Hospitalized Students Granted State Diplomas Through Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ Program

On June 22nd graduates of Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ remote learning program received their high school diplomas from Russian Education Minister Olga Vasilieva in Moscow. The ‘Hope for Children’ project provides students with full access to the state educational curriculum through digital learning tools in hospitals where paper books are prohibited for hygienic purposes.

The ‘Hope for Children’ program seeks to address the fact that 120,000-130,000 Russian and CIS children undergo long-term, in-house medical treatment every year, and are not able to attend school. Classes are held in specially designed hospital classrooms as well as individually in cases where the child is unable to attend lessons in the classroom. Present at the graduation ceremony, the program head Sergey Sharikov said: “Staying in the hospital does not mean that children need to stop learning. Children definitely need to learn, interact with other kids and be engaged in creative processes.”

Minister Vasilieva presented diplomas in Samsung ‘Hope for Children’ branded folders to 40 ninth and eleventh graders during the graduation ceremony at Dmitry Rogachev Children’s Hospital, which in 2014 became the pilot site for Samsung’s ‘Hope for Children’ remote learning initiative. The Russian Education Ministry’s Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science has granted ‘Hope for Children’ exceptional permission allowing students to take state exams through the project. This measure empowers children unable to attend school for extended periods of time to keep up with the state exams and gain university entrance along with their peers.

Student Diploma

The Dmitry Rogachev Children’s Hospital was built by executive order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and enters around 2,000 children from more than 85 regions into the ‘Hope for Children’ program each year. Expansion of the program has been widespread, with 17 new locations introduced across Russia and other CIS countries since 2014, and three more to be added by 2020.

Other attendants of the graduation ceremony included Alexander Rumyantsev, President of the Dmitry Rogachev National Research Center, Galina Novichkova, General Director of the Center, Evgeny Yamburg, Director of The Yamburg School, and Arina Sharapova, TV Anchor and ‘Hope for Children’ project ambassador. In a special announcement, the ceremony’s organizers expressed their immense “gratitude and appreciation” to Samsung for its long-term partnership on the project.

Speaking at the graduation, Sergey Pevnev, Director of PA and Corporate Projects at Samsung Electronics CIS remarked that “Hope for Children’s mission is to allow children receiving long-term medical treatment to continue learning, be creative, interact with their peers, and – at the end – get diplomas.” He went on to point out that “Samsung’s technological solutions open up additional opportunities for students, and allow them to master the school program in an exciting, interactive format.”

Seoul After Sunset: The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, In Pictures

There’s something special about the way cities look in the nighttime. Once the day draws to an end, our favorite cityscapes come alive and we often find ourselves itching to capture the scenes in front of us with our smartphones. But without a camera able to take on the nuances and challenges of nighttime photography, this undertaking can be a fruitless one.

The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode is the perfect tool for capturing photos after the sun has gone down. Accessible from the Camera app, Night Mode can be manually toggled on and off whenever you wish to use it in the Camera app’s sliding menu. Compared with photos taken without it switched on, Night Mode minimizes the noise from a dark environment to enhance a photo’s details and corrects colors, along with other image qualities, to make the resulting low-light shots more vivid.

Samsung Seoul

Samsung Newsroom traveled to some of the top landmarks around Seoul after dark to see how the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode can bring out every detail in a nighttime scene, even in low light conditions.

A Palace for All Hours of the Day

Deoksu Palace is one of Seoul’s four ancient palaces, drawing visitors keen to take in its striking architecture day and night.

Samsung Seoul Samsung Seoul

Samsung Seoul Samsung Seoul

Junghwajeon, one of the royal courts of Deoksu Palace, was built in 1902 and has a remarkable golden exterior featuring intricate patterns, colors and textures that are not easy to capture at night. However, by simply turning on Night Mode on the Galaxy S10+, all the courts’ details come to life, thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent gradation adjustment that brings vibrancy to pictures taken after dark. Try using a tripod to level the top and bottom of the frame for an ever better shot of the ancient palace that captures every striking detail.

While the Galaxy range’s Night Mode function previously only automatically activated when conditions were very dark (below 1 lux), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode now allows users to make the most out of it as they can manually switch it on or off and use it for lighter nighttime scenes.

Stand-Out Statues Amid City Life

Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza, often bustling with pedestrians, is a place where the traditional and the modern come together. Neon lights from the buildings that flag it, along with the bright lights of passing cars, make up a vibrant patchwork of color during the nighttime, but can easily drown out the statues at the Plaza’s heart in pictures.

Seoul

Seoul Seoul

Thanks to the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, the two statues that sit right at the heart of downtown Seoul (Admiral Yi Sun-sin, first picture, Sejong the Great, second picture) can be captured without any compromise to the eclectic lighting of their surroundings. Night Mode lowers camera sensitivity and decreases shutter speed, capturing bright lighting well despite the high contrast. Paired with the Ultra Wide lens of the Galaxy S10 line, Night Mode provides after-dark shots that can capture everything in the camera’s field of vision.

When Urban Meets Rural

Naksan Park in northern Seoul features vistas that include a striking contrast between the area’s historic fortress wall, idyllic mountain views and the nighttime bustle of downtown Seoul.

Seoul Seoul

Seoul Seoul

But Galaxy S10+ users need not worry about losing any detail when capturing close (first picture) or wide (second picture) shots of scenes with such subject contrast. Without Night Mode switched on, distinct features of the landscape would be lost, with city lights obscuring lower contrast areas such as the striking mountainous terrains in the far distance. But just by switching Night Mode on, you can maximize the visibility of your shot thanks to its intelligent noise reduction that balances different areas of contrast and light to cleanly bring out a shot’s every aspect – even in low-light conditions.

Sunset By the River

The Hangang Riverside Park lights up as the sun goes down, and the variety of different lighting attractions on display reflect in the Han River to often dazzling effect. Yet capturing this display of light from a variety of different light sources, from the natural light of the fading sun to the colorful façade of the Hangang Floating Islands, can present a challenge when looking to achieve balance in twilight pictures.

Seoul Seoul After Sunset

Seould After Sunset Seoul After Sunset

With the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, pictures emerge more vibrantly thanks to its auto color-correcting software, resulting in bright and clean shots that carefully negotiate all the different sources of light on offer. For an even more vivid take, users can alter Night Mode’s settings for lower exposure correction to capitalize on the darker aspects of a scene – without losing any of the color or detail.

Bird’s Eye Views

Seoul’s Namsan Tower sits an impressive 479.7 meters above sea level, offering visitors a scenic, near-panoramic view of the city which comes to life as the sun sets.

Seoul After Sunset Seoul after Sunset

One of Namsan Tower’s best offerings to visitors is the opportunity it presents for you to capture shots of the sprawling city that lies below it – as well as of the striking tower itself against a diverse backdrop. But cloudy weather conditions add more disruptive photographic noise to pictures that obscures the details of a shot, especially for long-distance vistas.

Just by sliding Night Mode on in the Camera app, Galaxy S10+ users can take shots that bring out the vivid colors of this cityscape at night thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent noise reduction capabilities. Whether you are looking to photograph a landmark (first picture) or achieve a birds-eye view shot of a city (second picture), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode optimizes color and contrast balance to striking effect – even in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

The Bixby Marketplace is Now Officially Open in the inthe U.S and Korea

The Bixby Marketplace

The Bixby Marketplace is a one-stop shop for users to browse and add a wide range of services (known as capsules) to enhance their Bixby experience.

This new platform is now open to users in U.S. and Korea. The Bixby Marketplace’s official launch lays the foundation for an open ecosystem of useful services that developers will continuously enrich, and users will be able to make their mobile experience more personal and intuitive.

The key to Bixby’s convenience is simple: customization. Samsung’s intelligence platform is designed to learn what you like to do, and then work with your favorite apps and services to help you get more done—faster.

The Bixby Marketplace takes these customized experiences to the next level by offering easy access to a wide range of capsules that make Bixby more powerful, making it easier for users to tailor Bixby to suit their needs. The Marketplace includes a variety of convenience-enhancing capsules such as Google Maps, Spotify, iHeartRadio, NPR, Yelp and more.

Bixby Marketplace

How It Works

Users access the Bixby Marketplace from the Bixby main page. Once the user launches the Bixby main page by pressing the Bixby key, they swipe left to get to the Bixby Marketplace. Capsules are organized by categories such as Productivity, Business and Finance, Sports, Shopping, etc.

Searching by capsule name, developer or keyword makes it easy to find the capsules you need, while curated staff picks and user reviews highlight capsules that users will find particularly useful. Capsules can be added with a single tap of a button, and users can also rate and review capsules to ensure the highest quality Bixby capsules are the most visible to users in the Bixby Marketplace.

To add even more customization, users can set a capsule as the “preferred capsule” for certain types of requests. For example, if a user says “Get me a ride to San Francisco airport”, Bixby will prompt the user to pick one of the supported Rideshare capsules. Users will have the option to set their favorite provider as their preferred Rideshare capsule. Once that is set, any Rideshare request would automatically go to the user’s preferred provider, even if the user does not mention the capsule name. The ability for users to customize their own personal Bixby experience allows them to easily incorporate a wide range of capsules into their everyday lives.

What’s Next?

Samsung will continue to improve the Bixby platform and evolve the Bixby Marketplace to support developer needs and enhance the experience for all our users. Developers will continue to add more capsules to the Bixby Marketplace over the next few months. Samsung plans to share more exciting updates at Samsung Developer Conference 2019 (SDC19) which will be held on October 29–30 in San Jose, California. Stay tuned!

Why Is Instagram Content So Important?

You can hardly find a person who doesn’t know what Instagram is. And you can barely find internet marketers who don’t use Instagram in their marketing campaigns. Instagram is very popular and some even think that it will overtake Facebook. Actually, Facebook and Instagram are now closely collaborated, which only strengthens both of them.
Let’s look further into the figures about Instagram to understand its place in today’s society:
Popularity (source):
  • 1 billion monthly active users;
  • 8 million business profiles (other sources – up to 25 million);
  • 95+ million daily posts;
  • 35% of US adults use Instagram.
Influence (source):
  • 53% of users were inspired by Instagram posts in choosing holiday travel;
  • 43% of users at least once visited an event announced or promoted via Instagram;
  • 48% of users have tried a lifehack or a new workout found on Instagram;
  • 60% of users have visited a restaurant or cafe being assured by a review read on Instagram.

Why Instagram?

It is well-known that images are the most popular source of content along with videos. Visual content is what we really love and prefer. Images and videos is the main essence of Instagram. It’s built around users’ ability to share their recent photos and videos shot on their smartphones.
Nearly all types of information can be found on Instagram: favorite places, favorite people,  pets, flowers, goods and products review, tips and hints, anything you can imagine. Instagram’s main idea is to bring the most useful information in the most convenient way as fast as possible.
Instagram possess all the main advantages of microblogging: conciseness and pithiness like Twitter, accessibility, and sociality like Facebook. Simply remember how many times you wished to capture an extraordinary moment or experience from your everyday life and immediately share it with your friends. This what Instagram is for.

Why do you need Instagram content?

We can look at Instagram not just like at a great opportunity to share our latest news, but also as a tremendous source of quality content. Instagram can help you stay relevant in any topic, in any niche and in any aspect of your life.
Here is 5 main reasons why you should consider Instagram content:
  1. Media content is very popular. Once again, media content is a bread and butter of any content strategy. And Instagram is all about images and videos;
  2. Instagram is full of influencers and brands. All major business and celebrities have their Instagram profile which is regularly updated. Having an Instagram profile is the new “industry standard” now.
  3. Instagram content is considered to be of high quality and engaging. In order to gain popularity among followers many users and companies put sufficient efforts to produce decent pieces of content, regularly.
  4. Instagram content is very original. Instagram individual users are also very creative. Instagram, in its turn, provides lots of content editing features;
  5. Instagram is dynamically updated. You can be sure that at any moment of time you can find fresh posted content.

Ready to meet Instagram in RSS Ground?

The Smartest Meeting Ever, Introducing the 2019 ‘Samsung Flip’

As needs for a smart meeting environment are increasing, there is growing interest in the 2019 Samsung Flip. The audience at the recent InfoComm 2019 had a chance to try the product, and when they experienced it, they were amazed at the speed of the pen and texture of the brush as well as how real it felt to use this digital white board. Samsung Newsroom summarizes the 2019 Samsung Flip with various functions for a digital meeting environment in three keywords: pen, convenience and design.

Samsung Smarter Meeting

Pen: The Connection Between a Display and its User

The 2019 Samsung Flip’s extraordinary writing recognition technology is one of the key elements of improvement. The product provides a passive pen without electronic components inside, rather than an active pen with electric circuits. Users can decide to write on the display with the pen provided with the Samsung Flip but this can be replaced with other objects such as a pen, pencil or even small sticks instead. The 2019 Samsung Flip has an enhanced ability to recognize the thickness of writing objects and reflect the thickness on the display.

Smarter Meeting

The 2019 Samsung Flip is exceptional in its writing recognition speed and it has no delay whatsoever. With improved recognition speed compared to the previous Samsung Flip, the new product is the fastest in the industry. It also delivers the feel of analogue in a digital environment via the flip pen. For example, the wooden material flip pen provides the feel of using a pencil. With this feature, users are able to write or draw on the screen using the slim profile of a realistic pencil tool.

To support the ideation process in meetings, the pen mode’s ability to recognize an object’s thickness provides four options – thin pen, highlighter, finger eraser and palm eraser. The feature allows users to have an analogue meeting environment as if they were using a real marker, highlighter and eraser. Additionally, the new brush mode of the 2019 Samsung Flip is another fresh and innovative concept. It emphasizes more detail by allowing recognition touch on the display in 1,024 detailed levels. It even recognizes the most delicate touch of a brush.

Smarter Meeting

When you draw on the 2019 Samsung Flip display with Brush mode, the screen recognizes the thickness of the brush you use. They are all perfectly expressed on the display just like an analogue painting. Users can experience two types of paint textures – oil painting and water painting.

For example, when you draw a blue line in the oil painting mode and draw a yellow line on top, the two colors will be mixed where they overlap each other. As if you were using real paint that had not dried yet, the two colors will mix together into a green color, just like an oil painting on a canvas. And if you click on the drying paint option and draw a new line, the previous lines dry up and prevent any new colors from mixing together.

Convenience for Everyone to Use Easily

The 2019 Samsung Flip values user convenience as the top priority. For the first time, the Samsung Flip was made to help those who experience difficulties in meetings where the digital and the analogue come together, causing complexities in an office. We wanted to make the entire process of making a presentation, writing content on a white board, taking pictures of the final meeting results and sharing them as simple as possible. Moreover, the 2019 Samsung Flip also adds various new functions to enhance the user experience.

The Note-Layer function allows you to freely take notes on documents or pictures shown on the display. Utilizing the ‘Selection Tool’ and ‘Merge to Roll’ functions make your image editing much easier. For example, you can put an illustration on a roll and choose the ‘Selection Tool’ to cut out only the selected parts from the illustration. Then, you may choose ‘Merge to Roll’ to paste the cut-out images onto the roll. These images are recognized as the same as the actual drawings, so you are free to delete the background or edit the images.

If you click the upper portion of the display, it will trigger the intuitive function icons for bringing data from a mobile device, PC or USB to the Flip as well as sending completed work from the Flip to email, printer, USB or network drive. This allows people who use the product for the first time to move data with ease. Also, using the ‘To-Mobile’ function, which allows users to take advantage of the basic network storage implemented in the Flip, you can check your completed work from the Flip directly on your mobile device without sending the data through email or other additional methods.

The screen share feature is also very useful. The 2019 Samsung Flip can be connected to a bigger display through the screen share function when you need to deliver content to a big audience such as in a large-scale lecture. You can use a wireless connection or you can use the screen share terminal of the Connected Tray in front of the 2019 Samsung Flip to connect the two displays using a HDMI cable. Samsung Flip was originally targeted to architectural design offices and design companies where small-scale face to face idea meetings are frequent. After launching the first product, it received such high praise from the users. As they wanted to use the product in more diverse areas, the 2019 Samsung Flip’s target has expanded to conglomerate conference halls, large seminar rooms, schools and hotel conference rooms with a larger 65-inch screen and various features.

The Flip also has the Remote PC function to follow the recent office trend of working on remote desktop computers. The users can access their own desktop or laptop computers from the Flip to view or edit data, which can be seamlessly used in a meeting environment. Also, you can load documents from your personal cloud space using Microsoft OneDrive, Office 365 and Web Browser that are going to be serviced in the Flip from September. The 2019 Samsung Flip is a reassuring partner in a digital meeting environment.

Thanks to Design, Your Meetings Become More Interesting!

One of the highlights of the 2019 Samsung Flip is its design. First, you see its light gray color. Jae-gwang Lee from Samsung Visual Display, the developer of this product, says, “Similar to the previous model, the 2019 Samsung Flip has light colors to make sure it feels accessible and usable for people. The product uses light colors, particularly a light gray color to be well harmonized not only in offices and meeting rooms but also in trendy meeting spaces.”

The Flip’s wall-mounted design is also noteworthy. Its ‘no gap wall mount’ design allows the display to be completely attached to the wall, giving it a sleek and clean appearance. Other than the wall mount on the back of the display, the product is installed with magnet brackets on all four corners on the back to prevent moving and providing stability. The pen illustration on both sides of the display where you place your pens is simple and modern, capturing every detail of its elegant design.

The 2019 Samsung Flip makes your conference room and classroom trendy. Jae-young Kim, product planner at Samsung Visual Display, says, “The 2019 Samsung Flip offers a smart office and modern work environment where users can rapidly capture ideas, share them with other people and save them without any difficulties.”

The 2019 Samsung Flip has the convenience of digital yet captures the feel of the analogue. While providing a certain comfort of old technology, it will provide the best optimized modern meeting environment with the three key features of pen, convenience and design.

Samsung Electronics Introduces A High-Speed, Low-Power NPU Solution for AI Deep Learning

Deep learning algorithms are a core element of artificial intelligence (AI) as they are the processes by which a computer is able to think and learn like a human being does. A Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is a processor that is optimized for deep learning algorithm computation, designed to efficiently process thousands of these computations simultaneously.

Samsung Electronics last month announced its goal to strengthen its leadership in the global system semiconductor industry by 2030 through expanding its proprietary NPU technology development. The company recently delivered an update to this goal at the conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), one of the top academic conferences in computer vision fields.

This update is the company’s development of its On-Device AI lightweight algorithm, introduced at CVPR with a paper titled “Learning to Quantize Deep Networks by Optimizing Quantization Intervals With Task Loss”. On-Device AI technologies directly compute and process data from within the device itself. Over 4 times lighter and 8 times faster than existing algorithms, Samsung’s latest algorithm solution is dramatically improved from previous solutions and has been evaluated to be key to solving potential issues for low-power, high-speed computations.

Streamlining the Deep Learning Process

Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has announced that they have successfully developed On-Device AI lightweight technology that performs computations 8 times faster than the existing 32-bit deep learning data for servers. By adjusting the data into groups of under 4 bits while maintaining accurate data recognition, this method of deep learning algorithm processing is simultaneously much faster and much more energy efficient than existing solutions.

Samsung’s new On-Device AI processing technology determines the intervals of the significant data that influence overall deep learning performance through ‘learning’. This ‘Quantization1 Interval Learning (QIL)’ retains data accuracy by re-organizing the data to be presented in bits smaller than their existing size. SAIT ran experiments that successfully demonstrated how the quantization of an in-server deep learning algorithm in 32 bit intervals provided higher accuracy than other existing solutions when computed into levels of less than 4 bits.

When the data of a deep learning computation is presented in bit groups lower than 4 bits, computations of ‘and’ and ‘or’ are allowed, on top of the simpler arithmetic calculations of addition and multiplication. This means that the computation results using the QIL process can achieve the same results as existing processes can while using 1/40 to 1/120 fewer transistors2.

As this system therefore requires less hardware and less electricity, it can be mounted directly in-device at the place where the data for an image or fingerprint sensor is being obtained, ahead of transmitting the processed data on to the necessary end points.

The Future of AI Processing and Deep Learning

This technology will help develop Samsung’s system semiconductor capacity as well as strengthening one of the core technologies of the AI era – On-Device AI processing. Differing from AI services that use cloud servers, On-Device AI technologies directly compute data all from within the device itself.

On-Device AI technology can reduce the cost of cloud construction for AI operations since it operates on its own and provides quick and stable performance for use cases such as virtual reality and autonomous driving. Furthermore, On-Device AI technology can save personal biometric information used for device authentication, such as fingerprint, iris and face scans, onto mobile devices safely.

“Ultimately, in the future we will live in a world where all devices and sensor-based technologies are powered by AI,” noted Chang-Kyu Choi, Vice President and head of Computer Vision Lab of SAIT. “Samsung’s On-Device AI technologies are lower-power, higher-speed solutions for deep learning that will pave the way to this future. They are set to expand the memory, processor and sensor market, as well as other next-generation system semiconductor markets.”

A core feature of On-Device AI technology is its ability to compute large amounts of data at a high speed without consuming excessive amounts of electricity. Samsung’s first solution to this end was the Exynos 9 (9820), introduced last year, which featured a proprietary Samsung NPU inside the mobile System on Chip (SoC). This product allows mobile devices to perform AI computations independent of any external cloud server.

Many companies are turning their attention to On-Device AI technology. Samsung Electronics plans to enhance and extend its AI technology leadership by applying this algorithm not only to mobile SoC, but also to memory and sensor solutions in the near future.

1 Quantization is the process of decreasing the number of bits in data by binning the given data into sections of limited number levels, which can be represented in certain bit values and are regarded as having the same value per section
2 Transistors are devices that control the flow of current or voltage in a semiconductor by acting as amplifiers or switches

[Editorial] Welcome Galaxy A; Samsung’s New Series of Smartphones to Fit Every Individual Lifestyle, Need and Passion

At Samsung, consumers are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why, last September, I announced a shift in our mobile strategy. We saw a whole new generation of people using smartphones at a younger age and embracing new innovations sooner. To capture their hearts and minds, we needed to rethink our device offerings to better meet their unique lifestyles, needs and passions.

This generation, also known as Generation Z will account for 40% of mobile device demand in the next decade. Priding themselves on spontaneity and creativity, these digital natives don’t just shoot stills, they create music videos. They’re adding filters and experimenting with AR effects. They’re conversing through Gifs & stickers and sharing their life story through videos across multiple social platforms.

I’m learning a lot from them. One thing is for certain. We see a movement from the ‘era of the selfie’ to the ‘era of live’. ‘Live’ is driving mobile video growth at an unprecedented pace, for example, live video consumption is expected to increase by 870%, making up 78% of total mobile data traffic by 2021.1

This new generation is buying a mobile device to share, chat and watch content: 92% to do so through social media channels, 86% to use chat and instant message and 85% to view and share videos.2

But ‘live’ can only thrive if device technologies empower people to interaction through spontaneous, collaborative, and genuine connections. This requires a change.

I am proud to share that less than a year after announcing our renewed strategy, we are introducing the rebirth of the Galaxy A – a diverse range of smartphones built for the new era of communication, we call the ‘Era of Live’. This upgraded portfolio features improvements to the everyday essentials, offers the latest technologies, and ultimately provides an option for everyone, whether first-time mobile users or value-seekers looking for great features at an affordable price.

At Samsung, we are inspired by the energy and inventiveness of this new generation. We’re excited to be able to deliver the best screen, the best camera and the best battery in the segment so users can maximize the potential of live communication.

Galaxy A sits within the Galaxy ecosystem so people can extend their mobile experiences seamlessly and effortlessly. One UI enables users to have the same experience with the other Samsung flagship devices. Defense-grade Samsung Knox helps Galaxy A users stay safe and secure. Not compromising performance and experience, the brand-new Galaxy A portfolio is comprised of a wide-range of devices with different specifications and price points, ensuring that everyone can find an optimal device that helps them fulfill their goals.

But our efforts won’t stop here, our vision is to be the innovator of new mobile experiences that flow with us seamlessly and continuously wherever we go. By harnessing the power of 5G and AI, we will pioneer a new generation of immersive, personal and intelligent experiences. Experiences that reach across every device, platform and brand.

The Galaxy A is an exciting milestone along this important journey. And we can’t wait to see what users do with these new devices.
