Samsung Electronics to Strengthen its Neural Processing Capabilities for Future AI Applications

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it will strengthen its neural processing unit (NPU) capabilities to further extend the reach of its artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.

In line with its focus on next-generation NPU technologies, Samsung plans to create over 2,000 related jobs worldwide by 2030, which is about 10 times the current headcount. The company will also expand upon its existing collaboration with globally distinguished research institutes and universities, and support the nurturing of future talent in the field of AI, including deep learning and neural processing.

“For the coming age of AI, Samsung is committed to delivering industry-leading advancements brought to life by our NPU technologies,” said Inyup Kang, president of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “As we leverage our differentiated technology, close partnerships with global institutes and active investment in top talent, we are excited to take future AI processing capabilities to the next level.”

Samsung introduced its first NPU in the company’s premium mobile processor, the Exynos 9820, last year and plans to continue offering advanced on-device AI features for high-performance mobile chips. Applications for Samsung’s NPUs will expand into areas such as automotive processors that power in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as next-generation datacenters optimized for big data processing.

The System LSI Business and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology — Samsung’s R&D arm — together plan to extend and evolve the company’s current NPU research into novel AI hardware technologies such as neuromorphic processors that aim to operate at the level of a human brain.

Ever-So-Accurate Colors (0.4 JNCD)

By testing the response of a wide range of listeners, Dr. Olive and his team have developed an objective tool to measure the sound quality of headphones. Dubbed the Harman Target Curve, the measurement helps audio engineers design headphones that replicate the experience of listening to music in a reference listening room.

“Sound quality involves different attributes, including spectral or timbral qualities, spatial qualities and distortion, and noise. The goal for AKG is to be as neutral, accurate and transparent as possible for each of these attributes,” he explains.

Described by Dr. Olive as “a perfect marriage between science, engineering, and art,” Galaxy Buds were tuned to the Harman Target Curve by acoustic engineers at AKG. The wireless earbuds achieved a truly impressive performance on the Curve, significantly higher than other wireless earphones, winning the praise of Dr. Olive.

“The sound quality of the new Galaxy Buds is impressive,” Dr. Olive says. “It is difficult to say they have any sonic personality, which is the ultimate compliment I can give.”

Samsung Electronics Remains Top Brand in Asia  for Eighth Consecutive Year


Samsung Electronics has been named the best brand in Asia in 2019 for the eighth year in a row, according to results from ‘Asia’s Top 1000 Brands’ annual online survey conducted by Campaign Asia-Pacific in collaboration with Nielsen.

The ranking – which aggregates views from across 15 major product categories including automotive, retail, F&B and consumer electronics – is based on consumer insights and offers a clear measure of the most highly regarded brand names today.

Samsung became number one across six categories, including the most mobile-friendly brand, the strongest local brand, and the brand with the values that best align with those of respondents.

This year’s Top 1000 Brands survey also saw Samsung coming out top in the mobile phone, TV manufacturer and smart home technology categories.

The study explores consumer attitudes in 14 markets in Asia. To ensure an accurate representation through this study, the survey targets age, gender and monthly household income to establish a balanced survey landscape.


Survey Methodology

Asia’s Top 1000 Brands aggregates data from an online survey developed by Campaign Asia-Pacific and global information and insights provider Nielsen. The survey was conducted between March 13 and April 10, 2019. The study explores consumer attitudes in 14 markets: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Research relies on a total of 400 respondents in each market. In Japan, India and China, participants number 800, 1200 and 2000, respectively. To be representative of market populations, survey quotas target age, gender and monthly household income.

The study encompasses 15 major categories: alcohol; apparel and accessories; automotive; beverages; consumer electronics; courier services; financial services; food; home appliances; household and personal care; media and telecommunications; restaurants; retail; sports properties; and transport, travel and leisure. Within these major categories there are 81 sub-categories.  Categories and sub-categories change a bit each year. The main tweaks this year were: Removed Digital Experience sub-category under Consumer Electronics Changed Toothpaste sub-category under Household & Personal Care to “Dental Care” Added Toys & Games sub-category under Household & Personal Care.

Participants gave their response to the following questions:

  • Question 1: “When you think of the following category, which is the best brand that comes to your mind? By best, we mean the one that you trust the most or the one that has the best reputation in this category.”
  • Question 2: “Apart from the best brand that you entered, which brand do you consider to be the second best brand in the category?”

Samsung Electronics Underscores Its Commitment to 8K Technology at QLED Summit in New York

Samsung Electronics today sponsored the third annual QLED Summit (8K Display Summit) hosted by Insight Media, focusing on the current state and future of 8K display technology at Millennium Times Square, New York City. The Summit offered insights into Samsung’s and other industry experts’ plans for 8K displays, as well as innovations in AI upscaling technology and the advancement of HDR10+ that is helping to propel 8K into the mainstream.

At the Summit, hosted by Insight Media – a display focused consultancy, more than 100 attendees including display and equipment firms, video producers, tech media and global tech reviewers from the US and Europe showed strong interest in basic technologies related to filming and transmission of high-quality images such as 5G network technology, filming equipment and image compression codecs.

This year, the QLED summit was held under the theme of 8K display for one day with intensive sessions of ▲8K technology and current market situation ▲8K content ecosystem and ▲8K-related technologies.

At the event, experts from the 8K ecosystem along with market research firms – ranging from display panels, filming equipment, content production, as well as compression and transmission technology industry to academic circles – shared the recent direction of 8K-related technologies from various perspectives and discussed future prospects.

The activity progress of 8K Association was also shared as it held its first public seminar in the US Broadcasting equipment event NAB Show in April. Since then, the 8K Association continued their activities such as unveiling plans to gradually increase its members from the current orientation towards TV manufacturers to establish a foothold for standardization and expand the 8K ecosystem.

“With the rapid expansion of 5G wireless network technology, 8K display market is expected to make great strides,” said Sonia Chen, Director of Display Marketing at Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions America. “In particular, it will receive the spotlight among the millennial generation who are familiar with fast internet speed and high-quality image viewing.”

Professor Yung-Kyung Park, Head of the Color Design Research Institute at Ewha Womans University attended the summit to present the experimental results stating, “When we are viewing an ultra-high resolution image, our ability to recognize objects comprehensively tend to increase.”

“8K display technology is not a future technology – it is here today- and is available to viewers in Japan and other regions,” said Chris Chinnock, the president of Insight Media, who co-hosted the summit. He added, “unlike some concerns over a lack of 8K content, the development of all technologies and cooperation in the industry are proceeding rapidly. The industry prospects from experts who attended the summit are very positive, too.”

Meanwhile, guests in attendance, which included academics, industry professionals and members of the media, praised Samsung’s commitment to moving the 8K display industry forward and found value in the demonstrations of the technology through its QLED 8K TVs.

Hyogun Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics Visual Display Business, showed confidence in the mainstreaming of 8K TV, stating that “for 4K TV too, there were concerns over a lack of content in its early days, but these concerns faded away after people experienced the actual picture quality. The best picture -quality experience will be chosen by consumers after all.”

[Essay] Sharing the Light: Bringing 1,000 Solar Lanterns to Vietnamese Villagers
A recent Samsung initiative saw my colleagues make over a thousand solar lanterns and donate them to residents of places like Chieng Noi, a rural Vietnamese village with extremely limited access to electricity. I was tasked with shooting a video about the journey to donate these lanterns to the villagers – and with experiencing their way of life, far away from the urban bustle I am used to.

When a village is remote enough to lack electricity, inevitably the location will be, though eco-friendly, isolated from urban areas. Ahead of us was a painstakingly long journey, rife with the promise of encounters with various insects and new and unusual local foods – all of which at first seemed overwhelming to our group, accustomed as we were to urban life.

But the importance of our mission was undeniable, and so after much planning and preparation, we finally set off on our five-day trip to Chieng Noi, Vietnam, to bring our carefully crafted solar lanterns to the residents.


Journey to Chieng Noi

Prior to leaving on this trip, I had researched Chieng Noi and was pleased to discover that the journey seemed relatively easy. The flight from South Korea to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam, was less than five hours, and the drive from the airport to Chieng Noi was only 400km.

However, upon setting off in our cars from Noi Bai Airport, I realized it was going to be nothing like I had expected. For the seventeen hours that ensued, we drove through dust clouds that brought visibility down to almost zero. Other difficulties also arose that further hindered our progress.

The first obstacle we faced was trees felled by a storm. The sheer length and number of the fallen trees made it difficult to clear a path. Therefore, all of us, including the whole camera crew, a local coordinator and an accompanying Vietnamese government official, rolled up our sleeves to help clear the road.

After hours of hard work shifting fallen trees, we were on the road again for a while before coming across a second obstacle. The wheels of our cars had gotten stuck in mud and were spinning, but the cars wouldn’t move. What made matters worse was that the previous day, it had poured with rain, creating a huge puddle of water. Once again, all of us joined forces to fill in the puddle and push the cars along by hand, but nightfall came quickly and we decided to spend the night in a nearby residence and call a tow truck in the morning.


Chieng Noi: A Village of Kindness

As we were behind schedule, we set off early the next morning in order to reach Chieng Noi, a small village made up of only 38 households. The first impression that I received upon arrival was one of kindness – even though it was the first time the village had received visitors from overseas, we were warmly welcomed by all the villagers.

Ahead of my visit, I had learned that there would be no official accommodation for our crew, and so I had brought a tent from Korea. But upon learning this, Lo Van Toan, the head of the village, led us to his house, waving away our protests with iterations of: “it is only for a few days, please make yourself at home.”

And his hospitality did not end there. In Vietnam, there is a custom that states a host must provide his guests with delicious food. During our dinner, pork was served – a rarity for the residents of Chieng Noi. Children gathered around and looked at us with eyes filled with curiosity. As I regarded them, the 12-hour journey I had just undertaken was forgotten.

As we went around the village, I couldn’t help but note how dark it was inside the houses, even in daytime – and I could only imagine how hard it must be to see at night.

We were also lucky enough to hear stories from the villagers themselves. “Our village is a farming village,” stressed one resident. “We often don’t finish until nightfall, and then must return from the fields in darkness, often getting lost on the way back home.”

“In this village, households are located apart from each other along a slope,” noted another villager. “If an accident was to occur… Well, it is scary even to think about.” It became clear that safety was the biggest concern regarding the village’s lack of electricity.

Another concern faced by the villagers was for their children. They described it as “heartbreaking” that the lack of light makes it difficult for their children to practice reading after dark.

Each household in Chieng Noi has three to four children – and the nearest school is an hour and a half’s drive away. Therefore, children stay in a dormitory during the week and return home to the village on weekends. When they return, they have to use the daylight hours to study and do homework, which means being outside or sitting in residence doorways in order to have enough light to see by.

As night fell, we started delivering the solar lanterns. The local children were particularly excited by the lanterns, playing around with them as if they were toys and shining them on each other’s faces, laughing all the while.

The adult villagers, meanwhile, expressed to us how useful they expected the lanterns to be. “I normally have to go outside and set a fire in order to be able to prepare vegetables at night, but now I can do it at home,” noted one villager. “I did not know a solar lantern could be this bright,” said another, excited to use the lanterns to read books at night.

We delivered a total of one thousand solar lanterns to the residents of Chieng Noi. Each is expected to last around two years, assisting the villagers as they go about their nighttime activities, helping them on their journeys home, and alleviating boredom by permitting them to read at night.

Given the arduous journey and remote location of Chieng Noi, it was a challenging undertaking, but now that I am back in Korea and can reflect upon the trip, I am taken aback by what a rewarding and special experience it was. And if someone asked me if I would do it all again? I would say, of course!

And the opinion of our colleagues from Samsung Electronics Vietnam? Nguyen Phuong Uyen Thuy Anh, Corporate Communications Manager, noted how heartwarming it was to see the smiles on the faces of everyone who was involved in the lantern program, saying:“I personally am so glad that I could be part of Samsung’s philanthropic efforts!”

[Samsung’s Digital Signage Innovations] ② How Digital Signage has Become a New Communication Platform

The signage industry started out with simple, outdoor advertisement displays. Fast-forward to today’s modern digital era, signage has evolved into a comprehensive communication platform used daily for multiple business functions and to deliver information in public places.

 

Samsung Electronics has been at the forefront of this signage evolution – leading the display market for ten consecutive years while pushing the industry further, through a number of technological transformations. Samsung has overcome numerous challenges along the journey and has introduced innovative, new products year after year.

 

 

Samsung Newsroom has explored how Samsung SMART Signage has evolved in the last decade and tracked its journey through to today.

 

 

Making an Airport Debut

“What is the necessity for installing large digital signage indoors just to display information? And why is this different from or better than a TV screen?” This was the most frequently asked question for Sungtae Lee in the early 2000s when digital signage first emerged. Lee was one of the trailblazers in designing commercial signage products at Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business.

 

In many conversations, before explaining how Samsung products were different from the others, he had to introduce the value proposition of digital signage and the different ways of utilizing the products: “We had a firm belief that digital signage would profoundly change the way people communicate. But it was not accepted as easily as we had initially thought,” noted Lee.

 

Samsung Electronics installed the world’s largest indoor airport LED signage, covering a total of 1,012 square meters, at the New Istanbul Airport in 2018.

 

Perceptions changed as digital signage began to create new markets by converging with new technologies. For Samsung, this convergence and opportunity started with airports, according to Lee.

 

An airport is a large and complex structure that requires the processing of substantial amounts of information in real-time – from check-in counters to baggage claim. Naturally, digital signage products and solutions were inevitable. “Offering our proprietary software, Samsung was a pioneer in introducing a Flight Information Display System (FIDS) that was designed to remotely process video clips and deliver information through the data networks 24 hours a day. This implementation laid the groundwork for Samsung SMART Signage,” said Lee.

 

 

3.4 Times Bigger and 54 Percent Slimmer, a Decade of Efforts to Go Beyond the Limit

In the early 2000s, Samsung introduced its LCD signage, 32-inch in size. Comparing this early model to the 110-inch LCD signage, unveiled in 2014, the size of Samsung’s digital signage had increased by 3.4 times in a decade.

 

It became slimmer as well. Samsung’s latest 4K signage, introduced in 2019, is 49.7 mm thick. Compared to the first model, which was 109 mm thick, the thickness of Samsung’s digital signage has more than halved through the company’s extensive research and continuous efforts.

 

In addition, the locations to install digital signage are being diversified from airports and inside of buildings, to offices, clothing shops, bus stops, subway stations and large-sized outdoor billboards.

 

As Samsung digital signage expanded into different spaces, it required technologies that addressed the challenges presented by various environmental factors, including temperature, humidity and solar heat, such as UV rays and infrared rays.

 

 

This was how Samsung Magic Glass was born. By blocking reflected light, Samsung Magic Glass increased visibility and reduced infrared rays by 40 percent. “We adopted a distinctive heat protection technology to improve durability and also acquired high standards in waterproof, dustproof (IP56), and breakproof specifications (IK10). That’s why our digital signage works properly even with severe dust and harsh environmental conditions, and can also withstand a strong shock,” said Sehee Park responsible for planning outdoor products at the Visual Display Business’ Product Strategy Team.

 

 

Bigger and Brighter Samsung SMART Signage Leads the Trend

 

Samsung has shown its innovative leadership in the digital signage industry, most notably with the installation of its large-scale LED signage at the COEX Shopping Center in Seoul in March 2018. Connecting two walls using a single continuous screen with curved corners, the signage is comprised of approximately 31,000 LED display modules attached 10mm from each other, demonstrating an impressive level of precision and accuracy. This product is a perfect example to demonstrate Samsung’s expertise and leadership in digital signage technology.

 

“We incorporated an optimized waterproof solution into every connecting part of the display for maximum durability. Our proprietary picture quality processing technology allows the display to express colors vividly for a long period of time,” said Seungjae Soh at the Visual Display Business’ Product Strategy Team.

 

Additionally, by acquiring YESCO Electronics in 2015, a company specializing in commercial LED display, Samsung has solidified its leadership in the LED market.

 

 

Retail spaces have also presented opportunities for Samsung. Since outdoor signage is used to attract shoppers, it must immediately grab their attention and catch their eye, further demonstrating the importance of both vivid and vibrant colors.

 

To meet such needs, Samsung unveiled a high brightness signage lineup in various sizes. In particular, double-sided high brightness1 signage has been well-accepted by retail shops and Quick Service Restaurants (QSR), as it supports up to 3,000 nits for outdoor screens and 1,000 nits for indoor screens. Moreover, the latest 85˝ double-sided display can be installed at bus stops for street advertising, targeting commuters and passers-by.

 

 

In an ever-evolving industry, one of the latest trends is QLED 8K signage. Samsung is leading this innovation as well, as it was the first company to introduce an 82” ultra-high resolution 8K signage product, taking a step forward in signage innovation. Moreover, the AI-based quantum processor allows any video clip – no matter the resolution – to be converted into 8K resolution, providing a truly vivid expression of color. Samsung’s 8K product lineup is poised to expand its horizons in the second half of this year.

 

“There is a strong need for our latest 8K signage amongst luxury retail stores which want to display vivid images. In addition, thanks to our AI upscaling technology, which converts any content to 8K regardless of the original resolutions, the 8K signage is being well-received by customers. Just like we did in the last decade, we will always continue to provide industry-leading products and services,” stated Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of the Enterprise Business Team, Samsung Electronics.
