iOS 16: Everything We Know About the Next Update
When is the next iOS update? Historically, Apple announces a new iOS each year at WWDC in June, releases a beta version immediately after, and then releases the full version in the fall. We have no real reason to expect Apple to break this pattern this year and can also guess that the new OS will be called iOS 16. What else do we know about the next iOS update? Let's go over what we can expect, including which iPhones will be compatible with iOS 16 and what cool features may be coming our way.
Jump To:
* iOS 16 Release Date
* How Long Will iPhone 6S Be Supported?
* iOS 16 Features
iOS 16 Release Date
Apple typically announces its new iPhone operating system at its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in early summer. After WWDC, Apple usually releases beta versions of the new iOS, iPadOS and MacOS for users to try out and report bugs. Then, the full iOS update typically launches sometime in September. We have no reason to believe we'll see anything significantly different this year, so we're penciling in an early fall release.
How Long Will iPhone 6S Be Supported?
One of the most prevalent rumors thus far is that iOS 16 will not support the iPhone 6s. According to a leak given to the French site iPhoneSoft, the new iOS will not be compatible with iPhones that use the old A9 chip, which means the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the 2016 SE won't be able to download the new software. For some, this might indicate the end of an iPhone's lifespan, but old iPhones do technically still function on an outdated OS. Many apps might not work well or at all anymore, and it could leave you vulnerable to security breaches, though, so if you still have one of the old models, you might want this to be the year you upgrade.
iOS 16 Features
Crash Detection
Similar to the Apple Watch's Fall Detection feature, we may see a Crash Detection feature in iOS 16, according to The Wall Street Journal, that will auto-dial 911 if you're in a car accident. This isn't groundbreaking technology by any means; Google's Pixel offers something similar in its Personal Safety app and many modern cars have some sort of crash detection already built in and connected to their service. Still, the more safety features the better, in my opinion, and as someone who drives a car from the early 2010's, I wouldn't mind knowing my iPhone has my back.
Enhanced AR/VR Capabilities
There has been talk of a VR headset from Apple for some time now. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated last year that we might see a headset in 2022. If this is true, we might see expanded VR and AR capabilities in iOS 16, preparing for the launch of this new product.
Emergency Satellite Features
Another safety feature we might see with iOS 16 is emergency satellite communication, meaning if an emergency happens somewhere without cell coverage, you can still make emergency calls or send emergency messages using satellites instead.
Quick Notes for iPhone
Quick Notes is a feature available in MacOS Monterey and iPadOS 15 that allows you to type notes quickly by dragging your finger or stylus up from the bottom right-hand corner of the screen on the iPad and clicking the bottom right corner of the screen on a Mac. This opens a new note in the Notes app without you having to go manually find it. Now we're getting more into the wish list territory of the iOS 16 rumors but it seems timely for the iPhone to offer this function as well.
Interactive Widgets
We've been enjoying widgets on our iPhones for over a year now, and while they can be fun and useful, so far we can't actually do anything with them, like skip a song or take a picture. While this idea is mostly just mmore wishful thinking at the moment, considering the effort Apple has put into widgets over the past couple years, I wouldn't be surprised to see their capabilities expand in the new OS.

iPhone Life's Best of CES 2022 Award Winners
The 2022 Consumer Electronics Show was a challenge to attend this year with its hybrid setup, but that didn't stop plenty of companies from showcasing exciting new technology. While we missed exploring the venue and chatting face-to-face on the show floor, we still discovered top-quality tech, from headliners to hidden gems. The following iPhone Life Best of CES 2022 Awards go to our favorite gear hitting the shelves this year, from tiny drones, to smart faucets, to trackable backpacks.
Sony Airpeak S1 ($8,999.99)
Available now
This little drone has big potential. Sony boasts this is the “world’s smallest drone that can carry a full frame Alpha series mirrorless camera.” What this means is the camera capabilities are next-level, offering the potential for high-quality pictures and videos on a super portable frame. The drone’s stabilizing technology purportedly keeps it steady in winds up to 44 mph, opening new possibilities for different weather conditions. Repeat Flight Pattern mode takes the drone over the same course it flew before, an exciting option for monitoring seasonal changes, different times of day, or the coming and going of wildlife along a specific route. Smaller devices doing bigger things is certainly a theme we’re seeing a lot of.
Samsung The Freestyle Projector ($899.99)
Pre-order through January 23; ships February 11
Portability is the name of the game. This little projector can be transported easily, and its 180-degree design lets you angle it to fit most surfaces. Want to host a movie night out in the barn? Or watch a galaxy show on your ceiling? The potential for all that and more is there with this one, plus it has smart TV-enabled features, meaning you can stream pretty much anything anywhere, only this time you don’t actually need a screen. Its 360-degree sound gives you more seating options, too, cutting out dead zones for those who chose the wrong spot.
Moen Smart Faucet with Motion Control (Starting at $675)
Available in April
We've all grown warier of germs over the past couple years, and motion control sinks seem more brilliant than ever. I turn on the faucet before I wash my hands. Why on earth would I ever want to touch that thing? Moen is now offering a line of motion-activated faucets, saving you from the horrors of manual faucet control. Plus, the smart control allows you to set the temperature and more through your iPhone, opening up possibilities for exact water temperature that includes precise cooking instructions and making sure warm water doesn't scald your hands, especially helpful if you have small children who learn how to use the motion activation.
Targus Cypress Hero Backpack with Apple Find My Technology ($149.99)
Available spring/summer
While trackers that we can attach to our belongings have been on the rise for some time now, Targus takes it to the next level with their full-on trackable backpack. While a loose tracker has the potential to fall out of your bag or be removed by someone with malicious intent, the Cypress Hero Backpack has tracking technology built in so you don't have to worry about the tracker being separated from the device. Aside from helping you keep track of the backpack itself and the belongings inside, this backpack also adds an extra safety measure for hiking and travel. If you allow a friend or loved one to view your backpack's location, you'll have someone keeping track of you if you end up lost or off route.
Jabra Enhance Plus (Price TBA)
Coming Soon
These earbuds are designed for those who have mild to moderate hearing loss but aren't yet ready to transition to full hearing aids. It has four main features that come together for an enhanced hearing experience: Warp Compressor, which is meant to analyze and process sound in a way similar to how the human ear does, leading to a more natural experience; Digital Noise Reduction, which makes sure all the unnecessary background noise is filtered out for a cleaner sound; Digital Feedback Suppression which, as you might have guessed, manages and suppresses feedback; and Binaural Beamformer which provides sound isolation to help the listener hear and focus on the more important sounds around them. There is currently no release date or price available, but hopefully we'll see these hit the market soon. Whether or not they'll be affordable to an average consumer remains to be seen.
Garmin Venu 2 Plus ($449.99)
Available Now
Other smartwatches are catching up to the Apple Watch fast, and they're doing it in style. The Garmin Venu 2 Plus has an elegant, rounded shape that more closely resembles a wristwatch than any of Apple's offerings, and this new model allows you to take calls and use your voice assistant, making it easy to create and send text messages without having to use the screen. When it comes to health tracking, the Venu 2 has shot ahead of the pack, offering metrics you won’t find on the Apple Watch such as health snapshot, Body Battery energy monitoring, stress and hydration tracking, "fitness age" analysis, and a 9-day battery life Apple can’t compete with. Plus, it comes with more than 25 pre-loaded sports apps to keep you moving, which is a favorite feature of any smart watch.

Why is My iPhone Camera Shaking & How to Fix It
The iPhone 13 made a splash with the promise of exciting new camera capabilities. But many users have experienced issues that made them consider returning the new phones. Before you decide to throw in the towel, let me walk you through two easy ways to improve photo quality instantly on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Max Pro.
What’s in This Article
* iPhone 13 Pro Macro Mode Photography Issues
* How to Turn Off Automatic Macro Mode
* How to Turn Off Lens Correction
* Apple iPhone Camera Lenses Explained
iPhone 13 Pro Macro Mode Photography Issues
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have a fantastic new macro mode feature. Macro photography is close-up photography of small things such as plants or insects. To take these, your iPhone will automatically shift from the primary wide lens to the ultra-wide lens, which brings the subject closer and changes the focus. If the camera detects something within 5.5 inches of the lens, this will happen automatically.
The automatic mode change can happen if something passes near the lens or in low light. Sometimes this happens even if there isn't anything close to the lens, and it can be frustrating. It can even cause you to miss a moment you are trying to capture because you need to take the time to refocus your camera. The two things that help are to turn off auto macro mode and lens correction.

How to Turn Off Automatic Macro Mode
Some iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max users have noticed their iPhone camera zooming in too much, suddenly and unexpectedly. This may be due to the new auto macro mode feature rather than a camera malfunction or software glitch. To turn it off:
* Open Settings.
* Tap on Camera.
* Toggle off Auto Macro.
* With Auto Macro toggled off, you’ll have to tap on 0.5 near the shutter to make sure that the ultra-wide lens is being used to capture the photo in order to use macro mode manually.

How to Turn Off Lens Correction
Lens correction is another setting that can improve your photography, but it may also cause problems. To turn it off:
* Open Camera in Settings.
* Toggle off Lens Correction.
* When this is off, you may want to tap on the subject when taking photos and videos before you start taking photos or recording the video. This will help your iPhone use the correct lens to get the best results.

Apple iPhone Camera Lenses Explained
These troubleshooting tips may help fix the problem, but understanding how the iPhone lenses and zoom work can also be useful. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini both have a dual-lens system, which has been the norm since iPhone 7 came out in 2016. One lens is wide, while the other is ultra-wide. These phones are capable of up to 5x digital zoom.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have three lenses. Two are the regular wide and ultra-wide, while the third is a telephoto lens. These phones are capable of 15x digital zoom but also 3x optical zoom. What is a telephoto camera smartphone lens? In simple terms, a telephoto lens has a higher focal length so that you can zoom in without compromising the quality of the photo.
3x zoom means that the longest focal length is three times the shortest. So a 3x zoom means that the lens has the power to enlarge an image ten times between normal focal length and telephoto length. Here's what the difference between 1x zoom and 3x zoom looks like on an iPhone 13 Pro Max:
The difference between optical and digital zoom is also essential to note. Digital zoom uses magnification technology to enlarge the area of the image by cutting down on the megapixels, which lowers the quality of the image. This means that zoom on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini cameras is equivalent to cropping an image to magnify the subject.
Optical zoom magnifies by leveraging the physical change in a lens to adjust the distance between the camera sensor and the subject resulting in high-quality magnification. If you use the 0.5x, 1x, or 3x zoom options on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the image quality isn't compromised, making the camera significantly more powerful.
