How to Use Apple Watch's Training Load Feature

Apple Watch is a fantastic training tool with many different ways to track your workouts and fitness progress. The watchOS 11 Training Load feature will suggest a physical effort rating for your workout. This metric is valuable for tracking your exercise routine's intensity and monitoring how your body recovers.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Apple Training Load is measured using your weight, height, heart rate, pace, and elevation.

* Your training effort will be estimated automatically but can be manually adjusted.

How to Use Apple Training Load Feature

System Requirements

This tip works on Apple Watches running watchOS 11 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of watchOS.

We'll teach you how to input your Effort levels for each workout and compare how your your previous week's Training Load compares to the past 28 days. I will start by walking you through the Training Load setup to ensure that you have the Training Load Reminders feature toggled on, but it may already be toggled on by default.

* Open the Fitness app on your iPhone.

* Scroll to the very bottom of the Summary tab and tap See All Categories.

* Tap Add.

* Scroll until you see the Training Load card, then select it.

* Tap Add Card.

* It will show up at the bottom of your Summary tab, but you can drag it to reorder it. Tap Done once you have it where you want it.

* If you haven’t done so already, you’ll be asked to Set Up Training Load. This will show up even if you’ve already used the Training Load feature after workouts.

* Here, you’ll see information about this feature that you may find useful. Tap Next.

* Next, decide if you want to receive Effort Reminders. Keep it toggled on for the rest of the steps in this tutorial to work. Then, tap Next.

* Finally, you’ll learn a bit about the personalized insights that you will get via the Vitals app. Tap Done.

* Once you've done this and toggled  End a workout, you’ll see the training load window come up. It will either be blank or will show your device’s estimate of your effort.

* You can adjust it if you don’t think it is an accurate reflection. Just swipe left and right until you land on the level you think is more appropriate. Tap the check mark to save.

* You can view the Training Load of each workout in the Activities app on your Apple Watch or the Fitness app on your iPhone. Just select the activity and scroll down until you see Effort: you can tap on it to make adjustments.

* After you use the Training Load feature for a while, you can get more information about your progress by opening your Fitness app and tapping on the Training Load card. Here, you can see the Training Load of your recent workouts with a Vitals app graph.

Now you know how to use the Training Load feature on your Apple Watch and how to see how Effort is tracked in the Vitals app. That way, you know if you are pushing yourself physically or taking a well-deserved break. Next, check out our favorite Apple Watch workout tips.

Set an Apple Watch Activity Rings Goal for Each Day of the Week

You can find motivation to be more active with Apple Watch by setting up Activity Goals to push yourself. But it isn't always realistic to set the same goal for Monday and Saturday, which is why you can now set unique goals for each day of the week! Learn how to set individual daily goals for your Apple Fitness Rings.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Set a different Apple Watch Move goal, Stand goal, and Exercise Minutes goal for each day of the week.

* Create a workout schedule that pushes you more on certain days of the week.

* Make your activity goals compatible with your schedule.

How Do I Change My Workout Goal for Specific Days of the Week?

System Requirements

This tip works on Apple Watches running watchOS 11 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of watchOS.

Setting up generalized Activity Goals can be hard because you don't have the same schedule every day. If your gym days are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, how are you going to hit the same goals on Tuesday and Thursday? And what about rest days? Apple has finally made it possible to set different goals for specific days of the week, letting you schedule go-all-out days followed by slower recovery days.

* Tap on the Activity Rings on your Apple Watch.

* Tap anywhere on your Activity Rings that isn’t an icon.

* Select Change Goals.

* Tap on the calendar icon in the top right corner.

* Tap Schedule.

* You'll see the days of the week and your calories burned goal underneath. Use the Digital Crown or swipw up and down to scroll and tap on a day to make changes.

* Use the Digital Crown or tap the plus or minus to change the calorie goal. Then tap Set.

* Once you are done customizing your Move goal, tap Set Schedule.

* Next, you'll be taken to Exercise goal minutes. Tap the calendar icon at the top right of your screen and follow the same steps you took to customize the Move goal calories.

* Once you tap Set Schedule for your Move goal, you can follow the same steps for your Stand goal hours.

* It is possible to set daily goals for some of your Activity Rings and leave others to be the same every day of the week. Just skip the step where you tap the calendar icon and select Set once you select the calories/minutes/hours you wish to work towards.

Now you know how to change activity goals on Apple Watch and customize them for every day of the week! I like to keep my Stand goal the same but raise my Move and Exercise goals on gym days. Next, learn how to pause your Activity Rings for a day, week, or month without losing your steak.

How to Customize Apple Watch Notifications

Tired of endless interruptions on your wrist? Me too! Learn how to customize which notifications you get on your Apple Watch to minimize unnecessary alerts. Some apps have app-specific notifications to give you even more control over your device.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* You can customize which notification you get on your Apple Watch.

* Minimize notifications by turning off alerts from less important apps.

How to Customize Apple Watch Alerts

System Requirements

This tip works on Apple Watches running watchOS 11 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of watchOS.

Yes, you have full control over which apps can send notifications to your Apple Watch! This means that you can keep certain notifications off your wrist. To customize your Apple Watch notifications:

* Open the Watch app on your iPhone and navigate to the My Watch tab if you're not already there.

* Tap Notifications.

* Here you will see a list of all your apps separated into two sections: the first consists of mostly pre-installed apps with customizable settings and the second has third-party apps with an iPhone-mirror toggle. Tap on each pre-installed Apple app and select the options that work best for you.

* Some apps, like Activity, will have app-specific notification options.

* Some apps will also offer the option to either allow notifications, turn them off completely, or only see them in the notification center which means you will see the notification when you check for it, but you won’t be alerted when it comes in.

* Other apps will instead give you the option to mirror the notification settings for the corresponding iPhone. When opting to mirror my iPhone, some apps will actually list your iPhone’s notification settings underneath.

* Next, scroll down to the second list of apps. These apps only have the option to mirror the iPhone notification settings or not. They do not show what those settings are though, so if you’re not sure you will have to check them in your iPhone Settings app.

Pro Tip

If you decide to mirror your iPhone, you will only receive notifications for apps that mirror the iPhone and only if notifications are enabled for that app on the iPhone.

Now you know how you customize the notifications you get on your Apple Watch app-by-app! If you have a lot of apps on your devices, this could take a while, but it is worth the time spent. Next, learn how to fix your Apple Watch not getting notifications.

Place iPhone Apps Anywhere on the Home Screen (iOS 18)

The latest software update for your iPhone brings many new customization options. You can now drag apps anywhere on your Home Screen while still keeping them in a neat grid. Here’s how to move an iPhone app anywhere on your Home Screen.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Freely arrange apps however you want on your Home Screen.

* Avoid covering the subject of your wallpaper by moving your apps out of the way.

How To Move an iPhone App Anywhere on the Home Screen

System Requirements

This tip works on iPhones running iOS 18 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

I have never been able to have a photo wallpaper because I don’t want apps covering the faces of my pets and loved ones. With iOS 18, I really love having more control over where I put my apps, and I’m glad iPhones are finally able to do this! Here’s how to move an iPhone app anywhere on your Home Screen:

* Tap and hold an empty area to edit your Home Screen.

* Tap and drag any app anywhere on your Home Screen, and release it.

* The app will stay in its location, rather than automatically moving itself to the end of the bottom row.

* Continue moving apps around until you have them arranged how you want. Then, tap any empty space or swipe up on the Home Bar to exit editing mode.

The only restriction is that the apps still snap to a grid, but you can easily place them anywhere. This means you can arrange apps around a specific photo to prevent the subject from being covered. Next, find out the meaning behind the iPhone symbols on top of the screen.

Sort Your Passwords in the Passwords App (iOS 18)

In previous versions of iOS, your passwords were stored in iCloud Keychain, which you could access by going into the Settings app. Now, Apple has given us a dedicated Passwords app. Let’s go over how to sort passwords in the Passwords app.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Sort your passwords and find them easier.

* Find out when you last updated a specific password.

How To Sort Passwords in the Apple Password Manager

System Requirements

This tip works on iPhones running iOS 18 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

In the Passwords app, you can sort your passwords by date, when they were last edited, by website, and more. This helps you wade through hundreds of passwords to find the specific account you are looking for. Here’s how to sort passwords in the password manager on iPhone:

* Open the Passwords app.

* After verifying with Face ID, choose All, Passkeys, or one of your Password Groups. For this example, I’ll choose All.

* Tap the up and down arrows.

* By default, your passwords are sorted by Ascending. When sorting by Title, Ascending means that your passwords will be sorted alphabetically starting with A.

* Descending will sort your passwords in reverse alphabetical order starting with numbers and symbols, followed by websites that start with Z.

* Title allows you to sort alphabetically based on the title you’ve used for the account.

* Website sorts your passwords alphabetically based on the website. This might look similar to Title, depending on how you name your passwords.

* Date Created will sort your passwords based on the date you added them to the Passwords app. The Ascending and Descending titles will also change to Newest First and Oldest First.

* Date Edited will sort your passwords based on when you last edited the details of a particular account. Like the previous step, this changes Ascending and Descending to Newest First and Oldest First.

That’s where to find passwords on the iPhone and how to sort them. If you have more questions about passwords on the iPhone, be sure to check out our walkthrough of Apple’s Passwords app.

Customize App Icon Colors & Size in iOS 18

Your Home Screen is more customizable than ever before. The latest software updates from Apple now allow you to change the color and size of your app icons to better match your personal aesthetic. Here’s how to customize app icons on your iPhone.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Personalize the apps on your Home Screen to match the wallpaper.

* Switch between dark and light icons depending on the time of day.

How To Customize App Icons in iOS 18

System Requirements

This tip works on iPhones running iOS 18 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

Customizing app icons used to be complicated, requiring you to use the Shortcuts app and do them one app at a time. With iOS 18, it just takes a few taps! So how do you change app icons? Here’s how to change the color scheme of the app icons and widgets on your Home Screens:

* Tap and hold an empty space on your Home Screen until your icons wiggle, indicating that you are in editing mode.

* Tap Edit.

* Select Customize.

* Here you can pick between Automatic, Dark, Light, and Tinted. Automatic is the default setting and will change your icons from light or dark based on whether your iPhone uses Dark or Light mode.

* Dark simply changes all of your compatible app icons to a dark tone, regardless of your system theme.

* Light changes all of your compatible app icons to a light tone, regardless of your system theme.

* The option that lets you pick custom colors is Tinted.

* The first time you do this, it will automatically pick a color scheme that matches your wallpaper. You can also customize it by using the sliders to change the color and shade.

* You can also use the eyedropper to pick a color from your background to find an exact match.

* If you tap on the sun icon you can pick between a lighter look or a darker look.

* If you select Large, you will see larger app icons and no text underneath them. If you select Small, you will see the default-sized icons with the app names underneath them.

* To finalize your selections, just tap outside of the editing menu.

* Your selections will also apply to widgets, including your Photos widget (so your photos will appear tinted).

Note

The color scheme you pick will not only apply to the apps and widgets on your Home Screen Pages but also to your App Library and the Today View. Keep in mind that some third-party apps have their own customization settings and won’t change based on the settings you change above.

That’s how to change app icon colors on iOS 18. After playing around with various shades and colors, I ended up switching back to my regular Light Home Screen. Even though the duotone colors are calming, I enjoy having a bright colorful Home Screen too much to use this new feature. I do enjoy the larger app icons with no visible app names. I’m hoping that Apple makes it possible to swipe between Home Screen styles the same way you can swipe between Lock Screens, and have them connected to Focus modes. That way, I could set up a duotone Tinted Home Screen for certain situations.

Top Security Updates from Apple You Should Know About

Here, find a monthly briefing of all of Apple's security patches and updates this month, and what it means for you.

Next Generation of Apple Operating Systems Are in Beta

Apple has released public betas for the next versions of all its operating systems including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. These bring a suite of new features and security content, but we usually recommend waiting until the software is officially released before updating. The official releases are expected at the end of August or early September.

These operating systems will introduce the new generative artificial intelligence system called Apple Intelligence. From a privacy & security standpoint, Apple Intelligence appears to be very well-engineered to protect users. Though Apple Intelligence is not yet available in the public betas, Apple has taken the unprecedented (for them) step of making every scrap of the software that their Apple Intelligence servers will run all available for security researchers to vet, test, and verify. This is a remarkable step for Apple, and it really does increase our faith in the integrity of the system they’ve designed.

In addition to Apple Intelligence, iOS 18 and its cousins will also introduce the Passwords app, Apple’s own password manager all nicely bundled into its own app. It even works on Windows! We’re excited.

The Bottom Line: For hot takes on the features of iOS 18, see the iPhone Life podcast Episode 213: Top iOS 18 Features Coming to Your iPhone This Fall. For how to get the betas (and why you may not want to), see How to Sign Up for the Apple iOS 18 Public Beta Program.

Mac Notification Center Leaves Text Messages Vulnerable

Until MacOS 15, infostealer malware or hackers with remote access to a Mac could find the archive of notifications from the notification center and search through it for useful information such as text message contents including verification codes. MacOS 15 is expected to address this vulnerability, reports 9to5Mac. When notifications are served to the user they may contain sensitive information, in particular the contents of text messages. MacOS 15 beta builds fix this problem by moving the archive of notifications into a group container.

The Bottom Line: This is just one good reason to look forward to MacOS 15.

VisionOS 1.2 Improves Creepy Digital Avatars

If you are one of the rare owners of an Apple augmented reality headset, the Vision Pro, then you will benefit from numerous bug fixes and security updates if you install the latest version of visionOS. The security content is mostly the same as what was fixed on iPhones and iPads with iOS 17.5, but includes a few other bugs. New features with 1.2 include improvements to the appearance of Persona digital avatars—which we consider to be a security concern because video calls are one of the few ways to verify an identity and digital avatars subvert this—a few improvements to the virtual keyboard, more reliable connection to Macs via Virtual Display, support for iMessage Contact Key Verification, and more.

The Bottom Line: VisionOS is still in its infancy, and every infant has to learn like crazy. Every VisionOS update is likely to continue to make crucial improvements.
