Review: Protect Your Data with This Hardware Encrypted Portable Drive

Security and privacy is in the news, as it should be based on recent breaches, so SecureData has a way to help you keep your private stuff private. The company sells a variety of hard drives in capacities from 1 TB using a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) all the way up to an 8 TB solid state disk (SSD) although they get expensive at that size. SecureData sent me their SecureDrive BT (starting at $285) to try.

The drive connects to a Windows, Mac, Android, Linux, or Chrome based computer, using a USB 2.0 port at a minimum. The drive I tried came with a USB-C cable to work on a MacBook. The drives use hardware encryption based on AES 256 XTS, which is government-level security which helps them achieve FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification. What makes this unique and iPhone related is that you can unlock the drive using their companion DataLock app combined with Touch ID or Face ID. Thanks to Bluetooth, it supports a "Step-Away" function that locks the drive when you walk away (with your iPhone.) You can even use an Apple Watch, a PIN, and further restrict access by location and time! Imagine a hard drive that only works for you, when you are in your office, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Now that's what I call locked down!

Pros

  • Assortment of sizes from 1 TB HDD to 8 TB SSD
  • Hardware encryption based on AES 256 XTS
  • FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validated
  • Unlock using TouchID or FaceID
  • Locking "Step-Away" functionality

Cons

  • Gets expensive when you step up to high capacity SSD

Final Verdict

The SecureDrive BT from SecureData lets you balance privacy with convenience.
