization in August, 2018, with a successful over-the-air (OTA) 5G-NR data call test. The modem supports virtually all networks from 5G’s sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums to 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and 4G LTE networks in a single chip.

 

For reliable and power-efficient performance, the modem is paired with RF and supply modulator solutions, Exynos RF 5500 and Exynos SM 5800 respectively.

 

Samsung’s Exynos RF 5500 supports legacy networks and 5G-NR sub-6GHz networks in a single chip, offering added flexibility in smartphone designs, especially for today’s premium mobile devices. RF transceivers are key components that allow smartphones to transmit and receive data over the cellular network. When transmitting voice or data from a smartphone to a carrier, the RF up-converts the modem’s baseband signal to high GHz-range cellular frequencies so that data can be sent swiftly over the connected network. Vice versa, when receiving, the signal is down-converted by the RF to baseband frequencies for it to be processed by the modem. The Exynos RF 5500 has 14 receiver paths for download, and supports 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and higher-order 256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) scheme to maximize the data transfer rate over the 5G network.

 

The Exynos SM 5800 is a low-power supply modulator solution for 2G to 5G-NR sub-6GHz that supports up to 100MHz envelope-tracking (ET) bandwidths. As the possibilities for richer content with higher data rates open up with the arrival of 5G, maintaining a highly efficient RF has become more critical in ensuring a longer battery life in a mobile device. The Exynos SM 5800 demonstrates up to a 30-percent power reduction by dynamically adjusting the supply voltage according to the modem’s RF input signal. With an advanced power optimizing ET solution for RF, data can be transmitted more efficiently and reliably over the incredibly fast 5G network.

 

Both the Exynos RF 5500 and SM 5800’s technological breakthroughs have been recognized by the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) committee and were presented at ISSCC 2019 held at San Francisco last February.

 

As the industry moves forward to unfold and discover the full benefits of 5G, Samsung plans to continue pushing for innovation in mobile communication technologies, including RF transceiver and phased array solutions for mmWave along with 5G-embedded mobile processors, that will further drive the proliferation of new applications in mobile devices and emerging industries.

[Interview] Ushering in a New Era of Connectivity with the Galaxy S10 5G

On April 5, the powerful and feature-packed member of Samsung’s newest flagship line, the Galaxy S10 5G, will officially launch in its first market.

 

Consumers in South Korea will be the first to get their hands on the world’s first 5G smartphone. A monumental release not just for Samsung but for the mobile industry as a whole, the Galaxy S10 5G allows users to unlock an entirely new mobile experience – one that combines bar-raising display, camera and performance innovations with support for the next-generation telecommunications standard, 5G.

 

How will putting the power of 5G into consumers’ hands change the way we enjoy things like AR, VR, 8K video and cloud-based content? To answer those questions and more, Samsung Newsroom spoke with Albert Hoseong Kang, of Samsung Electronics’ Innovative Product Planning Group.

 

 

 

Creating a Faster Future

The Galaxy S10 5G opens the door for users to access unprecedented speeds – up to 20 times faster than 4G.

 

As Kang explained, 5G speeds will fast-track the development of cloud-based services, make the idea of buffering videos a thing of the past, and change the way we create content and enjoy our favorite multimedia. “Downloads and uploads speeds will be dramatically reduced, which means more people will be watching and shooting high-definition content,” said Kang.

 

5G will also revolutionize gaming, sports, and other entertainment. “When 5G networks are implemented, response speeds will be drastically shortened, which means you’ll experience real-time responsiveness with most types of content,” said Kang. “Delay times will be virtually eliminated during sports broadcasts, and games like first-person shooters and racing games, which could be difficult to enjoy due to mobile devices’ technical limitations, will be taken to a whole new level.”

 

This also includes cloud-based games, or games that may be played in real time via a cloud server. Cloud-based games don’t have to be downloaded to your phone, don’t take up storage space, and don’t require individual updates. They do, however, require fast and stable network speeds, which makes them difficult to fully enjoy when connected to 4G networks. But with its 5G network support, the Galaxy S10 5G will allow users to experience graphics-intensive cloud-based games in all their glory.

 

 

The launches of 5G networks will also lead to more utilization of AR services. The Galaxy S10 5G’s innovative 3D Depth Camera works by measuring the length of time it takes for an infrared light signal to bounce off subjects, and uses that data to enhance AR services, generate Live Focus bokeh effects when shooting videos, and measure objects’ size – as well as the distance between them – with Quick Measure.

 

“The Galaxy S10 5G’s 3D Depth Camera will help bring about a variety of useful services,” said Kang. “All of these innovations are the results of careful consideration of how to deliver more value – and new multimedia experiences – to 5G smartphone users.”

 

 

Optimized Inside and Out

The Galaxy S10 5G was designed for consumers who want it all, and optimized to take full advantage of the incredible speed, power and connectivity that comes with 5G networks.

 

 

To maximize users’ immersion when viewing high-quality HD video and other digital 5G content, Samsung equipped the device with a 6.7-inch, edge-to-edge display – the largest in the Galaxy S10 line. To enable users to spend more time streaming, playing and doing, and less time charging, Samsung incorporated a high-capacity 4,500mAh battery, as well as support for Super Fast Charging of 25W.

 

When the time came to decide upon an optimal storage setup, Samsung focused on usability, carefully considering how smartphone users will utilize their devices in the 5G era. This ultimately led to the decision to equip the Galaxy S10 5G with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of baseline storage – the largest baseline storage in the Galaxy S10 line.

 

The Galaxy S10 5G has a futuristic feel to it, which, as Kang pointed out, extends to the design and color of the device. When refining the design, he explained, “We tried to create the impression that using a 5G smartphone is like using the smartphone of the future.”

 

Some of these enhancements included making the side metal frame thinner than on the other Galaxy S10 models, which makes the Galaxy S10 5G more comfortable to hold, and offering the phone in its own unique range of colors1: Crown Silver, Majestic Black and Royal Gold. The Crown Silver model features a prismatic color treatment, which means that its color changes depending on the angle of the light.

 

 

Driving 5G Innovation

 

As Kang explained, developing the first smartphone optimized for 5G wasn’t easy. Because 5G phones had never been developed before, the process required venturing into unknown territory.

 

“Since it was the first time, we needed to overcome a number of technological barriers,” said Kang. “We also faced difficulties developing new hardware and software.”

 

To overcome those barriers, the company drew from its long history of developing industry-leading mobile innovations.

 

 

“Although it was our first time developing a 5G device, we have a wealth of experience when it comes to developing technologies for new telecommunications standards,” said Kang. “The know-how we accumulated during the shifts from 2G to 3G and from 3G to 4G enabled us to gather valuable insights into the market for 5G devices and their users.”

 

When it came to testing and refining the device, the development team leaned on their company’s leadership in 5G network solutions. As Kang explained, “Samsung has already developed a wide array of end-to-end solutions for 5G services – ranging from network equipment to processors, memory semiconductors and handsets – which made testing easier.”

 

According to Kang, Samsung’s ultimate goal for these solutions, and for the Galaxy S10 5G, is to “create a world where anyone can enjoy 5G,” and create an environment in which cloud, AR, VR and ultra-high definition video services can truly flourish. “We will continue to provide new experiences that deliver the promise of the 5G era by working with our partners and strengthening our leadership in this area,” said Kang.

 

The Galaxy S10 5G’s Korean release is just the beginning. Soon, Samsung’s groundbreaking 5G phone will be released in markets around the world to help usher in the 5G era.

Samsung Joins the Alliance for Open Media Board of Directors

Samsung recently announced that it has joined the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a nonprofit organization formed by leading internet and media technology companies which intends to define and develop open standards for media compression and delivery over the web.

 

Streaming media consumption continues to grow, enticing new users to the internet and providing everyone with more ways to engage with online media services and content. New technologies from virtual reality and 360-degree video to online gaming and entertainment all have the potential to offer users richer 4K and beyond images with a wider range of colors at faster speeds. AOMedia’s AV1 tackles the challenging technical hurdles to enable this growth – while using compression to reduce data demands. By joining AOMedia at the highest level, Samsung will directly participate in expanding adoption of AV1 to help bring better media experiences to customers and their devices around the world.

[Interview] How the Galaxy S10’s Design Team Created a Galaxy for Everyone

The Galaxy S10 line celebrates a decade of Galaxy innovation with incredible new features and award-winning technologies. But the first thing consumers will notice when they see a new Galaxy S10 isn’t the Dynamic AMOLED display or the pro-grade camera system—it’s the eye-catching design.

 

The Samsung Newsroom sat down with the Galaxy S10 design team to learn more about how they created the most striking Galaxy lineup yet.

 

 

A Whole New Spectrum of Colors and Materials

The overarching design concept of the Galaxy S10 line is: “Radical, Magical”. From its bright colors and luxurious materials, to its sleek shape and bold display, the Galaxy S10 delivers radical change with a magical feel. Focusing on “prism colors”, the design team aimed to create iridescent hues that change depending on how they catch the light, so each device refracts light to produce a vast spectrum of colors.

 

 

“To create Prism White, we overlaid around 1,000 sheets of nanofilms together, each with different reflectivity,” explained Duyeong Choi, a member of the Design Team’s CMF Group responsible for color. “It was especially difficult to fine-tune which colors would stand out the most.”

 

 

In addition to adopting the prismatic design, the team also introduced bold new colors that are particularly attractive to Millennials and Gen Z. Youngmi Shin, in charge of the design strategy division from the Design Team elaborated: “We chose playful colors in line with current trends, with ‘Canary Yellow*’ for the Galaxy S10e based on the viral-hit color Gen Z Yellow and ‘Flamingo Pink*’ for the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+.”

 

In a Galaxy-first, the team also introduced premium, ceramic backs for the Galaxy S10+ with the colors Ceramic Black and Ceramic White. Recalling traditional ceramicware, which is heated to 1,400- degrees centigrade to achieve a tough exterior, the Galaxy S10+’s ceramic backs offer greater strength and durability, as well as better scratch resistance, thanks to an added inner layer of scatter-protection film. The beautiful ceramic finish is the result of an intense, 200 hour-long process, handled by Samsung from start to finish. “Some users want a more sophisticated look and substantive feel for their device,” Shin said.

 

 

“The Galaxy S10 line is defined by choice. From the option of a flat display and compact form factor of the Galaxy S10e, to the larger, end-to-end displays of the S10 and S10+, there’s something for everybody,” Seungho Jang, a member of the Flagship Product Design Group in the Design Team, emphasized.

 

 

The Difference is in the Detail

Ensuring that the Galaxy S10 line was free of any friction or frustration was a top priority for the designers. For instance, the team had to position the front camera so that it did not interfere with content on the display, and they had to optimize the refractive ratio of the display to minimize bezels.

 

 

There were also larger challenges. A secure, comfortable grip is a vitally important consideration for a smartphone, so the form factor was a major point of focus for the design team.

 

The Galaxy S10’s feeling of openness comes from its shape at the edges,” Jang continued. “We shaped the sides of the device to be smooth and solid like a pebble. Not only does it feel great in your hand, it reduces the shadow on the display from reflected light.” 

 

These design choices can influence the integrity of the display—especially one as technologically advanced as the Infinity-O Display. Dongkyun Kim of the design team recalled the development process: “The key is finding the perfect balance between the feelings of solidness and slimness.”

 

 

Putting it All Together

With the Galaxy S10 line, every decision—big or small—mattered. The result is something extraordinary: a device that honors the Galaxy legacy and sets a new standard for the smartphone.

 

Seungho Jang reflected: “In smartphone design, continual innovation is no easy task, but we are always listening to users, and are committed to pushing the boundaries of design to create Galaxy devices that everyone can enjoy.”
