How to Use Tesla Voice Commands for Safer Driving
Unlike other voice assistants, like Siri or Alexa, you cannot activate Tesla Voice commands with your voice. In order to use the commands listed below, you have to physically activate the feature:
* On a Tesla Model S or X, you can do this by tapping the voice button located on the top right side of the steering wheel.
* On a Tesla Model 3 or Y, you can press the right-side scroll button on your steering wheel or tap the microphone button on the touchscreen.
* Once you’ve done this, you can speak a Tesla voice command!
* You will see the written version of your commands at the bottom left of your touchscreen.

Pro Tip
If you try a command and don’t get the results you expect, you can glance at it to see if the Tesla heard you correctly.
Best Tesla Voice Commands List
Just like with other smart assistants, there are always several ways to get your Tesla to do the same thing, and not just because of Tesla Easter eggs! For example, to open an app, you can say "open", "show," "launch," or even "start." For this reason, our Tesla voice commands list is organized by feature and includes verbal variations.
“My Butt is Hot” & Other Climate Control Voice Commands
Elon Musk is known for including silly voice commands and Tesla Easter eggs in the software. That is why telling your Tesla that your or your passenger's butt is hot or cold will control the heated seats! Of course, there are more eloquent ways to say it, too! Here are all the climate-related voice controls:
* "My butt is cold" will turn on the driver's heated seat. Repeating it will turn it up one level.
* "My butt is hot" will either turn the driver’s heated seat down a level or turn it off. If the seat is turned up to maximum heat, you will have to say this three times to turn the heating off completely.
* "My passenger’s butt is cold" will turn the passenger’s heated seats on or up.
* "My passenger’s butt is hot" will turn the passenger’s heated seats down or off.
* "Set the driver's seat warmer to (number 1-3)" will set the seat warmer to the level requested.
* "Set the temperature to (number)" will adjust the climate in the car; you can also say, "Set the AC to (number)."
* "Set the fan to (number)" will turn on/adjust the fan.
* "Turn on the air conditioning" will turn on the AC. You can say "Turn on the AC" as well.
* "Turn on Dog Mode" will turn on Dog Mode.
* "Turn on Camp Mode" will turn on Camp Mode.
* "Make it warmer" will turn the temperature up.
* "Make it colder" will turn the temperature down.
* "Increase fan speed" will make the fan blow harder.
* "Decrease fan speed" will make the fan blow less.
* "I’m cold" will turn the temperature up.
* "I’m hot" will turn the temperature down.
* "Turn on recirculate" will make the fan blow out air that’s already in the car, which can save on battery life and be safer if there’s smog or air pollution outside.
* "Turn on biodefense" will turn on a special mode that protects you from any pollution or smoke outside the car from coming inside. This is only available in some models (2016+ Model X and S and 2020+ Model Y)
* "My hands are cold" will turn on the heating inside your steering wheel if your Tesla has this feature.
* "Turn on steering wheel heater" will turn on the heating inside your steering wheel if your Tesla has this feature.
* "My feet are cold" will turn on the climate control to warm your feet.
* "My feet are hot" will turn on the climate control to cool your feet.
* "Blow me" is another silly command that is supposed to be able to turn the fans on full blast in your Tesla. However, it didn't work on my 2019 Tesla Model 3. Perhaps it was removed because it was considered too inappropriate.
* "Turn on the rear defroster" will heat up the rear windows to defrost them.
Pro Tip
In most cases, if you can turn something on with a voice command, you can also turn it off by using the same command but using “off” instead of “on.”
“Display Superchargers” & Other Navigation Voice Commands
Teslas are unique because they have their own infotainment system and use Tesla maps for navigation, which is why you don’t need features such as CarPlay as a Tesla owner. While being able to navigate on a large touchscreen is useful, it can be distracting and even dangerous to use while driving. Luckily, you can navigate easily using Tesla voice commands:
* "Navigate to (address or name of location)" will plug the location into Tesla maps and start navigating there. If you save a location with a custom name like home, work, school, or even "favorite restaurant" and "secret beach spot," then you can use that for even easier navigation.
* "Go to (name of place)" will also navigate to the specified location.
* "Take me to (name of place)" works too.
* "Mute voice guidance" will keep navigation on, but it will be silent.
* "Stop Navigation" will end the navigation.
* "Zoom in" will zoom into Tesla maps.
* "Zoom out" will zoom out of Tesla maps.
* "Display Superchargers (or Destination chargers)" will show you nearby chargers.
* "Turn on satellite mode" will turn on satellite mode as long as you have Tesla Premium Connectivity.
* "Turn on traffic mode" will turn on traffic mode as long as you have Tesla Premium Connectivity.
Save Dashcam Footage & Other Safety Voice Commands
People often ask, "What is the fastest way to lock a Tesla?" Aside from tapping the lock/unlock icon on the screen, you can also use a voice command!
* "Lock doors" will lock your Tesla doors.
* "Unlock doors" will unlock the doors.
* "Save" will save the most recent 10 minutes of dashcam footage. Honking your horn or tapping the dashcam icon can also do this if you have these options toggled, but using the voice command is a lot more discreet and safe.
* "Keep (almost any word) safe" will turn on Sentry Mode. I tried "keep Tesla safe," "keep husband safe," and "keep summer safe," and they all worked to enable Sentry Mode!
* "Enable Sentry Mode" also works, or "activate" or other synonyms.
* "Call 911" will call the emergency services using your phone, as long as your phone is connected to the Tesla via Bluetooth.
Call or Text Using Tesla Voice Commands
Calling and texting in a Tesla is no different than it is in other cars that allow you to connect your phone via Bluetooth. Simply say:
* "Call (name of contact)" to call them.
* "Text (name)" to text them. You can also say "send a message" or other alternatives. You will then be able to dictate a text the way you would on your phone. Don’t forget to use punctuation and emojis by saying "question mark" and "smiley face."
* "Respond to text" can be used after a text comes in and you had the Tesla read it.
Open YouTube & Other Media Voice Commands
Another unique thing about Teslas is that the infotainment system offers not just music but apps like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube! Plus, you can use the browser to search for anything on the web. In order to access some of these features, you need to have Tesla Premium Connectivity or be connected to Wi-Fi. Theater and Arcade are disabled while driving, so try these commands while safely parked:
* "Open (app name)" will open the app of your choice, like Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, etc.
* "Play (name of song, artist, or album)" will play the song.
* "Search for (anything you wish to search on the web)" will search for that text in the browser using Google.
* "Volume up" will turn the volume up, with alternative phrases like "louder volume" or "turn up the volume" working as well.
* "Volume down" will turn down the volume, as will various alternative phrases.
* "Set volume to (number)" will adjust the volume.
* "Mute media" will turn the volume all the way down. "Mute music," or the name of an app, can be used too.
* “Unmute media” will then revert to the previous volume.
Open Butthole, Lock Doors & Other Physical Tesla Controls
Here are the most useful voice commands that control the physical (hardware) aspects of your Tesla.
* "Open the butthole" sounds dirty, but it actually just opens the Tesla charging port.
* "Open charging port" will also open it, if you prefer a more serious voice command.
* "Open trunk" will open the trunk.
* "Close trunk" will close the trunk if you have a compatible Tesla or third-party gear that enables automatic closing.
* "Open frunk" will open the front truck, coined the "frunk" by Tesla users.
* "Close frunk" will close the front trunk if you have a compatible Tesla or third-party gear that enables automatic closing.
* "Turn on windshield wipers" will turn on the windshield wipers, but if you have them set to Automatic, they might not start wiping unless the Tesla detects rain. If you switch them to the manual, you can turn them on and off and control the speed by saying "increase/decrease windshield wipers speed," "turn up/down," "raise/lower speed," "min/max" or other synonyms.
* "Set wipers to (speed number)" will also turn them to the requested speed.
* "Adjust steering wheel" will open the settings on your Tesla display that will let you adjust your steering wheel, but only while you are parked.
* "Fold mirrors" will fold the mirrors in, but only while you are parked.
* "Unfold mirrors" will unfold them, again only while parked, for safety reasons.
* "Turn on lights" will turn on all the inside lights in your Tesla. I wasn’t able to turn on just the front or just the back lights; it was either all or nothing.
* "Turn off lights" will turn all the inside lights off.
* "Open sunroof" will open the sunroof if your Tesla has one. Unfortunately, only the 2012 Tesla Model S has one.
* "Open glove box" will open the glove box. If you have a pin code set up, it will pull up the number pad on your touchscreen display, and once you tap in the code, the glove box will open.
Note
For some reason, you cannot open Tesla windows using voice commands. Or at least I wasn't able to open them on my 2019 Tesla Model 3.
Siri-Specific Tesla Voice Commands
If your iPhone is connected to your Tesla via Bluetooth, you'll be able to use certain Siri commands. What I love about this is that you don't need to activate voice controls using the steering wheel, and instead, you can just say "Hey Siri" or "Siri" if you are running iOS 17 or later. For this to work, you need to have Siri voice commands enabled on your iPhone. You can learn more Siri tricks in our free Tip of the Day newsletter.
* "Hey Siri, do I need to charge the car?" will tell you how much battery your Tesla has.
* "Hey Siri, what’s the charge level on the car?" will also tell you how charged your Tesla battery is.
* "Hey Siri, open the trunk" will open the trunk.
* "Hey Siri, open the frunk" will open the frunk or front trunk.
* "Hey Siri, lock the doors" will lock all the doors in the Tesla.
Note
If you have multiple Tesla apps on your iPhone, you may be asked which app you wish to use. You will be able to pick one by saying the app name out loud. Discover the best third-party Tesla apps here.
Other Tesla Voice Commands
It is almost impossible to list every single Tesla command because there are so many ways to phrase each command and because they are a little different depending on your Tesla model and what features you have.
* "Open energy app" will open the energy app that shows you your past and predicted energy consumption, a useful tool for Tesla trip planning.
* "Show energy graph" will also open the app and specifically show you the energy graph.
* "Open (app name)" will open basically any app that’s available on your Tesla. You can also use the word “show” instead of “open” in most cases.
* "Open (setting name)" is a great shortcut to take you to any Tesla setting that might otherwise require lots of tapping. Plus, whenever the Tesla updates, the settings tend to move around a bit and can be harder to find.
* "Open browser" will open the Tesla browser.
* "Search Google for weather" will search the internet for the weather forecast and will show the results in the browser like it would on your phone or computer.
* "Go to Tesla.com" will open the official Tesla website that you can then navigate on your touchscreen display.
* "Check tire pressure" will show your Tesla’s tire pressure on the touchscreen display.
* "Turn on/off the dome light" will turn the lights inside the car on or off.
* "Fog lights on: will turn on the fog lights.
* "Increase screen brightness" will increase the brightness of your touchscreen display. You can also say "decrease" to turn it down or use synonyms such as "turn down/up" or "lower/raise."

There may be more that I missed, or a few that only work on certain Tesla models or when parked or while driving. Next, learn how to unlock your Tesla with an Apple Watch car key!

What Are Compromised Passwords on iPhone? (iOS 17)
What to Know
* If you see security recommendations, that means your passwords may be compromised.
* Compromised passwords are passwords that have appeared in data leaks.
* You can turn off these notifications in Settings, tap Passwords, Security Recommendations, and then toggle off Detect Compromised Passwords.
Have you ever checked your saved passwords and seen a message about compromised passwords on your iPhone? This is Apple’s way of helping you stay secure. When you see this message, it’s your iPhone letting you know that some of your passwords are not as secure as you might think. However, if you do not need this warning, there’s an easy way to turn it off.

* Frequently Asked Questions
What Does Compromised Passwords Mean?
If you’ve checked your security recommendations on your iPhone and see a message that says, “This password appeared in a data leak,” that means that the password was leaked. Sometimes, companies will be hit by cyber attacks in which hackers gain access to a database of usernames and passwords. If you have an account with a company where this has happened, your password may be in that database. So, if you use the same password across multiple accounts, the hackers will be able to log in everywhere that you use that password.
This is why it is crucial to make sure you use unique, strong passwords for every account. Your iPhone can suggest strong passwords for you so that you don’t have to worry about coming up with them on your own. Not only that, but iCloud Keychain keeps track of your passwords so you don’t have to. For more iPhone security advice, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.
How to Turn Off Notifications for Compromised Passwords on iPhone
While there isn’t a way to turn off the security recommendation warning completely, you can prevent your iPhone from notifying you if a saved password appears in a data leak. This can be beneficial if you are sharing accounts and don't have control over the passwords. However, we recommend that you take these notifications seriously and, when possible, change your passwords based on Apple's recommendations.
* Open the Settings app, and tap Passwords.
* Tap Security Recommendations.
* Tap the toggle next to Detect Compromised Passwords to disable or enable this feature.
When this feature is disabled, you will not be notified if any of your passwords appear in data leaks.
FAQ
* Can you check if passwords have been compromised? You can follow the steps above to get to the Security Recommendations menu. There, you can see all the accounts that your iPhone has detected as being compromised. You can also visit the website Have I Been Pwned? This site allows you to enter your email address and will tell you which of your accounts have appeared in a data leak.
* How did all my passwords get compromised? If you use an easy-to-guess password or the same password for every account, it’s more likely that your passwords will get leaked in a security breach at some point. When that happens, all of your passwords become compromised since the same one can be used for multiple accounts. That’s why it’s important to use a different strong password for every account.

* Tap Security Recommendations.

Flic 2 Smart Buttons Upgrade Any Smart Home (2023)
Smart buttons can make controlling your smart home easier without forcing you to memorize dozens of voice commands. I love being able to use my Flic 2 buttons to quickly control scenes in my home without belting out the voice commands and disturbing the animals or humans in the room. Here’s everything you need to know before purchasing the Flic 2 Starter Kit!
Do Physical Buttons Dumb Down a Smart Home?
Not at all! In fact, having a lot of smart gear in a home can be overwhelming, making navigating it harder than it should be! With the Flic 2 Starter Kit ($169.99), gone are the days of memorizing lots of different Siri commands, disrupting the entire household by yelling them out repeatedly, or picking up your phone any time you want to turn on a smart light, outlet, etc.!
Flic buttons are smart buttons that function as switches to activate or deactivate smart devices or apps in your home. It works by adding the smart buttons to your iPhone’s Home app (or Android equivalent) as an accessory, then setting actions for single pressing, double pressing, and long pressing the buttons. This means that one button can control three different accessories or entire scenes (if you set them up via the Home app).
The smart Flic buttons come with adhesive backing, so you can stick them wherever you find convenient. I have one on my treadmill headboard that turns the AC on high, controls the nearby lighting, and locks/unlocks the door so I can let friends and family in without disrupting my workout. I also have one on my bedside table to run my evening and morning routines with the touch of a button. They are really convenient and make waking up early easier.
While it may seem counterintuitive to add physical ways to control your smart home, these are different from your regular buttons or light switches. The biggest perk is that you can set them to control any smart device or sequence of smart actions—like setting a climate, turning on or turning off certain lights, locking doors, starting a robot vacuum cleaning, and more, all with one press of a button.
What Devices Can Smart Buttons Control?
Flic smart buttons can control a wide variety of smart devices. Basically, anything that’s compatible with your phone will work with the buttons. If you are an iPhone user, you’ll set everything up through the Home app. As long as your smart device is Home app- or Matter-compatible, you’ll be able to control it with your Flic buttons!
If you live in a mixed-device household where one or more members have an iPhone while others have Android devices, you’ll be able to use the same hub on multiple devices. Just install the Flic app on your phone via the App Store (free) and Google Play (free), and everyone will be able to use and share the Flic smart buttons.
There are over 1,000 devices and apps that work with Flic. There are ways you can use them that you might have never thought of on your own! For example, you can use the smart button instead of swiping to turn pages on your digital book or sheet music (Newzik app). Or you can use them to initiate a fake call to interrupt a bad date using the Fake Call app for Android. You can even set them up to work as buzzers if your family is into quiz parties! The options really are endless.
Can You Use Flic Smart Buttons without a Hub?
Yes, you can! But you probably don’t want to. You can purchase a 3-pack of buttons without the hub for just $79.99, but then the buttons won’t be Apple HomeKit compatible and will have less range. Plus, the hub lets you control up to 63 buttons, gives you full home control, and works with the infrared accessory that makes it possible to use Flic buttons instead of remotes (as long as the device uses infrared remotes.)
If you live in a household with multiple people, you'll definitely want to purchase the hub, otherwise, the buttons will only work when the phone is nearby. The hub makes it possible for anyone to enter your home and use the buttons, even if they don't have the app installed on their phone. The hub is also programmable and can be plugged directly into the router using an Ethernet cable for seamless connectivity.
Pros:
* The buttons are super versatile with many different applications.
* The buttons come with cute stickers to help everyone easily identify the buttons.
* Adhesive backing makes it quick and easy to install the buttons in the most convenient locations, even places where you could never have a wired light switch or button.
* Compatible with both iPhone and Android, even simultaneously for mixed-device households.
* You can save money by buying the buttons without the hub, but you sacrifice range, HomeKit-compatibility, and many other features.
* Quick and easy setup.
* Three triggers per button give you lots of possibilities.
* Great for guests or house sitters who don’t have experience with home assistants or struggle memorizing all the voice commands.
* You don't need to charge or plug in the buttons; they use the same inexpensive batteries that AirTags use (CR2023) that can last years but generally need yearly replacement.
* Flic sells great accessories that let you clip on your smart button, attach them to textiles, or use them to control anything using an infrared remote.
Cons:
* The initial price can be tough to justify for the average household.
* It can be hard to decide what to use the buttons for because there are so many options.
* Any tech can glitch or experience bugs/security breaches, so you may need to troubleshoot on occasion.
* If you experience internet problems, the buttons won’t work.
* The sticker options are pretty limited compared to how much the buttons can do, and ordering or making custom stickers can be an additional cost and/or chore.
Final Verdict
I really love my Flic buttons, and I love how much easier they make it to control my smart home. I didn't even realize how many issues I was putting up before Flic. I was used to having to repeat myself to Siri or running around looking for my phone to control my smart devices. These smart buttons truly make my home smart and unified instead of full of devices that don't always work the way they should. While the initial cost may require saving up for the purchase, they are worth the price. Plus, after you purchase the Starter Kit for $169.99, extra buttons cost $79.99 for three, which controls nine separate devices/apps or nine complex scenes with multiple steps.

Why Won't My Contact Posters Update? Fix It Fast! (iOS 17)
What to Know
* Apple introduced a new feature called the Contact Poster with iOS 17.
* You can customize and personalize multiple Contact Posters, but only others with iOS 17 or later can see your creation.
* Can't see a friend or family member's new Contact Poster? This is a common glitch; here's how to fix it!
If you're wondering why your Contact Posters won't update, here's how to fix the Contact Poster glitch! Solve update problems and get the most recent iOS 17 Contact Card for each of your Contacts.
Why Won't My Contact Posters Update? Fix It Fast!
In iOS 17, the Contact Card has become the Contact Poster. Contact Posters are easy to create and customize, but there's a bit of a glitch; sometimes, Contact Posters won't update. Here's how to get your friends and family member's Contact Posters to update on your iPhone and iPad. For more great Contact Card and Contact Poster tutorials, check out our free Tip of the Day.
How to Update Contact Posters with the Contacts App
You won't necessarily be able to tell that your contact's Contact Poster hasn't been updated, although sometimes you'll see the icon at the top of Messages flip back and forth between two photos.
Recently, my coworker Sarah told me she had updated her Contact Poster but I noticed it didn't update in my Messages app. Fortunately, there's a quick trick to solve this Contact Poster problem;
* First, close the Messages app.
* Next, open the Contacts app on your iPhone or iPad.
* Tap the name of the contact whose Contact Poster won't update. You should see the updated icon at the top of the page, and the old icon next to Revert. Don't tap Revert; tap Done at the top-right corner of the page to update the Contact Poster.
* Leave the Contacts app open, then open the Messages app again, and tap the conversation with the person whose Contact Poster wouldn't update (or stay updated). This seems to refresh the Contact Poster and fix the problem
As you can see, Sarah's Contact Poster is now updated to its latest version, and it's stayed that way; success!
How to Update Contact Posters with the Phone App
If the process above hasn't fixed the Contact Poster won't update glitch, there's one more thing to try.
* Have the person whose Contact Poster won't update call you, and allow that call to go to voicemail.
* Tap the Recents tab at the bottom of the Phone app, then tap the info icon (lowercase i in a circle) in the call you just missed at the top of the screen.
* Tap Update to update the Contact Poster.
* Tap Done to finish updating the Contact Poster.
* Now, that Contact Poster that wouldn't update should finally be updated!
FAQ
* Why Won't My Contact Posters Update? The problem of Contact Posters (formerly known as Contact Cards) not updating is a known iOS 17 glitch.
* How can I get my Contact Posters to update? You can close Messages, open Contacts, open the contact whose Contact Poster you're trying to update, then open Messages again, and you should see the option to update, or the update will happen automatically.
* Will Apple fix the Contact Posters update glitch? Apple fixes bugs and glitches with every iOS update; the Contact Poster won't update glitch will be more likely to get fixed quickly if you give Apple feedback about the problem.
By now, you should be able to see all your contact's new Contact Posters! Be sure to check back with iPhone Life for any other Apple device problems or iPhone issues; we're here to help!

Tesla App Not Connecting to Car? The Quick Fix (2023)
What to Know
* There are several quick and easy steps to take to fix your Tesla app not working.
* Check your phone's Bluetooth and cellular connections, sign out of the app, then back in, and install any phone updates.
* Bonus: I'll recommend good third-party alternatives that work just as well as the official Tesla app, if not better.
Experiencing the Tesla app not connecting is a big pain point for Tesla owners. This results in the Tesla phone key not working and all sorts of other frustrations. In this article, I will explain the various reasons why your Tesla app is not working, the steps you can take to fix it, and a workaround if the problem persists.
Jump To:
* Why Won't My Phone Connect to My Car?
* How to Fix Tesla App Not Connecting to Car
Why Won't My Phone Connect to My Car?
If your Tesla app is not connecting to your car, the most likely culprit is a bad Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular connection or software glitches on either your phone or Tesla. The steps below will show you how to troubleshoot this issue and get your Tesla app re-connected! If your phone or car is in a dead zone with spotty internet, you won't be able to use the app. I live on Maui and experience this often with my Tesla Model 3. For more tech tips, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter.
Note
The screenshots below are iPhone-specific, but you can still follow these steps if you have an Android phone.
How to Fix Tesla App Not Connecting to Car
I'll go through the Tesla app not working troubleshooting steps, starting with the solutions most likely to fix the problem and quickest to test, then moving on to more time-consuming and less likely solutions.
* Make sure your iPhone is connected to a reliable Wi-Fi or Cellular network and has Bluetooth on.
* Close and reopen the Tesla app by swiping up on your screen to get to the App Switcher, then swipe up on the app.
* Turn your Wi-Fi, Cellular, and Bluetooth off on your iPhone, wait 30 seconds, then turn them back on again.
* Restart your iPhone.
* Make sure you remember the password, then sign out of the Tesla app and sign back in.
* Delete the app off your phone, then install it again.
* If you can get inside your Tesla, park safely, and avoid driving for a few minutes, reboot your Tesla by pressing and holding both scroll wheels on the steering wheel.
* Make sure the Tesla app, your iPhone, and your Tesla are all up to date. The issue could be a known problem that has been fixed by your phone manufacturer, or Tesla.
Now you know what to do if your Tesla app won’t connect to your car!
Pro Tip
If you experience lots of problems with the original Tesla app, it may be time to check the many third-party Tesla apps. Some of them even have features that you won’t find on the original app! My personal favorite is Tessie ($4.99/month+), but you may want to try several to see what works best.
We hope you got your Tesla app up and running and feel confident that you can fix any future app problems. If you live somewhere with spotty internet and Cellular networks, you’ll likely experience your Tesla app not working often. This is one of the reasons to have your Tesla key card or a different physical key, like the CNICK ring or bracelet ($99+), in cases like this if you want to avoid paying a pricey towing fee.
FAQ
* Why is my Tesla charging stats not showing? If your Tesla charging stats aren't showing on your Tesla app, but your app is working as it should, it is possible that your Tesla got disconnected. If the app is acting weird, follow the steps above to fix it.
* What is the Tesla insurance phone number? The best way to apply for insurance or file a claim is to go through the app. Open the Tesla app, scroll down, tap Roadside, and select the relevant information there to get support.

Smart Home Frequent Issues & How to Fix Them (2023)
What to Know
* If your smart home experiences frequent issues, there are a few steps you can take to improve efficiency and reduce frustrations.
* The most common smart home issues are device compatibility, Wi-Fi issues, old software, and damaged hardware.
* While a smart home may always experience some technical problems, it is possible to avoid common problems.
Despite the many benefits of having a smart home, there can also be many problems. It's quite ironic when devices that are supposed to make your life easier instead make it unnecessarily harder. If you have a smart home, frequent issues can arise, but we will help you fix each one for good!
How to Fix All Smart Home Frequent Issues
When you have a smart home, frequent issues can make a supposedly smart upgrade feel dumb. The following steps will help you fix any smart home problems you may be experiencing and get your system running smoothly. For more tech tips, sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter!
1. Make sure that your devices are compatible with each other.
Not every smart device is Home Kit or Matter-compatible. Some require an Alexa or Google smart assistant instead of an Apple HomePod or HomePod mini. Make sure to read the descriptions of any online products you buy. Most websites will have a longer version of the description or a system requirements/specifications section that you can check for compatibility.
Most Siri-compatible devices will be labeled with the Home app or AirPlay icons. These can also be found as stickers on compatible smart gear packaging. Apple has a useful list of smart home accessories that will work with your Apple devices.
2. Wi-Fi connection problems caused by incorrect settings, problematic router placement, or incorrect network password.
If your device can’t connect to the network, there are several potential solutions. First, make sure you are using the right password. This may seem obvious, but you might not realize off the bat that a simple typo is causing the issue.
In addition to using the correct password, you also need to use the correct network. While some smart devices support the 5GHz Wi-Fi you likely use on your phone and computers, most require a 2.4GHz wireless network. If you don’t see the 2.4GHz option when you search for nearby Wi-Fi networks, you may need to set it up manually. While 2.4GHz is slower than 5G, it has a greater range.
Speaking of range, another common problem with smart devices is that they are too far from your router. If you experience connectivity issues, try placing your device closer to your router to see if it makes a difference. If you are unable to place them closer, you can purchase a Wi-Fi range extender. Even if your smart devices work well far from the router, the distance could be causing a faster battery drain.
3. Update all your devices regularly, run the latest software, and use upgraded gear.
Just like any device, your router needs to be kept up to date. The latest smart gear will not work if you’re using a 10-year-old router. Contact your internet service provider and ask about upgrading to a newer router and/or modem. Also, make sure to update the software on all your tech, including your smart home assistants, to keep everything running smoothly. Read this to learn how to update your HomePod to the latest version of HomePodOS.
Sometimes, doing a quick router or smart device power cycle can help things run better and with fewer glitches. If you use a HomePod or HomePod mini as your hub, make sure to restart it as well. It is recommended that you do a regular reboot of all your devices every two to four weeks, even if you aren’t experiencing any problems. If restarting or power cycling doesn’t help, consider resetting your device to its factory settings.
4. If your devices activate randomly or at the wrong time, it’s time to review their settings.
Setting up smart devices correctly can take a long time and require a lot of research, but the alternative is having devices that don’t work as they should. It can save you lots of time and frustration to log into your device’s settings and see if you can tweak anything to make them better. Sometimes, even if you set everything up correctly, something will happen to mess things up—like a power outage or a network issue.
Another way to make sure your smart gear works for you and not the other way around is to take advantage of any smart zone or human recognition features. If these aren’t available in the app for that particular device, you can always set it up using a smart hub. If you are working with Apple-compatible products, you can set scenes in the Home app that turn on/off at certain times, when certain people are home, or if no one is home.
5. Adjust your privacy and security settings to protect yourself from cyberattacks and data leaks.
When you have smart devices in your home, especially ones that lock/unlock your front door, it is really important to triple-check your privacy settings. Make sure the third-party apps aren’t tracking you or accessing anything they shouldn’t. If possible, set up two-step verification to add an extra layer of protection.
When shopping for smart devices such as cameras, do some research into data ownership. Not every company has the same practices, so you may want to go with one that won’t sell or even store your private data. For more security tips, read this article and apply these methods to all smart devices, not just your iPhone.
6. Keep your device’s hardware parts in good condition.
Just because a device is smart doesn’t mean that any issue it experiences is software-related. Make sure to check any cords and make sure they are intact. Keep ports free of water or debris, and make sure your device isn’t somewhere too hot or too cold. For example, some tech could be damaged if left inside a car in the summer.
7. Get a smart home hub or smart buttons.
If you want to run your smart home smoothly, a smart home hub can make all the difference. A smart home hub will simply let you control all your smart devices using the same app, which makes it so much easier to navigate them if you have many. If you are an Apple user, then you can use a HomePod or Apple TV as your Homekit Hub, and you'll be able to use the Home app to control all your compatible devices.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, I recently purchased the Flic 2 Smart button ($169.99+). These work with Siri as well as Amazon Alexa and can be used with a wide variety of smart gear to make controlling your smart home easier. These smart buttons can be set to control your smart gear or even activate entire scenes.
Each button can be set to perform three separate actions depending on whether you press it, double-press it, or press and hold it. These buttons are small and wireless and can be placed conveniently around your home so that you can control your smart home without yelling out voice commands or getting distracted by picking up your phone to use the app. These are useful for smart devices with physical controls because you can stick the buttons anywhere that suits you, so you don't need to get up and walk over to your device.
8. Review your voice commands and avoid ambiguous phrases or anything that’s hard to remember.
A lot of smart gear comes with pre-set commands that are a hassle to change. However, personalizing these to words you more commonly use—like close vs. shut, can make it easier to manage your smart home. I’ve had to change the name of the smart lights around the house to avoid accidentally turning on the wrong light first thing in the morning before I’m able to properly enunciate.
Even if you do everything right and purchase all the newest gear, any tech can experience glitches and bugs. When shopping for smart devices to improve your life, it is important to consider if it will be convenient or just a nuisance. Also, for devices such as smart locks, it's a good idea to have backup physical keys in case of a power outage or other technical issues. We hope that our article will help you avoid these smart home frequent issues for good!

How to Find Recipes from Photos on iPhone (iOS 17)
The iPhone Photos app can identify people, different animal species, landmarks, and even recipes! Many people already like to photograph their meals before digging in. With iOS 17, a snap of your lunch will not only preserve the memory, but it can help you recreate it by suggesting a similar recipe.
Why You’ll Love This Tip:
* Recreate your favorite restaurant meals at home from a picture you took last week or years ago using Apple’s Visual Lookup.
* Discover new recipes that you know you’ll love by browsing through your digital photo albums.
* Download or screenshot a photo of a friend's meal or a restaurant menu, and your iPhone will help you recreate it at home.
How to Find Recipes from Photos Using Visual Lookup
System Requirements
This tip works on iPhones running iOS 17 or later. Find out how to update to iOS 17.
Your iPhone can look up similar recipes based on a photo you've taken of a meal. It doesn't matter if you take a photo, screenshot one on social media, or download one from the internet; you can use your iPhone's Visual Lookup to discover a similar recipe. For more iPhone tips, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. To discover similar recipes of photographed meals:
* Locate a photo of a meal in your Photos app and tap it to open it.
* Tap the i icon.
* Tap Look Up Food.
* You’ll see a list of recipes. Tap Show More to see more options.
* Swipe up and scroll to see the different options based on cooking time, calories, and serving size.
* Tap one to go to the recipe.
Pro Tip
If you search for food in the Photos app search bar, you can better navigate all the photos you’ve taken of food. It may show you cartoon images of foods or food-themed items, but it will still narrow down your search.
Now you know how to discover new recipes similar to the meals you’ve had or seen simply by searching your Photos app. Next, learn how to tag cats and dogs in your People album in the Photos app.

Best iPhone-Controlled Smart Vacuums for a Clean Home (2023)
Do you still vacuum, mop, and clean windows by hand? The good news is you can now keep your home clean using smart vacuums while you kick back and relax. You can save so much time by outsourcing your cleaning and letting AI-powered robots do all the hard work with just a tap of a button on your iPhone.
HOBOT-298 Window Cleaning Robot ($479)
One of the hardest housekeeping tasks is cleaning windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces around the home. In fact, many of us put this off for months at a time. The HOBOT-298 is one of the coolest smart robot vacuums I have ever used. All I need to do is place it on a window or a mirror and press a button. The cleaning robot does the rest on its own!
My favorite thing about the HOBOT-298 is the automatic cleaning setting that thoroughly cleans the window without any guidance. Just plug it in, secure it, and press a button on the included remote. It is also possible to control the robot with your iPhone using the free HOBOT app. However, from my experience, leaving it running on its own without any tweaks works just fine.
Although the HOBOT-298 is marketed for cleaning windows, you can use it to clean mirrors as well. Since I live in a small condo with tiny windows, I tend to use mine more to clean my floor-to-ceiling mirrors on the sliding closet doors and the mirrors in my bathrooms. Since I'm short, this mirror and window cleaning robot really makes my life a lot easier. In addition to windows and mirrors, the HOBOT-298 can be used to clean other glass or smooth surfaces, such as shower doors.
I was worried that my home was too small to benefit from this window-cleaning robot, but I could not have been more wrong! My home has never been cleaner, and it takes almost no time or effort to set up the HOBOT-298 and move it from one surface to another. It also sticks to glass surprisingly well, and after using it regularly for a month, my only concern is that my pets will attack it instead of side-eyeing it suspiciously while it works.
Teendow G20 - Robot Vacuum and Mop ($199.99)
The issue with most robot vacuums is that they are expensive and not versatile enough to clean your entire home. The Teendow G20 is the ultimate exception! Not only does this robot vacuum and mop cost a fraction of the cost of the name-brand options, but it is also a vacuum and mop combined!
The Teendow G20 can clean any type of floor, from carpets to hardwood. Plus, it can easily navigate over carpet folds, cable covers or even loose cables, flooring transition strips, etc. In addition to being able to climb over all sorts of obstacles, I am also impressed with the coverage. Many vacuum robots completely redirect when they encounter something in their way, but the Teendow is really good at changing course while thoroughly cleaning around all obstacles.
Like many other smart vacuums, the Teendow G20 can be scheduled to clean your home at certain times and even be room specific. You can also use your iPhone to steer the vacuum for a more manual cleaning. While it does a great job on its own, I always like the option of being able to control the vacuum robot with the free Teendow app to make sure that the areas I am most concerned about get clean.
Finally, I love the mop feature of the Teendow G20. Because it is such a small robot, I was worried that it wouldn't be able to hold enough water to be effective. However, it has a 6.7-ounce (200mL) water tank, which can mop over 1,290ft² without needing a refill. Overall, the Teendow G20 does a great job vacuuming and mopping my floors despite its affordable price.
iRobot Roomba i7+ (7550) Robot Vacuum ($799.99)
Roomba was one of the first models of robotic vacuums to be sold to the masses successfully. The iRobot Roomba i7+ was my first purchase from this line of products. My favorite thing about this iRobot vacuum is that it has a self-emptying feature that keeps it cleaning for up to 60 days without me having to lift a finger.
You don’t need to pair the Roomba i7+ with your phone to start cleaning, but the free iRobot Home app gives you a lot of control and options to customize your clearing routine. You can use the app to schedule cleaning, map your home, select areas that need special attention or avoidance, and so much more. You can even use the iPhone Shortcuts app to incorporate a Roomba command into your morning routine!
With so many years of experience, the Roomba line is a really reliable robot vacuum option. From my experience, there are fewer issues with the machines, and it's always easy to troubleshoot the rare problems that may occur. The app is also kept updated and is easy to use, so you can expect a smooth experience with few glitches.
The Roomba i7+ is a great option for anyone who wants a reliable hands-off cleaning experience because it does all the work for you. I like that I can schedule it or simply turn it on whenever needed, keeping the house clean in between deep cleans. Although the Roomba i7+ is on the more expensive side, it is worth the purchase, especially if you take advantage of a sales event such as Prime Day or Black Friday.
Shark ION Robot Vacuum RV761 ($215)
My first ever robot vacuum was the Shark ION Robot Vacuum that I bought refurbished on Amazon. It was an easy vacuum to get acquainted with, although I experienced a bit of trouble pairing it with my iPhone. The free SharkClean app is easy to use, and the vacuum runs smoothly. If there's ever an error, it lets you know the error number so that you can easily look it up and get it fixed again.
One thing that I really love about the Shark ION is that it can be voice controlled. However, as an iPhone user, I wish it was compatible with Siri. Instead, you need an Amazon Alexa device or a Google Assistant to use the voice-control feature. Despite this, the SharkClean app is available in the app store and works just fine on iPhones.
The Shark ION is small in size and is good at navigating small spaces, although it can get stuck on loose cords, and it requires a bit of tidying before it can do a thorough cleaning. For a longer battery life and to require fewer refills, there is an XL option available. Personally, I enjoy the regular capacity robot vacuum because emptying it more frequently and cleaning any debris from the wheels and brushes can keep it running smoother for longer.
I highly recommend the Shark ION for smaller spaces, even ones that can be cluttered, because it does a great job at cleaning up all those annoying areas like under the sofa, under tables and chairs, and it even fits under my treadmill. Due to the smaller capacity and inability to empty itself, it isn't as useful for larger homes. However, regularly emptying your robot vacuum manually can be worth saving a few hundred dollars!
We all have different needs and budgets, which is why there are so many varieties of robot vacuums. Consider device compatibility, features like voice control and self-emptying, and the size and battery life of a smart robot vacuum before you make your purchase. While it is usually true that you get what you pay for, it may surprise you that the most expensive option might not be the best for you!
