Why I Ditched My Apple Watch for the Oura Ring

Every morning for the past three months, I wake up wearing a shiny gold ring on my right pointer finger. If you look closely, you can see beams of red or green light leaking out the sides as it scans my heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature. I roll out of bed, grab my phone, and open the Oura app.

There, I see my daily health briefing. My Sleep and Readiness score give me a snapshot that helps me plan my activities for the day. Readiness score in the 70s? Perhaps I’ll work from home and go on a walk with my German Shepard. Readiness score above 80? Time to hit my high-intensity spin class! Next, I quickly approve the activities my ring detected in the last 24 hours—the quick walk I took over lunch and the afternoon pickleball session. Finally, I sync my data with the Natural Cycles app so I can see where I am in my cycle.

If I want to dig deeper, I can see a full breakdown of my night’s sleep, including the timing of REM and deep sleep. I’ve discovered how important those early hours of sleep are—all my deep sleep takes place before 2 a.m.! I can also see my Daytime Stress levels, resilience score (how you respond to physiological stress), and even my Chronotype (which calculates my body type’s preferred hours of rest and activity). All of this happens within a couple of minutes, and then I’m ready to go about my day. For more on the latest tech, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

I decided to give Oura a try after years of wearing an Apple Watch. This decision came from a shift within me. My Apple Watch was great at encouraging me to do just a little bit more than I thought I could, whether that was training for a half marathon or reaching my stand goal for the day. As someone who has a tendency toward burnout, I realized I needed encouragement to slow down.

That’s where Oura Ring shines. In a refreshing change in psychology, Oura Ring puts sleep and stress reduction at the center of the story and helps me align my life choices around promoting that. It’s for people who want to be more in tune with what their body needs—choosing to push harder or rest in a more contextual, holistic way.

I’ll be honest, though, you may find the fitness tracking features lacking. While accurate with walks and pickleball, Oura has often missed spin, HIIT, or yoga classes altogether. My Oura (and my partner) always know when I fall asleep halfway through a movie, though!

The Oura Ring also helps me place more emphasis on my sleep hygiene. Alcohol and caffeine are not your friend when it comes to sleep. More than anything though, it’s taught me that stress is my biggest enemy. On days that Oura reports high levels of Daytime Stress, my Sleep Score suffers the most. A good wind-down routine that involves putting away my phone and computer before 9 p.m. along with general stress management techniques like thinking of five things I’m happy about before bed make the biggest difference to my score.

A word of caution—Use Oura as a tool to make healthy changes, but don’t let poor scores get you down. You, like me, may be using the Oura Ring because you’re struggling with sleep and stress. The first week I wore my ring, I slept even worse because I was so worried about getting a bad grade in the morning. I eventually had to kindly ask my partner to stop sharing his consistently-over-90 sleep scores.

Oura Ring Generation 3 (Starting at $299 + $5.99/month)

Pros:

* Easy setup (though you do need to have them send you a sizing kit before you order).

* Easy to use. Just wear it and check the app daily.

* Waterproof and long battery life (4–7 days) means you can always wear it.

* Realistic, helpful suggestions customized to you.

* Stress tracking. Oura can tell you when your stress has spiked using heart rate variability readings.

* Accurate sleep readings that match sleep lab polysomnography about 80 percent of the time.

* Fertility tracking integration with Natural Cycles.

Cons:

* Sleep score can cause sleep anxiety.

* The ring is bulky on smaller hands.

* Subpar fitness tracking.

* Expensive up-front with an ongoing cost.

Now I privately assess my own scores and use them as a tool for self-reflection—no comparing allowed!—and it gives me so many valuable insights that now I don’t like ever missing a day with Oura.

Best Photography Gear for 2024

I turned 72 this year and have been enjoying photography for close to 50 years. I started with a Pentax 35mm film camera and while taking photos of my children one day in the living room with a wonderful light coming in my south window, I captured several images that were accidentally extraordinary. With that experience, I was hooked. Fast forward 30–40 years, and now I enjoy an incredibly rich universe of photographic capabilities I can carry around in my pocket.

Embracing the Apple Ecosystem

I adopted the iPhone as soon as it came out in 2007. Over the years, I have usually bought the latest phone for its updated photo capabilities and have become an Apple fan with a Mac mini desktop, two MacBooks, an iPad, and an Apple Watch Ultra. All of these devices have their place in the enjoyment and processing of my photography.

Nature Photography and the Power of the Canon R5

I also enjoy nature photography and have acquired a Canon R5 mirrorless, full-frame camera with several long lenses for getting close shots of birds, flowers and all things natural. I find that it helps me see the world with fresh eyes and by capturing the experiences in images I can enjoy and share them with others.

At the center of this universe is my iPhone with its almost unlimited capabilities. It is my core device for capturing images, minor edits, managing my library, and sharing with the world. Here are some of the apps that enhance my iPhone photography experience:

Apple Photos - (Free)

This app is the window into the Apple photography ecosystem and has so many capabilities for the storage, viewing, sharing, and editing of your photos. You can mark your favorites and create folders, including smart folders that import your chosen category automatically. Your photos are replicated via the cloud for viewing on any device you are logged into with your Apple ID. Its integration with Apple’s backend AI processing enhances the experience. It is all most everyday casual photographers need to fully enjoy and process their photos.

Apple Watch Camera Remote

The Apple Watch supports remote control of the Camera app right on your wrist. One of the best uses for this I have found is when taking group family photos. Set your iPhone up on a tripod and line up the family. You can then see what your camera sees right on your wrist and trip the shutter with a three-second delay giving time to evoke a smile from everyone. Works like a charm. Alternatively, you can set your camera up in hard-to-reach places and take the photo via your watch for creative shots.

Canon Camera Connect - (Free)

With the convenience of the iPhone camera, I don’t use my Canon camera as often as I used to. It is still my go-to tool for nature photography and I enjoy capturing images and videos of nature subjects. My iPhone still comes into the picture though as the core device in this universe of photography as well.

With my iPhone, I use Canon’s Camera Connect app to control the camera when it is mounted on my tripod. With the remote live viewing of what the camera is seeing and to trigger the shooting, it can be more convenient than looking through the lens or viewing on the cameras screen and allows releasing the shutter without any vibration for tack-sharp images. Secondarily I can use the app to transfer the cameras images to my iPhone for integration into my image processing workflow. Very handy. Canon also provides an app that allows you to upload your images to the cloud in real time. I have tested this but have opted to use my iPhone and desktop system instead.

Advanced photographers may want to explore using file formats that contain more of your images’ information. On the Canon camera, they are called RAW files, on the iPhone, you can opt to save your photos in RAW Max by tapping the button on your Camera app screen. Apple’s ProRAW format combines the RAW format along with iPhone image processing to offer additional creative control when you adjust parameters like exposure, color, and white balance.

These RAW formats take up a lot more storage on your devices but give maximum flexibility for editing your images to perfection. This means you may want additional capability to sort, catalog, and backup your image files.

Mylio - (Free or $9.99/month)

One of my most recent finds is an app call Mylio, an iPhone and desktop application for cataloging, editing, and backing up my images. It fills a need that the Photos app does not handle very well. I capture so many images with only a handful that are really good, so I struggle with the constant process of sorting the good from the bad and deleting them to manage the storage they take and the mental space of having to look through them all to find the best ones. Photos does not do this very well and it can only mark a photo with a single “favorite” status. Mylio provides a 5-star rating system as well as tags to evaluate and catalog all of your images quickly and efficiently.

It manages your images in batches for quick editing, backs up all images to multiple local and online storage locations, preserves the original file, and has decent editing tools for more detailed editing of individual images plus ties to Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop to embellish from there. Although this software may be geared to the professional photographer, as an amateur with tens of thousands of images, I have found it fills a missing capability in the processing and management of my library of images. If you are an avid photographer and want to be more organized, you may want to look into this software. They have a free and a more capable paid version of this software.

Insta360 Gimbal - $146

I have recently been enjoying more of the video capabilities of my iPhone and have acquired a gimbal to enhance the capability to capture excellent footage. This three-axis gimbal is quite a marvel of technology packed into a very compact package. You feel like a pro with this device keeping your shots steady and greatly increasing the range from down low, to above your head you can shoot from with less effort due to the telescoping extension of the gimbals handle. I have been able to have a lot of fun shooting family videos. It has a built-in tripod, or you can mount it on any tripod, where, with the tracking capability, can track a chosen subject you are wanting to capture. By setting it up on your desk for video calls it will track you—keeping you in the frame as you move around on a video call or capture a video of your latest and greatest culinary creation without the need for a separate camera person. This just scratches the surface of this devices many capabilities and it is an incredible value for the cost.

Moment Lenses

The three lenses on the Pro iPhones do cover most of your photographic needs, but if you want to enhance that capability even more, there are a few add-on lenses available in the marketplace. I recently acquired several lenses from Moment with interesting results. You need a Moment iPhone case which has a snap-in bracket that sits over the iPhone lenses to twist and lock on the Moment lens over the iPhone lens.

I tested their 10x macro, fisheye, and telephoto lenses and found that each extends the standard lenses capabilities providing images not available with the standard lens and with sharper results where the focal lengths were similar to the built-in lens. The bottom line: additional image options and more creative shots. The lenses are excellent quality and are easy to use but do require that you bring them with you, so they’re another thing to keep track of. You also have to snap them on and off for a given use, so they’re not as convenient as the built-in lenses. These are a nice addition to the photographer’s arsenal, and I would recommend them for the quality images they produce.

Learning & Experimenting

The beauty of photography, whether with iPhones or other cameras, lies in the constant discovery—new devices, innovative apps, and ever-evolving techniques to try. So, grab your camera, smartphone, or whatever inspires you to capture the world around you, and go create something new and beautiful. Happy shooting!

How to Share Slideshow on iPhone

The Slideshow feature within the Photos app is a great way to quickly show off your photos. However, you can't easily share a slideshow. If you want to create a slideshow in the Photos app and save it or send it to friends and family, you'll need to create what's called a Memory Video. Once you've saved the video, you can send it to your contacts. Here's how to send a slideshow on an iPhone.

Why You'll Love This Tip:

Fixed: Universal Clipboard Not Working

What to Know

* The Universal Clipboard allows you to copy something on one device and paste it on another.

* If you experience the Universal Clipboard feature not working, double-check that your devices are compatible and running the latest software.

* Finally, make sure Handoff and Bluetooth are on both devices.

If the Universal Clipboard feature isn’t working on your Apple devices, we can help you fix the issue. We will walk you through two scenarios: how to fix the Universal Clipboard feature when it stops working right and if it doesn’t in the first place.

Jump To:

* Universal Clipboard Not Working Once Set Up

* How to Fix Universal Clipboard Stopped Working

* FAQ

Universal Clipboard Not Working Once Set Up

If you've set up your Universal Clipboard and notice that you aren't able to copy on one device and paste on another, it could be due to several issues. First, make sure you set up the Apple Universal Clipboard feature correctly on all your devices. This means checking for compatible devices and software and also making sure that all your devices are set up under the same Apple ID and running the latest software so that they are compatible with each other. Finally, make sure that you are attempting to copy and paste something that can actually be copied and pasted, such as links, photos, and large text.

Universal Clipboard won't be on every Apple device. You need an iPhone SE (1st Generation) or later running iOS 10 or later, a fifth-generation or later iPad running iPadOS 10 or later, and a Mac running macOS Sierra or later. Once you confirm hardware and software compatibility, make sure to check your settings, primarily that Handoff and Bluetooth are enabled on the device you are trying to copy from and the device you are trying to paste to. Finally, you can try restarting your devices, turning the Handoff feature and Bluetooth off, and then back on again. For more detailed steps, follow the instructions below.

How to Fix Universal Clipboard Stopped Working

Once you’ve gotten the hang of the Universal Clipboard feature on your devices, you will never want to go back! So when you experience the Universal Clipboard not working, it is super frustrating, but we’ll help you fix it.

Note

The steps below should be taken on the devices that you are copying from and the devices that you are pasting to; most steps are really similar, if not the same, on your iPhone and iPad.

1. Make sure your Bluetooth is enabled on all your devices. You can also try turning it off and then back on again.

The Bluetooth settings can be found in the Control Center of all your Apple devices. We have device-specific articles if you need a refresher on how to turn Bluetooth off and then back on again on your iPhone or iPad and on your Mac. You can even add the Bluetooth icon to your Menu bar for easier access.

2. Restart your devices.

Turning your devices off then back on again can fix random glitches and other software problems on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. To restart an iPhone X or later, press and hold the Side button and volume up buttons simultaneously, then use the slider to power your phone off. Then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears to turn it back on.

The steps to turn off an iPad depend on the model and what buttons it has. If you have an iPad with a Home button, long press the top button of your iPad for approximately three seconds, then use the slider to turn it off. On iPads that have Face ID or Touch ID, long press one of the volume buttons and the top button simultaneously, and then use the slider to power off. To turn an iPad back on, press and hold the top button (Power button) until the Apple logo appears.

Restarting a Mac is even easier because there is a designated Restart button. Just click on the Apple icon on the left of your Menu bar, then select Restart, and confirm that you want to restart it. If your Mac is frozen, you can press and hold the power button to turn your Mac off (and again to turn it back on). If you like tips like this, be sure to sign up for our Tip of the Day newsletter.

3. Make sure all your devices are up to date.

Sometimes, a known glitch can be the cause of an issue like the Universal Clipboard feature not copy-pasting between devices. Updating your device will path known bugs. Keeping your devices up to date is good practice for security reasons too. You can update your iPhone and iPad by going into Settings, then General, and tapping on Software Update.

To update your Mac, click on the Apple logo on the top left of your Menu bar and select System Settings. From there, navigate to General, then click on Software Update.

4. Make sure your devices have Handoff enabled. You can also try turning it off and then back on again.

When you originally set up your Universal Clipboard, you enabled Handoff on your devices. It is possible that you accidentally turned off the settings, so it is a good idea to check if it really is enabled. On an iPhone and iPad:

* Open Settings and tap General.

* Select AirPlay & Handoff.

* Make sure Handoff is toggled on. It might be a good idea to toggle it off and then back on again to see if it reboots the features.

To make sure that Handoff is enabled on your Mac:

* Click on the Apple logo on the top left of your Menu bar and select System Settings.

* Navigate to General and click on AirPlay & Handoff.

* Make sure that Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices is enabled. It might be a good idea to toggle it off and then back on again to see if it reboots the features.

5. If Universal Clipboard still doesn't work, reset the network settings on your devices.

The next step to try is resetting the network settings on your iPhone and iPad. Do keep in mind that resetting your network settings removes your saved Wi-Fi connections and means you'll have to enter Wi-Fi passwords again after the reset.

6. Sign out of your Apple ID on your devices and sign back in.

 For the Universal Clipboard to work correctly in the first place, all the devices you wish to copy from and paste to must be signed in to the same Apple ID. If nothing else worked, you may want to try signing out of your Apple ID on the devices you wish to use the Universal Clipboard on and then sign back in. On an iPhone and iPad:

* Open Settings and tap on your name at the top of the screen.

* Scroll to the very bottom and select Sign Out, then follow the on-screen directions to finish the sign-out process. You will need your passcode to sign out and sign back in again.

To sign out of your Apple ID on a Mac:

* Click on the Apple logo on the top left of your Menu bar and select System Settings. Then click on your name at the top of the settings.

* Scroll to the very bottom and select Sign Out, then follow the on-screen directions to finish the sign-out process. You will need your passcode to sign out and to sign back in again.

7. Reset your Mac’s clipboard using the native Terminal app.

The final step to try before contacting Apple Support is to try resetting your Mac’s clipboard using the native Terminal app. You can find the app by typing “Terminal” into"the search bar or in the Finder's Application folder inside Utilities.

* Open the Terminal app.

* Type the command “pbcopy < /dev/null” in the Terminal and press Enter.

* Press Return (Enter) on your keyboard.

Image courtesy of Apple.

* Now you can check to see that the clipboard is empty by opening Finder and then clicking on Edit.

* Click on Show Clipboard. Here, you will see if there's anything saved to your Mac's clipboard.

Now you know how to troubleshoot your devices’ Universal Clipboard not working. The universal clipboard feature is really useful and one of the reasons why the Apple ecosystem is so popular. I love to copy content from one device and paste it on another without having to AirDrop or text myself. Next, learn how to move an open app from iPhone to Mac.

FAQ

* What is Universal Control? Universal Control is an excellent multitasking tool that lets you control other Macs and iPads from your Mac. It is easy to set up and can make it easier to navigate between multiple devices.

How to Slow Down a Video on iPhone: The Easiest Way

What to Know

* You can record video in Slo-Mo on iPhone using Slo-Mo mode in the Camera app.

* If you forget to record in Slo-Mo, you can use iMovie to slow down the video.

* The iMovie app has a slider that can slow down and speed up videos.

Slowing down a video is a good way to make the shot more dramatic. Luckily, the iPhone has a Slo-Mo option built in to make shooting slow-motion video more convenient. However, what if you forgot to switch to Slo-Mo mode? Let’s find out how to slow down a video on the iPhone.

How to Make a Video Slow Motion

There are two main ways to slow down a video on iPhone. The easiest way is to shoot with the iPhone’s Slow-Mo mode, which is native to the Camera app. You can then edit the video on your iPhone and choose where you want the slowdown to occur.

But what should you do if you forget to shoot in Slo-Mo mode? Is there a way to slow down a video on your iPhone? There is! For more tips on shooting video on your iPhone, be sure to sign up for our free Tip of the Day newsletter.

How to Slow a Video Down on iPhone

If you didn’t shoot your video using Slo-Mo mode, then you can always use the iMovie app to slow down the video. The effect won’t feel as smooth as when shooting in Slo-Mo, but it will still slow down the action. Here’s how to slow down a video on iPhone:

* Open iMovie.

* Tap Start New Project and select Movie.

* Tap the video you want to slow down, and then tap Create Movie.

* Tap the video in the editing track.

* If the video is cropped, tap the zoom icon. If it is not cropped, skip to step 7.

* Pinch the video to zoom it out.

* Tap the speed icon (it looks like a car’s speedometer).

* Tap and drag the slider toward the turtle icon to slow down the video. The closer the slider is to the turtle, the slower it will be.

* Tap Done.

* Tap the share icon.

* You may see the Export and Share menu. If you do, tap Save or Share Video. If you don't see this screen, simply move on to the next step.

* Scroll down and tap Save Video.

* Wait for the video to export and tap OK.

Note

If your source video was filmed in portrait orientation, iMovie will add black bars to the sides of the video. To avoid this, you could rotate the video on your iPhone to landscape before opening it in iMovie, and then rotate the exported video back to portrait orientation.

That’s how to slow down a video on the iPhone. You can find your slowed-down video in the Photos app. Next, find out what to do when videos are not playing on your iPhone.

Track Your Phone While You Send It In for Repair

Sending your iPhone through the mail can feel a bit risky, even if you’re sending it to Apple for repair. The latest version of iOS has a feature that allows you to track your iPhone and keep it secure even when sending it in for repair.

Why You’ll Love This Tip:

* Keep your iPhone secure when you need to send it in for repair to Apple.

* Avoid the risk of theft by being able to track your iPhone while it’s in the mail.

How to Enable Repair State in Find My

System Requirements

This tip works on iPhones running iOS 17.5 or later. Find out how to update to the latest version of iOS.

When getting your iPhone repaired, you not only need to erase all the content but also deactivate Find My iPhone and the Activation Lock, which leaves your device susceptible to theft—someone can easily set it up under their Apple ID without you knowing. The Repair State feature lets you keep Find My and Activation Lock on so that no one can take over your phone, and you can still track it during the repair. For more hidden iPhone tips and tricks, check out our free Tip of the Day newsletter. Now, here’s how to use Repair State to send in your iPhone for repair to Apple:

Warning

It is currently not possible for users to remove Repair State once it is activated, so do not do this unless you are sending your phone in for repair.

* Open the Find My app.

* Tap Devices, if it is not already selected.

* Select your iPhone.

* Select Remove This Device at the bottom.

* Select Continue when prompted to prepare it for repair.
